Carol B. Taylor
MERIDEN -- Carol B. Taylor, 59, of 841 North Colony Road, died unexpectedly Monday, March 3, 2003.
She was born in Meriden, May 8, 1943, the daughter of the late Arthur E. and Carmel Vumbacco Taylor. She had been a lifelong resident of Meriden. She was a graduate of Platt High School. She was employed in the office of the Secretary of the State for the past 15 years.
She is survived by her brother and his fiancé, Arthur L. Taylor and Judith L. Porter, both of Newington; also several cousins.
All are invited to her memorial service Monday, March 10, at 11:30 a.m. in the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden. Interment will be private. Her brother requests that she be remembered with contributions to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, Ohio 44720.
Thomas A. Graham
MERIDEN -- Thomas Alvin Graham, 68, of 60 Hanover St., died Wednesday, March 5, 2003 at Westfield Care and Rehab Center.
Born in Meriden on Feb. 18, 1935, he was the son of the late Horace A. and Emily Thomas Graham. He was a high school graduate and was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was employed as a machinist at Hobson and Motzer Tool and Die Shop.
He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Alan A. and Laura Fox Graham; a niece, Jill Graham Casey of Meriden; two nephews, Jeffrey A. Graham of Lafayette, N.J., and George A. Graham of East Hampton; a grandniece, Jessica Lee Cascio of Bristol; and other grandnieces and grandnephews.
The time and date of a spring burial service will be announced. Arrangements are under the direction of the Beecher & Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden.
Robert Herbst
CHESHIRE -- Robert Herbst, 77, of Cheshire, died Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at Yale New Haven Hospital after a long and courageous battle with illness. He was the loving husband of Marie "Mitzie" (Schultheis) Herbst.
Mr. Herbst was born Nov. 4, 1925, in Flushing, N.Y., son of the late Frank and Mae Herbst. He graduated from PS 107 in Flushing, N.Y., in January 1940 and from Bayside High School in 1944. He pursued an electrical degree at Mohawk College at Utica, N.Y. He continued his education under the GI Bill at Champlain College in Plattsburgh, N.Y., until 1949. He graduated from Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., with a BS degree in Electrical Engineering in June 1951. He served as a corporal during World War II in the Philippines from 1944 to 1946 with the Tank Corps. Mr. Herbst worked at GE in Schenectady from 1949 until 1958. He was Head of Test and Head of Medium Induction Motors. He helped develop the first atomic loop system at GE. He became Chief Electrical Engineer at Waterbury Farrel in Waterbury and Cheshire in 1958. Upon leaving that position, he started Intergrated Industrial Systems, also known as I2S in Cheshire, where he was President until 2002, when he became Chairman of the Board. The company moved to Wallingford and Yalesville.
Mr. Herbst was a semi pro-football player in his earlier years and an excellent swimmer. He was Cub Master of Pack 96 for several years. he was an ardent organic farmer and would supply his family and would supply his family and neighbors with produce.
Besides his wife of 54 years, he leaves three sons, Robert Herbst and his wife, Lesley of New Haven, John Herbst and his wife, Jeanne of Haddam and Eric Herbst of Cheshire; four daughters, Donna Marie Herbst of Moodus, Julie Crane of Cheshire and Andrea Wilson and her husband, Justin of Cheshire and Michele Morley and her husband, Peter of Cheshire; and 16 grandchildren, Tara Forbes Murphy of Wallingford, Tiffany Forbes of Cheshire, Adam Herbst of Cheshire, Luke, Matthew, Marie and Wally Crane of Cheshire, Katherine, Julia, Robert and Victoria Herbst of Haddam, Dylan Michael of North Branford, Bradley, Wyatt and Kayla Morley of Cheshire and Taylor Wilson of Cheshire; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Gerard Herbst and his faithful dog, Jake.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 9:45 a.m. from the Slater Funeral Home, 242 South Main St., Cheshire to St. Bridget's Church for a Mass at 10:30 a.m. Burial with military honors will be in Hillside Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Herbst SCSU Foundation, 501 Crescent St., New Haven, CT 06515. This is an endowed scholarship fund for speech pathology or to a charity of the donor's choice.
David S. Hopkins
WALLINGFORD -- David S. Hopkins, 65, retired Wallingford Police Department Sergeant, husband of Dorothy Rose Hopkins, of 47 Carr St., Wallingford, died unexpectedly Friday, March 7, 2003, at home. A full obituary will appear in Sunday's edition of the Record-Journal.
Norman Hutchinson
SOUTHINGTON -- Norman "Hutch" Hutchinson, 78, of Plantsville section, died Thursday March 6, at New Britain General Hospital, after a battle with cancer.
He was born in Chicago, III., on March 2, 1925, the son of the late Norman Hutchinson and Catherine Hames.
Norman was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a tool maker for Fansteel V/R Wesson in Plantsville for many years. For six years, he was a volunteer at New Britain General Hospital, a job he loved.
He leaves his wife, Antoinette Hutchinson of Berlin; a son, Robert Hutchinson and his wife, Holly of Southington; a sister, Alice Sproete of Plainville; a sister-in-law, Carol Hutchinson of Berlin; also his two beloved granddaughters, Jamie Stickles and her husband, Todd of Ghent, N.Y., and Heather Hutchinson and her fiancé, Paul Roy of Hooksett, N H.; he also leaves many nieces and nephews; also surviving is his special friend, Beverly Wight of Plantsville. He was predeceased by a brother, Ronald Hutchinson.
