Maurice S. Giordano of Cliffside Park,
N.J., died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001 at Passiac Beth Israel Hospital in Passiac, N.J. He was 65.
He died of post-surgical complications, according to his family.
Born Jan. 19, 1935, in Stamford, he was the son of the late Antonio and Maria Gasparini Giordano.
Mr. Giordano graduated from Stamford High School in 1952. He owned and operated several dry-cleaning establishments in Stamford and New Jersey. He was an avid boatsman and owned and trained horses for harness racing in Freehold, N.J. He lived in New Jersey for the past 18 years.
He is survived by his former wife, Elaine Low Giordano of Shelton; a son, Robert A. Giordano of Stamford; four daughters, Barbara M. Cavuoto and Marianne Lutkins, both of Shelton, Laura J. Chrostowski of Darien and Elizabeth Scherer of Hawthorne, N.J.; a sister, Angelina Santoro of Stamford; and eight grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Sandy Giordano.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. today, Jan. 8, 2001 at Sacred Heart Church, 37 Schuyler Ave., Stamford.
Burial will follow in Queen of Peace Cemetery, Rockrimmon Road, Stamford.

Alfons Kulowiec
Alfons Kulowiec, a Stamford resident for 51 years, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001 at Stamford Hospital. He was 88.
He died of natural causes, according to his family.
Born Feb. 10, 1912, in Bialystok, Poland, he was a son of the late Vincent and Rozalja Malinowska Kulowiec.
Mr. Kulowiec was an inspector at Pitney Bowes for 25 years, retiring in 1977. He was a member of the company's Oval Club. He served in the Polish army and fought at Monte Casino in World War II.
He was a communicant of Holy Name of Jesus Church and its St. Joseph's Brotherly Aid Society in Stamford.
He is survived by a sister, Romualda Osinska of Poland; and five cousins, Joseph Kulowiec and Walter Kulowiec of Stamford, Edmund Kulowiec of Bridgewater, John Kulowiec of Darien and Emily Symeon of Stamford.
He was predeceased by his wife, Bertha Kondraski Kulowiec; and three sisters, Stefania Kulowiec, Branislawa Kulowiec and Wladyslawa Kulowiec.
Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001 at the Gerald Bosak Funeral Home, 9 Pulaski St., Stamford.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001 at Holy Name of Jesus Church, 369 Washington Blvd., Stamford.
Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Darien.
Carolyn F. Otto
Carolyn Feldmann Otto, a Greenwich resident for 52 years, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001 at home. She was 80.
She died of natural causes, according to her family.
Born April 2, 1920, in New York City, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Charlotte Feldmann.
Mrs. Otto was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Greenwich.
She is survived by a son, John Otto of Greenwich; three daughters, Carolyn Suzanne Carter, Diane Otto and Karen Otto, all of Greenwich; and five grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, John F. Otto Sr.

Carmela Sposito
Carmela Sposito, a longtime resident of the Bronx, N.Y., died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Yonkers, N.Y. She was 100.
She died of natural causes, her family said.
Born Oct. 14, 1900, in Bone, Algeria, she was the daughter of the late Antoine Mancuso and Cordina Gargiulo Mancuso.
Mrs. Sposito is survived by a son, George Sposito of Darien; a daughter, Yolanda Curcuruto of Commack, N.Y.; a brother, Auguste Mancuso of Marseilles, France; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, Mrs. Sposito was predeceased by her husband, Victor Sposito.

Mildred V. VanPatten
Mildred V. VanPatten, a Norwalk resident, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001 at Norwalk Hospital. She was 89.
She died of heart failure, according to her family.
Born April 5, 1911, in Greenwich, she was a daughter of the late Louis and Virginia Mamone Berlingo.
Mrs. VanPatten was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Hubert P. VanPatten of Greenwich; two sons, Philip J. Passero of Norwalk and Marino Passero of New Canaan; a daughter, Marcelene Brabender of Huntington Beach, Calif.; a brother, Arthur Berlingo of Sun City, Fla.; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001 at the Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Ave., Norwalk.

