Thomas E. Grillo
WALLINGFORD -- Thomas E. Grillo, 79, of 15 Jamestown Circle, Wallingford, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003 at the Masonic Geriatric Healthcare Center, Wallingford. He was the husband of the late Winifred J. Warren Grillo.
Born in New Haven on Oct. 8, 1923, he was the son of the late Thomas and Julia Mongillo Grillo. He was a resident of North Haven for 40 years, moving to Prospect for eight years and later to Wallingford in 1997. He was a Special Agent for the Treasury Dept., for 30 years and later worked as Private Investigator. He started the Retired Federal Internal Revenue Employees Union. A World War II U.S. Army veteran and a survivor of the Battle of the Bulge, he started the CT Chapter of the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the American Legion, the VFW and the Non-Commissioned Officers Assoc. He was co-founder of the North Haven Midget Football League and the Babe Ruth League.
Father of Thomas and Anne Grillo of Aiken, S.C., Paul and Lorraine Grillo and Jeanne Grillo, all of Wallingford, Mark and Karen Grillo of Kennesaw, Ga., Terry and Michael Kelly of Wallingford, Peter and Jennifer Grillo of Palm Beach, Fla., Mary and Mark Servetnick of Meriden and the late Julia Slater; also survived by 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Florence Grillo; and a brother, Eugene Grillo.
His funeral procession will leave the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Ave., North Haven Monday at 9:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. Therese's Church, North Haven at 10 a.m. Interment with full military honors will follow in All Saints Cemetery, North Haven. Anthony R. Barillaro
MERIDEN -- Anthony R. Barillaro, 79, husband of Claire T. Ceruti Barillaro, died on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at MidState Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born in Meriden, Feb. 6, 1923, he was the son of the late Henry and Stella Niemic Barillaro. Mr. Barillaro spent 20 years in California after marrying Claire and then returned to Meriden. He was employed by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft for many years retiring in 1993. He was a veteran of World War II having served with the U.S. Marine Corp. Mr. Barillaro was a devoted parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Church. He was a member of the Meriden Antique Veterans and the Senior Citizens Center. He volunteered his time delivering food to the needy and homeless. Mr. Barillaro enjoyed spending time with his grandson, Duke, and playing bingo on Wednesdays at K-Mart.
Besides his wife, Claire, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Stuart Andrade of Meriden; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Kevin and Fran Barillaro, and Danny Barillaro, all of Southern California; two grandchildren, Duke Andrade and Gina Barillaro; three sisters, Marie Montagnon, Jeannette Mase and Loretta DeManche, all of Meriden; a brother, Eugene Barillaro of South Meriden. Mr. Barillaro is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph and Edward Barillaro.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at 10:15 from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St. and at St. Rose of Lima Church. Entombment with military honors will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery
Mausoleum. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 3 to 7 p.m. If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, St. Casmir Drive, Meriden, CT 06450.
Maureen S. Maxted
CHESHIRE -- Maureen (Swift) Maxted, 70, of 957 Coleman Road, wife of Charles A. Maxted, died Saturday, Jan. 18th at her home.
Mrs. Maxted was born in New Haven, Oct. 7, 1932, a daughter of the late Raymond and Emily (Miers) Swift and had been a Cheshire resident for the past 45 years, moving here from Hamden. Mrs. Maxted was a graduate of New Haven Teachers College and received her master's degree in History from Trinity College and her sixth year certificate from Southern Conn. State University. She taught in Hamden and Cheshire for a number of years and then received her paralegal certification from Southern Conn. State University and worked in banking and later was a paralegal with the law firm of Dana and Wiggins. She was a member of the Southern Conn. State University Alumni Assoc., the Friends of the Library in Cheshire and enjoyed golfing and bowling.
Besides her husband of 46 years, she leaves two sisters, Roberta S. Raucci of East Haven and Joyce S. Lewis of Hamden.
Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to Southern Conn. State University, 501 Crescent St., New Haven, CT 06515. The Slater Funeral Home, 242 South Main St. is in charge of arrangements.
