Richard R. Bauchman
MERIDEN -- Richard R. Bauchman, 76, husband of Jean Thuottle Bauchman, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at the Meriden Center after a brief illness.
Born in Waterbury, Sept. 26, 1926, he was the son of the late Frank and Agnes Butler Bauchman. Mr. Bauchman resided in Meriden for most of his life and was employed by Wilhelm-Davis Co. as parts manager for many years. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Navy. Mr. Bauchman was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church.
Besides his wife, Jean, he is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Joseph Bruno of Clinton; and by two nephews, James and Joseph Bruno. He was predeceased by a brother, Frank Bauchman.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend a funeral service on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, at 10 a.m. in the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Meriden Humane Society, 540 Oregon Rd., Meriden, or to the American Diabetes Assoc., 300 Research Pkwy, Meriden, CT 06450.
Mary Lou Maniscalco
MERIDEN -- Mary Lou (Cerrone) Maniscalco, 70, of 359 Gravel St., wife of Joseph C. Maniscalco, died unexpectedly on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at her home.
Born in Meriden, Jan. 1, 1932, she was the daughter of Jennie (Busa) Cerrone of Meriden, and the late Anthony Cerrone. Mrs. Maniscalco was educated in the Meriden Schools, was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, and a former member of the North Italian Club's Ladies Auxiliary.
Besides her husband, Joseph and her mother, Jennie, she is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jo and Rick Merliss of Meriden; two grandchildren, Marisa Jo Merliss and Mark J. Merliss; also by several nieces; nephews; aunts, and uncles. She was predeceased by a brother, Louis Cerrone.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the John J. Ferry and Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 4 until 8 p.m.
Stanley F. Tencza Sr.
WALLINGFORD -- Stanley F. Tencza, Sr., 92, of Wallace Row, beloved husband for 67 years of Bernice M. Pasieka Tencza, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at the Highland Health Care Center in Cheshire.
Born in Wallingford, Aug. 8, 1910, he was a son of the late John and Frances Lenik Tencza, and had been a lifelong resident. Mr. Tencza graduated from Lyman Hall High School in 1928, was a member of the Track Team and had been awarded several medals for running. He had been employed by Allegheny Ludlum Steel Company for over 40 years until his retirement in 1972. A longtime active member of the Polish National Alliance Group No. 513, in Wallingford, he held various leadership positions. A founding member and parishioner of SS. Peter and Paul Church in Wallingford, he had been the parish Sexton for 48 years, a member of the Men's Club of the parish, and the recipient of the Pillar of the Church Award in 2001.
Besides his wife, Bernice, he is survived by his three daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia A. and Robert J. Reig, Dr. Joan Tencza Krall and Dr. Richard Krall, all of Wallingford, Margaret T. and Richard M. Marchesani of Tolland; his son and daughter-in-law, Stanley F. Tencza, Jr. and Patricia Ott Tencza of Newbern, N.C.; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; his sister, Mary Pierzga of Norwalk; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Richard J. Tencza; a sister, Stacia Kowalski; and three brothers, Walter Tencza, Carol Tencza and Andrew Tencza.
His family will received relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main street, Ext., Wallingford, Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, at 9 a.m. from the Wallingford Funeral Home, when the funeral cortege will proceed to SS. Peter and Paul Church where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment will be in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery

Lena Caswell
WALLINGFORD -- Lena Kanengeser Caswell, 98, formerly of Center St., Wallingford, died Sunday, Nov. 03, 2002, at MidState Medical Center in Meriden. She was the wife of the late Hale E. Caswell, Sr.
