Elmer L. Wilkey
MERIDEN -- Elmer Lee Wilkey, 90, died Monday, March 24, 2003, at Miller Memorial Community. He was the husband of Sophie Rakesky Wilkey.
Born in Dayton, Tenn., on May 20, 1912, he was the son of the late John and Ann King Wilkey. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in Europe and until his retirement in 1977 he was employed as a supervisor at Pratt & Whitney in Southington. He enjoyed gardening and the outdoors and was an avid New York Yankees fan and wonderful storyteller.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, HelenAnn Volpe of Portland, Ore., and Katherine W. and William Grussi of West Haven; four sons and daughters-in-law, Dewey C. and Shirley Wilkey of Astor, Fla., Felix L. and Kay Wilkey of Evensville, Tenn., Michael O. and Petronella Wilkey of Hopkinton, N.H., and Robert J. and Phyllis Wilkey of Meriden; two sisters, Alleene Hill of Soddy-Daisy, Tenn., and Clara Ruth Woodward of Battle Creek, Mich.; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Elmer Dean Wilkey; four sisters, Thelma Ballard, Pauline Harwood, Gusty Huskins and Caty Revis; two brothers, Archie Wilkey and Larry Wilkey; and a son-in-law, Joseph Volpe.
Relatives and friends may call Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. A private funeral will be held on Thursday. David W. Borchardt
MERIDEN -- Graveside services with military honors for David W. Borchardt, 82, of 73 Newton St., husband of the late Elizabeth Souchuns Borchardt, will be held Friday, March 28, at 1 p.m. at Gethsemane Cemetery, Bee Street, Meriden, with Rev. David Brinkley of St. John Lutheran Church officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden.
Dorothy S. Clinton
ST. GEORGE, Utah -- Dorothy S. Clinton, 89, of St. George, Utah, died Monday, March 17, 2003. She was the wife of the late Foster Rice Clinton.
A lifelong resident of Meriden, Conn., until her retirement from New Departure in 1972, she moved to Frostproof, Fla., then to St. George, Utah. She was the daughter of the late Henry and Clara Francoeur Schea.
She leaves three sons, Robert P. Bartlett of Marietta, Ga., Wayne L. Bartlett of St. George, Utah, and Lawrence R. Bartlett of Wallingford; one sister, Roberta Cassidy of Wareham, Mass.; five grandchildren, Suzanne Noble of Marietta, Ga., Tim Bartlett of Reno, Nev., Jay Bartlett of St. George, Utah, Sharon Mann of East Hampton, and Lawrence Bartlett Jr. of Wallingford; four great-grandchildren, Twins, Caitlin and Crista Noble of Marietta, Ga., and David Jr. and Derek Mann of East Hampton; and several nieces and nephews; also a sister, Florence Marchetti of Meriden who passed away five days later, on March 22. She was predeceased by a brother, Henry Schea Jr. of Daytona Beach, Fla.; a sister, Doris Dandelski of Meriden.
A spring graveside ceremony will be held at a later date.
David P. Curry
PHILADELPHIA -- David P. Curry, 65, of 2664 Livingston St., Philadelphia, Pa., died on Saturday, March 22, 2003, at Northeastern Hospital, Philadelphia.
Born in Meriden on Sept. 7, 1937, he was the son the late John J. and Frances Smith Curry. He had resided in Meriden most of his life, graduated from Meriden High School, class of 1955, of which he was president, and attended Providence College. Mr. Curry graduated from the University of Hartford, receiving his bachelor's degree in finance. He was in the banking industry all his life, most recently serving as branch manager at Washington Savings Association, Philadelphia. He also served with the U.S. Marine Corps, member of A.O.H. in Philadelphia Division 87 and board member and officer of the Northeast Rockers A.A.U. Girls Basketball. David coached the Mayfair Monarchs and led Lancing Youth Organization Girls Basketball team to the 2002 City of Philadelphia Department of Recreation Championship and the 2002 N.E.G.I.C.L. Championship. He was active in sports all his life. He pitched for Little League in Meriden, played all sports in high school, played basketball for Providence College, played on Meriden Knights of Columbus baseball team and the Hartford Twilight League for Herb's Sport Shop. Later in his life, he played in Meriden for the North Italian Home club Softball Team.
