SMITH, Jared Lewis
Jared Lewis Smith of Windsor, departed this life on Monday (April 17, 2000) at Hartford Hospital. The union of Lewis and Elaine Smith brought forth two sons Jared and Justin Smith and a brother Lance Hill of Springfield, MA. Jared was a member of True Vine Missionary Baptist Church of New Britain, and later a member of Christ Church of Deliverance. Jared attended Sage Park Elementary School of Windsor and graduated from Windsor High School. He was employed at Computer Hi Tech in South Windsor, and attended Manchester Community College. Jared loved music and was planning to go to a Music Production School in New York in September. Jared also loved basketball and he would be found with numerous kids from the neighborhood playing basketball and showing younger kids how to play on their basketball court in his back yard. He had a deep love for little kids. He loved spending time with his dog K.B. Besides his parents and his brothers he leaves to cherish his memories his grandmother Eleanor Worthy of Toms River, NJ; grandparents Ruther Lee and Lewis Smith of Fitzgerald, GA; five aunts; five uncles; a nephew; a host of cousins, family members and friends. Funeral services will be Monday, April 24, 12 noon with calling hour 11 a.m. at Bethel AME Church, 1154 Blue Hills Avenue, Bloomfield. Burial will be in Mountainview Cemetery, Bloomfield. TURGEON, Henry D.
Henry D. Turgeon, 93, of Newington the husband of Priscilla L. (Blanchette) Turgeon died Wednesday (January 19, 2000). He was born July 29, 1906 in Danville, Quebec Canada. Henry was a self employed painter until his retirement in 1963. Including Priscilla his wife of 70 years he is survived by two sons Norman Turgeon of Rocky Hill and Daniel and his wife Barbara Turgeon of Glastonbury; a daughter Doris R. Spain of Newington; two beloved sisters Alice and Antoinette Turgeon both of Ingraham Manor Nursing Home in Bristol; eighteen grandchildren Len, Cheryl, Linda, Laura, Roger, Viola, Chris, Jerry, Mark, Nancy, Karen, Pat, Janine, Dan, Kim, Mike, Bob, Darcy and their spouses; twenty-seven great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will leave 11:30 a.m., Sat. Jan. 22, 2000 from Rose Hill Funeral Home, 580 Elm St., Rocky Hill followed by a Mass of Christian Burial 12 p.m. at St James R.C. Church, Rocky Hill. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park. Calling hours are TODAY 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Donations in his memory may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
BRANCIFORT, Edith O. (Kreiger)
Edith 0. (Kreiger) Brancifort, 79, of New Britain and Boynton Beach, FL, widow of Alfred L. Brancifort, Sr., and former owner with her husband of Brancifort The Florist, died unexpectedly on Sunday (May 28, 2000). Born in New Britain, daughter of the late Gustav and Augusta (Bayer) Kreiger, she was a life-long New Britain resident. She, along with her husband, owned and operated Brancifort The Florist in New Britain since 1947, before retiring in 1979. She was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, the Ladies Aid and Ladies Altar Guild of the church; Schutzen Park Society, and the Senior Citizen Centers in Kensington, Rocky Hill, and Boynton Beach, FL. In Boynton Beach, she was also active in the New England Club, Pennsylvania Club, New York Club, Michigan Club, and Connecticut Club. She was an avid bingo player. Surviving are five children and their spouses, Alfred and Donna Brancifort of Canton, OH, Richard and Rosemary Brancifort of West Hartford, Judy and Richard Giammarco of Cheshire, Jane and Andrew Clavette of Kensington, and Roy and Janet Brancifort of Kensington; eleven grandchildren, Alfred L. Brancifort, III, Jennifer Bourdon, Amy Tracy, Jason and Jessica Brancifort, Thomas and Lori Brasile, Shellyann Clavette Buckwell, and Michael and Tricia Clavette; seven great-grandchildren, Megan, Nichole, Anthony, Tia, Kelsea, Thomas III, and Caitlan. She is also survived by two sisters, Gertrude Knopf of Bristol and Margaret Roman of West Palm Beach, FL; and by many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 9 a.m. at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, 87 Franklin Sq., New Britain. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday evening from 6-9 p.m. at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home, 411 South Main St., New Britain.
