Mae Petrucelli
MIDDLETOWN -- Mae Petrucelli, 91, wife of the late Michael Petrucelli, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at Wadsworth Glen in Middletown.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, on Sept. 1, 1911, she had resided in the Meriden/Middletown area most of her life. Mrs. Petrucelli was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Meriden.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Frances Petrucelli of Durham; three grandchildren, Lisa, Tracy, and Michael R. Petrucelli; one great-granddaughter, Lily; a sister, Edith Calabrese of Wallingford; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Marnette.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Meriden, with Rev. Joseph DiSciacca officiating. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden.
Ross C. Pye
CHESHIRE -- Ross C. Pye, 100, of Elim Park, Cook Hill Rd., died Sept. 26, 2002. He was the husband of the late Arline Cook Pye.
Born in Sherbrooke, Nova Scotia, a son of the late Charles and Jean Gillatti Pye. Mr. Pye was a stamper of the former International Silver Co. of Meriden and was a member of the former Main Street Baptist Church. During World War II, he served in Europe from 1942 to 1945 in the Infantry.
He is survived by a brother, Cedric Pye of Florida. He was predeceased by one sister; and six brothers.
A memorial service will be held at the Elim Park Health Center, Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at 2:30 p.m. Arrangements are with Beecher & Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden.
Charles Czerwinski
SOUTHINGTON -- Charles "Charlie" Czerwinski, 47, of Summer St., in the Plantsville section of Southington, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at Hartford Hospital following injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was the husband of Anne Slodzinski Czerwinski.
Born in Plainville, Aug. 27, 1955, son of Charles and Victoria Calatayud Czerwinski, he had been a lifetime Plainville resident before moving to Southington four years ago. Charlie worked as an assistant manager at Walmart of Naugatuck and was an avid fan of Nascar and of Dirt Motor Sports. He loved to play pool and loved football.
Besides his wife, Anne and his parents, Charles and Victoria, he is survived by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Edward and Barbara Slodzinski of Southington; his brother-in-law, Edward Slodzinski and his wife, Helayne of Plantsville; his sister-in-law, Elaine Gollnick and her husband, Richard of Plantsville; and two nieces and two nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at 10 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in South End Cemetery. Calling hours are on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home, 975 S. Main St., Plantsville. In lieu of flowers, donations in Charlie's memory may be made to the Bruce Slodzinski Scholarship Fund, c/o Lynn Slodzinski, 351 Marion Ave., Plantsville, CT 06479.
Jason A. Gelinas
MERIDEN -- Jason Adam Gelinas, 15, of Yale Avenue, died early Sunday morning, Sept. 29, 2002, at Yale-New Haven Hospital, from injuries sustained as a pedestrian in a motor vehicle accident in Durham. He was the beloved son of Francine Knox Gelinas Kolodziej and Mark S. Gelinas, both of Meriden.
His family will receive relatives and friends at the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St., Ext., Wallingford, Wednesday from 4 until 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday from the Wallingford Funeral Home at 9 a.m., when the funeral cortege will proceed to St. Joseph Church, West Main St., Meriden, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be sent to the Boy Scouts of American, Troop No. 43, c/o St. John Lutheran Church, 520 Paddock Avenue, Meriden, CT 06450 or the Jason A. Robert J. Riotte
WALLINGFORD -- Robert J. Riotte, 77, a long time resident of New Rochelle, N.Y., a former resident of High St., Wallingford, died with his family by his side on Monday, Sept. 30, 2002 at Calvary Hospital in Bronx, N.Y.
Bob was born in New Haven on April 9, 1925, the oldest son of the late Joseph and Anna Griffin Riotte, he grew up in Wallingford. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and served as a radioman. He participated in "Operation Dragoon" and served overseas aboard the USS Andromeda and the USS Oberon. He was honorably discharged and attended the University of Connecticut. After graduation from Uconn, Bob began employment with Liberty Mutual Insurance Company where he worked in various offices in Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York. He also worked for many years for the U.S. Post Office in Mount Vernon, N.Y.
He leaves to mourn his devoted wife of 43 years, Martha Miniter Riotte; and his beloved children, Peggy and John Riotte and Ann and her husband, Michael Avesato. Bob was a loving grandfather to Danielle and Andrew Riotte and Grayson Avesato; he is also survived his sister, Anna Mae and her husband, Larry Mezzapelle; his brother, Eugene and his wife, Barbara Riotte; his sister-in-law, Mitzie Riotte; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, Bob was predeceased by his brothers, Raymond and Gerald "Chirp" Riotte.