Born in Wallingford, Dec. 26, 1903, a daughter of the late Jacob and Catherine Gertes Kanengeser, she was a lifelong resident here. A Registered Nurse, she was a 1927 graduate of the Meriden Hospital School of Nursing and had served on the nursing staff of the former Meriden-Wallingford Hospital for many years until her retirement 22 years ago. She was a member of the Meriden-Wallingford Hospital Alumni Association, had been a volunteer for the American Red Cross Blood Mobile program in Wallingford, and was a member of the First Congregational Church of Wallingford.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jan C. and Rosario DiNoia of Wallingford; two sons and daughters-in-law, Hale E. Caswell and Charlotte Caswell of Wallingford and Bruce L. Caswell and Angela Caswell of Montana; seven grandchildren, Carla Boyon, Kurt Caswell, Michele Pizzuto, David DiNoia, Christine Armstrong, Melissa Bronkema and Beth Crowell; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Pauline Ferguson and Catherine Stevens; and a brother, Jacob Kanengeser.

John M. Durand
NORTH HAVEN -- John M. Durand, Quinnipiac Ave., North Haven died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002 at the Yale New Haven Hospital in New Haven.
Born Aug. 16, 1952 in Southbridge, Mass., he was the son of Merton and Louise Rochon Durand.
Besides his parents, he leaves two sons, Justin and Travis Durand, both of Meriden; a brother, James Durand of Shelby, Mich.; and a sister, Lynn Cholewinski of Killingworth.
His funeral will be held Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. from the Stempien Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden followed by a Mass of Christian burial in St. Laurent's Church, 121 Camp St., Meriden. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Family requests that donations in John's memory be made to Harbor Health Services, 14 Sycamore Way, Branford, CT 06405.
Sara E. Kane
MERIDEN -- Sara E. Burkee Kane, 84, of Broad St., Meriden, formerly of Berlin, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at the Miller Memorial Community in Meriden.
Born in McSherrystown, Pa., April 9, 1918, the youngest of 12 children, of the late Francis S. and Rebecca E. Klunk Burkee, she had been a Meriden resident for 12 years before moving to Berlin where she had lived for many years before returning to Meriden.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathlyn K. Veronesi of Kensington; two sons and daughters-in-law, James F. and Angela Kane of West Hartford and John C. and Adrienne Kane, of Palm Bay, Fla.; six grandchildren, Robert Veronesi and his wife, Robin, Carol Veronesi and her husband, Darius Bors, Natalie Kane, Sean Kane, Corbin Kane and Gregory Kane; two great-grandchildren, Michael and Nicole Veronesi; a sister, Gertrude Krumrine of Westminster, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.
Her family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St., Ext., Wallingford, Wednesday, from 8:45 until 10 a.m., when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church, 84 North Colony St., Wallingford, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery

Dudley H. Merriman
SOUTHINGTON -- Dudley H. Merriman, 73, of Trout Brook Road, Cheshire, formerly of Southington, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002 at the Veteran's Hospital in West Haven. He was the husband of 49 years of Charlotte Ashworth Merriman.
Born Aug. 13, 1929 in Southington, son of the late Floyd and Marjorie Lane Merriman, he had been a longtime Southington resident. Mr. Merriman worked as a toolmaker for Emhart Manufacturing in Berlin, retiring after 25 years of employment. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He graduated from Lewis High School, where he played football and had played semi-pro football for the former Southington Gems.
Besides his wife, Charlotte, he is survived by two daughters, Violet Skrzyniarz and her husband, Philip of Cheshire and Faith Merriman, also of Cheshire; six grandchildren, Tara, Marleen, Holly, Todd, Cory and Shawn; and one great-grandson, Christian; he also leaves three brothers and their wives, Floyd and Priscilla Merriman of Schenectady, N.Y., Guy and Lois Merriman of Coventry and Paul and Deana Merriman of Beacon Falls; many devoted and loving sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews; his lifelong friends, John and Terry Gasecki, Joe Sollock and Gladys S. Senger. He was predeceased by his brother, Frank Merriman.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 7, at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Cheshire. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery
in Southington. Calling hours are prior to the service from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home, 975 South Main St., Plantsville.
James A. Smith
PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- James A. Smith, husband of the late Ann Hutchinson, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002 at Benincasa Hospice after a long fight with cancer. Mr. Smith was the father of four sons, the grandfather of 13, the great-grandfather of two young boys and the brother of two surviving sisters.
