Agnes J. Sivertsen
MERIDEN — Agnes Johanne (Hansen) Sivertsen, 93, formerly of Southington, died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, at the Bradley Home in Meriden, where she resided. She was the widow of John A. Sivertsen.
She was born Sept. 27, 1905, in Hartford, daughter of the late Niels P. and Birgitte (Nielsen) Hansen. She graduated from Hartford Public High School and had worked for Travelers Insurance Co. She then married John Sivertsen and moved to Denmark to live for 22 years. She returned to Southington in 1952 with her family and worked for Jensen Mobile Home Inc. for several years. She and her husband owned and operated the Tott Laundry in Plainville and Meriden for many years. Mrs. Silvertsen was a member of the Danish Sisterhood of America.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ole B. and Mary P. Sivertsen of Yalesville; a daughter, Bente R. Sivertsen and best friend, Philip L. Tanguay of Farmington; a son-in-law, Kenneth Bates of Southington; two sisters, Inger Jensen of Southington and Harriet Hansen of Hartford;; six grandchildren, Kenneth Bates and his wife, Debra, Karen Kollar and her husband, John, Kimberly Renehan and her husband, Tom, Kris Bates and his wife, Cheryl, Eric Sivertsen and Jill Sivertsen; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Bettie E. Bates.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Bradley Home in Meriden. Burial will be private at Oak Hill Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Bradley Home, P.O. Box 886, Meriden, CT 06451. DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington, is in charge of arrangements.
Ruth T. Meyer
WALLINGFORD — Ruth T. Meyer, 80, of 5 McGuire Court, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, at MidState Medical Center in Meriden, after a sudden illness.
Born in New Haven, on Jan. 18, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Elizabeth Bronson Downes. She attended schools in Orange and lived in Meriden before moving to Wallingford three years ago. Mrs. Meyer had been employed by Meriden-Wallingford Hospital, then by Connecticut Baptist Home before retiring two years ago. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wallingford.
Mrs. Meyer is survived by two daughters, Linda Fretz of Wallingford and Michelle Winarski of Higganum; two sons, George Thomas "Tom" Meyer of Durham and James Meyer of South Meriden; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one niece; and three nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Joanne Biafore.
The funeral will be held on Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at 10 a.m. at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, with the Rev. William A. Huegel officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery
in West Haven at 1 p.m. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m.
Joseph Otfinoski
MIDDLEFIELD — Joseph Otfinoski, 82, of School St., husband of the late Katherine (Kokoszka) Otfinoski, died Thursday evening at the Wadsworth Glen Health & Care Center.
He was born in Middletown, son of the late Florian and Katherine (Pehota) Otfinoski, and had been employed at the Miller Co. in Meriden, prior to his retirement.
He is survived by a daughter amd son-in-law, Lorraine and Charles Etheridge of Durham; two sisters, Josephine Beherns of Durham, and Frances Farmer of Eugene, Ore.; two grandchildren and their spouses, Mark and Lynn Etheridge and Michele and Stephen Snipes; four great-grandchildren, Joshua Etheridge, Jason Snipes, Frankie Snipes and Megan Etheridge; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Joseph F. Otfinoski Jr.; a brother, William Otfinoski; and a sister, Stacia Pienarcik.
The funeral will be held Monday at 9 a.m. at the Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown. Burial will be in the Middlefield Cemetery, Middlefield. Friends may call at the Biega Funeral Home, Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m.
Wanda H. Skladzien
STOUGHTON, Mass. — Wanda Harriet Skladzien, 86, formerly of Meriden and Madison, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, at St. Joseph's Manor in Brockton, Mass. She was the wife of the late Dr. Stephen A. Skladzien.
Born Sept. 27, 1912, in Meriden, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Jadwiga (Swiantek) Lenik. She attended St. Stanislaus School and Meriden High School and graduated from the Meriden School of Nursing as a registered nurse in 1933. She also attended the Children's School of Nursing in Boston, Mass. and was employed as a nurse at the Meriden Hospital. Mrs. Skladzien was a longtime parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church, a founding member and first president of its Ladies Guild. She was a Life Member of the Girl Scouts of America, a longtime participant in the Girl Scout Council of Meriden and a member of the Meriden Library Board.
Mrs. Skladzien is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Claudia and Thomas Recupero of Stoughton, Mass., Celeste and Paul Missett of Gladwyne, Pa., and MaryLou and Andrew Meade of North Falmouth, Mass.; a brother, Edward Lenik of the Plantsville section of Southington; a sister, Jeannette White of Holliston, Mass.; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Irene E. Staszewski.
The funeral will be Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at 9 a.m. from the Stempien Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home beginning at 8 a.m. Monday. Dorothea Schmelzer
NEWTOWN, Pa. — Dorothea Nissen Schmelzer, 89, died Nov. 21, 1998, at Pennswood Village in Newtown.
Born in Meriden, she was the daughter of Victor W. and Katherine N. Schmelzer. She was a graduate of Wellesley College and an exchange scholar at the University of Munich in the 1930s. She taught German at Meriden High School, the University of Colorado, Tulane University, the College of Wooster, Hiram College and became an editor of the Duke University Press before returning to Rosemary Hall, Wallingford, and Greenwich Academy, Greenwich. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. During her 18 years at Pennswood, she was a volunteer at Newton Friends School.
She is survived by a niece, Gretchen Schmelzer Reeves of Lumberton, N.C.; and a nephew, William D. Schmelzer of San Antonio, Texas . She was predeceased by a brother, Bill Schmelzer.
A memorial service was held at Pennswood Village Dec. 8, 1998. Contributions in her memory may be made to Newtown Friends School or a charity of your choice.
Mildred M. Bellafronto
WALLINGFORD — Mildred M. Bellafronto, 91, formerly of Williams Place, Wallingford, died Monday, Dec. 21, 1998, at Regency House of Wallingford.
