Leo F. Leary
STRATFORD — Leo F. Leary, 76, of Agawam Drive, Stratford, died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, at St. Joseph's Manor, Trumbull, after a long illness. He was the husband of Eileen Riley Leary.
Mr. Leary was born in North Attleboro, Mass., on April 17, 1922, and was the son of the late Daniel L. and Mary M. Rose Leary. He was a resident of North Haven for 21 years and Stratford for the past two years. He was formerly an executive vice president of Insilco Corporation of Meriden and later had worked in management for Irwin Magnetic for five years until his retirement. He was a member of the Connecticut Conference and had served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Besides his wife, he leaves sons, Michael J. Leary of Hamden, Daniel L. Leary of Huntington, James L. Leary of Bristol and Patrick Leary of Branford; daughters, Kathleen M. Finley of Bedford Hills, N.Y., Jane E. Henderson of Hamden, Judith A. Harkins of Vienna, Virginia and Susan E. Nelson of Alamo, Calif. He was the brother of Marion McGuire of Merritt Island, Fla. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, John F. Leary.
His funeral procession will leave the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Ave., North Haven, Monday morning at 10:30. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Hamden, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hamden. The visiting hours will be Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. .In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Legionnaires of Christ, 475 Oak Ave., Cheshire, 06410, or the Alzheimer's Association, 2911 Dixwell Ave., Hamden, CT 06518.
Hope M. Ritchie
SOUTHINGTON — Hope M. Ritchie, 85, of 45 Meriden Ave., wife of the late Raymond Ritchie, left this life on Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, surrounded by her loving family at the Southington Care Center after a lengthy illness.
Born in Hodgdon, Maine, on Sept. 22, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Ora and Margerie (Stockford) Alward. Mrs. Ritchie was educated in Hodgdon, Maine, and was a resident of Meriden for 40 years before moving to Southington seven years ago. She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Meriden.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and Gene Briggs of Houlton, Maine, Cheryl and John Burkhardt of Meriden; a son and daughter-in-law, Elaine and Gene Briggs of Houlton, Maine, Cheryl and John Burkhardt of Meriden; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Beth Ritchie of Southington; eight grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Ritchie was predeceased by a son, Roger Ritchie, and by 12 sisters and brothers.
The funeral will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, and at 2:30 p.m. in the First Assembly of God Church, 601 Paddock Ave., Meriden, with the Rev. Thomas A. Fegler officiating. Burial will be in the spring at Evergreen Cemetery, Houlton, Maine. Friends may call at the funeral home prior to the service from 1 to 2 p.m.
Theresa C. DeMarco
MERIDEN — Theresa C. Nati DeMarco, 68, of 64 Allen Ave., wife of the late Frank J. DeMarco, died Thursday morning, Dec. 17, 1998, in the Westfield Care and Rehab Center, after a brief illness.
She was born in Meriden, Jan. 10, 1930, a daughter of the late Frank T. and Catherine M. Giacco Nati. She was a lifelong resident. She retired from the Napier Co. in 1993 after 18 years of employment. She had also been employed by the Jonal Laboratories Inc. for several years. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Katherine M. DeMarco Warlikowski and John Warlikowski Sr. of Meriden; seven grandchildren, Christina Warlikowski, John Warlikowksi Sr., Meghan Silvernale, Brian Silvernale, Keith Silvernale, Nichole Warlikowski and Kaitlyn Warlikowski; three sisters, Mary Kawecki, Josephine Zukowski and Francine Maurizio; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, Fortunato Nati, Salvatore Nati and John Nati Sr. Mrs. DeMarco's family will soon be joined by twin great-grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather Saturday morning, Dec. 19, 1998, in the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 226 W. Main St., at 10:15 a.m. for procession to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church for her 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial. She will be buried with her husband in Sacred Heart Cemetery. There will be calling hours in the funeral home today from 4 to 8 p.m.
William Lasbury
SOUTHINGTON — William Lasbury, 79, of Academy Lane in Southington, died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, at MidState Medical Center in Meriden. He was the husband of the late Dorothy Asquith Lasbury.
Born Feb. 9, 1919, in Springfield, Mass., the son of the late Carl and Louise (Gerdes) Lasbury, he had been a Southington resident since 1953. William retired from Newcomb Spring in 1982.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Joanne Lasbury of Southington; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Maurice DeLuco of Southington; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Friends and family may call at the Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home, 975 S. Main St., Plantsville, on Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. A private funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998. Burial will be in South End Cemetery

Jean M. Baker
SOUTHINGTON – Mrs. Jean M. Ashcroft Baker, 70, of 19 Riverside Drive, formerly of West Woods Road, Hamden, died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, in the Bradley Memorial Hospital, Southington, after a lengthy illness. She was the wife of the John J. Baker.
