Francis A. Barth
CHESHIRE -- Francis Alphonse Barth, 88, husband of Grace Mary Bowman Barth, of Avon Boulevard, passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2003, after an extended illness.
He was born in Rumford, Maine, Jan. 30, 1915, a son of the late Casmir and Brigida Balakas Matulis and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was employed as a truck operator, after which we worked for Geometric Tool Co. as a tool maker and he later worked for the Danjon Mfg. Corp. of Cheshire.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters, Joyce Spiess, Sandra Sczmalc and Barbara Krochalis; a stepdaughter, Nancy Lee Goss; two grandsons, Peter and Glenn Oravec; and two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Samantha Oravec. He was predeceased by a son, Francis E. Barth; a sister, Marion Noreika; and a brother, Edward Barth.
Memorial service Saturday, June 7, at 11 a.m. at Beecher & Bennett, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden. The Rev. Estelle Webb will officiate. Donald J. DellaVecchia
SOUTHINGTON -- Donald J. DellaVecchia entered into rest peacefully at home, Tuesday, June 3, 2003, surrounded by his loving family after a short, courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was the husband for 42 years of Jean Graham DellaVecchia.
Born in New Britain on June 24, 1938, the son of Eleanor (Trotta) DellaVecchia and the late Pascal DellaVecchia, he was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Gibbs Wire and Steel for 34 years. Donald was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a member of the Southington Sportsman Club. He also enjoyed golfing with his golfing buddies and was a member of the Farmingbury CC in Wolcott. He was a true Yankee fan and loved to read novels. Donald was also a member of the Scarpa Shoda Gang and the Calendar House. He was known by everyone to be able to fix and repair anything and everything. His family often referred to him as "McGyver".
In addition to his wife and mother, he leaves a daughter, Kathy Moss and son-in-law, Charles and two sons, Mark DellaVecchia and daughter-in-law, Michelle, all of Plantsville and Tony DellaVecchia of New Britain; he also leaves two grandsons, Brandon and Tyler Moss, who loved their "Papa" dearly; he is also survived by a brother, Pascal DellaVecchia; three sisters, Marie Binkowski and brother-in-law, Robert, Eleanor Welch and brother-in-law, Timothy and Diane Botsacos and brother-in-law, Nick, all of Southington; he also leaves many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and good friends.
The funeral will be held on Friday at 9:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington, to St. Thomas Church at 10 a.m. for a Mass. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Dr. Jeffrey Baker and his staff at the Helen and Harry Cancer Center, and all the staff at the Hospice of Central CT. John M. Fox
SOUTHINGTON -- John M. Fox, 57, beloved husband, father, grandfather and a friend to many, passed away on Wednesday, June 4, 2003.
Born in Newport, R.I., on Feb. 27, 1946, he was the son of the late Gerard Fox of Meriden and the late Suzanne Hertzman of Paris, France. He was a 1965 graduate of Maloney High School in Meriden and worked as the sales manager for Meriden Manufacturing. He was a member of the North Italian Home Club, played softball in the MASA League and a member of Wallingford Country Club, where he was the only golfer to tee and get a hole-in-one on the 4th green. He enjoyed most his trips to his home in Florida with his wife. John served in the U.S. Army 1965-1967 and was stationed in Vietnam from 1966-1967.
He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 34 years, Sharon Maloney Fox; his daughter, Audra Maloney Baston of Southington; his son, Michael John Fox of Plantsville; two grandchildren, Connor John and Cameron Maloney Baston of Southington; his sister, Madleine Gens of Boston; a half-brother, Terrance Fox; half-sister, Kim Pavelkops; his wife's parents, Lester and Barbara Maloney; his sister-in-law and her husband, Diane and Mark Aldrich; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend a funeral service to be held on Friday, June 6, at 10 a.m. at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Joseph P. Gostyla
MERIDEN -- Joseph P. "Gus" Gostyla, 64, of Bronson Ave., Meriden, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at the MidState Medical Center in Meriden. He was the beloved husband of Kathryn A. Michaud Gostyla
Born in Meriden, Sept. 6, 1938, a son of the late Joseph A. and Frances I. Pulaski Gostyla, he had been a lifelong resident and served with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Lebanon Conflict. He was co-proprietor of the former Spiral Staircase Lounge in the Yalesville section of Wallingford for many years. He was permittee for 10 years and a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 35 in Meriden, a member of the Polish Knights of the Blessed Virgin, of Meriden, and a former member of the Meriden Lions Club.
Besides his wife Kathryn, he is survived by his two sisters and brother-in-law, Patricia and Henry Sawicki of Meriden, and Marlene Cutrole of Spring Hill, Fla.; his brother and sister-in-law, Peter J. and Elizabeth Gostyla of Wallingford; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sally and Tom Celotto of Wallingford; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews including Michele, Michael and Marcy, whose special bond grew beyond "uncle" and became an important part of his immediate family. He was predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law Barbara and Michael Petrucelli.

