William T. Zachariewicz

CHESHIRE -- William Theodore Zachariewicz, 88, of Amherst Drive, beloved husband for 62 years to Olga Martiska Zachariewicz, died on Friday evening, March 7, 2003, at home surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Zachariewicz was born in Derby, on Nov. 29, 1914, a son of the late Theodore and Michaelena Zabolotna Zachariewicz. He graduated from the Irving School in 1928. During his football career while attending Derby High School, William made all Housatonic Tackle in 1931 and graduated in 1932. Mr. Zachariewicz was a magna cum laude graduate of New York University, School of Commerce in 1936 with a Bachelor of Science Degree and was an honorary fraternity member of Beta Gamma Sigma. He began his career with experience at Blumenthal Company, Shelton Rubber Company and U.S. Time. He worked for Waterbury Farrell, a Textron Company and retired in 1979 with over 30 years as the head of the accounting department. He was a member of the National Association of Accountants and the Derby Council of Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Zachariewicz served on the Derby Board of Apportionment and Taxation and served the Derby Milford Judicial District as an assistant prosecutor. He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ansonia, its Holy Name Society, Nocturnal Society and a trustee of the Cemetery Association. After moving to Cheshire 42 years ago, William became a member of St. Bridget's Parish and was a Fourth Degree Knight of the Sante Fe Council of the Knights of Columbus.

Besides his wife with whom he would have celebrated 63 years of Marriage on May 18th, William is survived by sons, David Zachariewicz and wife, Deborah of Southbury, John Zachariewicz and wife, Wendy of Meriden; daughters, Catherine Zachariewicz of Cheshire, Wilhelmina DeSandre and husband, Joseph of East Lyme; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Ann Verrastro.

Friends are invited to greet the family on Tuesday, March 11, from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the Hylwa Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Ave., Ansonia, Conn. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ansonia. Burial will be on a date to be announced in the spring in Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Derby. Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice or Franciscan Home Care, 267 Finch Ave., Meriden, CT 06451-2715.

Patrick J. Foley

MERIDEN -- Patrick Jerome Foley, "PJ," 3, entered into heaven in the presence of his parents at the Children's Medical Center of Hartford on Friday, March 7, 2003.

Patrick is the son of Christopher and Jennifer Foley of Meriden. Besides his parents, Patrick is survived by his grandparents, Kathryn Foley of Meriden, Jerome Foley of Wallingford and Elaine Howe of California. Patrick has two great-grandmothers, Grace Foley of Fall River, Mass., and Shirley Powell of Manchester. Uncle and aunt, Rod and Carol Foley DuBois of Wallingford and Aunt Crystal Howe of New Britain. Patrick also has his cousins, Michael, Samantha and Gracey Dubois. Patrick has lots of great aunts, great uncles and cousins that will miss him dearly. He was predeceased by his sister, Meghan Elaine.

Patrick's family will receive relatives and friends at the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street Ext., Wallingford, Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church, 68 North Colony Road, Wallingford, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery in Wallingford. Gifts in his memory may be sent to the Foley Family, 47 Butternut Lane Meriden, CT 06450, or The Histocytosis Association of America, 72 East Holly Avenue, Suite 101, Pitman, NJ 08071.

Charles W. Opalacz

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Charles W. Opalacz, 58, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2003, at home in Columbus, Ohio.

He was the son of the late Benjamin and Beatrice Opalacz, and was employed at the YMCA.

He is survived by sisters, Josephine Bartkowski of Meriden, Conn., and Lillian Berry of St. Petersburg, Fla.; brothers, Richard of Columbus, Ohio and Stanley of Meriden; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Cook & Son-Pallay Funeral Home, 1631 Parsons Ave., Columbus, Ohio, where a service will follow at 8 p.m. Burial will be in Connecticut.

Charles F. Schumann

SOUTHINGTON -- Charles F. Schumann, 92, of 733 Berlin St., died Sunday, March 9, 2003, at Bradley Memorial Hospital. He was the devoted husband of Dorothy (Dunlop) Schumann.

Born in Waterbury on July 30, 1910, the son of the late Charles C. and Adelaide (Sims) Schumann. Prior to his retirement many years ago he was employed as foundry supervisor for Pexto for 42 years. He was a parishioner of St. Dominic Church. Mr. Schumann was a member of the Southington Lions Club, and was one of the original coaches in the Southington Little League, he was an avid square dancer with the Cheshire Cats. Mr. Schumann was also an avid bowler and a member of the Calendar House of Southington.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his loving children, Gail Uccello and her husband, Sal, William Schumann and his wife, Jeanne, and Douglas Schumann, all of Southington; five cherished grandchildren, Cori Uccello, Steven Uccello, Reade, David, Keith and Heidi Schumann; and four great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Elwood Schumann of Southington and Robert Schumann on Guilford.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, March 15, at 10 a.m. at St. Dominic Church, 1050 Flanders Road Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington, has charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the National Kidney Foundation of CT, 920 Farmington Ave. West Hartford, CT 06107.

Robert C. Self

WALLINGFORD -- Robert Craig Self Sr., 83, owner of Fieldstone Dairy Farm of 63 Grieb Road, husband of Janet Magee Self, father of Craig Self of Wallingford, Shirley Self Lagerstrom of Wallingford, died Sunday, March 9, 2003, at the MidState Medical Center.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 11, at 7 p.m. in the chapel of the B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm St., Wallingford. Burial will be private. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. If friends so desire, gifts in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1004, Meriden, CT 06450-1004.