TUCKER, Elizabeth Arm (Cushman-Osborne)
Elizabeth Arm (Cushman-Osborne) Tucker, 93, of Manchester and formerly of Bolton, wife of the late Courtney C. Tucker Sr., died Monday (March 13, 2000) at an area convalescent home. She was born April 7, 1906 in Lynn, MA. and was the daughter of the late Michael and Elizabeth (Budzak) Cushman. Mrs. Tucker had been a resident of Bolton for over forty years before moving to Manchester in 1993. Betty was a member of St. Maurice Church in Bolton, where she was involved with many church activities. One of her favorites was growing and arranging flowers to decorate the alter. She also had been a member of the Bolton Senior Citizens and the Bolton Womans Fire Auxiliary. She is survived by her daughter-in-law Virginia Covell Osborne of Andover; her granddaughter, Cheryl St. Pierre and her husband Russell; three great grandchildren, Michael, Lauren and Leah all of Bolton; a grandson Richard A. Osborne and a great granddaughter Jessica both of Andover. There are also many nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. Other survivors include her stepson Russell Tucker of California; five step-grandchildren and many step-great grandchildren. Mrs. Tucker was predeceased by her son Richard C. Osborne of Andover, her stepson, Courtney C. Tucker Jr. of East Hartford and four brothers and five sisters. Funeral services will be held Friday March 17, at 10 a.m. at the Watkins Funeral Home, 142 East Center St, Manchester. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St Maurice Church 32 Hebron Rd, Bolton. Burial will be in the Bolton Center Cemetery. HIMELSTEIN, Mead J.
Mead Jeffrey Himelstein, 32, of Bellevue, WA, died on Tuesday, (Decem- ber 28, 1999) at Virginia Mason Hospital, Seattle, WA, after a long, courageous battle with leukemia. He was the beloved son of Beverly Gerson Himelstein of Bloomfield and Samuel C. Himelstein, M.D. of Whispering Pines, NC. He was the loving husband of Letisha "Tish" Kinsey Himelstein; and the adoring father of Victoria "Tori" Rose, five ½, and Anna Ellyse, two, all of Bellevue, WA. Born June 11, 1967 in Chicago, IL, he moved to Bloomfield at the age of two. He attended Metacomet School and Bloomfield Middle School. He graduated from St. Andrews School in Boca Raton, FL, and from The University of Colorado with an Electrical Engineering Degree. He worked as a Software Design engineer for the Microsoft Corporation in Redmond, WA. Besides his parents, wife, and daughters, he leaves his loving brother and best friend, Bradley Jay Himelstein, also of Bellevue, WA; as well as his maternal grandparents, Betty and Max Gerson of Long Beach, NY; and his paternal grandmother, Sylvia Segner of West Palm Beach, FL. His hobbies included organic gardening, which he wrote about in an electronic journal; and wine making. Up until the time of his death, he had been pursuing his dream of constructing a log cabin in the mountains near Okanogan, WA. Funeral services were held on Monday, January 3, 2000 in Kennett Square, PA. He was buried in Union Hill Cemetery
in Kennett Square, PA, near his wife's family home. A memorial service will be held later this month at Congregation Emmaus in Bellevue, WA. SMITH, Eugene
Eugene Smith, 74, of Rocky Hill, died Sunday, (April 9, 2000) at Hartford Hospital. He was born in Vanceboro, ME, son of the late Frank and Julia (Dixon) Smith and had lived in Hartford for over 50 years before moving to Rocky Hill. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Smith worked in the Construction Industry. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. He is survived by his brother, Frank A. Smith of East Hartford; several nieces and nephews, Linda Taylor, Teresa Michaud, Willa Hart, Diane King, Beverly Gesualdi, Arlene, Dale, Frank Jr., William, David, Paul, Kenny, Jeannie, Donna, Dottie, Brenda, and Carl Smith, Julie, Denise, Mark and Richard Glue, and Peter Poulin, all of Connecticut; Bobby Dyer and Otie, Jr. of Lambert Lake, ME; and Theresa Monk and Eleanor Dyer of Vanceboro, ME; and several great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a niece, Jean Anne Poulin. The funeral will be Wednesday, April, 12, 8 p.m. at The Dillon-Baxter Funeral Home, 1276 Berlin Tpke., Wethersfield, with Rev. Richard Nason officiating. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. Friends may call Wednesday, 6-8 p.m., prior to the service, at the funeral home.
