Alice Stumpf
MERIDEN — Alice (Vera) Stumpf, 85, of 320 Colony St., wife of Mortimer Driggs Stumpf, died Saturday evening, Nov. 28, 1998, at the Bradley Home in Meriden, after a brief illness.
Born in Meriden on Jan. 10, 1913, the daughter of the late Stanley and Catherine Modleski Karash, she had been a lifelong resident of Meriden. Mrs. Stumpf attended local schools and was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Meriden.
Besides her husband of 67 years, she is survived by a daughter, Nancy Ann Patnode of Terryville; two sons, Richard E. Stumpf of Meriden and George Stumpf of Wagner, S.D.; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Kirby of Meriden; and two nieces. She was predeceased by a son, William M. Stumpf, and a grandson, Sgt. Richard E. Stumpf Jr., USMC, both of Meriden
The funeral will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, with the Rev. Eric Henderson of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Meriden. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday morning prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Bradley Home, 320 Colony St., Meriden, CT 06451.
ANTHONY E. GWARA
PENSACOLA, Fla. — Anthony Edward Gwara, 56, died Sept. 5, 1998, in Pensacola as the result of an accident.
Born Aug. 23, 1942, in Meriden, Conn., he was a son of Rita Gwara and the late Anthony Stanley Gwara.
Besides his mother, he is survived by three brothers, William and Richard, both of Meriden, and James of Marblehead, Ga.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at St. Laurent Church, 121 Camp St., Meriden. Burial will be in St. Laurent Cemetery.
EILEEN MANTHAY
MERIDEN — Eileen Zimmerman Manthay, 72, of 20 Wilbur Ave., died Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998, at MidState Medical Center. She was the wife of Rudolf Emil Manthay.
She was born in Meriden Oct. 11, 1925, a daughter of the late Otto Max and Eda Marquardt Zimmerman Sr. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and was office secretary there for 25 years, retiring in 1990. She was also a member of St. John Ladies Aid Society and the Sunshine Committee and was a Sunday school teacher.
Besides her husband, she is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret Marie and Richard Luce, Judy Ann and Harold Kirchstein Jr. and Lynne Jane and Dennis Brault, all of Meriden; a brother, Elmer Zimmerman of Corina, Maine; a sister, Jane Konopka of Meriden; six grandchildren, Tracey Brault of Meriden, Tammi Brault of South Carolina, Wayne Kirchstein, Sara Kirchstein, William Luce and Nathan Luce, all of Meriden; and one great-grandchild, Chelsea Brault. She was predeceased by a brother, Otto Max Zimmerman Jr.
Funeral services will be announced. Relatives and friends may call at the Beecher & Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden, Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be at Gethsemane Cemetery.
ANTHONY MARINO
WALLINGFORD — Anthony Marino, 94, of 36 Putter Drive, died Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998, at MidState Medical Center, Meriden, after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Helen Pepe Marino.
Mr. Marino was born in New Haven on April 18, 1904, and was the son of the late Pietro and Fioretta SanVitale Marino. He was a resident of East Haven for many years, moving to Hamden for many years until moving to Wallingford five years ago. He was the original owner of Towne Jewelers of East Haven for 30 years until his retirement. He was a member of the Wallingford Country Club, a lifetime member of the New Haven Elks Lodge and a member of the Connecticut Retail Jewelers Association. He was a parishioner of the Church of the Resurrection.
He leaves daughters, Mrs. Joseph (Florence) Ferrara Jr. of Hamden and Mrs. Robert (Corinne) Chace Jr. of Wallingford. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by sisters Isabella Scungio, Anna Vece and Mae Amendola, and brothers John, Thomas and Joseph Marino.
His funeral procession will leave the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Ave., Friday morning at 9:30. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in the Church of the Resurrection at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery, West Haven. ROLAND L. PATRY
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Roland L. Patry, 63, of Cape Canaveral, died Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, after a long battle with cancer.
He was born in Meriden, Conn., July 13, 1935, son of the late Napoleon and Odinace (Provencher) Patry.
Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
EDWARD W. WEATHERS
MERIDEN — Edward W. Weathers, 53, of Gale Avenue, died Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, unexpectedly in his home.
He was born Nov. 3, 1944, in Meriden, a son of the late Kenneth N. Weathers Sr. and Helen (Astramowicz) Weathers. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.