He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Cathleen and Ira Long of Ellington; and one son, Brian T. Curry of Deltona, Fla.; "Poppy" will be missed by his three grandchildren, Devon Long and Jessica and Sean Curry; two sisters, Winifred Saunders of Meriden, Clare Lawless of Parkesburg, Pa.; one brother, T. Leo Curry of West Chester, Pa.; several nieces and nephews. David is predeceased by a sister, Margery Scully; and a brother, John J. Curry
The funeral will be held on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden and at 11 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Friends may call prior to the service on Saturday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Joseph F. Coffey Boys and Girls Club of Meriden, 15 Lincoln St., Meriden, CT 06451. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Michael J. Reilly Funeral Home, 2632 E. Allegheny Ave., Philadelphia, Pa.
Wilfred A. Nerbonne
VERNON -- Wilfred A. "Will" Nerbonne, 79, of Vernon, passed away, surrounded by his loving family, Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at al local nursing home. He was the husband of 52 years of Norma (Shaw) Nerbonne.
Born Jan. 6, 1924, in Pascoag, R.I., son of the late, William and Delia (Blanchette) Nerbonne, he had lived in Meriden before coming to Vernon five years ago. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and was a member of the D.A.V. Mr. Nerbonne retired from International Silver.
Besides his wife, he leaves his sons and daughter-in-law, Dennis Nerbonne of Vernon, Robert and Beatrice Nerbonne of Tolland and William Nerbonne of Meriden; his daughters and sons-in-law, Judith and Stephen O'Neil of Watertown, Lynne Zampano of Meriden and Susan and Joseph Balfore of South Windsor; his grandchildren, Lori Cassidy and her husband, Joe, Danielle Zampano, Nicole, Danny, Jennifer, Bobby, Cassie, Denise and Allan Nerbonne, Kyle Balfore, David and Ryan Bower, Damon and Bill Roberts; his great-grandson, Patrick Cassidy; he is also survived by his brother, Raymond Nerbonne of South Meriden; his sisters, Lydia Rivers of Florida, Eleanor Levelee of Warren, R.I., and Lorraine Hopkins of Scituate, R.I.; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 27, at 10 a.m. at the Ladd-Turkington and Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Road (Rte. 83), Vernon. Burial with military honors will be at 1 p.m. in Pascoag Cemetery, Main Street, Burrillville, R.I.
Ruth V. Passler
MERIDEN -- Ruth Vallett Sellew Passler, 97, of Crown Street, Meriden, died Monday, March 24, 2003, at the Curtis Home in Meriden. She was the wife of the late Harry Bruno Passler.
Born in Atlanta, Ga., May 18, 1905, she was a daughter of the late Albert Lusius and Mary Vallette Sellew . She was raised in New London, was a graduate of the Williams Memorial Institute (now known as The Williams School), resided in New London, and had been the secretary of the First Baptist Church of New London for several years, until moving to Boston, Mass., to serve as secretary of the Ruggles Street Baptist Church, where she met her husband. They moved to East Braintree, Mass., where they joined the Weymouth Baptist Church, where she was the past president of the Ladies Guild. In 1986, Mrs. Passler moved back to Connecticut, where she became a member of the First United Methodist Church, in Meriden, where she found great spiritual comfort in her final years. She also became a resident of The Curtis Home, in Meriden, where she was a past president of the Residents Council, and had also served as vice president and secretary. She was best known for being the residents' spiritual leader as she would give the noontime prayer and always took the lead for giving the prayer at the beginning of all meetings. She will be remembered for her marvelous energy, sense of humor and her appreciation for all things.