Mary S. Steeves
NEW HAVEN -- Mary Steeves, 88, formerly of Lexington Avenue, Fair Haven section of New Haven, beloved wife of 62 years of the late Raymond F. Steeves, Sr., died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at The Connecticut Hospice in Branford.
Mrs. Steeves was born in Wallingford, May 31, 1914, a daughter of the late John B. and Katherine Szczerba Sabota and had been a resident of Fair Haven since 1950. She had been employed by the Knights of Columbus Insurance Company of New Haven for many years, and previously been employed by the Edward Malley Company in New Haven. She was a parishioner of SS. Peter and Paul Church in Wallingford.
She is survived by her daughter, Karen Steeves Helland of Columbia, S.C.; her two sons and daughter-in-law, Dwight G. Steeves of Fairfax, Calif. and Richard W. Steeves and his wife, Patricia O'Reilly Steeves of Guilford; four grandchildren, Frank A. Helland, Jr., Richard Helland and his wife, Allie Helland, Christine Steeves, and Richard F. Steeves and his wife, Dr. Corrie Steeves; two sisters, Ann (Mrs. Joseph) Bober and Eleanor (Mrs. Theodore) Damm, both of Wallingford; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Raymond F. Steeves, Jr.; her sister, Victoria Lacy; two brothers, John J. Sabota and Judge Francis R. Sabota; and her son-in-law, Frank A. Helland, Sr.
Funeral services will be privately held at the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street, Ext., Wallingford. Interment will be in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Wallingford. There will be no calling hours. Sandra Trybulski
MERIDEN -- Sandra Trybulski, wife of David Trybulski and mother of Eric Trybulski, died Jan. 18, 2003, at her home in Meriden. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Stempien Funeral Home. A more complete obituary will be available in Monday's edition.
Allen L. VanDerMaelen
DELTONA, Fla. -- Allen Lee VanDerMaelen, 61, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Friday, Jan. 17, 2003.
Born in Hamden, on June 9, 1941, he moved from Wallingford to Deltona in 1986.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 40 years, Delores Barra VanDerMaelen and daughter and son-in-law, Denise and David Bosnyak of Jacksonville, Fla.; and daughter, Dawn Brown of Deland, Fla.; four grandchildren who adored their "Poppy" and will dearly miss him, Rachel, Nicholas, Mckenzie and Lauren. He is also survived by his mother, Mildred MacKenzie of Wallingford; brothers, Roger VanDerMaelen of Talladega, Ala. and David VanDerMaelen of Wallingford; "brother-in-his-heart, Bruce Pantani of Branford; and his faithful mutt "CoCo". Allen was predeceased by his infant son, Allen Jr.; and a sister and brother, Peggy Bonnardi and John VanDerMaelen.
Allen cherished his family, grandchildren and the friends he made wherever he went. He loved life and courageously battled health concerns for over 30 years to be with those he loved.
Viewing for family and friends will be Monday, Jan. 20 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Baldauff Family Funeral Home, 1233 Saxon Blvd., Deltona, Fla. A gathering to celebrate his life will follow immediately after the viewing and services on Monday evening. His remains upon cremation will be placed with his son in Connecticut and over the ocean he loved at a later date.
Errol M. Warner Jr.
WALLINGFORD -- Errol Merle Warner, Jr., 66, of Chimney Sweep Road, Yalesville section of Wallingford, husband of Teressa Fassett Warner, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, while vacationing at his winter residence in Orlando, Fla.
