Edith W. Rudolph
WALLINGFORD -- Edith W. Rudolph, 89, of Wrinn St., Wallingford, died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at the MidState Medical Center in Meriden. She was the wife of the late Lloyd Rudolph.
Born in Meriden, Oct. 12, 1913, she was a daughter of the late Owen Wrinn Sr. and Elizabeth Wrinn and had been a Wallingford resident since 1954. She was a graduate of Central Connecticut State University and received her Masters Degree in Early Childhood Development from Southern Connecticut State University. She was employed by the Meriden Board of Education as an elementary school teacher, at the Eli Whitney and Casmir Pulaski Schools for many years. She was a member of the Meriden Education Association, the Connecticut Education Association and the National Education Association. She was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church in Wallingford.
She is survived by her two daughters and son-in-law, Carole R. Evon of Bristol and Kerry E. and William Schacht of Hamden; her son and daughter-in-law, Bruce A. and Katherine A. Rudolph of Wallingford; three grandchildren, Mark and Annamarie Freeman and Robyn M. Freeman, both of Wallingford and CPT David R. and Deborah Evon of San Antonio, Texas ; a great-granddaughter, Dayna Freeman; three sisters, Evelyn (Mrs. Theodore) Bampton, Rosalind (Mrs. James) McCarver and Virginia (Mrs. Burt) Drescher, all of Wallingford; her brother and sister-in-law, Gregory and Shirley Wrinn of Ludlow, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Gertrude Lindsay and a brother, Owen Wrinn, Jr.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian burial, Saturday, at 10:30 a.m. in Most Holy Trinity Church in Wallingford. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery
in Meriden. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory may be sent to the Most Holy Trinity Church Preservation Project 68 N. Diane M. Sacharko
KENSINGTON -- Diane M. (Korzenko) Sacharko, 49, of Kensington, died peacefully on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003 at New Britain General Hospital, surrounded by her family.
Her funeral service will be Saturday at 9 a.m. from the Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's Church, Kensington. Interment will be in Maple Cemetery, Berlin. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Newington Memorial. Because of her love of animals, memorial donations may be made to the CT Humane Society, 701 Russell Rd., Newington, CT 06111.
William Mostad
WESTON -- Mr. William Mostad of Weston, husband of Bernice "Bunny" Mostad, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003 in Bridgeport Hospital.
Mr. Mostad was born in New York City, son of the late Einer and Borghild Mostad and has been a resident of Weston for the past 17 years. Prior to founding his own firm in 1987, Bill had over 25 years experience as a creative director for leading advertising agencies in the United States and abroad and for a major U.S. retailer. These included being Senior Vice President and Creative Director of Saatchi, Saatchi Corporation for New York and Europe; Creative Director of Abraham and Straus; and Vice President and Creative Supervisor at Grey Advertising among others. Bill has worked in consumer categories such as food and beverages; and in service categories for businesses large and small. Bill not received many, many awards, but was also invited to be a creative judge for many advertising and art direction competitions, both domestic and international, including the Clio awards. Additionally, he has been a guest lecturer and speaker at the school of Communications at the University of Tennessee and was professor in the Department of Visual Communications at Syracuse University and most recently, taught at the New York City School of Visual Arts. Bill studied at the Pratt Institute, the Workshop School of Art and the Brooklyn Museum of Art. He was an avid gardener, carpenter, and loved early jazz, bicycling and travel.
Survivors in addition to his wife, include one daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Bill Alderson of Tewksbury, N.J.; one son and daughter-in-law, Ted and Marri Mostad of Meriden; two grandchildren, Jason and Danny Jakeila.
Friends may attend a memorial service, Tuesday, March 4, at 10:30 a.m. in the Saugatuck Congregational Church, 245 Post Road E., Westport with the Rev. John Danner officiating. Interment will be private. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the name of William Mostad to American Association of Advertising Agencies Inc., AAAA Minority Advertising Intern Program, 405 Lexington Ave., 18 Floor, New York, N.Y. 10174. Linton E. Simerl
WALLINGFORD -- Linton E. Simerl, 91, beloved husband of Martha Rodda Simerl, of Ashlar Village, Wallingford, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003 in the Masonic Geriatric Healthcare Center in Wallingford.
Born in Chillicothe, Ohio, a son of the late Henry H. and Altha P. Brown Simerl, he was a graduate of Chillicothe High School and has degrees of C.Ch.E from Ohio State University and M.S. and PhD. From Lawrence College, Appleton, Wisconsin. He was elected to Phi Lamda Upsilon, Tau Beta Pi, and Sigma Xi. He had been employed by the C.H. Dexter LTD, Chrinside, Berwickshire, Scotland, as the General Manager and Director until his retirement several years ago. He previously had worked for the Dexter Corp. in Windsor Locks, the Oxford Paper Co., in New York City as the Vice President for Research and Development and International Operations, the Olin-Mathieson Corp. in New Haven and New York City, the Marathon Corp, Menasha, Wisconsin, and the Mead Corp. in Chillicothe, Ohio and Kingsport, Tennessee. He was commissioned 2nd LT in the U.S. Army in 1935, entered active duty in August, 1941 in the Chemical Warfare Service and had served at the Edgewood Arsenal, MD, Rocky Mt Arsenal, Colo., and the Military Government in Germany. He retired as a Colonel from the military. Following his retirement, he had several consulting positions, including three with the International Executive Service Corps in Ecuador and Sri Lanka. He is listed in the "Who's Who in America" and is a member of the Nathan Hale Chapter of the Retired Officers Association. He is a Life Deacon at the North Haven Congregational Church, and a emeritus member of the American Chemical Society (1945).