He met Ann Hutchinson of Pittsford at the Cobbs Hill skating rink when they were 14 years old. She cheered for him when he played left halfback for Aquinas Institute in the early 1940s. They were married in 1944 as he was earning his wings in the U.S. Army Air Corps to pilot B-25s. After World War II, they settled on North Main St., in Pittsford, N.Y., and raised their four sons, James H. Smith, executive editor of the Record-Journal in Meriden, Stephen J. Smith, a physical education teacher in Fairport, N.Y., William S. Smith, owner of Heritage Packaging Co. of Fairport, N.Y., and Andrew Smith, an environmental scientist with Sear-Brown of Rochester, N.Y.; he also leaves his daughters-in-law, Jacqueline Smith, an editor and journalism professor in Connecticut, Cynthia Smith, marketing manager with ACM Lab of Rochester, N.Y., Kris Smith, co-owner of Heritage Packaging and Mary Jo Smith, a children's librarian in Gates, N.Y.
Mr. Smith, born Oct. 19, 1924, was the youngest of the eight children of William and Ella (Murphy) Smith of Rochester, N.Y. He also leaves two sisters, Rita Lansing of Ionia, N.Y., and Dorothy Kinsky of Mendon, N.Y.; and dozens of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Mr. Smith had a long career in advertising and publishing in the Rochester area. He was a marketing executive for Friden Inc. He worked in all facets -- advertising, art, production, distribution and editorial -- with several area weekly newspapers and other publications. He retired 13 years ago. After losing his right eye to cancer, he took art lessons and delighted in his instructor's comment that he has a "a good eye." Despite his disability, he kept up his golf game with old Aquinas classmates, new friends in Mendon, and family who marveled at his long drives and skill with a putter.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Anthony Funeral Chapel Inc., 2305 Monroe Ave., Rochester, N.Y., followed by burial in Pittsford Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Benincasa, 3880 Rush-Mendon Road, Mendon, N.Y. 14506.
Wilbur W. Squire
SEATTLE, Wash. -- Wilbur Welles Squire, a retired civil engineer, civic volunteer and lifelong mountaineer, died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002 after a brief illness in Seattle, Washington . He was 86 years old.
Mr. Squire was born in Meriden on Dec. 7, 1915, the oldest son of Robert Allan Squire and Margaret Welles Squire. He was educated in Meriden Public Schools and graduated from The Choate School in Wallingford, and Princeton University. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II. Mr. Squire was an avid mountaineer, together with his wife of 53 years, Jeannette "Timmie" Squire. They met in 1949 hiking in the Wasatch Mountains in Utah, and were married that same year. They raised two children to be wilderness enthusiasts: Judith Carolyn Sears of Thomas, Okla., and Robert W. W. Squire of Boston, Mass. Mr. Squire was a member of the Sierra Club, the Colorado Mountain Club, the Appalachain Mountain Club, and the Retired Rovers of The Mountaineers in Seattle, Wash. Even in his eighties he hiked in the Cascade Mountains with his wife and friends. He was active as a civil engineer for more than 30 years, having earned an engineering degree from the University of Colorado in Boulder. His engineering work mostly concerned rail transportation, first working for the Denver, Rio Grande & Western Railroad in Utah, Nev., and California. He also did engineering consulting for firms in Boise, Idaho, New York and San Francisco and for subway construction projects in Toronto and Washington , DC. Mr. Squire was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Seattle and was Kiwanian of the Year in 1987. As a civic volunteer, he worked his own special magic with elderly and homeless people in the Seattle area and tutored children in academic subjects. He was most recently active with the First Avenue Service Center in Seattle. Those with whom he lived, and those with whom he worked and served with kindness will surely miss him.
In addition to his immediate family, Mr. Squire is survived by a granddaughter, Katherine McGregor Squire of West Falmouth, Mass.; and his brother and sister, Robert Wolcott Squire Sr. and Dorothy Squire Church, both of Meriden; and by cousins, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at the Plymouth Congregational Church in Seattle on Friday Nov. 8, at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers Mr. Squire wished that contributions be sent to Plymouth Congregational Church, 1217 Sixth Ave., Seattle Wash., 98101.