Born in Hamden, April 12, 1936, a son of Catherine Nedovich Warner of Wallingford and the late Errol M. Warner, Sr., he had been a Wallingford resident for many years. He had been employed by the Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Corporation for 38 years until his retirement as a Superintendent in March of 1992. He was an active outdoorsman, and was a member of the New Haven Raccoon Club in Durham, and an avid golfer, fisherman and hunter. He was always very involved in his community and had been a member of the Yalesville Volunteer Fire Department, a member and past president of the Yalesville-Wallingford Lions Club, an active Shriner, he was a member of the Arabian Shrine Club, Meriden area, the Lodge Council Chapter Hartford Consistory, the Sphinx Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. in Newington and a member of the Compass Lodge No. 9 A.F. and A.M. of Wallingford. While in Orlando he was a volunteer with the Inner City Youth Program teaching golf.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by his three daughters, Lynn-Ann Warner and her husband, Constantino Garcia of Gijon, Spain, Teri Siskos and her husband, Peter of Granby, and Dawn Gogliettino and her husband, Guy; his son, Errol M. (Buzz) Warner, III and his friend, Brenda Amato, all of Wallingford. He was the devoted and loving grandfather of Adrian and David Garcia Warner, Peter and Alexandra Siskos, Guy, Vanessa and Sonia Gogliettino, and Lauren Warner; his two step-daughters, Cindy Bouvah of Wallingford and Cheryl McBey of Lyndonville, N.Y.; his three step-grandchildren, Daniel Desmond, and Lilith and Elysse Fisher; his sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Ronald Oliver of Little River, S.C.; and his brother and sister-in-law, Roderick and Karen Warner of Tucson, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews. His family and friends will lovingly remember him as a man who lived life to the fullest, was always ready to lend a hand, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
His family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street, Wallingford, Wednesday evening from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Memorial services will be held in the Wallingford Funeral Home, Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. Joseph Piekarski
WALLINGFORD -- Joseph Piekarski, 89, of Hope Hill Road, beloved husband of Edna Simeone Piekarski, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003 at the Meriden Center.
Born in Wallingford August 30, 1913, a son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Topa Piekarski. He was a lifelong Wallingford resident. He had been employed by the International Silver Company for many years until his retirement and was a parishioner of SS. Peter and Paul Church.
Besides his wife, he is survived by several nieces and nephews including Richard J. and Catherine R. Pierkarski of Wallingford and Frank E. Pierkarski of Cheshire; and several grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by five sisters, Elizabeth and Helen Piekarski, Louise Sawyer, Catherine Treloar and Jennie Golanski; and four brothers, John, Frank, Michael, and Bernard Piekarski.
His family will receive relatives and friends at the Yalesville Funeral Home, 386 Main Street, Yalesville, Tuesday morning from 11:15 a.m. until 12:15 p.m., when the funeral cortege will proceed to SS Peter and Paul Church, Wallingford where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Interment will be in SS Peter and Paul Cemetery. Lester E. Slie
WALLINGFORD -- Lester E. (Tucker) Slie, 81, of 18 Green St., died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at the CT Hospice in Branford. He was the husband of Julia Simon Slie.
He was born in North Branford, a son of the late Robert and Sadie Appel Slie. Until his retirement he was a supervisor and foreman for the International Silver Co. He was a parishioner of the Most Holy Trinity Church in Wallingford and sang in the church choir for many years as well as the Wallingford Choral Society. Mr. Slie was a graduate of the Milcin Institute of the University of New Haven. A veteran of World War II having served in the 8th Air Force in England and France, he was a member of the V.F.W. Major Raoul Lufbery Post No. 591, Wallingford. He was an avid golfer and was a member of Hunter's Golf Course in Meriden.
In addition to his wife, Julia, he is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Bensen of Middlefield and Rosemary Mesaric of Danbury; two brothers, Robert Slie, Jr. of Scottsbluff, NB and Donald Slie of Westminster, Vt.; three sisters, Shirley Stevens of Wallingford, Evelyn Simon of Wallingford and Harriet Augur of Jacksonville, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Matthew Bensen, Heather Bensen Neal, Julie Mesaric, Jason Komerowski, Kelly Komerowski, Jennifer Piccirillo and Charles Cabral; and one great-granddaughter, Chelsea Rose Piccirillo. He was predeceased by a daughter, Cynthia Komerowski; and three brothers, Arthur Slie, Raymond Slie and Charles Slie; and two sisters, Virginia Wuskle and Mildred Derouin.

Elm St., Wallingford on Wednesday at 9:45 a.m. to the Most Holy Trinity church, 84 No. Colony St., Wallingford for a Mass of Christian burial at 10:30 a.m. Burial with military honors will be at St. John Cemetery.
