John E. Wisse Jr.

John E. Wisse Jr., a Norwalk resident, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001 at Norwalk Hospital. He was 68.

He died of cancer, according to his family.

Born March 30, 1932, in Port Chester, N.Y., he was a son of the late John E. Wisse Sr. and Veronica C. Byrne Wisse.

Mr. Wisse worked as a toll collector with the state Department of Transportation for more than 20 years.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He received his Domain of the Golden Dragon in 1951 and the Imperium Neptuni Reguis in 1954, which are sailing certificates of accomplishment. He was a former distributor for the Daily Times in Port Chester.

He is survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins.

There are no calling hours.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001 at St. Michael's Lutheran Church, 5 Oenoke Ridge, New Canaan.

Burial is private.

Memorial donations may be made to Blind and Disabled Veterans, American Cancer Society, or a charity of one's choice.

Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St., Stamford, is handling arrangements.

Virginia V. Smith

Virginia V. Smith, a Stamford resident for two years and a former resident of Sanford, Fla., died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001 at Courtland Gardens Health Care Center in Stamford. She was 82.

She died of natural causes, according to her family.

Born Dec. 14, 1918, in Northampton, Mass., she was a daughter of the late Byron and Viola Leone Smith.

Ms. Smith served in the U.S. Army during World War II. She was a member of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps and served as a bailiff in Seminole County, Fla., for many years.

She is survived by a sister in-law, Columbia Smith of Stamford; and two nieces, a nephew and four grandnephews.

Services and burial will be private.

Lacerenza Funeral Home, 8 Schuyler Ave., Stamford, is handling arrangements.

Frances M. Armstrong

Frances M. Armstrong of Annapolis, Md., a former Stamford resident, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001 at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis. She was 81.

She died of a stroke, according to her family.

Born Nov. 13, 1919, in Hamilton, Ontario, she was a daughter of the late Herbert John and Ellen Harris Elliot.

Mrs. Armstrong was active in several local groups, including Newcomers, Suburbanites and Meals on Wheels.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Stamford.

She loved to cook, do needlepoint, travel, play bridge and perform volunteer work.

She is survived by a son, Raymond John Armstrong of Virginia Beach, Va.; a daughter, Lynda Armstrong Willauer of Easton and Nantucket, Mass.; and seven grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, George Armstrong.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Jan. 20, in Annapolis.

Burial was private.

Flora Crane

Flora Crane, a lifelong Stamford resident, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001 at Stamford Hospital. She was 93.

William C. Gowen

William Campbell Gowen of New York City died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001 at Courtland Gardens Health Care Center in Stamford. He was 102.

Helen Jones

Helen Shannon Jones, a lifelong Stamford resident, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001 at home. She was 87.

George Henry Ragsdale

George Henry Ragsdale, a longtime Stamford resident, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001 at his son's home in Bridgeport. He was 96.

He died of natural causes, according to his family.

Born Aug. 5, 1904, in Halifax, Va., he was a son of the late William and Sophia Banks Ragsdale.

Mr. Ragsdale was employed at Ambassador Arms, Plastic-Lite, American Cyanamid and Phillips Laboratories in Stamford, from which he retired.

He was a member of New Jerusalem Church of God and Christ, now Wilson Memorial Church, since 1931. He was ordained a deacon the same year under the leadership of the late Bishop W.M. Wilson. He was a Sunday school scholar.

Mr. Ragsdale is survived by five sons, Henry Leon Ragsdale and Alfred Ragsdale, both of Bridgeport, Wilburt Ragsdale of Orange, George Ragsdale of Stamford and Melvin Ragsdale of Graham, N.C.; a daughter, Regina Cox of Riverside, Calif.; a sister, Rosa Stephens of Stamford; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Anna Mae Marble Ragsdale; a son, Eugene Ragsdale; four sisters, Florence Barksdale, Priscilla Richardson, Elizabeth Williams and Eliza Bailey; and two brothers, James Ragsdale and David Ragsdale.

Calling hours will be 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001 at Wilson Memorial Church, 164 Richmond Hill Ave., Stamford.

A memorial service will follow at the church.

Burial will take place in Woodland Cemetery, 66 Woodland Place, Stamford.

Downer Funeral Home, 31 Stillwater Ave., Stamford, is handling arrangements.

Johannes "Hans" Wilhelmus Vervaat

Johannes "Hans" Wilhelmus Vervaat of Pawleys Island, S.C., a former longtime Norwalk resident, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001 at Georgetown Memorial Hospital in Pawleys Island. He was 70.

He died of cancer, according to his family.

Born Dec. 31, 1930, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, he was a son of the late Johannes Judocus Vervaat and Wilhelmina Josephina Kok Vervaat.

Mr. Vervaat was a graduate of St. Ignatius College in Amsterdam. He came to the United States in 1960. He also lived in San Francisco and Long Island, N.Y.

He was an employee for Pan American World Airways in San Francisco and a private consultant in Long Island and Norwalk for many years.

Mr. Vervaat was a world traveler and a member of Preserve the Wetlands in the Rowayton section of Norwalk.

He was a member of St. John's Church in Darien, and Precious Blood Catholic Church and Small Christian Communities, both in Pawleys Island. He was a sacristan and eucharistic minister in Pawleys Island and Darien.

He was a third-degree Knight of Columbus of Council 11028.

He is survived by his wife, Mabel Livain Vervaat of Pawleys Island; a sister, Maria Vervaat Van Loon of Huizen, the Netherlands; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial Mass was celebrated Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001 at Precious Blood of Christ Church in Pawleys Island.

Burial was private.

Memorial donations may be made to Camp Merry Times for Children with Cancer, c/o Mr. & Mrs. Ted Van Thullenaer, 4569 Bridle Path, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576.

Mayer Funeral Home in Georgetown, S.C., handled arrangements.
