Eva Pawlak
MERIDEN — Eva Warrington Pawlak, 96, of Meriden, died Dec. 2, 1998. She was the widow of Leonard J. Pawlak.
She had lived in Meriden for the past 60 years. She was a volunteer in the second class of nurses aides taught by the Red Cross during World War II. She later became an L.P.N. and worked for many years at Meriden-Wallingford Hospital, retiring in 1976.
She is survived by two daughters, Betty Rice of Clinton and Lois Scofield of Stamford; 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Harry W. Schafer III
CHESHIRE — Harry W. Schafer III, 57, of 1420 Cheshire St., husband of Karen L. (Schrader) Schafer, died Friday at the MidState Medical Center in Meriden.
Mr. Schafer was born June 23, 1941, in Weehawken, N.J., a son of the late Harry W. and Ethel (Muniz) Schafer, and lived in Cheshire for the last 20 years.
Mr. Schafer was a graduate of Hawthorn High School in Hawthorn, N.J., and attended Seton Hall University. He was employed as a service manager of computer room support systems at Facilities Equipment Corp. in Meriden and at the Liebert Corp. in Wallingford. Mr. Schafer was a strong supporter of the Cheshire High School swim team. He was a member of the Farms Country Club in Wallingford. He was a communicant of St. Bridget's Church. Mr. Schafer was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served as a hospital corpsman during the Cuban blockade.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Keith H. Schafer; a daughter-in-law, Melissa C. (Allen) Schafer, both of Durham; and two daughters, Carolyn J. and Kathryn L. Schafer, both of Cheshire; two sisters, Elaine Stohler of Gilbert, Ariz. and Mrs. Denise Ruel and her husband, Robert, of Bloomsbury, N.J.; and a granddaughter, Laura Ann Schafer.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, Dec. 12, at noon at St. Bridget's Church in Cheshire. Burial will be at the convenience of his family in Valhalla Cemetery
in Staten Island, N.Y. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cheshire Volunteer Fire Department, 250 Maple Ave., Cheshire.. The Slater Funeral Home, 242 S. Main St., Cheshire, is in charge of arrangements.
Stanley J. Staniewicz Sr.
SOUTHINGTON — Stanley John Staniewicz Sr., 89, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998, at Southington Care Center. He was the husband of the late Mary Kowalski Staniewicz.
Stanley was a graduate of Yale University, class of 1934, and retired as electrical engineering manager at the former Allied Control-Gould Inc. in Plantsville, where he worked for 26 years specializing in the design of electromechanical relays and switches. He also taught introductory electrical circuitry in the evening. After retirement in 1974, Stan taught engineering drafting at Waterbury State Tech for several years.
Stan was born in Barren Island, Brooklyn, N.Y., on Dec. 3, 1909, oldest child of Bronislaw and Frances (Dziadul) Staniewicz. He was predeceased by his parents, a sister, Jennie Bozelko of New Haven, and brothers Joseph of Hamden and Benjamin of West Haven. Stan graduated from New Haven High School in 1929 and New Haven Collegiate Preparatory School in 1930. His first engineering job was with Sargent Lock in New Haven and later, during World War II, he worked as a civilian electrical engineer for the Navy in the Norwalk area. In the late 1930's, Stan met Mary Kowalski of Meriden and they were married June 15, 1940. They lived in Norwalk for eight years and moved to Milldale in 1948, which was their home for the past 50 years. Stan was the primary caregiver to Mary for more than five years before her death in 1997. Stan was active in many civic organizations of Southington: the Lions Club, Knights of Columbus and onetime chairman of the manufacturing division of the Chamber of Commerce. In 1963, he chaired a drive to rally financial support so that two Southington High School teachers could attend the National Science Fair in New Mexico. Even in retirement he took on challenging volunteer work, serving as the coordinator for senior citizen tax preparation at the Southington Calendar House from the 1980s through the early 1990s and treasurer of the Bristol Ostomy Club.
He leaves two sons, Stanley J. Staniewicz Jr. and his daughter-in-law, Sandra, of Southington and Dr. Robert J. Staniewicz of Hunt Valley, Md.; grandchildren, Michael Staniewicz and Cathy Rivera; two great-grandchildren, Brianna and Savanna; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, at 9 a.m. at the Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home, 975 S. Main St., Plantsville, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at Mary Our Queen Church. Burial will follow in St. Thomas Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m.
Agnes B. Clark
HIGGANUM — Agnes (Bagley) Clark, 92, of Beaver Meadow Road, wife of the late Russell Clark, died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998 at High View Health Care Center.
She was born in Great Neck, N.Y., a daughter of the late James and Susan (Grezier) Bagley. Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a registered nurse at Veterans Memorial Hospital.
She leaves a daughter, Dorothy S. Silverstrean of Wallingford; two daughters-in-law, Agnes Clark of Higganum and Carolyn Ross of Fayetteville, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two sons, Russell C. and James B. Clark.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown with the Rev. Edward Goetz officiating. Burial will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in All Saints Episcopal Cemetery, Great Neck, N.Y. Brian M. Dinan
WALLINGFORD — Brian M. Dinan, 44, of Powers Road, Wallingford, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998 at the Connecticut Hospice, Branford, after a long illness. He was the loving husband of Mary Rose Dinan.
Mr. Dinan was born Feb. 5, 1954, in New Haven, and was the son of the late John J. Dinan Sr. and Maxine I. Neumann Dinan. A resident of Wallingford since 1979, he had worked as a machinist for the Furon-CHR Industries of New Haven for the past 20 years. In 1974, he was the New Haven County Bowling Association "Scratch" champion. In 1976, he won the Connecticut State Men's Bowling Association "All Events" championship. He was a parishioner of the Church of the Resurrection.