Bob was a member of the Holy Name of Jesus Church in New Rochelle, the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. Bob was a good man. He loved his family and we always came first in his heart. Bob enjoyed reading newspapers and even on vacation, the first thing he did was to buy the local paper. He enjoyed old movies and music. He especially enjoyed the Big Band sounds of Glen Miller, Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman. Recently, he came to appreciate the rhythms and musicianship of Latin and Salsa music. Bob enjoyed time with his family and friends in Rhode Island. In retirement he, his wife Martha and their family and friends enjoyed cruises to Bermuda and the Caribbean.
Family and friends may call at the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street, Ext., Wallingford, Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. from the Wallingford Funeral Home, when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Interment with military honors will be in St. John Cemetery
in Wallingford. Gifts in his memory may be sent to Calvary Hospital, 1740 Eastchester Road, Bronx, NY 10461. Bronislaus Stabach
BOOTHBAY HARBOR, Maine -- Bronislaus " Ben" Stabach, 69, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor, Maine.
He was born on Sept. 23, 1933 in Meriden, the son of the late Stanislav Stabach and Eleanora Gogola Stabach. He was raised in Meriden, where he attended St. Stanislaus School. After graduating from Wilcox Technical School, he began his lifetime career in carpentry. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a longtime member of the Meriden Ski Club, and belonged to the Meriden Striper Club. Many summer weekends were spent fishing in Charlestown, R.I., and deer hunting in Vermont was an annual tradition. His work took him and his family to St. Thomas USVI in 1969 and then to Fayston, Vt., where he lived and worked for over 20 years. In 1993, he moved to Boothbay, Maine, working part-time at the Boothbay Region YMCA, where he made many friends and continued his love for fishing. He was a people person who enjoyed meeting new people, socializing, and telling stories.
Besides his parents he is predeceased by his sister, Leocadia "Lee" Retallack; brothers, Frank Stabach, Louis Stabach, Joseph Stabach and Eugene "Charlie" Stabach. He is survived by his wife of 46 years Mary Ann Baraldi Stabach of Boothbay; daughter, Mary Ellen Stabach of Wiscasset, Maine; son, Michael Stabach of Warren, Vt.; twin brother, Edward Stabach of Portland; sisters, Genevieve "Jenny" Wawrzeniak of Ocala, Fla., Irene Curtis of Madison; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews.
Family and friends will gather on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 1 p.m. in the Coastal Club Room at the Boothbay Region YMCA for a celebration of his life. A memorial Mass will be held at St. Mary's Church in Portland at a later date. Rosalinda Aguero
MERIDEN -- Infant Rosalinda Aguero, seven months, of Crown St., died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002 at MidState Medical Center in Meriden.
Rosalinda was born Feb. 1, 2002 in Meriden, the infant daughter of Reynaldo Aguero and Miriam Rodriguez.
Besides her father of Waterbury and mother of Meriden, she is survived by a sister, Angelica Quinones of Meriden; maternal grandfather, Ladislao Rodriguez Jr. of New Haven; maternal grandmother, Miriam Valentin of Meriden; an uncle, Moises Rodriguez of Meriden; an aunt, Jenny Rodriguez of Meriden; she is also survived by great-grandparents, Ladislao Rodriguez Sr. of Puerto Rico, Juana Rodriguez of Meriden and Marta N. Moya of New Haven.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, at 11 a.m. at the Szymaszek-Taylor Funeral Home, 189 E. Main St., Meriden. Burial will follow at Walnut Grove Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home from 9 until the time of service.
Ernst G. Breitzke
OLD LYME -- Ernst G. Breitzke of Old Lyme, husband of Ruth E. (Schenk) Breitzke, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002 of complications from Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinemia, a rare cancer of plasma cells.