Ralph S. Winn
Ralph Steven Winn, a lifelong Stamford resident, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001 at Stamford Hospital. He was 57.
He died of cardiac arrest, according to his family.
Born Feb. 4, 1943, in Stamford, he was a son of the late James and Elizabeth Whitlow Winn.
Mr. Winn attended Union Baptist Church in Stamford. He worked as a technician on various jobs.
He is survived by a daughter, Janet Winn of Stamford; two brothers, James W. Winn and Thomas E. Winn, both of Stamford; a sister, Barbara Schmidt of Stamford; three grandchildren; a niece and four nephews.
Calling hours are 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10 at Downer Funeral Home, 31 Stillwater Ave., Stamford.
A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will follow in Fairfield Memorial Park, 230 Oaklawn Ave., Stamford.
Otto J. Calder
Otto J. Calder, a Stamford resident who spent more than 25 years as a teacher, administrator and school board member, has died. He was 87.
Mr. Calder died Dec. 21, 2000 in Murfreesboro, Tenn., of natural causes, according to his daughter, Lucille (Bunny) Dolcetti of Darien.
Born in Barre, Vt., Mr. Calder graduated from Greenwich High School in 1931. He went on to study math at Dartmouth College, where he graduated as valedictorian of his class in 1935, Dolcetti said. He continued his education at Columbia University, where he received his graduate degree in guidance counseling and secondary administration.
Mr. Calder taught math and was the athletic instructor at St. John's Military Academy in Ossining, N.Y., before coming to Stamford. At Cloonan Middle School he was a math instructor and guidance counselor, later continuing his counceling career at Stamford High School. At the former Rippowam High School, he served as vice principal.
Although he worked steadily in education, Mr. Calder held other jobs in the city. He worked at Schick Inc. for more than 12 years as a production supervisor and personnel director, then at Stamford Adult Evening Center as a counselor. He also taught math at the Bridgeport Engineering Institute.
Among many community services, he held positions on various boards in the city, including the YMCA, the National Council of Christians and Jews, the Stamford Mental Health Association and the Stamford Kiwanis Club.
Mr. Calder served as president and was named a lifetime member of the Association for Retired Teachers of Connecticut. He also sat on the Stamford Board of Education for two terms in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
It was there that then-school board member Anne McDonald, now a Democratic state representative, noticed his dedication, she said. He helped the city readjust to reducing the number of high schools, when student enrollment had dropped in Stamford and Rippowam High School was closed.
"He was very well liked and was very studious," McDonald said. "He was one of those teachers who . . . did a lot of volunteer work. He was a great mediator. If one of us on the board was having trouble with someone, he would say, 'Now Anne, you have to look at it this way.' He never had a bad thing to say about anyone."
McDonald said she admired him for his dedication to his wife, Lucy Rinaldi Calder, who died in 1995, as well as his dedication to his children and education.
Bunny Dolcetti called her father a "brilliant man," because of his intelligence in math and other studies.
"He had a good life, he did a lot of good in the community," she said.
Mr. Calder moved to Tennessee about three years ago, Dolcetti said.
In addition to his daughter, Mr. Calder is survived by two sons, Dr. James (Jibber) Calder of Murfreesboro and David S. Calder of Southbury; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lacernza Funeral Home at 8 Schyler Ave., Stamford.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Maurice Church, 358 Glenbrook Road. He will be buried at St. John Cemetery
in Darien.
Geraldine Elizabeth Baxter
The Rev. Geraldine Elizabeth Baxter, a longtime Stamford resident, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001 at Stamford Hospital. She was 77.
She died of pneumonia contracted after having a stroke, according to her family.
Born Jan. 6, 1924, in Richmond, Va., she was a daughter of the late Julia and Percy Tinsley.
Mrs. Baxter was a practical nurse at Stamford Hospital for 10 years. She also was a licensed beautician and founder of Modern Coiffeur in Stamford.
Mrs. Baxter was a 20-year member of Union Baptist Church in Stamford, where she served as director of the Foreign Missionary Program and traveled as a missionary to the former Soviet Union, Haiti, Ghana, Liberia and West Africa.
She was a member of the prison ministry in Connecticut and the Connecticut State Missionary Baptist Convention. She also belonged to the Hampton University Ministers Conference in Hampton, Va.
She is survived by a daughter, Donnella Simmons of Ocala, Fla.; two nephews; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
She was predeceased by a sister, Josephine Christian.
Calling hours will be 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001 at Union Baptist Church, 805 Newfield Ave., Stamford.
A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at the church.
Burial will follow in Fairfield Memorial Park in Stamford.
Downer Funeral Home, 31 Stillwater Ave., Stamford, is handling arrangements.
