Antoni Gaszek
NEW BRITAIN -- Antoni Gaszek, 80, of New Britain, reunited with his beloved wife, Jozefa, on Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, at New Britain General Hospital.
Born on Jan. 16, 1922, in Poland, Mr. Gaszek lived in New Britain for the past 25 years and was a member of Sacred Heart Church, New Britain. He was formerly employed by New Britain General Hospital for many years.
A loving father and grandfather, he leaves his daughter, Irene Koczak and her husband, Richard of Wallingford; his grandchildren, Richard Koczak Jr. and his wife, Cindy, Tatiana Goldberg and her husband, Jon; and his three great-grandchildren, Samantha, Nichole and Nina Koczak.
His funeral services will be held Thursday at 9:30 a.m. from the Burritt Hill Funeral Home, 332 Burritt St., New Britain, followed by a Mass of Christian burial, at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, New Britain. Relatives and friends are invited to call Thursday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Burritt Hill. Edward W. Hogan
WALLINGFORD -- Edward W. Hogan, 80, of Morgan Drive, Wallingford, beloved husband of the late Barbara Hall Hogan, died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, at the MidState Medical Center in Meriden.
Born in Belfast, Maine, June 3, 1922, he was a son of the late Edward and Julia O'Leary Hogan and had been a Wallingford resident for over 50 years. He was employed by Colt Firearms of Hartford as a production engineer for many years until his retirement, and was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Marine Corps. He was member of the Second Company Governor's Foot Guard of New Haven, a member of the Rifle Team of the Second Company, and a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church in Wallingford.
He is survived by his two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen Hogan Julin and Douglas Julin of Hyattsville, Md., and Kathleen Hogan William and Robert William of Baltimore, Md.; his four sons and three daughters-in-law, Michael and Lisa Samuelson Hogan of Opelika, Ala., Stephen and Linda Hogan of Stratford, Kevin Hogan of Meriden, and Kerry and Jeanne Hogan of Wallingford; and his four grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Larry Hogan.
His family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St., Ext., Wallingford, Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 9:30 a.m. from the Wallingford Funeral Home when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment in the State Veterans Cemetery
in Middletown will be private. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be sent to the charity of one's choice.
Steven M. Melnick
SOUTHINGTON -- Steven M. Melnick, 42, of Wilbur St., in the Plantsville section of Southington, died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, at Bradley Memorial Hospital.
Born in Southington, July 1, 1960, son of Joan Cowles Melnick and the late Safron Melnick, he had been a lifelong Southington resident. Mr. Melnick worked at the Meriden-Wallingford Society for the Handicapped in Meriden.
In addition to his mother, Joan, he leaves two brothers, Bryan and Edward Melnick and one sister, Holly Melnick, all of Plantsville.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 9, at 11 a.m. at the Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home, 975 South Main St., Plantsville. Burial will follow in South End Cemetery. Calling hours are from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday prior to the service.
James Tomlin-Smith
MERIDEN -- James Tomlin-Smith, 57, of Middletown, died suddenly Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, in Waterbury as a result of an accident on I-84.
Born in Lincolnton, N.C., on Jan. 9, 1945, the son of Mildred Tomlin-Smith of North Carolina and the late James A. Smith, he had resided in Meriden for the past 35 years. He attended schools in North Carolina and was most recently employed by CCX Trucking Company.
Besides his mother, he is survived by one daughter, Tonya Tomlin of Middletown; one son and daughter-in-law, Billy R. and Lender Smith of Charlotte, N.C.; three grandchildren, Wessley and Christian Tomlin and Jessica Carnegie, all of Middletown; two sisters, Claudette Morales of North Carolina and Shirley Smith-Jones of New Jersey; one brother, Dennis Smith of Meriden; also several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held on Thursday, Jan. 9, at 11 a.m. at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, with the Rev. Vance Cotton of the Shiloh Baptist Church of Middletown officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and prior to the service Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m.
Vera H. Trofimchik
VERO BEACH, Fla. -- Vera H. Trofimchik Fulford, 52, of Vero Beach, Fla., died Dec. 28, 2002, after a prolonged fight with ALS.
Born in Meriden in 1950, and grew up in Wallingford. A graduate of Lyman Hall High School, class of 1968. She moved to Vero Beach, Fla., 28 years ago. She owned and operated the Very Vero Gift Shop in Vero Beach, Fla.
Vera is survived by a daughter, Jacqueline Rossi of Vero Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Mary Pepe and Carol Geremia, both of Vero Beach, Fla.; and a brother, Peter Trofimchik of Wallingford. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

John T. Clements Jr.