He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Antoinette Weathers of Waterbury; a sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Joseph Chappo of Meriden; his beloved nieces and nephews, Heather Chappo of Boston, Mass., Joanne Chappo of New Britain, Allyson Chappo of Meriden, Edward Weathers of New Haven and Neil Weathers and his wife, Pamela, of Wallingford. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his name may be sent to the American Diabetes Assoc., 300 Research Parkway, Meriden, CT 06450, or to the Alzheimer's Assoc., South Central Conn. OLIVE DONALDSON
WEST HAVEN — Olive Boone Donaldson, 92, of 399 First Ave., died Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, at home after a short illness. She was the wife of the late LeRoy A. Donaldson.
She was born in Forest City, New Brunswick, Canada, July 18, 1906, a daughter of the late Harvey and Martha Van Tassell Boone.
She is survived by three sons, Richard L Donaldson of Hamden, Orie L. Donaldson of Shively, Ky. and Fred H. Donaldson Sr. of Wallingford; two daughters, Marion David and Laurene Fiorillo, both of West Haven; 21 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a great-grandson, James M. Burwell, and 12 brothers and sisters.
Private services were held Thursday. The Keenan Funeral Home, West Haven, was in charge of arrangements.
AQUILINO GONZALEZ
MERIDEN — Aquilino Gonzalez, 66, of South Meriden, husband of Iris (Colon) Gonzalez, died suddenly on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998, at MidState Medical Center.
Born in Rincon, Puerto Rico, on Sept. 26, 1932, he was the son of the late Francisco and Ricarda (Carrero) Gonzalez. He attended schools in Puerto Rico and the Bronx, N.Y., Community College. He had resided in Meriden for the past 36 years and was employed by American Cyanamid for 29 years, retiring in 1989. He was a veteran of the Korean conflict, having served with the U.S. Army. Mr. Gonzalez served as deacon for the Archdiocese of Hartford for 26 years, and recently was a deacon of St. Joseph Church in Meriden. Aquilino was a leader within the Hispanic community and was president and co-founder of the Latin American Club. He served as alderman-at-large in the city of Meriden for four years, and during that time was a director of the Meriden Housing Authority.
Besides his wife, Iris, he is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Ronald and Kelly Gonzalez of Durham, Jeff and Brenda Gonzalez, and Elmer Gonzalez, all of Meriden; two grandchildren, Andrew and Nathan Gonzalez; five sisters, Mersedes Sepulveda of Florida, Delia Sepulveda, Isabel Villarubia, Eva Sepulveda and Esther Nieves, all of Puerto Rico; five brothers, Ruben Gonzalez, Adrian Gonzalez, Pedro Sepulveda, Francisco Sepulveda and Gregorio Gonzalez of Puerto Rico; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Aquilino Gonzalez Jr., and by a brother, Pedro Sepulveda.
The funeral will be held on Monday at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., and at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Church. Place of burial with military honors will be announced. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Should friends desire, contributions in his memory may be made to the American Heart Association, 5 Brookside Drive, Wallingford, CT 06492, or to the American Diabetes Association, 300 Research Parkway, Meriden, CT 06450.
HARRIET HENN
CHESHIRE — Mrs. Harriet (Mosgrove) Henn, 88, of 152 S. Brooksvale Road, widow of Spencer L. Henn, died Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, at the Cheshire Convalescent Center.
Mrs. Henn was born in Waterbury, Feb. 21, 1910, daughter of the late William S. and Clara (Riggs) Mosgrove, and lived in Cheshire since 1940. She attended Post College and prior to her retirement was employed as a teller for several years by the Waterbury Savings Bank and Home Bank in Cheshire.
She was also employed by Sabin-Robbins Paper Co.
Mrs. Henn was a member of the First Congregational Church, the church choir, and the Cheshire Women's Bowling League.
She leaves two sons, Lawrence W. Henn of Cheshire and David M. Henn of Meriden; three daughters, Mrs. Louva Calhoun of Bethany, Elizabeth Curtis of Eugene, Ore., and Deborah Floyd of Killingworth and Florida; 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by four sisters.
Private graveside services will be held Friday, Oct. 9, 1998, in Hillside Cemetery
with the Rev. Wayne Sandau officiating.
There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church Memorial Fund, On the Green, Cheshire 06410.
The Alderson Funeral Home of Cheshire, 615 S. Main St., is in charge of arrangements.
