Howard E. Thompson
MIDDLETOWN -- Howard Edward Thompson, 86, of Middletown, husband of the late Domenica "Minnie (Vigneri) Thompson, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, in Middletown.
Born on Jan. 18, 1916 in Benton, Ky., he was the son of the late Albert E. and Alice (Hall) Thompson. As a young man he worked with the CCC camps, and later moved to Connecticut. He was employed by New Departure in Meriden, was active with the UAW Labor Union, and retired after 30 years of service. While at New Departure he met and married Minnie. They were married for 53 years. "Howie" was an avid reader, gifted singer, self-taught ukulele player, remarkable storyteller and creative artist. His sensitivity to nature and light came across in his artwork, having won several trophies and ribbons. He was an admired dancer and a member of the St. Sebastian's Minstrelaires Theater group of the 50's. His sense of humor brought laughter to many people, especially at family gatherings. He was a Dixieland jazz fan and actually met some of the "greats." He was a member of Meridian Lodge No. 77, AF & AM Meriden. Howard will be missed by many, especially, relatives, friends and close friends, Bill Burke Sr. and family.
He is survived by his daughter, Alice June Thompson of Edgartown, Mass.; his son, Crandall Thompson and his wife, Deborah of Norwich; grandsons, Travis Thompson and his wife, Shannel Thompson of Sebastopol, Calif., and Bret Thompson of Norwich; brother, Redge Thompson of Adams, Tenn.; sister, Deborah Thompson of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Doolittle Funeral Home, 14 Old Church St., Middletown, (860) 346-6464, Friday, Nov. 15, from 5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the charity of your choice. Graveside services will be held at Middlefield Cemetery, Middlefield on Saturday, Nov. 30, at 10 a.m.
Velma McKee
CHESHIRE -- Velma McKee, 95, of 801 Cook Hill Road, wife of the late David McKee died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002 at home.
She was born on March 11, 1907 in Maine, a daughter of the late Samuel and Essie Clark Morrison. Mrs. McKee was a member of the Olivet Baptist Church in Hamden and active in the Evergreens of the church. In prior years she had been a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse in Moro Plantation, Maine. She also was a Girl Scout Leader.
Mrs. Mckee is survived by two sons, Kenneth McKee of Smyrna Mills, Maine and Brian McKee and his wife, Sherry of Cheshire; a daughter, Darleen Holmes of Meriden; 14 grandchildren, Diane Castro, Susan Tully, Kim Albert, Kathy McKee, Kevin McKee, Rolande Gay, Teresia O'Hala, Robyn LeBlanc, Robert Holmes, Courtney Holmes, Heather McKee and Ashley McKee; 25 great-grandchildren, Peter, Michael, Tina, L.J., Shioban, Tanya, Aimee, Bethany, Melissa, Sharon, Matthew, Mark, Katelyn, Joseph, Sean, Chrissy, Reanna, Richie, Monica, Ronnie, Anthony, Shyan, Erica, Zachary and Sarah; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 10 a.m. at the B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm St., Wallingford. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. Burial will be on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 10 a.m. at the Village Cemetery
in Merrill, Maine. Memorial gifts in her memory may be sent to the charity of ones choice.
Joseph F. Misuk, MD
MERIDEN -- Dr. Joseph F. Misuk, 95, of 111 Hillcrest Terrace, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002 at the MidState Medical Center. He was the husband of Mabel Bennett Misuk to whom he was married for 69 years.
Born July 19, 1907 in Wallingford, he was the son the late Frank and Anna Misiukiewicz. He graduated from Lyman Hall High School, Georgetown University and Georgetown Medical School. He was a solo medical practitioner of Meriden from 1934 until his retirement in 1984. During World War II, Dr. Misuk served as a naval physician in the Pacific Theater.
Besides his wife, Dr. Misuk leaves a son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Linda Bennett of Kingman, Ariz.; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and H. Lee Yeaton of Wallingford; and a granddaughter, Lynn Goodson of Shawnee, Okla.
A military funeral will be held Saturday, Nov. 16, at 10:30 a.m. from the Stempien Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden followed by committal services at Walnut Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
James Morales
WALLINGFORD -- James Morales, 50, of Christian St., Wallingford, died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002 in St. Francis Hospital in Hartford.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Sept. 22, 1952, a son of Frances Molina Morales of Wallingford, and the late Modesto Morales, he was a Wallingford resident for many years. He was a graduate of Lyman Hall High School and had been awarded his BS in Accounting from Quinnipiac University. He had been employed by the Internal Revenue Service, in Hartford, for many years, and was named the Handicapped Employee of the Year in 1979. In 1987 he was recognized by the North Atlantic Region of IRS Appeals as an outstanding employee and was honored at a banquet in Washington , DC. In 1993 he had received recognition by the U.S. Treasury Department as its Outstanding Employee of the Year. He was honored at a banquet in Washington DC which was hosted by Secretary of the Treasury Lloyd Bentsen. He had served as President, Vice President, and Treasurer of the Southern Chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and was a member of Padres Abriendo Puertas. He was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church.
Besides his mother, he is survived by his sister, Nereida Morales of Southington; and several aunts, uncles, cousins; and many dear friends.
His family will receive relatives and friends in The Wallingford Funeral Home , 809 North Main St., Ext., Wallingford, Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. from The Wallingford Funeral Home when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery. Mary Mucci
SOUTHINGTON -- Mary Stanton Mucci, wife of Lawrence J. Mucci and mother of Lawrence S. and Laura S. Mucci died on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002 after a valiant battle with leukemia.
Proud to be a Southington native, Mary attended local schools and graduated from the UConn School of Pharmacy. She worked at community pharmacies in the area for over 30 years, until illness force her retirement. Mary was a life-long member of St. Thomas Church and belonged to its Ladies Guild. She was a Life Member of Friends of Southington Library and Museum and served as treasurer for several years. When Mary's children were younger, she enjoyed volunteering at Hatton School. Her greatest joys were spending time with her family and friends, helping patients with their health needs, cooking, and working out-of-doors.
Mary was the daughter of Lorraine (Nagle) Stanton and the late Robert Stanton; she also leaves a brother, sister-in-law and nephew, Courtney, Carol and Patrick Stanton of Bowdoin, Maine; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Thomas and Elaine Alagna; and a nephew and his wife, Kenneth and Stacy Wilcox, all of Southington; she also leaves two aunts and two uncles, many cousins; and an extended family of friends who brought her much joy and love during her illness.
The funeral will be held on Monday at 9:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington to St. Thomas Church at 10 a.m. for a Mass of Christian burial. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery. Helen K. Cichowski
WALLINGFORD -- Helen Koval Cichowski, 88, of North Cherry St., Wallingford, died Friday, November 15, 2002, at the Connecticut Hospice in Branford. She was the wife of the late Joseph S. Cichowski.
Her family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St., Ext., Wallingford, Wednesday from 8:30 to 10:15 a.m. when the funeral cortege will proceed to SS. Peter and Paul Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Interment will be in the In Memoriam Cemetery