She is survived by her four daughters, Mary E. Nelson of Newport, N.H., Ruth A. Loomis of Yalesville, Martha J. Mosher of Stratford and Naomi E. Claggett of Newport, N.H.; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Philip C. Sellew of Akron, Ohio, Theodore R. Sellew of Estero, Fla., Paul K. Sellew of Naples, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Richard A. Passler.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Ruth on Saturday, March 29, in the First United Methodist Church of Meriden at 1 p.m. Interment in Mount Hope Cemetery
in Boston, Mass., will be private. There will be no calling hours. Billie J. Gould
MANSFIELD, Mass. -- Billie J. Gould, 69, of Mansfield, Mass., died Monday, March 24, 2003 at the New England Sinai Hospital in Stoughton, Mass. He was the husband of Boda (Engle) Gould.
Born in Walnut Ridge, Ark., Sept. 29, 1933, he was a son of the late Ernest and Susie (Risenhoover) Gould. He was educated in Meriden schools. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was discharged as a Sergeant E-5. He was a Foreman at Hallmark Sweet Co., in Attleboro, which is a Tiffany Manufacturing Co., for many years retiring recently due to illness. He had lived in Mansfield, Mass., for the past 30 years and was formerly of Meriden.
Besides his wife, Boda, he is survived by two sons, John E. Ardry of Alpharetta, Ga., and Rick J. Gould of Attleboro Falls; three daughters, Kathy M. Messier of Kingston, Mass., Tammy L. Tarball of Attleboro, and Kimberly A. Rossini of Westfield, Mass.; three brothers, Ernest Gould of Wallingford, Thomas Gould of Wolcott and Bobby Gould of Meriden; four sisters, Juanita Karmarski of Meriden, Jean Staschki of Guilford, Imogene Barbetta of Meriden and Hettie Sholler of Lebanon, Maine.; also survived by 10 grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 28, at 10 a.m. at the Sherman and Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield. Burial will be in the Massachusetts Cemetery, Bourne at 12:30 p.m. Visiting hours are Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
Florence S. O'Connor
MIDDLEFIELD -- Th interment of Florence S. O'Connor, 82, wife of Charles M. O'Connor of Lakeview Place, who died Feb. 16, 2003 will be held Saturday, March 29, at 10:30 a.m. in the Middlefield Cemetery. All are invited to participate in the committal prayers. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden.
Arthur S. Webster
MERIDEN -- Arthur Stevens Webster, 72, of 461 Pratt St., Ext., died Wednesday, March 26, 2003 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in West Haven. He was the husband for 40 years of Marie Beaudoin Webster.
Born in Meriden on Nov. 1, 1930, he was the son of the late Arthur and Augusta Kiewel Webster. He served during peacetime in the U.S. Navy and had been employed by the Perry Rug Company. He was an avid fisherman and baseball fan.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Cynthia and Rodney Thomas, Denise Rivard of Meriden and Barbara and David Grindell of Wallingford; two sons and daughters-in-law, Arthur and Lynn Webster of Meriden and John and Mary Webster of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a sister, Jane Patzke of Meriden; and was a loving grandfather of five grandchildren, Amanda Webster, Brittany Webster, Kaitlyn Webster, Michael Duffy and Kelly Webster, all of Meriden; he is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Albert Webster.
The funeral will be held Saturday, March 29, at 11 a.m. at the Beecher & Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. The Rev. Randy Somody will officiate. Relatives and friends may call Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Brenda A. Bonomi
SOUTHINGTON -- Brenda Ann Bonomi, 38, of 815 Marion Ave., died Wednesday, March 26, 2003 at Hartford Hospital.
Born in Southington on Aug. 27, 1964, she was the daughter of Lorraine Graham Bonomi of Southington and the late Anthony Bonomi. Brenda was a graduate of Southington High School, class of 1982. She was employed by the Southington school system and Bloomingdale's of Cheshire.
Besides her mom, she is survived by her companion, Scott Evitts; a son, Jesse Bonomi of Southington; a brother, Tony Bonomi and his wife, Carol, and also her sisters, Lorraine and Debbie Bonomi along with a niece, Nicole Meola and a nephew, Christian Meola, all of Southington; as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services will be held graveside Saturday, March 29, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Thomas Cemetery
in Southington. There are no calling hours. The DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington, is in charge of arrangements.
