Helen Malloy
Helen M. (née Quinn) Malloy, 90, of Newington and Lord's Point, Stonington, died Tuesday 24 September 2002
Born on 18 September1912 in Hartford, she was the daughter of Peter and Anna (née Capen) Quinn. Mrs Malloy attended Hartford public schools and graduated from the Hartford Secretarial School in 1930. She worked at the Travelers Insurance Co until her marriage to the late James J. Malloy in 1938 and later for the Newington public school system as secretary to the Principal of Newington High School from 1955 to her retirement in 1972.
A resident of Newington since 1938, Mrs Malloy was active in many civic organizations and was a longtime member of St Mary's Parish. She was also active in the Ladies Guild.
Mrs Malloy was also a communicant of St Mary Church in Stonington Borough.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, James E and Evelyn Malloy of Marlborough; a daughter, Holly Malloy of Newington and Stonington; 6 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son Peter J Malloy and her sister Grace (née Quinn) McGillicuddy.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St Mary Church, Newington, on Saturday 28 September 2002 and burial took place in Mount St Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield.

William Reardon
William J Reardon, 77, of South Broad Street, Pawcatuck, died Monday evening 16 September 2002 at the Westerly Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Born in Stonington on 14 April 1925, he was the son of the late Patrick J and Anna Higgins Reardon. He attended local schools and on 11 October 1947 married Angeline (Barravecchia) Reardon in St Michael's Church in Pawcatuck. She survives him.
Mr Reardon served in the United States Navy during World War II and was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with four bronze stars. Mr. Reardon worked as a supervisor with Pfizer Inc. in Groton for 30 years, from which he retired in 1986. He was a member and former Chief of the Wequetequock Fire Department, and headed a group of young firefighters known locally as Reardon's Raiders. He was also a former member of the Pioneer Hook & Ladder Company of the Stonington Borough Fire Department.
Mr Reardon was also a member of the Harley P Chase Post VFW of Pawcatuck, and a former member of the Portuguese Holy Ghost Society in Stonington Borough. He was a member of St. Michael's Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, William P Reardon of Pawcatuck; a daughter, Maryann R Rose of Pawcatuck; a sister, Ellen Grimes of Stonington; a grandson, Christopher Rose of Brighton MA; and a granddaughter and her husband Ainslie and Robert Hickernell of Falls Church VA.
A funeral Mass was held on Friday 20 September 2002 at St Michael the Archangel Church, 60 Liberty Street, Pawcatuck. Burial with military honors took place in St. Michael's New Cemetery.

Annastatia Murphy
Annastatia R Murphy, 82, of Stonington, died Saturday 14 September 2002 at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London, surrounded by her family.
Born on 23 January 1920 in County Wexford, Ireland, she was the daughter of Joseph and Anna Hanlon Radford. She married William J Murphy in Ireland and came to Stonington in 1952.
Mrs Murphy was a communicant of St Mary Church in Stonington Borough.
She is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Ann B and George Smith of Pawcatuck; Cecelia and Eugene Rodrequez of Montville; Monica and Samuel Agnello of Pawcatuck; and Annastatia and John Damon of Westerly; two brothers, Thomas and Cornelius Radford, of Southport, England; a sister, Maggie Monahan of County Wexford, Ireland; 10 grandchildren, Shawn and Erin Smith, Mickey Gillette, Erica Chenot, William, Samuel, and Kevin Agnello, Libby, Laura, and Neil Damon; and three great-grandchildren, Austin Robertson and Cameron and Chloe Chenot.
Mrs Murphy was predeceased by 12 brothers and sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 am on Tuesday 17 September 2002 at St Mary Church in Stonington. Burial was in St Mary Cemetery.

Dorothy Maynard
Dorothy L Maynard died peacefully at home in Noank on Saturday 14 September 2002 surrounded by her family.
Born in Manhattan on 13 February 1921, she was the eldest of five children born to Hugh F and Frances Powles Linden. On 7 November 1942 she married Robert L. Maynard Jr, a merchant ship captain, with whom she was married for 51 years together. In 1957 Capt and Mrs Maynard settled in Noank, where they raised eight children. Capt Maynard died in 1994.
She is survived by her children, Sister Barbara Maynard, VSC, of Pittsburgh PA; Robert L Maynard III of Tavernier FL; Jeffrey P Maynard of Merritt Island FL; Christopher Maynard of Laurel MD; Denise M Mahoney of Noank; Therese D Devens of Groton; Matthew M. Maynard of Lake City FL; and Andrew M Maynard of Stonington; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. In addition, she is survived by her brothers Hugh Linden, William Linden and Donald Linden.
She was predeceased by her sister and best friend, Frances “Frannie” Casey.
A Mass of Christian Burial was given at 10 am on Tuesday 17 September 2002 at St Patrick's Church, Mystic, and burial was at Elm Grove Cemetery.