Velma McKee

She was predeceased by two sisters, Vera and Vilda; and a brother, Grover.

Benjamin Reed
WALLINGFORD -- Benjamin R. Reed 76, of 970 Clintonville Road, Wallingford, died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at the Skyview Healthcare Center, Wallingford. He was the husband of Phyllis Scully Reed for 54 years.
Born in West Haven on Jan. 28, 1926. He had worked as an Inspector for Marlin Firearms until his retirement in 1988. He had served in the U.S. Marines during World War II in Iwo Jima.
He was the father of Denton and Duane Reed and Dorryl M. Jespersen; brother of Florence Hodge; also survived by four granddaughters; a grandson; and a great-grandson.
His funeral procession will leave the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Ave., North Haven Monday at 9:30 a.m. A graveside service will be held in Evergreen Cemetery, New Haven with full military honors at 10 a.m. The visiting hours will be on Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
Lydia Slater
SOUTHINGTON -- Lydia "Jane" Slater, 76, of Southington, died peacefully in her home with her beloved husband of 57 years by her side. She fought a courageous battle against cancer until the end.
Lydia was born in New Orleans on March 25, 1926. She met Harold William Slater in Louisiana where he was stationed during World War II. They married on Sept. 11, 1945. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Besides her husband, she leaves behind her oldest daughter, Barbara Slater Carter and her husband, Wesley of Old Orchard Beach, Maine; her daughter, Kathleen Slater Scott and her husband, Robert of Callawassie Island, N.C.; her son, Harold Daniel Slater and his wife, Melissa of Southington; Lydia had five special grandchildren, who loved her dearly, Kimberly Scott Mischik and her husband, George, Robert Austin Scott and his wife, Mandy, all of South Carolina and Elizabeth, Sarah and Daniel Slater of Southington; also her newest addition great-grandson, Robert Austin Scott of South Carolina; Lydia also leaves behind a special brother-in-law, Robert Slater of New Britain. She will be deeply missed by all her family.
The family is respecting her wishes and there will be no calling hours or service. There will be a private family gathering at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, Lydia has requested that any donations be made to the VNA/Hospice of Central Connecticut, P.O. Box 1327, New Britain, CT 06050-1327. Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home, 975 South Main St., Plantsville has charge of arrangements.
Lena Clancy
MERIDEN -- Lena (Polvani) Clancy, 90, formerly of 50 Spring Street, wife of the late Patrick M. Clancy, died on Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at Miller Memorial Community.
Born on Jan. 17, 1912, the daughter of the late Isadoro and Teresa (Pierezzi) Polvani, she resided in Meriden all her life. Mrs. Clancy was educated in Meriden schools and employed by International Silver and the Meriden Board of Education. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, a member of the Meriden Council of Catholic Women, the Holy Name Society, and the Daughters of Isabella. She had worked as a volunteer for the Franciscan Life Center for many years.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Doreen and James Roddy of Meriden; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Patricia Clancy of South Meriden, and Robert and Sheila Clancy of Wallingford; one daughter-in-law, Gloria Clancy; eight grandchildren, Michael Clancy, Brian Clancy, Karen Clancy-Thayer, Tomas Clancy, Lynn Scozzari-Johnson, Robin Scozzari, David Scozzari, Jr., and Christopher Scozzari; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Esther Bartis of Meriden, and Mary Macchietto of Southington; one brother, Fred Polvani of Meriden; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Capt. Patrick J. Clancy of the Meriden Fire Dept.; two sisters, Eleanor Alvaro and Rita Zagorski; and one brother, Charles Polvani.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, and at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m.