Born in New Haven, Nov. 20, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Earl Russell and Violet J. Harnish Ashcroft and was a resident of Hamden for 42 years, moving to Southington 14 years ago. Before her retirement in 1980, she was a clerk in the Customer Service Department at Nationwide Insurance Co. of Hamden for 15 years. She was a member of St. Peter's on the Hill Episcopal Church, now the Grace and St. Peter's Episcopal Church of Hamden, and was a former secretary of the Ladies Guild and member of its Altar Guild and was a member of the Jensen's Activity Club of Southington.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Deborah Elaine Baker of Middletown; a son, John R. Baker and his wife, Roberta J. Baker of Cheshire; a brother, Russell Ashcroft of Cheshire; and two grandsons, Matthew and Adam Kowalski, both of Middletown.
Her funeral will be held Saturday at 10:15 a.m. from the Hamden Memorial Funeral Home, 1300 Dixwell Ave., followed by services in the Grace & St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Hamden. Burial will take place in Centerville Cemetery, Hamden. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 4 to 8 p.m.
Henry F. Bassoli Sr.
HAMDEN – Mr. Henry "Hank" F. Bassoli Sr., 82, of 146 Chester St., died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, in Connecticut Hospice, Inc., Branford, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the husband of Helen Tyska Bassoli for 52 years.
Born in Ansonia, Jan. 24, 1916, he was the son of the late Evo and Olga Montovani Bassoli and was a resident of Hamden for the past 42 years. Mr. Bassoli worked for the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. of New Haven for 19 years and then was employed as a custodian for 21 years at Hamden High School, retiring in 1985. He also worked part-time at the Bally's Health Fitness as a Sports Therapist Masseur for 22 years, retiring in 1993. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and was commissioned on the U.S.S. Baltimore, serving active duty at Pearl Harbor when it was bombed. He later received the Purple Heart. He was an assistant baseball coach with the Hamden Father's Little League Baseball Association.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Henry "Bud" F. Bassoli Jr., and his wife, Beverly Bassoli, both of Wallingford; a daughter, Barbara B. Bildstein, and her husband, George M. Bildstein, both of North Haven; and three grandchildren, Stephen L. and Kyle L. Bassoli and Cherilyn M. Bildstein.
Friends and relatives are to go directly to the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, Hamden, Friday at 9:30 a.m. for a Mass of Christian burial. Burial will be private in All Saint's Cemetery, North Haven. Memorial contributions may be made to the Father McGivney Cancer Center, 1450 Chapel St., New Haven, 06511, or to Connecticut Hospice, Inc., 61 Burban Drive, Branford, CT 06405. Cecelia Bruzy
NORTHFORD — Cecelia Bruzy, 74, of Woods Hill Road, wife of the late Alexander Bruzy, died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, at Connecticut Hospice, Branford.
A daughter of the late Andrew and Antoinette Janeczek, she was born in South James Port, Long Island, Feb. 25, 1924. She was a long time resident of Northford, where she and her late husband owned and operated the Northford Liquor Store.
She is survived by four sons, Philip Bruzy of Wallingford, Michael and John Bruzy, both of Northford and William Bruzy of Madison; four grandchildren, Melissa, Amber, Robert and Philip Bruzy Jr.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters and three brothers.
A committal service will be held Friday, Dec. 18, at 10 a.m. in the Monsignor John L. Ceppa Chapel in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Meriden. Burial will follow in the Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Gifts in her memory may be sent to the Connecticut Hospice, 61 Burban Drive, Branford CT 06405. The Stempien Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden, is in charge of arrangements.
Otto W. Donath
WALLINGFORD — Otto W. Donath, 81, of 55 Masonic Ave., died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, at the West Haven Veterans Affairs Medical Center, after a brief illness. He was the husband of Evelyn M. Clark Donath.