Barbara Gummoe
WALLINGFORD -- Barbara Gummoe, 87, of McGuire Court, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at the Bradley Memorial Hospital in Southington. She was the wife of the late Ralph Gummoe.
She was born in New Haven, April 3, 1916, a daughter of the late Willis and Alice Bronson Coleman. Mrs. Gummoe was a resident of Wallingford for 40 years.
She is survived by a son, David Gummoe, and his wife, Sharon of Yalesville; a daughter, Nancy Alhawamdeh, and her husband, Mohammad of Derby; and four grandchildren, Melissa Rivers, Charles Rivers Jr., Todd Gummoe and Andrea Ryerson; and two great-grandchildren, Gavin and Savannah Rivers. She was predeceased by a brother, Lester Coleman.
A funeral service will be held on Friday at 7 p.m. in the chapel of the B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm St., Wallingford. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. Burial will be private at the Roxbury Centre Cemetery

Anne L. Houlihan
MERIDEN -- Anne Louise Houlihan, 94, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at Meriden Nursing and Rehab Center. She was a resident of Wallingford for several years.
Born in Meriden on June 27, 1908, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Louise Strobel Wachtelhausen. She had been employed at Pratt & Whitney in North Haven and was a member of the First Congregational Church and the Order of Eastern Star.
She is survived by a grandson, David C. Bartlett of Meriden; a great-granddaughter, Meagan L. Bartlett; a great-grandson, David C. Bartlett Jr.; six step-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Julia A. Bartlett. She was predeceased by a son, Robert Charles Bartlett.
A graveside service will be held in Walnut Grove Cemetery

Clara Lewis
WALLINGFORD -- Clara Pelati Dringoli Lewis, 90, of Constitution St., Wallingford, beloved wife of the late Jack Lewis, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at the Skyview Center in Wallingford.
Born in Wallingford, Nov. 18, 1912, a daughter of the late Paul Pelati and Frank and Dina Sassi Dringoli, she had been a lifelong resident. She was employed by the former Stanley Judd Company in Wallingford for many years until her retirement and had also been employed for many years as a waitress at Zandri's Stillwood Inn in Wallingford until her retirement. She was a member, past president, vice president and treasurer of the Libero Pensiero Ladies Auxiliary, a member of AARP and the Wallingford Senior Center. She was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church in Wallingford and a member of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Society and the Ladies Guild of the parish.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Patti A. and Richard H. Shelberg of Cobalt; her son, Dennis B. Lewis of Wallingford and his fiancee, Marie Mariani; her three grandchildren, Richard Shelberg and his wife, Debbie, Lisa Hinxman and Richelle Banning and her husband, Edwin; eight great-grandchildren, April MacAndrew, Nicole, Eric and Alissa Hinxman and Adrenne, Alex, Asia and Malique Banning; her sister, Esther (Mrs. Mario) Tosetti of Hamden; and several cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by two grandson, John Smith and Michael Shelberg; a sister, Marion "Mimi" Fucci.
Her family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St., Ext., Wallingford, Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. from the Wallingford Funeral Home, when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery

Patricia Mitchell
WALLINGFORD -- Patricia Mitchell, 81, of 68 Grove St., Yalesville died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at the Cheshire Convalescent Center. She was the wife of the late Louis W. Mitchell.
She was born in Wallingford, Jan. 13, 1922, a daughter of the late James P. and Eileen Mary Mount Gallagher. Mrs. Mitchell was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Women's Air Corps in New Guinea and Luzon in the Pacific and received three battle stars for her service. She had worked with her husband in their family business, Mitchell's Express, for many years.
She is survived by a daughter, Pamela Stevison of Yalesville; a sister, Roberta Kubeck of Maynard, Mass.; three grandchildren, Kirkland Shipley, Brooke Stevison and Benjamin Stevison; and a great-granddaughter, Madison Marr. She was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Shipley.