Miss Bellafronto was born in Wallingford, Nov. 22, 1907, a daughter of the late Augustine G. and Amelia Burlando Bellafronto and was a lifelong resident here. She was salutatorian of the class of 1926 at Lyman Hall High School. She had been assistant manager of the former Jefferson Federal Bank on South Main Street, and had previously been secretary of the former Lanouette and Griffin Insurance Agency in Wallingford. She was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church, and was a member of the Meriden Council of Catholic Women.
She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Malcolm J. and Judy Bellafronto of Citrus Springs, Fla., and two nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Mary "Dolly" Bellafronto and Marguerite L. Bellafronto, and a brother, Gordon J. Bellafronto.
Visitation at the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street Ext., Wallingford, will be Thursday from 8:15 a.m. until 8:45 a.m., when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:15 a.m. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery. Gifts in her memory may be sent to the Visiting Nurse Association of Wallingford, 135 North Plains Industrial Road, Wallingford, CT 06492.
Lorraine V. Hoffman
WALLINGFORD — Lorraine V. Hoffman, 73, of 84 S. Branford Road, formerly of 11 Circle Drive, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998, at 57 Wharton Brook Drive. She was the wife of the late Warren W. Hoffman.
She was born in Charlottesville, Va., Sept. 29, 1925, a daughter of the late John and Bertha Moneymaker.
She was a self-employed private duty nurse and had been a Wallingford resident for over 38 years and was a member of the Wallingford Grange No. 33 and was an active part of Ecclesiastes Ministries in Wallingford.
She was predeceased by a brother, John Raymond Moneymaker.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in the chapel of the B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 S. Elm St., Wallingford. Burial will be at In Memoriam Cemetery, Wallingford.
Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m.
Dr. Eleanor L. Michel
MERIDEN — Dr. Eleanor Louise Michel, 89, of 360 Broad St., died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998, at Miller Memorial Community.
She was born in New York, July 6, 1909, the daughter of the late John Adam and Amelia Steitz Michel. She graduated from Meriden High School in 1925 as valedictorian of her class and from Connecticut College of New London in 1929 with a bachelor of arts summa cum laude degree. She went on to study at Middleburg College from which she graduated in 1933 with a masters degree. In 1943 she was awarded a Ph.D. with distinction from Universete’ Laval in Quebec. She also did graduate study at Universete’ de Rennes, France; La Sorbonne, Paris; Temple University; Yale University; Penn State College and Central Connecticut Teachers’ College. Her career covered 41 years of teaching: first at Plainville High School from 1929-1930; Meriden High School from 1930 to 1957; Weaver High School (Hartford) from 1957 to 1965 and Kingswood Oxford School from 1965 to 1970.
She is survived by several cousins and by very good friends, Marian and Von Phung Phan of Middletown.
The funeral will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 164 Hanover St., Meriden. The Rev. Perry L. Beaver will officiate. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden.
Joel F. Moore
WALLINGFORD — Joel F. Moore, 54, of 8 Valley St., died Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, at MidState Medical Center.
He is survived by his former wife, Gail Pantenela and one son, Joel S. Moore, both of Wallingford.
Funeral services and burial were private. Arrangements are being handled by Szymaszek-Taylor Funeral Home, 189 E. Main St., Meriden.
John A. Raye
MERIDEN — John Anthony "Tony" Raye, 36, of Meriden, lifelong companion of Dorothy Johnson, died Dec. 21, 1998, at Hartford Hospital. Tony was born May 9, 1962, in Meriden. He was the son of Mable and Curtis Harkless. He was educated in the Meriden school system. He worked in various locations doing handyman work.
He is survived by one son, John Anthony; two daughters, Shemeika and Toneisha Johnson-Raye, all of Meriden; five sisters, Ada Garcia of Wolcott, Verdia Mitchell of Meriden, Barbara Raye of Florida, Debra White and Cynthia Badillo of Meriden; six brothers, Michael Raye of Las Vegas, Jody Raye, Curtis Harkless Jr., Gregory Harkless, Clarence Harkless and Jerome Harkless, all of Meriden; several nieces and nephews; many cousins and a host of friends.
The funeral will be held on Thursday, Dec. 24, at 2 p.m. Calling hours are one hour prior to the funeral. Burial will be private. Szymaszek-Taylor Funeral Home, 189 E. Main St., Meriden, is in charge of arrangements.
Ann (Palmieri) Angelillo
SOUTHINGTON — Anna (Palmieri) Angelillo, 80, of 20 Coolidge St., died Monday, Dec. 21, 1998, at home. She was the wife of the late John B. Angelillo Jr.
Born in Southington on Nov. 24, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Rose (Gagliardi) Palmieri. She was a co-owner of A&J Catering with her husband John prior to her retirement. Mrs. Angelillo was a communicant of St. Thomas Church. She was a member of St. Rita’s Circle, St. Thomas Ladies Guild and the Altar Society. She was the orginator of the bingo program for St. Thomas School.
She is survived by a son, John B. Angelillo, and a daughter, Rosanne A. Sherburne, both of Southington; two brothers and daughter-in-laws, Arthur Palmieri and his wife Sue of North Haven, and Anthony Palmieri and his wife Florence of Southington; a sister, Philomena Picone of West Haven; two sisters-in-law, Agnes Palmieri of Southington and Edvige Palmieri of Florida; two grandchildren, Richard and Dennis Sherburne; a good friend, Alan R. Nadolny of Southington; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by five brothers, Peter, Joseph, Albert, Angelo and Emil Palmieri and a sister, Josephine Rezuta.
The funeral will be held on Thursday at 8:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St. to St. Thomas Church at 9 a.m. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m.
