Sylvina Church
BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Sylvina Williams Church, 80, of Bethlehem, died unexpectedly on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002 in Pocono Lake (Monroe City) Preserve, Pa. She and her husband, Thomas Trowbridge Church had celebrated their 59th anniversary on Sept. 20.
Born and raised in Wallingford, the third child and only daughter of Daniel Webster and Minette Norton Williams, she graduated from the Day Prospect School in New Haven and earned a BA in English from Vassar College in 1944. Sylvina (Syl) was an active volunteer in community affairs. She worked with Historic Bethlehem Partnership, was past president of the Junior League and of the Sayre Child Center and was active in the Southeast Neighborhood Center, the American Association of University Women and the Northampton County Children's Aid Society. Her most recent efforts were devoted to the establishment of the Burnside Plantation.
Survivors include her brother, D. Norton Williams of Wallingford; six children, Daniel C. Church of Bethlehem, Martha Moore of Belmont, Mass., Thomas N. Church of Philadelphia, Pa., Sara Mullins of Cumberland, Md., Warren B. Church of Columbia, Ga., and Minette C. Church of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
A memorial service will be held at the Cathedral Church of the Nativity, 323 Wyandotte St., Beth, Pa. on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Burnside Plantation, 1461 Schoenersville Road, Beth, Pa., 18018 or to the Cathedral Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the John F. Herron Funeral Home, 458 Center St., Bethlehem, Pa.
Monroe Tremper
WALLINGFORD -- Monroe Tremper, 89, husband of Esther Sweeney Tremper of 342 South Elm St., Wallingford died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002.
Born on July 22, 1913 in Wallingford, he was the son of the late Claud M. and Signae Johnson Tremper. Before his retirement he was the owner of the Fairview Ice Cream Bar and prior to that was the owner of the Fairview Dairy. Mr. Tremper was a member of the Wallingford Country Club and the Elm Boys Club.
In addition to his wife, Esther, he is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan DelGrego and her husband, Andrew and Donna Pietruski and her husband, Ronald; a brother, Erving Tremper of Fort Meade, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Jamie Garcia and her husband, Dan, Scott DelGrego and his wife, Michelle, Mark DelGrego and Courtney Pietruski; a great-granddaughter, Jenna Garcia. He was predeceased by a brother, Claude Tremper.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 2 p.m. at the B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 So. Elm St., Wallingford with the Rev. Dean Warburton of the First Congregational Church of Wallingford officiating. Burial will be at In Memoriam Cemetery, Wallingford. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 1 to 2 p.m. If friends so desire gifts in his memory may be made to American Cancer Society, 538 Preston Ave., Meriden, CT 06450 or any other charity of one's choice.
Sophia M. Wood
NEW BRITAIN -- Sophia M. (Murdzek) Wood, age 81, passed away Monday, Sept. 23,2002. Sophia was the widow of Leonard J. Wood.
She was born in Meriden, daughter of the late Peter and Hedwig Murdzek. She lived most of her life in New Britain, was a member of Saint John the Evangelist Church and its Ladies Guild.
Sophia is survived by her devoted children, a son, Stephen L Wood and his wife, Janice of Wallingford; two daughters, Susan L. Wood of New Britain and Ellen Sutak and her husband, Donald of Plainville; one sister, Stacia LaHaye of Meriden; four grandchildren, David and Michael Sutak of Plainville and Jennifer and Kyle Wood of Wallingford; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, Leonard, she was predeceased by one brother, Thadeus Murdzek of New Britain; and two sisters, Mary Scewczyk of New Britain and Helen Rostock of Meriden.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Saint John the Evangelist Church in New Britain Thursday, Sept 26, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in St Mary Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kenney-Luddy Funeral Home, 205 South Main St., New Britain today from 4 to 7 p.m.
Denise Alfano
SOUTHINGTON -- Denise Downy Alfano of Southington died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002 at New Britain General Hospital. She was 51.
Born in Wilmington, Del., Aug. 30, 1951, daughter of Robert C. Downey and the late Jane S. Downey, she had been a Southington resident for the past 21 years. She worked as a medical secretary in San Francisco and New Britain and as a legal secretary in Hartford. She last worked for her husband who owned his own business with Jostens Printing and Publishing. She did volunteer work for the public schools and her former church. Denise was currently a member of the First Congregational Church of Southington.
Denise is survived by her two daughters, Kris and Carina of Southington; her father, Robert C. Downey of Circleville, Ohio; a brother, Robert C. Downey Jr., also of Circleville, Ohio; two sisters, Debbie Newsome of Worthington, Ohio and Barbara Owens of Albuquerque, New Mexico; two brothers-in-law; one sister-in-law; three nieces; three nephews; and one grand niece. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Alfano.
A memorial service will be held Friday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, Southington. In lieu of flowers, Denise requested that donations in her memory please be made to Hope Lodge, c/o American Cancer Society, 636 West Lexington St., Baltimore, Md 21201. Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home, 975 South Main St., Plantsville has been entrusted with arrangements.
Frank R. Corkin Jr.
MERIDEN -- Frank Randolph Corkin Jr., 87, of 92 Lydale Place, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002 after a lengthy illness.