Richard J. Miller

MERIDEN -- Richard J. Miller, 63, of 27 Bret Drive, husband of Mary Hibala Miller, died unexpectedly on Monday, March 10, 2003 in Portland.

Born in Upper Lehigh, Pa., on Nov. 23, 1939, the son of the late George and Anna Shemo Miller, he had resided in Meriden since 1962. Mr. Miller was employed by United Industrial Services of Portland for the past year, and prior to that was employed by Coleco of Wallingford for some 13 years.

Besides his wife, he is survived by several nieces and nephews. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Albert R. Arscott

MERIDEN -- Albert Richard Arscott, 87, of 31 Sunset Drive, So. Meriden, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at MidState Medical Center. He was the husband for 60 years of Stasia Peczynski Arscott and a resident of So. Meriden for 54 years.

Born in Manchester, England on June 14, 1915, he was the son of the late Albert Richard and Jessica Henshall Arscott Sr. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific on the USS Terror during World War II and was employed as a welder at the International Silver Company Eyelet Division, retiring in 1980 after 40 years of service. He was a 50-year member of Masonic Center Lodge No. 97 A.F. and A.M. and was a former member of the Waterbury Ice Hockey Club.

Besides his wife, he is survived by four daughters and two sons-in-law, Alice Quellette of Meriden, Susan Myers of East Haddam, Brenda and Anthony Suraci of Guilford and Karen and Bruce Franklin of Glastonbury; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Olive O'Dea Kazersky; and a brother, Frank H. Arscott.

The funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Beecher & Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. The Rev. Ray Cooley will officiate. Burial with military honors will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. with a Masonic Service by Center Lodge at 7 p.m. If desired, contributions in Mr. Arscott's memory may be made to a charity's one's choice.

Alban H. Barre Jr.

CENTERBROOK -- Alban H. Barre Jr., 73, of Main St., Centerbrook died Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at the Chesterfield Health Care Center, Chester after a long illness.

He was born in Fall River, Mass., on May 25, 1929, son of the late Alban and Florance (Treacey) Barre Sr. He resided in Meriden for many years, moving to Centerbrook two years ago. He was a Corporal in the U.S. Army infantry during the Korean Conflict and received the Bronze Star for meritorious service. He was the owner/operator of the Atlantic Service Station in Meriden, and then employed by the Kuhn Training Center of Meriden until he retired.

He is survived by his son, Scott of Meriden; and former wife, Claire C. Barre; and three sisters, Nathalie DePietro of Meriden, Marilyn Callahan of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Janet Barre of Middletown; three brothers, Lawrence of Meriden and Michael and Dana, both of California. He was predeceased by his brothers, Ronald, Peter and David.

Funeral and burial will be private. Contributions may be made in his memory to the American Heart Assoc., 2550 US Hwy No. 1, N. Brunswick, N.J. 08902-4301. The Robinson, Wright and Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main St., Centerbrook is in charge of arrangements.

Richard G. Cirillo

EVERETTE, Wash. -- Richard G. Cirillo, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003 in Everette, Wash., after a lengthy illness.

Born March 24, 1932 in Meriden, a son of the late Blanche and Dominic Cirillo.

He leaves a wife; four children; two step children; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Mary Lou Thompson of Plantsville; one brother, Laurence Cirillo of Meriden; and many nieces and nephews.

Alfred A. DeCarlo

WALLINGFORD -- Alfred A. DeCarlo, 69, husband of Joan Bertini DeCarlo died on Tuesday, March 11, 2003 suddenly at home.

He was born in Meriden on Nov. 8, 1933, the son of the late Antonio and Anna DiGiovanni DeCarlo. He had resided in Wallingford for the past 37 years. Mr. DeCarlo attended Meriden High School. He was last employed by Stone Container Co. of Portland. He was a veteran of Korean Conflict, having served with the U.S. Navy. Mr. DeCarlo was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and was avid New York Yankees fan.

Besides his wife, Joan, he is survived by daughters and sons, Antonio and Sandra DeCarlo of East Hartford, David and Patricia DeCarlo of North Richland Hill, Texas , Dorothy A. DeCarlo of Wallingford, William G. DeCarlo of Wallingford, Catharine A. McPherson of Wallingford, Robert W. McPherson of North Haven and John J. McPherson of South Carolina; 11 grandchildren, Aaron DeCarlo, Kathrine DeCarlo, Stacy DeCarlo, Jonathan DeCarlo, Jesse DeCarlo, Danielle DeCarlo, Joshua DeCarlo, Jordan DeCarlo, Jaime DeCarlo, Alicia Soule and Calvin McPherson; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Hickey of Bozeman, Mont.; two brothers, Anthony and Lorraine DeCarlo of Meriden, and George DeCarlo and companion, Emily Sabatino of Southington; and several nieces and nephews; he is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Luke and Maryanne Bertini of Wallingford; sisters and brothers-in-law, Marilyn and Harold Whitten of Mile, Maine, Mary and Norman Whitten of Brownville, Maine, Sandra and Walter Cookson of Milo, Maine, Dottie Hughes of Milo, Maine and Kenneth E. Greenlaw of Milo, Maine. He was predeceased by his first wife, Donna M. Fish; a brother, Louis DeCarlo; and a brother-in-law, James L. Hickey.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, March 15, at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden and at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, March 14, from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 300 Research Parkway, Meriden, CT 06450.