He was the loving father of Laura and Sarah Dinan of Wallingford. He is also survived by two devoted brothers, Kevin Dinan of Hamden and Robert Dinan of Florida; a brother, John J. Dinan Jr. of Hamden; dear friends, Robert and Karen Mako, Charles and Helen Gerace of Wallingford; and nieces and nephews.
His funeral procession will leave the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Ave., at 10:45 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, for a Mass of Christian burial at 11:30 a.m. at the Church of the Resurrection. Interment will follow in St. John's Cemetery. The visiting hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Frances B. Harwood
SOUTHINGTON — Frances (Bassett) Harwood, 76, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998. She was the widow of William R. Harwood.
Born in New Britain on May 31, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Philip G. and Florence (Yeomans) Bassett. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Southington. She was the past president of the Southington Women's Club and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Southington Community Theatre.
She is survived by a son, Col. David B. Harwood of Alabama.; a daughter-in-law, Carol L. Harwood of Florida; and four grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Col. William R. Harwood Jr.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church of Southington. Edward S. Maccio Sr.
SOUTHINGTON — Edward S. Maccio Sr., 57, of 36 Belleview Avenue, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998 at Hartford Hospital.
Born Dec. 23, 1940 in New Britain, son of the late Dominic and Maria (D'Onofrio) Maccio, Ed was a lifelong resident of Southington. He was a 1958 graduate of Southington High School and attended the Police Academy. He was a member of the Connecticut National Guard. Mr. Maccio was a police officer with the Southington Police from 1964 to 1967. He was a firefighter at Southington Fire Department headquarters from 1967 to 1983, when he retired. Mr. Maccio formerly owned and operated Ed's Country Kitchen in Plantsville. He was a heart transplant recipient in 1995. He was a former member of the Moose Club and the Sons of Italy.
He was the devoted and loving father of Edward S. Maccio Jr. and daughter-in-law, Olga, of Plainville, Marialee Maccio and Dominic J. Maccio, both of Southington. He also leaves four brothers, Raymond, John Sr. and Joseph Maccio of Southington and Dominic "Anthony" Maccio of Plantsville; a sister, Philomena Feola of Southington; a brother-in-law, Walter Orzech; and granddaughter, Angelina Maccio.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 8:15 a.m. from the Della Vecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington to St. Thomas Church. Burial will be at St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Friday from 4 to 8 p.m.
Walter Machnicz
BEACON FALLS — Walter Machnicz, 81, of 29 Noe Place, husband of the late Anne (Oldakowski) Machnicz, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998 at the Crescent Manor in Waterbury after a brief illness.
Mr. Machnicz was born Aug. 20, 1917 in Ansonia, a son of the late Andrew and Anna (Hudak) Machnicz. He had been a resident of Beacon Falls for the past 53 years and was a retired employee of the Anaconda American Brass, where he had worked for 40 years. He was a member of the Beacons Falls Senior Citizens and Lemko Association of Ansonia. He played basketball with the Pontiac Chiefs of Ansonia. He also had been a member of the Civil Conservation Corp. Mr. Machnicz was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He served with the 809th Aviation Battalion in the European Theater and also the 1901st Engineer Aviation Battalion in the Pacific Theater.
He is survived by three sons, Walter R. and John J. Machnicz, both of Beacon Falls and William P. Machnicz of South Meriden; two brothers, Dimitro Machnicz and Russell Machnicz, both of Seymour, a sister, Helen Casner of Ansonia; a daughter-in-law, Judith Machnicz of South Meriden; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held on Saturday at 10:15 a.m. from the Fitzgerald-Zembruski-Mengacci Funeral Home, 240 North Main St., Naugatuck. to St. Michaels Church, Beacon Falls at 11 a.m. Burial, with full military honors, will be in St. James Cemetery, Naugatuck. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.
Richard J. Scanlon
MELBOURNE, Fla. — The Scanlon and Dempster families are sad to announce the death of Richard J. Scanlon on Dec. 9, 1998.
He was a former resident of Wallingford and Guilford and more recently resided in Melbourne.
He is survived by Caroline Scanlon; a son, Edward Scanlon; two daughters, Kathleen Dempster and son-in-law, David Dempster and Joyce Scanlon; and three grandchildren, David Dempster, Kelly Dempster and Kelsi Londa. He is predeceased by a son, Richard C. Scanlon.
Family and friends may visit the family Friday, Dec. 11 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Dempster residence, 8 King St., Wallingford.
Frederick Scozzari Sr.
MERIDEN — Frederick J. Scozzari Sr., 51, husband of the late Penelope R. (Bourdreau) Scozzari, died suddenly at home Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998.
Born in Meriden Oct. 23, 1947, he was the son of the late Fred and Annie (Potvin) Scozzari. He had lived in Meriden for most of his life and was a graduate of Maloney High School. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served with the U.S. Navy, and he was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church.
He is survived by two sons, Frederick Scozzari Jr. of Troy, N.H. and Anthony Scozzari of Keene, N.H.; one granddaughter, Madison, of New Hampshire; one sister, Julie Scozzari of Meriden; two brothers, Michael Scozzari and Joseph Scozzari, both of Meriden; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Bonnie May and Rosemary and by a brother, David.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend a funeral service Saturday, Dec. 12 at 11 a.m. in the Mausoleum of Sacred Heart Cemetery. Burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the John J. Ferry and Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., Meriden.
