Algimantas Uogintas
WATERBURY -- Algimantas Uogintas, 78, of 647 Washington Ave., died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003 at St. Mary Hospital. He was the husband of Danute (Petruskevieius) Uogintas.
He was born Aug. 1, 1924, in Kaynas, Lithuania, son of the late Juozas and Elenora Uogintas. He worked for Uniroyal before retiring 25 years ago. He was a member of the Lithuanian-American Community of Waterbury and active with the Lithuanian Scouts. He was a communicant of St. Joseph Church.
Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Nijole and Joseph Janik of Meriden and Aldona Uogintas of Waterbury; and two grandchildren, Christopher and Jennifer Janik.
Funeral will be held Thursday at 9 a.m. from the Stokes Funeral Home, 134 Highland Ave., to St. Joseph Church for a Mass at 9:30 a.m. Burial will take place in Lithuanian Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Elaine F. Wood
CHESHIRE -- Elaine Frances (Glendenning) Wood, 76, of 276 Crescent Circle, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, at her home. She was the widow of Robert A. Wood.
Mrs. Wood was born in Rockland, Maine, on Dec. 29, 1926, a daughter of the late Ralph A. Glendenning and Loretta A. (Curry) (Glendenning) Lange. She was a 1945 graduate of Rockland High School and a 1947 graduate of Westbrook Junior College in Portland, Maine, and had also attended the Famous Writers' School in Westport. In the 30 years prior to her retirement in 2001, Mrs. Wood had been employed by the Cheshire Police Department, Jefferson Federal Savings and Loan and most recently, Insurance Programmers Inc. While with Jefferson Federal Savings, she served on the Board of Directors for the Institute for Financial Education. Mrs. Wood was also a gifted writer, and had some of her short stories and commentaries published in Down East Magazine and Parade Magazine in the 1970's. She was a communicant of St. Thomas Becket Church in Cheshire.
She leaves two sons, R. Mark Wood and his wife, Kathy of Cheshire, Christopher S. Wood and his wife, Cheryl of Wesley Hills, Fla.; a daughter, Captain Shelby W. Mills, USAFR and her husband, Tim of Shiloh, Ill.; a brother, Walter Glendenning of La Center, Wash.; two sisters, Shelby McRae of Rockland, Maine and Mary Jean Lakeman of Camarilla, Calif.; five grandchildren; and 12 nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, Feb. 21, at 10 a.m. in St. Thomas Becket Church. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in the Achorn Cemetery
in Rockland, Maine. Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Slater Funeral Home, 242 South Main St., Cheshire. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 5 Brookside Drive, Wallingford, CT 06492.
Antonia Czekalski
WALLINGFORD -- Antonia Czekalski, 91, formerly of 18 East St., and Seymour died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003 at the Skyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was the wife of the late Joseph Czekalski.
She was born in Poland, July 10, 1911, a daughter of the late Matthew and Mary Chwoszcz. She was a member of St. Peter and Paul R.C. Church in Wallingford. She was a devoted and caring mother of Andrew and his wife, Hedwig Czekalski, Cecelia and John Holuba and Mary and Frank Zielinski, all of Wallingford; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, Victor Chwoszcz.
The funeral will leave the B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm St., on Friday at 9:15 a.m. for a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at SS. Peter and Paul Church, North Orchard St. Burial will be in St. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Wallingford. Walter Farion
NEW HAVEN -- Walter Farion, 87, of Clinton Ave., New Haven joined his beloved wife, Julia on Feb. 14, 2003 (Valentine's Day.)
He was born in Nanticoke, Pa., on Nov. 7, 1915, the son of the late John and Mary Farion. He spent the first half of his life in Manville, N.J., and graduated from Boundbrook High School. He came to Connecticut in 1956 and worked as Superintendent of American Creosoting Corporation for many years. Later he worked at Caldor Department Store where he retired from at the age of 73.
He was the father of two daughters, Donna Martin and her husband, Terry of North Haven and Judith Kokoszka and her husband, Peter of Wallingford; he is also survived by a sister, Helen Dec of Manville, N.J., he was the beloved grandfather to five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by brothers, Joseph and Jacob; and a sister, Anna.
His funeral procession will leave the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Ave., North Haven Saturday at 9 a.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. Francis Church, New Haven at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, North Haven. The visiting hours will be Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the CT Hospice, 100 Double Beach Road, Branford, CT 06405 who treated his wife compassionately.
Harry E. Smithausler
NAUGATUCK -- Harry Ernest Smithausler, 86, of 41 Franklin St., Wallingford, a former longtime Naugatuck resident, died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003 at the Masonic Geriatric care Center in Wallingford. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth F. (Kendall) Smithausler.
Mr. Smithausler was born in Waterbury, June 28, 1916, son of the late Henry J. and Emma (Dressell) Smithausler and had been a resident of Wallingford the past five years, formerly living in Naugatuck for many years. He moved to Hawthorne, Fla., where he lived for 21 years. Mr. Smithausler also maintained a residence in Vermont. He was the retired owner of Harry's Dairy Bar for over 20 years which was located on New Haven Road in Naugatuck. He also worked for Peter-Paul Inc., for a number of years. While living in Florida, he was a member of the Hawthorne Volunteer Fire Department and he also enjoyed camping and gardening.
