Frank E. Zajac
MERIDEN -- Frank E. Zajac, 84, of 23 Akron St., died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2002 at CT Hospice in Branford.
Born in Meriden on Sept. 27, 1918, the son of the late Joseph and Katherine Brys Zajac, he had resided in Meriden all his life and graduated from Meriden High School. Mr. Zajac was employed by International Silver Company for 42 years, retiring in 1980. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Navy. He was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church and a member of the Knights of the Blessed Virgin.
He is survived by five brothers and sisters-in-law, Henry and Helen Zajac, Benjamin and Mary Zajac, Ted and Mary Zajac, all of Meriden, Alfred and Rosemary Zajac of Wallingford and Edward and Patricia Zajac of Meriden; also several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Emily Zajac and Helen Gaj; and three brothers, Stanley Zajac, Walter Zajac and Charles Zajac.
The funeral will be held on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 9:30 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, and at 10 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church. Burial with military honors will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to CT Hospice Inc., 100 Double Beach Road, Branford, CT 06405.
Clifford I. Erland
WALLINGFORD -- Clifford I. Erland of 22 Masonic Ave., formerly of Garvin Road, Hamden, husband of Ruth MacBride Erlandin passed away Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002.
Born in Port Jefferson, N.Y., June 4, 1923, a son of the late Charles and Elsie Smith Erland. Mr. Erland retired as a Postman for the U.S. Postal Service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of New Haven, a Past Master of Day Spring Lodge No. 30, AF & AM, The Scottish Rite - Valley of New Haven, Lafayette Consistory, a Past Patron of Alice Chapter No. 76, O.E.S. and the National Association of Letter Carriers. Cliff served as a coach with the Hamden Father's Baseball Association for over 30 years.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter and her husband, Kathleen and Dennis Cowhig of Warrington, Pa.; a son and his wife, Kenneth and Katherine Heyse Erland of Wallingford; three brothers, Walter, Calvin and Albert Erland of Cobleskill, N.Y.; and three grandchildren, Rose Cowhig, Kyle and Ryan Erland. He was predeceased by his first wife, Rosemary Cramer Erland; a son, Keith Erland; three brothers, Charles, Arthur and Lloyd Erland.
Funeral service will be held at Beecher and Bennett, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden, Saturday, Oct. 19, at 10 a.m. Friends may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. A Masonic service by Day Spring Lodge No. 30, AF & AM at 7 p.m.. After the burial in Centerville Cemetery

Frederick G. Link
MERIDEN -- Frederick G. Link, 62, of McKenzie Ave., died on Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, at Hartford Hospital.
Born in Meriden, Aug. 30, 1940, he was the son of the late Elton and Margaret (McMahon) Link. He had resided in Meriden all of his life, attended Wilcox Technical High School, and owned and operated a contracting business until an accident 27 years ago. Mr. Link served during the Vietnam War with the U.S. Marine Corps., was a former member of Holy Angels Church, and a member of the Meriden Senior Citizens.
He is survived by two sisters, Sharon Cioffi of South Meriden and her friend, Edward Ohr of Wallingford, Janice and Richard Cotrona of Berlin; one brother, Thomas Link of Meriden; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend a memorial service to be held on Saturday, Oct. 9, at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Cemetery, where he will be interred with his mother. There will be no calling hours. Military honors will be accorded by a composite unit of the Meriden Antique Veterans. Arrangements are under the direction of the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden.
Fayetta McKown
OLD SAYBROOK -- Fayetta Crowley McKown, 79, of Old Saybrook, a retired schoolteacher, died on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002 in CT Hospice in Branford. The cause was thyroid cancer, according to her niece, Katherine McLennan of Old Greenwich.
Miss McKown was born on March 3, 1923 in Detroit, Mich., the daughter of the late Jacob Halsey McKown and Catherine Crowley McKown. She was educated at the Madeira School in McLean, Va., received a bachelor's degree from Vassar College and a master's from Yale, where she did further postgraduate work. She taught English at private schools, including for most of her teaching career, at Rosemary Hall School first in Greenwich, then after Rosemary merged with the Choate School in Wallingford. She retired from there in 1989. She was renowned as a caring and insightful teacher of literature with wide-ranging tastes. Her favorite authors included, but were not limited to, Shakespeare, Henry James, Wallace Stevens, Virginia Woolf and Ralph Ellison.
She is survived by her niece, Mrs. McLennan; her sister, Elizabeth M. McCarthy of Wilmington, N.C.; her nephew, James McCarthy of Green Bay, Wis.; and several great-nieces.

