Andres Martinez
MERIDEN -- Andres Martinez, 32, of Colony Place, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2003, at MidState Medical Center in Meriden with his devoted family by his side.
Andres was born May 4, 1970, in Elgin, Ill., a son to Andres Aviles and Ana Feliciano. Mr. Martinez was a professionally trained chauffeur, working in the Chicago area for some time. His love of the limo business is what made him the best.
In addition to his parent, both of Puerto Rico, he leaves to mourn three sisters, Jerika Beniquez of Puerto Rico, Joanne Aviles and her husband, Sandro Echevarria of Meriden and Wanda Aviles of Puerto Rico; one brother Co Co Aviles of Puerto Rico; two nephews, Ariel and George Soto; and one niece, Taina Echevarria.
Calling hours will take place on Monday, Dec. 2002, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place on Thursday, Dec. 2002, at Municipal Cemetery
in Aguada, P.R. In lieu of flower, the family had asked that donations in Andres memory be made to Joanne Aviles, 47 Spice Hill Drive, Meriden, CT 06451.
Hector O. Rivera
INTERLACHEN, Fla. -- Hector Orlando Rivera, 20, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at Shands Hospital in Gainsville, Fla.
He was born March 4, 1982, in Rio Piedras, P.R., the son of Jose A. and Rhode (Reyes) Rivera. Hector attended E.H. Miller School and was a member of Iglesia Pentecostal de Avivamiento Elohim. Hector was a lovable and happy young adult. He enjoyed playing with bears and church music. Among his achievements, Hector is recognized by an annual award given in his name to students who demonstrated compassion and dedication to others at Nathan Hale Elementary School in Meriden.
Among survivors are his loving parents; a brother, Jose A. Rivera of Interlachen, Fla.; two sisters, Raquel N. and husband Luis E. Maldonado of Interlachen, Fla. and Kimaira Serpa and husband, Roberto Carrero of Meriden; five uncles; six aunts; and several nieces, nephews and cousins, including Amarys and Noemi Maldonado, both of Interlachen, Fla., Yesenia N. Carrero of Meriden, Luis O. and Jose Maldonado, both of Interlachen, Fla. and Robert K. Carrero of Meriden.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday, , Dec. 1 at Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home, 1235 State Road, 20 West, Interlachen, Florida, with the Rev. Pedro Crespo of Iglesia Pentocostal de Avivamiento Elohim, officiating. Burial will follow at Pinelawn Cemetery. Szymasek-Taylor Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Esther R. Stewart
WALLINGFORD -- Esther R. Downing Stewart, 73, beloved wife of Franklin "Buddy" Stewart of Beechwood Drive, Wallingford, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at the MidState Medical Center in Meriden.
Born in Wallingford, Sept. 26, 1929, a daughter of the late William and Natalie Dugay Downing, she had been a lifelong resident. She was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church in Wallingford.
Besides her husband "Buddy", she is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Thomas Oreo of Wolcott; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Dale Stewart of New York, Timothy and Cathy Stewart of Lake Worth, Fla., James and Linda Stewart of Meriden, and Gerard and Karen Stewart of Portland; seven grandchildren; a great-grandson; a sister and brother-in-law, Genevieve and Edward Morris of Wallingford; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Real Downing of Bristol, Robert and Isabelle Downing of Portland, and Joseph and MaryLou Downing of Wallingford; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Emery Downing.
Her family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street, Ext., Wallingford, Monday, from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. from the Wallingford Funeral Home, when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in In Memoriam Cemetery
in Wallingford. In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory may be sent to The American Lung Association, 445 Ash St., East Hartford, CT 06108.
Ruth Warren
WALLINGFORD -- Ruth Eckler Warren, 92, of Cornwell Road, died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, at the Meriden Center. She was the wife of the late William E. Warren.
Born in Newburgh, N.Y. on Jan. 13, 1910, daughter of the late Harold and Agnes Ploss Eckler. She had worked as a telephone operator in New York, then as a saleswomen for the former W.T. Grants Department Stores and the Edward Malley's Company until her retirement.