Ralph J. Pancallo
NEW BRITAIN -- Ralph J. Pancallo, 89, of New Britain, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003.
Born Nov. 30, 1913, in Calabria, Italy, son of the late Dominic and Mary (Gentile) Pancallo, he came to America when two months old and was raised in Meriden. After marrying Hattie B. (Astranowicz) Pancallo, they moved to New Britain where he raised his family and lived for the rest of his life. He started his career as a journeyman printer at the Meriden Record and then was employed by the New Britain Herald as a printer for many years. He left the Herald in the 1950s to serve as a representative for the International Typographical Union, for which he negotiated contracts between printers and newspapers in New England, New York and all of the Eastern United States. His papers on the history of the Typographical Union were donated and accepted in the Thomas Dodd Library at UConn. After retiring at age 65, he enjoyed spending time with his growing family, tending to his vegetable gardens, spending summers at his home on Nantucket and caring for his dog, Sam, who was his best friend. He was an avid fan and supporter of UConn men's and women's basketball teams and the Boston Red Sox.
Besides his wife, Hattie, of 62 years, he is survived by his four daughters and sons in law, Kathleen and James Moore of Farmington, MaryGail and Richard Neroni of Hanover, N.H., Suellen and Richard MacLaughlin of Longmeadow, Mass., and Lori and Frank Domijan of Berlin; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; He also leaves several brothers and sisters, Grace Pancallo of Newington, John Pancallo of San Mafeo, Calif., Laura Wanta of Weston, James and Dominic Pancallo of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Gloria Arehart of Vienna, Va., and Raymond Pancallo of Cape Cod, Mass. He was predeceased by his sisters, Rose Hehir, Anne Coppe and Teresa Carter.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 7, at 9:15 a.m. from the New Britain Memorial/Sagarino Funeral Home, 444 Farmington Ave., New Britain, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, New Britain. Entombment will be in St. Mary's Garden Mausoleum. Rose M. Pietruski
WALLINGFORD -- Rose M. Porto Pietruski, 84, of North Whittlesey Ave. Ext., Wallingford, died Monday, June 2, 2003, at The Regency House in Wallingford. She was the beloved wife of the late Henry J. Pietruski.
Born in Wallingford, March 2, 1919, she was a daughter of the late Nicholas and Mary DelGrego Porto and had been a lifelong resident. She had been employed by the former Stanley Judd Company in Wallingford for many years until her retirement and was a member at the Wallingford Senior Center.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ronald H. and Donna M. Pietruski; her granddaughter, Courtney M. Pietruski; and her brother, Raymond Porto, all of Wallingford; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Evelyn Unger; and a brother, John Porto.

Laraine M. Smith
CHESHIRE -- Laraine M. Ulbrich Smith of Wallingford Road, Cheshire, fine arts appraiser, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at MidState Medical Center in Meriden.
Born Sept. 13, 1929, she was the daughter of William Christian and Elizabeth Reynolds Ulbrich of Wallingford. She graduated from Lyman Hall High School in 1947 and New York's Traphagen School of Design in 1949. After returning to Connecticut, she worked in the Edward Malley store's interior decorating department. She became the wife of the late musician Harold Smith, with whom she operated Smith's Antiques on Dixwell Avenue in Hamden. Following her husband's death in 1963, she became active as a fine arts appraiser, and was co-founder and secretary of the Maison Auction Gallery in Wallingford. In 1966, she moved to Cheshire, where she was active in Cheshire community affairs and politics, including past service as Democratic Town Committee chairperson, Chamber of Commerce president, Performing & Fine Arts Committee member, and Democratic State Central Committee representative for the 34th District. She belonged to the Cheshire Democratic Women's Club, the Caucus of Connecticut Democrats and the Greater New Haven Peace Council, and was a Justice of the Peace. She was a strong supporter of the Fresh Air Fund and has a large extended family as a result of sponsoring summer visits to Connecticut by New York's inner city children. Laraine was greatly admired for her generous spirit, sense of humor and outspokenness.
She is survived by her son, Tom, and lifelong friend, Terry Masai of Cheshire; her brother, William Ulbrich Jr. of Wallingford; Mickey Chan of Flushing, N.Y., and Henry Lee of Palisades Park, N.J.
Her family will receive relatives and friends Friday in The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wallingford, from 4 to 8 p.m.. A graveside service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Beaverdale Memorial Park in Hamden.