Quentin Odell
WALLINGFORD -- Quentin "Bob" Odell, 78, of Masonic Ave., Wallingford, formerly of Crown St., Meriden, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002 at the Masonic Healthcare Center in Wallingford. He was the husband of the late Grace Scherpf Odell.
Born in New York City, N.Y., Oct. 29, 1923, he was a son of the late William and Dorothy Ebdon Odell, and had been a Meriden-Wallingford area resident for many years. He was the proprietor of Custom Painting of Meriden for many years. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Yalesville, a member Masonic Compass Lodge No. 9 AF & AM of Wallingford and the Sphynx Temple Directors Staff in Newington. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Paul Kennedy of North Easton, Mass.; his two sons and daughters-in-law, Kim and Marianne Odell of Higganum and Glenn and Judith Odell of Yalesville; his six grandchildren, Paige Smith, Jennifer Odell, Brooke Odell, Kurt Odell and Sean Kennedy; three great-grandchildren, Taylor Smith, Connor Smith and Jamison Odell; his brother, William Odell of Tampa, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
His family will receive relatives and friends in the Masonic Home Chapel, Masonic Ave., Wallingford, Friday from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel. Interment with military honors will be in the Masonic Home Cemetery

Albert Sasso
HAMDEN -- Albert Sasso, 80 of 44 Huntington Circle, Hamden, beloved husband for 54 years of Irene Mezei Sasso, entered into rest eternal Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002.
Son of the late Frank and Mary Rubano Sasso, a longtime member of Local 1 of the Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Union, he was proud of the many buildings in the region he worked on. He was a World War II Navy veteran, serving in the South Pacific.
He was the devoted father and father-in-law of Barbara LaPaglia and Laraine Sasso, both of Wallingford and Robert and Kathleen Sasso of East Lyme; brother of Concetta Sasso of New Haven, Raymond Sasso of Fort Pierce, Fla., Frank Sasso of Hamden and the late Armand Sasso; he also leaves five grandchildren.
Funeral will be held in Hamden Memorial, 1300 Dixwell Ave., Saturday at 8:15 a.m. A Mass at 9 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Hamden. Friends may call at the funeral home, Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. Burial in St. John's Cemetery, Wallingford. Leslie N. Barton Jr.
BERLIN -- Leslie N. Barton Jr., 78 of 22 Honeysuckle Court, Berlin and former Middletown resident, husband of Betty (Hoefler) Barton passed away Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002 at New Britain General Hospital.
Born in Hartford, he was the son of the late Leslie N. and Ruth (Johnson) Barton. Mr. Barton had lived in Middletown most of his life, moving to Berlin four years ago. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving aboard the U.S.S. Langley Aircraft Carrier. He was a member of the First Church of Christ, Congregational in Middletown, where he was a deacon and member of the men's fraternity. He was a member of VFW Post No. 583, Middletown.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Leslie E. Barton of Taunton, Mass.; one daughter, Sharon J. Robinson and her husband, Richard of Bainbridge, Ga.; one brother, Ronald Barton of Wallingford; and two grandchildren, Becky J. Robinson and Richie L. Robinson. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Tammy Robinson.
Funeral services will be held at the First Church of Christ, Congregational, Middletown, Monday, Oct. 21, at 11 a.m. The Rev. John Hall and The Rev. Sandra Olsen, will officiate and interment will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park, Rocky Hill. Albert G. Christy
COLUMBIA -- Albert G. Christy, 89, of Columbia, formerly of Meriden, husband of the late Margaret E. (Lingerfeldt) Christy and father of the late Albert G. Christy Jr., died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002 at an area convalescent home.
He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., Jan. 30, 1913, son of the late Albert G. and Blanche (Lynn) Christy and had resided for most of his life in Columbia and Meriden. He was a graduate of Penn State University, College Station, Pa., where he studied forestry, and remained an avid outdoorsman all his life. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a recipient of the Purple Heart and three Bronze Service Stars. Prior to his retirement in 1978 he was a facilities designer in the Wilgoos Lab at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, East Hartford. He was a communicant of St. Columba Church, and a member of the American Legion Post No. 19, Willimantic.
Mr. Christy is survived by two sons, Arthur L. Christy of Meriden and Daniel L. Christy and his wife, Susan of Copper Canyon, Texas ; a daughter, M. Florence Schenk and her husband, Dale of East Hartford; a sister, Hilda Snyder of Tavernier, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Austin Schenk of Cleveland, Ohio and Erica Schenk of Greenwich. Besides his wife, son and parents, he was predeceased by two brothers; and a sister.
A Mass of Christian burial will be Monday, Oct. 21 at 10 a.m. at St. Columba Church, Corner of Route's 66 & 87, Columbia. Burial with military honors will be in West Street Burying Ground, Columbia. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association, 443 Franklin Ave., Hartford, CT 06114 or a charity of the donors choice. Marlene D. Healy
COLCHESTER -- Marlene Denise Healy, 30 of Lynn St., beloved wife of Brenden, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002.
Born Nov. 17, 1971 in New Haven, she was a daughter of Mary Marlene (Jenkins) Green of Decatur, Ga., and the late James Edward Green. On June 12, 1999, she wed Brenden Michael Healy in Wallingford. She was forever devoted to her family and will be greatly missed.
In addition to her mother and her loving husband, she is survived by three sons, Joshua Ryan, Elijah James and Samuel Thomas Healy, all at home; her maternal grandmother, Ruth Jenkins of New Haven; a sister, Kelly and brother-in-law, Randall Kahn of Arlington, Va.; her half sisters and brothers, Dawn, Jerri, Timothy and Syhugo Green, Trent Ingram and James Humphrey; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Sue and Thomas Healy of East Haddam; sister-in-law, Shannon Healy of Middletown; and her brothers-in-law, Shawn Healy of Allston, Mass., and Brian Healy of East Haddam; and numerous extended family members and friends.
Friends may call Saturday from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home, 167 Old Hartford Road, Colchester. A chapel service will follow at 4:30 p.m. Private burial will be held in the Linwood Cemetery, Colchester at the convenience of the family.