Besides his wife, Mr. Simerl is survived by his three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Jane and John Rodeheffer of Orlando, Fla., Margery A. and Loren Howell of Amherst, Mass., and Nancy A. Simerl and Bruce McConnel of Sherberne, N.Y.; his son and daughter-in-law, James H. and Martha Simerl of St Albans, W.Va.; his brother, Eldon Simerl of Nipomo, Calif.; eight grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Marjorie Koblentz, of Chillicothe.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service Monday, March 3, at 2 p.m. in the Activity Room in Ashlar Village. Interment will be private in the Greenwich Congregational Church Cemetery, West Greenwich. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the Yalesville Funeral Home, 386 Main St., Yalesville section of Wallingford. Harriet Z. Darmofalski
CHESHIRE -- Harriet Z. Darmofalski, 84, wife of Frank S. Darmofalski, of 150 Cook Hill Rd., died Friday evening, Feb. 28, 2003, at Elim Park, Cheshire.
Her funeral will be held Tuesday, March 4, beginning at 9:45 a.m. in the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 450 Broad Street, Meriden, with her funeral liturgy at 10:30 a.m., in St. Joseph Church, Meriden. Friends and relatives may visit with her family Monday in the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. A complete obituary will be published in the Monday edition of this newspaper.
George C. Hancock
WILTON -- George Cyrus Hancock, 90, died Feb. 28th in Wilton.
Born July 18, 1912, in Yonkers, New York, he lived in New Haven and Wallingford for many years before retiring to Florida in 1982. He returned to live in Connecticut last October. Mr. Hancock was retired from the State of Connecticut where he bought open space for the Department of Environmental Protection for 27 years. He also founded and served as the first Chairman of the Wallingford Conservation Commission and was regarded as a pioneer in the acquisition of open space for future generations. In his 17 years with the Wallingford Conservation Commission, he was able to purchase over 1200 acres of open space for the Town. He was past President of the American Right of Way Association, The Edgewood Club and The Union League of New Haven. He also was a member of the Elks. He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II
Survivors include his sister, Ruth Dary of Windsor; and a son, George R. Hancock; and a grandson, Jefferson Hancock of Ridgefield.
A memorial service will be held in May.
Avis L. Kirchstein
MERIDEN -- Avis L. Kirchstein, 90, died Saturday, March 1, 2003, at the Masonic Home Acute Care Center in Wallingford. She was the wife of the late Harold Kirchstein, Sr.
Born in Meriden on April 14, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Gustave and Bertha Wusterbarth Lipfert. She was a graduate of Meriden High School, class of 1929. She was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church and the Christian Fellowship Society.
She is survived by a daughter, Sandra K. Artkop of Meriden; and a son, Harold A. Kirchstein, Jr. of Meriden; five grandchildren, Sara Kirchstein of Meriden, Wayne Kirchstein of Meriden, Dean Artkop of Durham, Lori Combs of North Branford and Wesley Artkop of Florida; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 2, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the St. Johns Lutheran Church, 520 Paddock Ave., Meriden. The Rev. David Brinkley will officiate. Relatives and friends may call at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. Burial will be at a later date. Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral Home are in charge of the arrangements.
Harriet Z. Darmofalski
CHESHIRE -- Harriet Z. Darmofalski, 84, wife of Frank S. Darmofalski, of 150 Cook Hill Rd., died Friday evening, Feb. 28, 2003, at Elim Park, Cheshire after a long illness.
Born in Meriden, April 23, 1918, she was the daughter of the late John and Josephine Rozanski Zawacki. Harriet attended local schools and lived her entire life in Meriden until. She moved to Cheshire in 1999. She was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church, Meriden. She had been a volunteer for the Red Cross Blood Program.
Married on July 31, 1937, in St. Stanislaus Church, Harriet devoted herself to her loving husband of 65 years; also her son and daughter-in-law, Frank J. and Suzan Darmofalski of Terryville; her daughters and sons-in-law, Rosalie and James Fitzgibbons of Litchfield, Carolyn Izzo of North Branford and Cheryl and Aidan Nolan of Neutral Bay, Australia; six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her brother, Edmund Zawacki of Glastonbury; and sisters, Jean Yanczura of Plainville and Josephine Cossette of South Meriden. She was predeceased by her brothers, John, Joseph and Chester Zawacki.
Her funeral will be held Tuesday, March 4, 2003, beginning at 9:45 a.m. in the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 450 Broad Street, Meriden, with her funeral liturgy at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, Meriden. John F. Dupuis
PLYMOUTH -- John "Bo" F. Dupuis, 67, of Seibert Drive, Terryville, died Friday at the Bristol Hospital.
John was born, Nov. 27, 1935, in Meriden. He was the son of the late Ernest and Evelyn (Kendall) Dupuis, Sr. Before moving to Terryville 10 years ago he was a resident of Florida and lived in Meriden most of his life. Prior to his retirement he was self-employed as a Diesel Mechanic. He was a charter member of Dade City Moose Lodge #397 and was a Legionnaire of the club. He was also a member of the Franco American Club, Bristol.
He leaves his former wife, Marquerita Dupuis of Florida; three sons, Jeffrey Dupuis of Cromwell, Dennis Dupuis of Florida and James Dupuis of Waterford; four daughters, Debra Lambpert of Freedom, N.H., Laura Jean Dupuis of New Hampshire, Renee Dupuis of Lyons, Ga. and Christine Murray of Dade City, Fla.; two brothers, Richard Dupuis of Seattle, Wash. and Ernest Dupuis, Jr. of Louisiana; four sisters, Joyce Pierce of Terryville, with whom he made his home, Donna Pierce of Florida, Elaine Andrews of Maine and Phyllis Dupuis of Meriden; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sons, Randy and John Jr.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the Scott Funeral Home, 169 Main St., Terryville. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday one hour prior to the service.