He leaves a son, Kenneth H. Smithausler of Wallingford; a daughter, Carol J. Zwick of Thomaston; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at the Alderson Funeral Home, 201 Meadow St., Naugatuck with the Rev. Marston Price, rector of St. Michael's Episcopal Church, officiating. Burial will be in Pines Bridge Cemetery, Beacon Falls, in the spring. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 6 p.m. until the time of the service. Howard A. Davis
SOUTHINGTON -- Howard A. Davis, 84, of 471 Canal St. Milldale section, died Tuesday Feb. 18, 2003 at Waterbury Hospital. He was the husband of the late Marjorie (Wright) Davis.
Born in New Hampshire, the son of the late James and Agnes (Smith) Davis on Sept. 20, 1918. Prior to his retirement he was employed for 34 years by General Electric in Plainville. He was a Southington area resident for over 60 years. Mr. Davis was a member of the Plantsville Congregational Church.
He is survived by two sons, George and his wife, Marilyn Davis of East Haddam and Thomas Davis of Milldale; two brothers, Norman Davis of Bristol and Ralph Davis of Thomaston; two sisters Helen Furman of Bristol and Pearl Weeks of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.
Christopher Democh
OLD SAYBROOK -- Christopher Democh, 22, of 8 Clearwater Road, Old Saybrook passed away Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003 at the Shoreline Clinic in Essex.
He was born Sept. 20, 1980 in New London, he was the son of Loretta (Lagano) Bogdanski. Christopher graduated from Old Saybrook High School in 2002 and worked for Applicare in Branford through Shoreline Employment. He loved his dog "Guilford" as well as all animals, wrestling, music, crabbing, fishing and superheroes.
Besides his mother, he is survived by a brother, Joseph Bogdanski of Stowe, Vt.; his paternal grandparents, Vincent and Alice Democh of Old Lyme; several cousins, aunts and uncles; and a family friend, Susan Myers of East Haddam. He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Joseph and Josephine Lagana.
Funeral procession will leave the Swan Funeral Home, 1224 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook at 9:45 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at St. John's RC Church, Old Saybrook. Samuel B. Forcucci
SOUTHINGTON -- Samuel B. Forcucci, 47, of 93 Bishop Ave., died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003 at New Britain General Hospital. He was the loving husband of Margery (Barton) Forcucci.
Born in Waterbury on April 20, 1955 the son of Angela (Bramanti) Forcucci and the late Samuel Forcucci. Sam was employed by McLaughlin's Physical Therapy in Southington. He was a parishioner of St. Dominic Church and was a CCD advisor. He was a youth group advisor and attended men's retreats and marriage encounter. He was a kidney recipient from his dear friend, Michael Foligno. Sam was a devoted father and husband who was actively involved in all his children's activities.
In addition to his wife and mother he leaves his children, Amanda, Adam, Aaron and Andrew Forcucci, all of Southington; a brother, Joseph and his wife, Robin Forcucci of Colchester; a brother-in-law, Marshall Barton Jr.; a sister-in-law, Beverly Barton Antosik and her husband, Scott; his mother and father-in-law, Marshall and Geraldine Burton; several nieces, nephews and godchildren; and many cherished friends. He was predeceased by a sister, Lucy Forcucci Stumpf; and a brother, Frank Forcucci.
The funeral will be held Monday 9:45 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington to St. Dominic Church at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery

Rudolph Rochette
MERIDEN -- Rudolph "Joe" Rochette, 87, of Meriden, husband of the late Thelma Thompson Rochette, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003 at the MidState Medical Center.
Born in New Brunswick, Canada on Sept. 26, 1915, the son of the late Roland and Melvina Boutin Rochette, he had resided in Meriden for the past 50 years. Mr. Rochette was employed by Wallace Silversmith of Wallingford for some 35 years, retiring in 1981.
He is survived by two daughters, Mary Briggs of Brooklett, Ga., and Cheryl Dockham of Battle Creek, Mich; five sons and three daughters-in-law, Michael Rochette of Meriden, Ronald and Sandra Rochette of Booth Bay Harbor, Maine, David and Michele Rochette of Kensington, Robert Rochette of Meriden and John and Diane Rochette of Meriden; 21 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Jeanette Gaboriault of Greensboro Bend, Vt., Anndreane Herring of Moorseville, N.C., Jane Boisclair of Meriden and Anne Lambert of Hardwick, Vt.; one brother, Romeo Rochette of Meriden; also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by several sisters and brothers.
The funeral will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden and at 10 a.m. at Holy Angels Church. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.
Felix G. Swistak
WALLINGFORD -- Felix G. Swistak, 88, of North Colony Road, Wallingford beloved husband of Mary Furman Swistak, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at the MidState Medical Center in Meriden.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend a memorial Mass of Christian burial on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 10:30 a.m. in SS. Peter and Paul Church in Wallingford. Interment in St. Stanislaus Cemetery