Mr. Donath, a son of the late William and Anna Buchta Donath, was born in North Haven on May 23, 1917. He was a resident of Hamden for most of his life before moving to Wallingford in 1994. He was a toolmaker with Herrick & Cowell of Hamden for 11 years at the time of his retirement. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in World War II on the Yorktown "Fighting Lady" Aircraft Carrier. He was a member of the Mount Carmel Congregational Church in Hamden, a member and Past Master of the Wooster Lodge #79, A.F. & A.M., a member of the Mystic Chapter #76, O.E.S., and in his 15th year as Worthy Patron, a member and Past Worthy Patron of the Alice Chapter #76 in Hamden, a member of the White Shrine, the Scottish Rite Valley of New Haven, the Lafayette Consistory of Stratford, the National Camping Travelers (NCT), the Rainbow Girls Evergreen Assembly, where he served on the board, and a volunteer at the Masonic Health Care Center in the Train Room.
Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Evelyn I. Montano; a son-in-law, James Montano; a sister, Florence Bryant of Crestview, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a devoted daughter-in-law, Ruth Nagy; several devoted nieces and nephews, many friends and relatives. He was predeceased by a sister, Carolyn Frost.
The funeral service will be held at Beecher & Bennett, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden, on Friday, Dec. 18, at 11 a.m. Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. There will be a service by Mystic Chapter #20 O.E.S. at 7 p.m. and a Masonic Service by Wooster Lodge #79 A.F. & A.M. at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Centerville Cemetery, Hamden. Lillian B. Harnois
MERIDEN – Lillian B. Harnois, 75, of 1012 Old Colony Road, wife of the late Raymond Harnois, died Tuesday night, Dec. 15, 1998, in Coccomo Memorial after a long illness.
She was born in Meriden, July 28, 1923, a daughter of the late Henry and Lena Gunther Beierle. She was a lifelong resident. She retired from Meriden Glass Co. after several years of employment.
She is survived by a sister, Anna B. Santin of Meriden; a sister-in-law, Stella Beierle of New Hampshire; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by an infant son, Robert Watson; two sisters, Florence Aresco and Mae Borek; and two brothers, Emil and Ernest Beierle; also two twin nieces, Lorraine Beierle and Marilyn Crossley.
Her funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. Robert Prescott-Ezickson in the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 226 W. Main St., on Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998, at 9:30 a.m. She will be buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours in the funeral home, Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, from 4 to 6 p.m.
John Kraemer
MADISON — John R. Kraemer, 64, of 15 Surf Club Road, formerly of Meriden, died Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, at Connecticut Hospice, Branford. He was the husband of Diana (Ragone) Kraemer.
He was born in Meriden, Aug. 26, 1934, son of the late Francis Wickham and Anna (Hogan) Kraemer. He was an attorney and until his retirement a year ago, he was a general counsel of G & K Industries in Clover City, Calif. for the past 13 years. Formerly of Meriden, he was active in politics in Meriden and for 20 years he practiced law in Meriden and Wallingford.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, John R. Kraemer Jr. of Ridgewood, N.J.; two daughters, Anne Mary (Mrs. Kevin) Russell of Madison and Katherine (Mrs. Sean) Bell of New Canaan; a brother, Francis W. Kraemer of Washington , DC; three sisters, Jane Dubuc of Meriden, Mary Louise Hamilton of Edgewater, Md. and Nancy Wertz of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and 18 nieces and nephews.
The funeral procession will leave the Swan Funeral Home, 825 Boston Post Road, Madison, Friday at 11:30 a.m. followed by a funeral liturgy at noon at St. Margaret Church, Madison. Edward F. Lewis
WALLINGFORD — Edward F. Lewis, 87, of Ward St., died Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, at the Skyview Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was the beloved husband of Mary Vitali Lewis.
Born in Wallingford, July 18, 1911, he was a son of the late John and Catherine McGovern Lewis and was a lifelong resident. Mr. Lewis attended Most Holy Trinity School and Lyman Hall High School and was employed by the former International Silver Company for many years until his retirement. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus No. 5 of Wallingford and Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree, John Barry Assembly of New Haven and was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church in Wallingford.
Besides his wife, Mary, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Peter J. and Jane Lewis of Warwick, R.I.; three grandsons, Ryan C. Lewis, Matthew M. Lewis and Michael P. Lewis; a sister, Ann (Mrs. Al) Buccy of Wallingford; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three sisters, Katherine Sittnick, Edna Lewis, and Barbara Godo; and a brother, John J. Lewis.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 12:15 p.m. from the Wallingford Funeral Home, when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery
in Wallingford. Gifts in his memory may be sent to Most Holy Trinity School, 11 No. Whittlesey Ave., Wallingford, CT 06492.