Elizabeth Traugott
Elizabeth Ewing Traugott, 89, formerly of Greenwich and Stonington, died Tuesday 10 September 2002 at Kendal at Longwood, Kennett Square, Pa.
Born in Germantown PA, she was the daughter of Sharpless and Elizabeth Smith Ewing.
Ms Traugott was a graphic artist who also did interior design. She is survived by her sister, Jane Ewing of Medford NJ.
Service and interment will be private.
Benjamin Helme Sr
Benjamin Irving Helme Sr, 82, of North Road, Groton, died Thursday 22 August 2002 at home after a lengthy illness.
The son of Samuel S and Sarah Ross Helme, he was born in Stonington on 16 March 1920. He attended Stonington High School, from which he graduated in 1939 and where he was named an All-State football player. He attended North Carolina A & T University. Mr Helme served in the United States Army during World War II.
On 2 March 1946 he married Hope Neal in Danielson CT. Mrs Helme died on 3 October 2001. Mr Helme worked at Pfizer Inc in Groton as a mechanic. He retired in 1982. Remaining involved in athletics, Mr Helme coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball in Poquonnock Bridge for many years.
He is survived by two sons, Benjamin I Helme Jr of Mystic and Donald Neal Helme of Fullerton CA; three sisters, Doris McNeil of the Bronx NY; Ethel Tyler of Lynn MA; and Kate Burrell of Pawcatuck; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A brother, Samuel Helme, died earlier.

Alvord Nunes
Alvord “Al” Nunes, 86, of Bayview Avenue, Stonington Borough, died on 8 September 2002, after a long illness. The son of Philip P Nunes and Mary Rego Nunes, Mr Nunes was born on 28 July 28 1916 in West Bridgewater MA. He attended schools in Brockton MA.
On 20 February 1941 he married Anna (Sylvia) Nunes and moved to Stonington with his family in 1947. He retired as the head of security at Pfizer Inc in Groton in 1982.
Mr Nunes was a member of the Stonington Borough Board of Warden and Burgesses during the 1960s and 1970s. While working at the American Velvet Mill, Mr Nunes produced and directed a number of variety shows to benefit St. Mary Church in the 1960s. For a number of years, he also performed as a soloist in other local productions. He was a member of the St. Mary Church choir and was a well known wedding soloist. He served as an auxiliary policeman and on the Stonington Borough Steamers Fire Company. He was also a member of the Portuguese Holy Ghost Society and the Westerly Elks Club.
In addition to his wife Anna, he is survived by daughters Sandra Nunes Maniscalco and Mary Nunes Maranell; sons Phillip and Paul Nunes; daughters-in-law Paticia Nunes and Cynthia Nunes; sons-in-law Philip Maniscalco and Don Maranell; and brother-in-law Joseph Sylvia. He has eight grandchildren: James Hensley, Debra Gorby, Phillip P. Nunes, Robin Bagley, Kelly Donohue, Michelle Blackburn, Anthony Nunes, and Samuel Maranell. He is also survived by a nephew, Aaron Sylvia; and four great-grandchildren, Robbie, Melissa, Justin, and Michael.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 5 to 8 pm Wednesday 11 September at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street in Mystic. The funeral will begin at 9.15 am Thursday at the funeral home and proceed to a Funeral Mass at St Mary Church, Stonington Borough, at 10 am. Burial will be in Stonington Cemetery.

Albert Goring
Albert Edward Goring of Flander Road, Stonington, died at home on Friday 16 August 2002. Born on 1 July 1925 in East Hampton MA, he was the son of Albert E and Flora Gosselin Goring.
Mr Goring attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and the University of Connecticut Law School. Mr Goring practiced law in Litchfield County and later in Stonington. He served in the US Army in World War II.
He married Ruth Walker in Torrington CT on 23 February 1969 and she survives him.
Mr Goring was affiliated with Mystic Fine Arts for eight years and later he opened Stonington Fine Arts in Stonington Borough. He was a member of the Portuguese Holy Ghost Society.
In addition to his wife, Mr Goring is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Naomi and Jerry Porter of Silver Springs MD; a son and daughter-in-law, Keith Allen Goring and Susan Dixon of Norfolk; two sons and daughters-in-law, John Walker and Jacqueline Silva Williams of Middletown and Jamie and Mary Beth Palumbo of Syracuse NY; two sisters, Leanne Isham and Elaine Doerman of Cherry Valley CA; two grandsons, Jonathan William Dixon Goring and Jack Walker Williams; and three granddaughters, Shannon Walker Williams, Sarah Lynn Williams and Jamie Lea Williams.