She leaves a daughter, Barbara Meloling of Wallingford; sons, William E. Warren of Killingworth and Donald C. Warren of Wallingford; sisters Lillian Parkin of Warwick, New York, Lorraine Taylor and Dorothy Force, both of Walden, New York, Essie VanGeli of Homer, New York and Marilyn Zwart of Montgomery, New York; a brother, Heflin Eckler of Walden, New York. Also survived by seven grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a grandson, Glenn Meloling; a sister, Ethel Simmons; and brothers, Harold, Bernard, Melvin and Raymond Eckler.
Funeral services will be conducted in the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Ave., Tuesday morning at a time to be announced. Interment will follow in the North Haven Center Cemetery. The visiting hours will be Monday from 6 to 8 p.m.
Richard G. Ziemba
LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Richard G. Ziemba, 55, died unexpectedly on Thursday, Nov. 28th, in Las Vegas.
Born in Meriden, Feb. 24, 1947, he was the son of the late Walter G. and Agnes (Bogdanski) Ziemba. He resided in Meriden until moving to Las Vegas 22 years ago. He was a graduate of Maloney High School and a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church while in Meriden. Mr. Ziemba was employed by Binion's Horseshoe Hotel and Casino.
He is survived by a sister, Jean (Ziemba) Shibetta of Meriden; and a brother and sister-in-law, Walter and Kathleen Ziemba of Meriden; also several nieces and nephews.
A memorial mass will be held in St. Stanislaus Church at a later date, to be announced in the Record-Journal at the end of the week. Arrangements are under the direction of the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, CT.

Alexandrina Mongillo
SOUTHINGTON -- Alexandrina "Shandra" Mongillo, 86, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at Bradley Memorial Hospital. She was the beloved wife of the late Lincoln C. Mongillo for 58 years.
Born on June 8, 1916, in Martha's Vineyard, Mass., the daughter of the late John and Maria (Paiva) Coutinho, who immigrated to Martha's Vineyard from Madeira Island, Portugal. She moved to Southington in 1934 where she resided for the past 68 years. She was a parishioner of St. Thomas Church and a founding member of the Ladies Guild.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Lincoln and Patricia Mongillo II of Seattle, Wash.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Alexandrina and John Folcik and Dr. Mary Jane and Dr. Michael Williams, all of Southington; a brother, Frank and his wife, Flora Coutinho of Martha's Vineyard, Mass.; six grandchildren, John Folcik, Melissa and her husband, William Whelan, Michael and Meredith Williams, Lincoln Mongillo III and Peter Mongillo; three great-grandchildren, William, Kelsey and Catherine Whelan; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three sisters, Mary Coutinho, Hilda Mongillo and Gloria deBettencourt; and two brothers, Manuel and John Coutinho.
The funeral will be held on Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St. to St. Thomas Church at 10 a.m. for a Mass of Christian burial. Burial will be at St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to St. Aloysius Church Building Fund, for the Religion Education Center 256 Burritt St., Plantsville, CT 06479.
Nelson L. Muniz
MERIDEN -- Nelson L. Muniz, 58, of Pratt Street, was placed in God's hands on Nov. 30, 2002 at Hartford Hospital after a short illness.
Nelson was born July 27, 1944, in Moca, Puerto Rico, a son to the late Aniceto and Saturnina (Hernandez) Muniz. In addition to his wife, Cheryl Muniz, Cheryl Muniz, he has two sons, Nelson Muniz and Nick Muniz, Sr. and his wife, Nithsha; one daughter, Nina Muniz; four brothers, Julio and Raquel Muniz, Pablo and Carmen Muniz, Alex and Eliazer Muniz of Meriden; one sister, Grace and Efrain Rivera; two grandchildren, Nick Jr. and Jaylinn Muniz, all from Meriden; and many nephews and nieces. In addition to his parents, he is also predeceased by a brother, Benjamin Muniz.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, Dec. 3 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be private next to his parents in Walnut Grove Cemetery. The Szymaszek-Taylor Funeral Home, 189 East Main St., Meriden is handling the arrangements.