He was born in Aurora, Ill., on Nov. 16, 1916, the son of Ernst and Alvina (Both) Breitzke. He spent most of his life in Meriden, where he graduated from Wilcox Technical School. He married his wife on April 22, 1937, raised his family and was active in church and civic organizations. As a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Ernst was head deacon, served on the church council for eight years and was co-president of the Mr. and Mrs. Club. He was a member of the Meriden Chapter of DeMolay and also Master Counselor. Ernst was a 32nd degree mason and member of the Center Lodge No. 97 A.F. & A.M., Meriden and the Sphinx Temple, Newington for over 50 years. He had been drum major for 20 years for the Sphinx Temple Drum Corps and the Imperial Drum Corps. Ernst was both a championship baton twirler and amateur bowler. His service to the community included: Alderman for four years; chairman, Meriden Transit District; co-chairman of the Meriden Community Action Group; board member of the Meriden Red Cross, Adult Advisory Board and "Helping Elderly People." He established a pre-retirement program within the adult Education Division. Ernst also attended the Weicker CT, Senior Intern Program in Washington , D.C. As a journeyman electrician he was employed by major factories, retiring from General Motors, New Departure, Bristol in 1980. During his work years he was trustee and treasurer of Local Union 987, financial secretary for 16 years of Local 626, along with chairing the scholarship committee. He was president of the Meriden Labor Council and vice president for 16 years of the State Labor Council. Upon his retirement to Old Lyme in 1983 Ernst focused his energies on elderly affairs. He was first president/founder of AARP Lymes Chapter; chairman for three years of the Estuary Regional Committee of Senior Citizens; Old Lyme Municipal Agent for the Elderly for 15 years; chairman of the UAW retirees. He was chairman of the Building Committee for the Lymes Senior Center; he and his wife being instrumental in the creation of that center. Ernst was also a director of the Lymes Senior Center; Lymewood Elderly Housing, Old Lyme Commission on Aging, Old Lyme and Rogers Lake Senior Clubs, CT Coalition on Aging, Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council. Ernst was a parishioner of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Old Saybrook. His service and leadership were recognized with awards: Silver Award for Excellence in Community Activities from General Motors; 1985 "Man of the Year," Old Lyme Grange; 1987 Old Lyme "Citizen of the Year;" AARP awards 1989, 1990. In 1995 he and his wife, Ruth received the "Successful Aging Award" from Connecticut Community Care Inc. During the last months of his life, he was presented an official citation from the Connecticut General Assembly commending "his years of service on the Old Lyme Commission on Aging" and noting that his dedication to helping Old Lyme Senior Citizens :"will not be forgotten." Ernst's other interests included gardening, board games, needlepoint, jigsaw puzzles, solitaire and a good meal! He will be sorely missed especially by his "Ange."
Along with his wife, he leaves a son, Paul E. Breitzke and his wife, Maureen of New Fairfield; a daughter, Pamela R. Shine of Lebanon; a granddaughter, Rachel L. Breitzke and her daughter, Jordyn of Rhode Island; several cousins, nephews, nieces and sisters-in-law. He was predeceased by his sister, Lillian Freeman; and his son-in-law, Gerald F. Shine.
The funeral will assemble at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 4, at the Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, Beckwith Lane, Old Lyme and proceed to a 1 p.m. funeral service at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in Duck River Cemetery, Old Lyme. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southeastern Connecticut, P.O. Caterina Del Buono
MERIDEN -- Caterina Del Buono, 97, of 52 Orchard Hill Road, wife of the late Pasquale Del Buono, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002 in the Bradley Memorial Hospital, Southington.
She was born in Southington, Nov. 29, 1904, a daughter of the late Pasquale and Anna Fasulo Giano. She was a resident of Meriden since 1966. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Like many women of her generation she received pleasure and took pride in being a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Luigi and Marina Del Buono; two daughters, Rosa Coppola and Filomena Marinelli, all of Meriden; seven grandchildren, Pasquale Del Buono, Catherine Del Buono, Rosanna Del Buono, Michael Coppola and his wife, Santi, Pasquale Coppola and his wife, Maria Silvio Marinelli and Andrew Marinelli and his wife, Susan; seven great-grandchildren, Giuseppe, Paula, Rosanna, Carmina and Giuseppe Coppola, also Caterina and Aurelio Marinelli; three sisters, Angelina Iunchi, Maria Saverio and Carmelina Ricci, all of Southington; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers and a sister, Luigi, Giovanni and Stefano Giano and Laura Giano.
Relatives and friends are invited to her funeral Thursday, Oct. 3, beginning with visitation at 8 a.m. in the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden with her Mass of Christian burial in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, at 11 a.m. She will be buried with her husband in St. Thomas Cemetery, Southington. Mrs. Del Buono's family respectfully request that contributions be made to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 109 Goodwill Ave., Meriden, CT 06451.
