Vera Straub
WALLINGFORD — Vera M. Godo Straub, 91, of Wallingford, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, at Regency House of Wallingford. She was the wife of the late Frank C. Straub.
Mrs. Straub was born in Wallingford, June 30, 1907, a daughter of the late Steven and Mary Kish Godo, and was a lifelong resident here. She had been employed at International Silver Co. for many years, and later at Caplan's Market in Wallingford for several years. She was a parishioner of the Church of the Resurrection.
She is survived by her daughter, Jean A. Ridley of Meriden; her six grandchildren, Frank W. Ridley of Meriden, Cheryl A. Kennedy of Fall Village, Susan M. Ridley of Meriden, Edwin W. Ridley of Florida, James W. Ridley of Meriden, and Robert J. Brooks of Bristol; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary (Mrs. Clifford) Schumacher of Yalesville, and Betty (Mrs. Edward) Lee of Wallingford; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a great-granddaughter, a brother, John Godo, and a sister, Ann Matherson.
Her family will receive relatives and friends at the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street Ext., Wallingford, Wednesday from 8:30 until 9:30 a.m., when the funeral cortege will proceed to the Church of the Resurrection, 115 Pond Hill Road, Wallingford, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery.
Mary Tomcik
SOUTHINGTON — Mary Tomcik, 85, of Prospect Street in the Plantsville section of Southington, died Sunday, Nov. 22, 1998, at Hospice in Branford. She was the wife of Joseph Tomcik.
Born Jan. 1, 193, in Pittsburgh, daughter of the late Joseph and Louise (Bhczkowska) Walonski, Mary was a lifelong resident of Southington. She was a member of Holy Trinity Church and had worked for Nelson Screw until 1975.
Besides her husband, Joseph, she is survived by a daughter, Josephine Davis of Plantsville and a brother, Charles Walonski of Meriden; five grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 25, 1998, at 11 a.m. at Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home, 975 S. Main St., Plantsville. Burial will be in the Polish National Cemetery. Friends and family may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m.
Michele Lynn Bertine
WALLINGFORD — Michele Lynn Bertine, 21, of 230 Main St., died Nov. 23, 1998, at Connecticut Hospice, Branford, after a brief illness.
Miss Bertine was born in New Haven, Nov. 16, 1977, the daughter of Kenneth and Ann DelVecchio Bertine of Wallingford and had resided in Wallingford all of her life. She was a student of Stone Academy of Hamden and had been employed at the Masonic Geriatric Health Care Center, Wallingford, for the last five years, prior to her illness.
Besides her parents, she is survived by her fiancee, Michael Santillo of Wallingford; a brother, Shawn Bertine, also of Wallingford; and grandparents, Salvatore DelVecchio and Ellhart and Charles Rainer, all of Hamden.
Funeral services will be Friday at 10 a.m. in the Peter H. Torello & Son Funeral Home, 1022 Dixwell Ave., Hamden. Burial will be in Centerville Cemetery, Hamden. Friends may call Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Connecticut Hospice, 61 Burban Drive, Branford, CT 06405.
Levena Butler
WALLINGFORD — Levena Shipman Butler, 93, passed from the loving arms of her family into the arms of the God she worshipped and served during a lifetime of faith.
To her family and friends, she was the ideal of love and to her last moments she enveloped them all with the glow and warmth of her generous spirit.
Levena, a longtime resident of Stratford, died in Wallingford Sunday morning, Nov. 22, 1998. She would have been 94 on Thanksgiving Day. She moved from Stratford to Newport, N.H., in 1971 with her late husband, Edmund J. Butler Sr. They moved to Wallingford in 1980.
Mrs. Butler, daughter of Robert E. Lee and Effie Joslin Shipman, was born in Ithaca, N.Y., graduated from New Haven Normal School and enjoyed a long career of teaching in the Stratford school system. Her first teaching position was in the one-room Booth Hill school in Trumbull.
The Butlers were members of the Stratford Baptist Church and were active in state and national Baptist organizations. They devoted many years of service through Masonic activities. Mr. Butler was a past master of America Lodge #132 and a past district deputy while Mrs. Butler served in several official capacities as a member of Eastern Star and Amaranth. She was also a former state officer of the Church Women United.
Since moving to Wallingford, Mrs. Butler dedicated hundreds of hours in volunteer service to the Masonic Home and Hospital. Music was a cornerstone of her life, and through her singing she brought inspiration and joy to those with whom she worshipped.
She was an active soloist with the Masonic Home Choir and was rehearsing for the coming holiday season.