LINK, Frank J.
Frank J. Link, 96, beloved husband of the late Veronica (Schwegler) died Tuesday, (May 23, 2000) at his residence at the McAuley, West Hartford. He is survived by his daughter, Margaret of West Hartford; son, Henry of Hartford; and several nieces and nephews. Born in Germany, in 1903, he worked for the German aircraft manufacturer Dornier after World War I at its plants in Italy, Holland, and Switzerland. After two years in Italy, he was sent to Holland to resolve an aircraft problem involving a Royal Dutch Navy contract. He was subsequently honored by the Dutch Navy for the device that he invented. His next assignment for Dornier took him to Switzerland, where at the age of 25 he became an aircraft production foreman in charge of building the DOX seaplane's huge wings. He emigrated to the United States in 1929, and came to the Hartford area in 1935. He worked for Stanadyne Corp., Windsor, and its Diesel pump inventor, Vernon Roosa, for about 40 years. During that time he helped develop many of Vernon Roosa's patented ideas into prototypes and was also instrumental in helping to put these devices into production. He had a great love of the mountains and was an avid climber in the U.S. and the Swiss Alps until the age of 85. Funeral mass will be held at St. Lawrence O'Toole Church, 494 New Britain Avenue, Hartford, on Saturday, May 27, at 8:45 a.m. Calling hours will be Friday, May 26, from 6-8 p.m. at Rose Hill Funeral Home, 580 Elm St., Rocky Hill. EDGERTON, Katherine M.
Katherine M. Edgerton, 90, of East Mountain Road, Canton died Tuesday, (October 3, 2000) at Avon Health Center in Avon. She was born September 5, 1910 in Avon, daughter of the late Leon and Margaret (O'Connor) Edgerton and had lived in Avon prior to moving to Canton 25 years ago. She was a graduate of Hartford Secretarial School. Miss Edgerton was employed in a clerical position at CBIA in Hartford for over 40 years prior to her retirement in 1970. She was a member of the Avon Grange and an avid Red Sox Fan. She is survived by a sister, Emerett Johnson of Canton; a nephew, Ralph Johnson and his wife, Joan of Canton; a niece, Marie Ackley of Canton; two great nephews; two great nieces; three great-great nephews; and two great-great nieces. There are no calling hours. Burial will be at convenience of the family. Vincent Funeral Home, 120 Albany Turnpike, Canton has charge of arrangements. EVANS, Marcobria Niamika, Infant
(Baby Girl) Marcobria "Blessing" Niamika Evans of Hartford, beloved daughter of Tyra Matrice Pinnock and Marco Marquez Evans. She was born and departed this life Tuesday (September 26, 2000) at Hartford Hospital. Besides her parents she is survived by her sister, Tajaney Leon Pinnock; and a host of other relatives. Funeral Friday, with visitation 6-6:30 p.m. and a Prayer Service at 6:30 p.m. at the Gennaro J. Capobianco-Greater Harford Funeral Home, 247 Washington Street, Hartford.
DUNCAN, William Woodie
Willliam Woodie Duncan, of Rocky Hill, died Monday, (April 10, 2000) at West Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, almost one year after the passing of his beloved wife, Effie May (Hildenbrandt) Duncan. He was born March 8, 1919 in Nace, VA, to the late William R. and Lillie (Aliff) Duncan. He was predeceased by his brothers, Lee, James, Clarence and Maurice; and by his sisters, Pearl Montgomery and Beulah Anderson. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Sandra Duncan, Bruce Duncan, and Stephen and Lynne Duncan; by his grandchildren, Sian Wintle and her husband Rich, Adam Duncan, and Caia Duncan; by several devoted nieces and nephews; and by many friends. He was a World War II U.S. Army Veteran and survivor of the Bataan Death March and was held about 34 months as a Japanese prisoner-of-war, before being rescued by the U.S. 6th Rangers on January 30, 1945. His internment left him legally blind. Never the less, he earned a BA from Wesleyan University and a MEd from the University of Hartford. He worked for the Connecticut State Board of Education and Rehabilitation Services for the Blind, retiring in 1975 as chief of Rehabilitation Services. He was a member of the National Rehabilitation Association and a member of its New England Region Board of Directors; a member and sometimes board member of the Connecticut Braille Association; and a member of the American Association Workers for the Blind and on its New England Chapter Board. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Blinded Veterans Association and the American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor. The Duncan family thanks the staff at West Hill and at Hartford Hospital for the care shown to our dear father. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 15, 10 a.m. in Trinity Episcopal Church, 300 Main Street, Wethersfield. Burns, Brendan A., Jr.