The funeral will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Plantsville Congregational Church, 109 Church St., Plantsville. Burial will be in Quinnipiac Cemetery. Calling hours for friends and family will be on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to The Victory Junction Gang Camp, 311 Branson Mill Road, Randleman, N.C. 27317 or the charity of the donor's choice.
James T. Poitras
SOUTHINGTON -- James T. Poitras, 57, of 72 Muir Terrace, died Thursday, March 6, 2003 at home.
Born in Salem, Mass., on May 5, 1945, he was the son of Margaret Nolan Poitras of Southington and the late William H. Poitras Sr. He had been the night manager of Dairy Farms for 20 years.
Besides his mother, he is survived by his brothers and their wives, William and Laura Poitras of Southington with whom he resided, Frank and Martha Ellen Poitras of Coral Cables, Fla., John and Janet Poitras of New Hampshire and Richard and Constance Poitras of Southington; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
The funeral will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. Donations may be made in his memory to the Charity of the donor's choice.
Herman E. Vuolo
MERIDEN -- Herman E. Vuolo, 87, of 17 Briarwood Drive, husband of Estelle (Rogoz) Vuolo, died on Thursday, March 6, 2003 at St. Elizabeth Center of The Curtis Home.
Born in Meriden on March 18, 1915, he was the son of the late Ferdinand and Raffaela (Pasquirello) Vuolo and was a lifelong resident of Meriden. Mr. Vuolo owned and operated his own barber shop, "Herman's Barber Shop" in Meriden for 51 years before retiring in 1997. He was a member of the Connecticut National Guards. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. He was also a member of Silver City Council No. 2 Knights of a fourth degree Fr. McGivney Knight, past President of the Columbian Club, past Grand Knight of the K. of C., a life member of the Meriden Lodge of Elks B.P.O.E. No. 35, a former member of the Eagles Club Aerie No. 720.
Besides his wife. Estelle, he is survived by one daughter, Lois A. Vuolo of Rockland, Md., four sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert M. and Sharyn Vuolo Reston, Va., Donald N. and Ellen Vuolo of Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y., Thomas J. Vuolo of Meriden, Michael J. and the late Irene Vuolo of Walpole, Mass., six grandchildren, Jeremy, Brendan, R. Michael, Marc, Gary and Adam Vuolo; one sister, Jay Habersang of Middlefield; and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by four sisters, Ann DelGiorno, Mary Warnes, Esther Marinan, Jennie Boziuk; and one brother, Guido.
The funeral will be held on Monday at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden and at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to The Curtis Home, 280 Crown St., Meriden, CT 06450.
Nancy B. Wilson
MERIDEN -- Nancy B. Wilson, of 33 Cone Ave., formerly of Woodbridge and San Luis Rey, Calif., died Thursday, March 6, 2003 at the Coccomo Memorial Healthcare Center. She was the beloved wife of the late France Q. Wilson.
She was born in Kansas City, Mo., Oct. 29, 1914, a daughter of the late George and Bessie Strother Bonnifield. Mrs. Wilson was a member of the Woodbridge Garden Club for many years and was an avid gardener.
She was the beloved mother of Mary Ellen Wilson of Newburyport, Mass., and Linda Novicki and her husband, Clyde of Wallingford and was loved by all that knew her.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Coccomo Memorial Healthcare Center, 33 Cone Ave., Meriden. Burial will be private. There are no calling hours. If friends so desire, gifts in her memory may be made to the charity of one's choice. The B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm St., Wallingford is in charge of arrangements.
Lillian D. Andrews
CHESHIRE -- Lillian D. Andrews, 86, of 150 Cook Hill Road, died Friday, March 7, 2003, at Bradley Memorial Hospital in Southington.
Miss Andrews was born April 10, 1916, in Weehawken, N.J., a daughter of the late Edward and Emma (Brooks) Andrews and has lived in Cheshire for over 70 years. She was a graduate of Humiston School in Cheshire, Hillhouse High School in New Haven and the Teachers College of Connecticut. She also earned her Masters Degree from Boston University. She was a retired educator in the Cheshire school system for over 30 years and in North Haven for six years. She was the first reading teacher in Cheshire and was a teaching principal at Darcy School. She was a member of the Connecticut Education Association, the Connecticut Association of reading research, and was a charter member of Delta Kappa Gamma. Miss Andrews was a former curator and president of the Cheshire Historical Society and was a 73 year member of the First Congregational Church of Cheshire, where she was also a church historian.
She leaves three nieces, Peggy Thompson of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, Catherine Chattin of Cherry Hill, N.J., and Henri Ewaskio of Staten Island, N.Y.; a nephew, Charles Ewaskio of Cheshire; and six grandnieces; and nephews. A sister, Alice Ewaskio of Cheshire is deceased.
A memorial service will be held at a time to be announced at the First Congregational Church of Cheshire. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Cheshire at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church of Cheshire, 111 Church Drive, Cheshire, CT 06410. The Alderson Funeral Home of Cheshire is in charge of arrangements.