Mrs. Butler is survived by four children, Laurel Fey, Edmund Jr. and his wife, Christine, William Harritt and his wife, Susan, of Jericho, Vt., and Joslin Bolio and her husband, Frank, of Concord, N.H.; nine grandchildren, Mark Fey, Martin Fey, Nancy Fey-Yensan, Erik Fey, Susan Butler-Graham, Johanna Cornwell, Lisa Butler, Alanna Butler and Danielle Butler; and six great-grandchildren, Nathan, Samuel, Drew, Hannah, Maxfield and Sean.
A memorial service will be held Friday, Dec. 4, at 3 p.m. in the Masonic Home Chapel in Wallingford.
Burial will be private. The B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 S. Elm St., is in charge of the arrangements.

Henry P. Dufresne
MERIDEN — Henry P. Dufresne, 79, husband of the late Elizabeth Weiler Dufresne of Bee Street, Meriden, died Monday evening, Nov. 23, 1998, at the MidState Medical Center in Meriden after a brief illness.
Mr. Dufresne was born in Hardwick, Vt., on March 14, 1919, son of the late Esdras and Florida Bessette Dufresene.
He was a resident of the Meriden area for many years prior to living in Derby.
He worked for Textron-Lycoming in Stratford for 25 years until his retirement in 1987.
He is survived by one son, Donald P. Dufresne of Shelton; one daughter, Susan D. Moscardini of Meriden; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by five brothers and two sisters.
His funeral will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. from the Spinelli-Malerba Funeral Home, 62 Beaver St., Ansonia, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Derby. Burial will take place at Mount Saint Peter's Cemetery
in Derby.
Calling hours will be Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Irene M. Jankowski
MERIDEN — Irene M. Jankowski, of 435 Bradley Ave., died suddenly at home Saturday, Nov. 21, 1998.
Born in Meriden, she was a daughter of the late Adolph and Catherine Jankowski.
She resided most of her life in Meriden.
She is survived by a brother, Alphonse Jankowski, and a sister, Barbara Jankowski, both of Meriden.
There will be no calling hours. A memorial Mass will be held Jan. 6, 1999, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church.
Donations may be made in her memory to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101-0029; Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, Ashford, CT; or to St. Stanislaus Church Renovation Fund.
Jane R. Konopka
MERIDEN — Jane R. Konopka, 66, of 130 Plumb Ave., died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, at the Hospital for Special Care in New Britain.
She was the wife of Raymond Konopka Sr.
She was born in Meriden, May 29, 1932, a daughter of the late Otto and Eda Marquardt Zimmermann Sr.
She was a graduate of Meriden High School and was a member of St. John Lutheran Church.
She was also an active member of REPTR Motor Sports Club.
Besides her husband, she is survived by five sons and two daughters-in-law, Raymond and Carol Konopka Jr. of Meriden, Edward and Kelly Konopka of Durham, Paul Konopka of Durham, Thomas Konopka of Meriden and Richard Konopka of Meriden; five grandchildren, Kevin Konopka, Kelley Konopka, Kyle Konopka, Tyler Konopka and Riley Konopka, all of Meriden; and a brother, Elmer Zimmermann of Corina, Maine. She was predeceased by a sister, Eileen Manthay and a brother, Otto Zimmermann Jr.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, at the Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden.
The Rev. Carl A. Krueger will officiate.
Burial, in Gethsemane Cemetery, will be at the convenience of the family.

Rita Pierce
SPRING HILL, Fla. — Rita Carrington Pierce, 73, formerly of Wallingford and Meriden, died Nov. 23, 1998 at Brightside Hospice in Clearwater, Fla., after a lengthy illness. She was the wife of the late Lawrence E. Pierce.
Mrs. Pierce was born in Meriden, Aug. 5, 1925.
She was the daughter of the late James and Mildred Carrington.
A graduate of the Meriden Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1946, she worked as a registered nurse at Meriden Hospital until her retirement.
She is survived by one daughter, Deb Campbell of Clearwater, Fla.; and four sons, Thomas and his wife, Sheila, of Torrington, Daniel and his wife, Gerry, of Meriden, James of Watertown and Timothy of Wallingford; 13 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
She also leaves behind one brother, James and his wife, Betty Carrington of Meriden; and several nieces and nephews and dear friends.
Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.
Her family will receive relatives and friends at the home of Daniel Pierce, 22 Glenview Road, Meriden, Conn., on Friday, Nov. 27, from 4 to 8 p.m.