Brendan A. Burns, Jr., 78, died Wednesday (April 5, 2000) at Avon Health Center. Born in New York City, NY, he was a 1942 graduate of the College of William and Mary. From 1942-1946 he served as a company commander in the tank corps of U.S. Army, fighting from the Battle of the Bulge to the end of the war in Europe. In 1946 he married Barbara Bevan of Larchmont, NY, and was a deeply devoted husband to his wife, who died in 1987 after a long illness. After working for Pan American Airways and the Bank of the Manhattan he joined the Central Intelligence Agency in 1952. In 1974 he retired after extensive service as an intelligence officer in Latin America. He retired to Savannah, GA, where he was a member of Saint Peter the Apostle RC Church. In 1996 declining health led to his move to Connecticut to be near his son. Kind and caring staff members at the Gables in Farmington, Brighton Gardens in West Hartford and the Avon Health Center all knew him as a gentleman of the old school. He was loved by his family as a deeply caring and considerate person. He is survived by his son, Brendan A. Burns III, of Avon; and his granddaughter, Andrea Bevan Burns, of Sacramento, CA. Burial services will be in Savannah, GA.
MERSON, Peter R.
Peter R. Merson, 70, of Rockville, died Tuesday (May 23, 2000) at home. Born in South Boston, MA, he was the son of the late Walter and Helen (Zukoskey) Merson Masewicz, he lived in Rockville most of his life. He was a graduate of the New Hampshire School of Technology, a member of the Italian American Friendship Club of Vernon, the Moose Lodge, the Vernon Senior Citizens and a communicant of St. Joseph Church. Peter had owned and operated the Merson Insurance Agency of Vernon for ten years, retiring in 1992. He leaves his life companion of 30 years, Sandra Ransom of Rockville; his daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Patrick Sweeney of Vernon; his son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Marie Merson of East Hartford; two brothers, Richard Merson of Natick, MA, and Donald Merson of Ashland, MA; his daughter-in-law, Christine Ransom; and his ten grandchildren, Samantha, Casey, Michael, Casey M., Rebecca, Ricky, Brianna, Brittany, David and Ann; two great grandchildren, Kayla and Austin. He was predeceased by his son, Gregory Ransom. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 26, at 9:15 a.m. at the Ladd-Turkington Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Rd. (Rte. 83) Vernon, with a Mass of Christian Burial at St Joseph's Church, corner of West and Union Streets, Rockville, at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Bridget's Cemetery, Manchester. DALEY, Laura (Sylvestre)
Laura (Sylvestre) Daley, 30, of Manchester, beloved wife of Thomas Daley, died Saturday, (March 18, 2000), after a two year courageous battle with brain cancer, with her family by her side. Laura was born in Hartford on Feb. 18, 1970, the daughter of Michael and Denise (Hodder) Sylvestre. She grew up in East Hartford, attending the East Hartford Public Schools. On October 27, 1989, she married Thomas Daley, and the couple settled in Manchester, where they had three children, Kirstie Jenna, Morgan Elizabeth, and Nathan Michael. Until recently, she was employed in Manchester as a medical assistant for Dr. Bruce Stein. Laura was a member of South Congregational Church, East Hartford. She is also survived by her grandmother, Joan Hodder, of East Hartford; two uncles, James Hodder of East Hartford, Dave and his wife, Carol Huppe, of Maine; two aunts, Donna and her husband, John Lavado of Glastonbury, Diane Gompper of East Hartford; father-in-law, Richard, and his wife, Eileen Daley, of Florida; mother-in-law, Claire Daley of East Hartford; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Clarence and Heather Daley-Bodiford of California; four cousins, Robert and Renee Gompper of East Hartford, Christopher and Danica Huppe of Maine. Her life, care and passing were made easier by a dear friend, Julie Romanowski, of West Chester. Laura's grandfather, Robert Hodder; and grandmother, Pauline Huppe, predeceased her. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 21, 11 a.m., in South Congregational Church, 1301 Forbes Street, East Hartford. Pastor Albert P. Turner, Jr., officiating.