Born in Bridgeport on Sept. 19, 1915, he was the son of the late Frances Beebe Corkin and Frank Randolph Corkin Sr. He attended local schools and graduated from Meriden High School, class of 1933, and from St. Lawrence University in 1937, where he was President of his class. Soon after the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the Navy and was sent to Midshipman School at Columbia University, where he was commissioned an Ensign and assigned to the destroyer USS Ellet for active duty in the Pacific. After three years in the Pacific he returned to the States as a radar instructor in Georgia. After his discharge with the rank of lieutenant, he returned to Meriden and joined the staff of the Meriden Journal, later becoming Sports Editor of the Record-Journal with a daily column called Frankly Speaking. In 1956 he left the paper to join the staff of the Middlesex Memorial Hospital from which, after over 35 years, he retired as Vice President of Human Resources. He was a member of St. Andrew Episcopal Church, a 50-year member of Center Lodge No. 97 AF & AM and a former member of the Wallingford Country Club. Frank was widely known for his accomplishments as an official in both baseball and basketball. As a basketball official he worked with the American Basketball League, the Eastern League and the Eastern Collegiate Conference. Over the years Frank received many honors including the Meriden Citizen of the Year, Wilcox Tech Outstanding Citizen Award in 1977, the Sportsman of Distinction Award in 1986 and the Art McGinley Award by the Connecticut Sports Writers. He was inducted into the Meriden Hall of Fame in 1957 and the Boys Club Hall of Fame. He was the author of Pacific Postmark, his recollection of his services during World War II and in 1987 he received the Outstanding Alumni Citation from St. Lawrence University.
Frank is survived by his sister, Natalie A. Corkin of Meriden; and several cousins.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Andrew Episcopal Church, 20 Catlin St., Meriden. The Rev. Jane Hassler-White will officiate. Burial will be in the family plot in Pine Grove Cemetery
in Middletown. There are no calling hours. If desired, contributions in Frank's memory may be made to the Meriden Boys and Girls Club, 15 Lincoln St., Meriden, CT 06450. Arrangements are under the direction of the Beecher & Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden.
Stephen J. Gargaly Sr.
MERIDEN -- Stephen J. Gargaly Sr., 73, of Morton Road, Meriden, died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, at the MidState Medical Center in Meriden.
Born in Meriden, Feb. 16, 1929, he was a son of the late Frank and Mary McKenna Gargaly, and had been a lifelong Wallingford-Meriden resident. He was a longtime member of the Meriden Rod and Gun Club and was a veteran of the Korean War, having served with the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his daughter, Sandra D. Gargaly; his two sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen J. Gargaly Jr. and his wife, Linda, and Anthony S. Gargaly and his wife, Jane, all of Wallingford; his four grandchildren, Randy Gargaly, Anthony Gargaly Jr., Casondra Gargaly and Matthew Gargaly; his brother and sister-in-law, Charles J. and Theresa Gargaly of Wallingford; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased his daughter, Cheryle Gargaly; and his brother, Francis Gargaly.
His family will receive relatives and friends in the Yalesville Funeral Home, 386 Main St., Yalesville section of Wallingford, Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Yalesville Funeral Home. Interment with military honors will be at In Memoriam Cemetery
in Wallingford.
Agnes A. Plikunas
NEW BRITAIN -- Agnes A. Plikunas, 96, formerly of Meriden, died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002 at Monsignor Bojnowski Manor.
Born in Hartford on Jan. 14, 1906, she was the daughter of the late Justin and Felse (Witart) Plikunas. Agnes received her elementary and high school education in Hartford. She received her masters degree from Columbia University and was also a graduate of Bellevue Hospital School of Nursing in New York. She was employed with New York City Hospitals in various professional positions. She later became the director of the School of Nursing at Meriden Wallingford Hospital. She was a recipient of the YWCA Loyal Volunteer Service Award in 1974 and was a member of the Meriden Business and Professional Woman's Club and the Connecticut Federation of Business and Professional Women's Club who presented her the Woman of the Year award in 1977.
Agnes is survived by six nieces; a nephew; several grand-nephews; and great-grandnieces.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at Dominic Church, 1050 Flanders Road in Southington. The calling hours will be held at Della Vecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery
in Bloomfield. Memorial donations may be made in her memory to Monsignor Bojnowski Manor, 50 Pulaski St., New Britain, CT 06053.
John A. Potter Sr.
SOUTHINGTON -- John A. Potter Sr., 84, of Sun Valley Drive, Southington, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002 at the Southington Care Center. He was the husband of 50 years of Ruth E. Shumway Potter.
Born Sept. 6, 1918 in Raceville, N.Y., son of the late Martin and Edna Butler Potter, he was a Southington resident for the past 46 years. Mr. Potter worked at New Britain Machine for 42 years before retiring in 1981 and was a crossing guard in Southington on the corner of Berlin St., and Pleasant St., for 10 years. He was also an artist, fisherman and avid gardener.
Besides his wife, Ruth, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Detective Sergeant John A. and Patricia Potter of Southington; his daughters, Suzanne Bennett and her friend, Norma Delgado of Meriden and Valarie and her husband, Carl Page of Montville; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 28, at 10 a.m. at the Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home, 975 South Main St., Plantsville. Burial will follow in South End Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Linda Crum-Olson
TORRINGTON -- Linda Crum-Olson, 44, of Norfolk Road died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002 at Brigham & Womens Hospital in Boston, Mass., following a long illness. She was the wife of Gary Olson.
Born Oct. 21, 1957 in Torrington, she was a daughter of Dorothy Sterling Crum of Canaan and the late William Crum, who died in January of this year. She was formerly employed as a Customer Service Manager at Dominos National Commissary.
In addition to her husband, Gary of Torrington; and mother, Dorothy of Canaan she is survived by four sisters, Judy A. Blass of Ashley Falls, Mass., Diane Sellers of Palermo, Calif., Gerry Blanchette of Acworth, Ga., Donna Phillips of New Hartford; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Monday, Sept. 30, at 11a.m. at The LaPorta Funeral Home, 82 Litchfield St., with Pastor Gale Scott officiating. Burial will be in South Norfolk Cemetery. Calling hours are Sunday, Sept. 29, from 5 to -8 p.m. at the funeral home.