WESTBROOK -- John T. Clements Jr., 76, of Wangum Road, Westbrook, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003 at home.
He was born and raised in Meriden on Nov. 28, 1926, son of the late John T. and Helen (Henry) Clements Sr. He joined the family Jewelry business, Clements Jewelers, Meriden in 1945 and retired in 2002. He was a Certified Gemologist, GIA. He served on the USS Webster during World War II. He was past president of the Meriden Rotary Club. He was a member of St. Marks Church, the U.S. Power Squadron, Middlesex County Sheriffs Association, and he was a former chairman of the Westbrook Harbor Commission.
He is survived by a son, John C. Clements of Westbrook; two daughters, Lynn Clements of Branford and Janet Dickey of Westbrook; four grandchildren, Katherine Clements, Geoffrey Dickey, Lili Dickey and Kevin Dickey.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Mark's Church, McVeigh Road, Westbrook. Burial with military honors will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Leo G. Conary
WALLINGFORD -- Leo G. Conary, 86, of So. Cherry St., Wallingford, died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003 in the Harbor Hill Health Care Center in Middletown. He was the beloved husband of Eleanor F. Snavely Conary.
Born in Vinal Haven, Maine, Feb. 24, 1916, a son of the late Everett and Hazel Holbrook Conary, he had lived in Maine before moving to Wallingford, where he had lived for many years. He later moving to Lehigh Acres, Fla., where he had lived for 23 years before returning to Wallingford two years ago. Mr. Conary had been employed by the Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine, during World War II and later had been employed by the Suburban Market in Wallingford for many years. He was a member of the Yalesville United Methodist Church. He was an avid hunter and golfer and had a special love for children.
Besides his wife, Mr. Conary is survived by his three daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis and John Drescher of Wallingford, Sherryl and Arnie Willhire of the Yalesville section of Wallingford and Gail and Robert Coskey of Wallingford; his grandchildren, Kayla, Kim, Renee, Lori, Marc and Colleen; his three brothers, Henry A. Conary, of Warren, Maine, Harold J. Conary of Maine and Florida and Elmer E. Conary, of Maine; and several nieces, a nephew and several grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Norma Vida "Tina" Conary; his two sisters, Erma Conary Holbrook and Viola E. Conary Billings; and his four brothers, Everett E. Conary, Walter W. Conary, Lyford B. Conary and Calvin L. Conary.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Yalesville United Methodist Church. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the Yalesville Funeral Home 386 Main St., Yalesville section of Wallingford. Doris N. Fox
ESSEX -- Doris N. Fox, 93, wife of the late Dr. George G. Fox, died peaceably on Jan. 6, 2003 at the Essex Meadows Health Center in Essex. She had Parkinson's Disease.
The daughter of the late William H. and Pauline C. Niebour, she was an honor student at Meriden High School. She and her husband lived most of their lives in Meriden and Wallingford before moving to Essex in 1989. During the 1970's they also maintained a home in St. Croix, USVI. Mrs. Fox was involved in a number of volunteer activities in a leadership role including the Meriden Girl's Club, The Curtis Home, The Charity Club and The American Red Cross. She and her husband were members of the Shuttle Meadow Country Club in New Britain.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Donald G. Fox of Gaithersburg, Md.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a number of other family members. She was also predeceased by a son, Dr. Richard W. Fox; and a brother, Arthur Niebour.
A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church in Essex on Monday, Jan. 13, at 10 a.m. followed by interment at the Walnut Grove Cemetery
in Meriden. A reception will follow at Essex Meadows in Essex. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements by Robinson, Wright, and Weymer Inc., 34 Main St., in Centerbrook.
Blonteen Neal
MERIDEN -- Mrs. Blonteen Neal, of 78 Park St., wife of the late Ray Neal departed this life at home on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003 after a short illness.
Born in Bamburg, S.C., on April 29, 1924, the daughter of the late Don and Essie Rice, she lived in Meriden for the last 52 years. Mrs. Neal was employed by New Departure-Hyatt Bearings Division of GM, retiring 15 years ago.
She leaves to cherish her memories, two sons and a daughter-in-law, Barry and Laurie Neal of Middletown; Gary Neal of Tulsa, Okla.; one sister, Mrs. Clara Newton of Meriden; four grandchildren, Samantha, Gary Jr., Zachary and Brandon; four great-grandchildren, Cory, Breanna, Rayshawn and Raymond; a god-daughter, Barbara Lucas of Meriden; also several nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by one brother, Mr. Van Rice.
The funeral will be held on Friday, Jan. 10, at 12 p.m. at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden with Rev. Willie J. Young officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home prior to the service from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
