SEGAL, Charles Norman
After a lengthy illness, Charles Norman Segal passed away on Saturday (September 30, 2000). He was the son of Dora and Joseph Segal and was born in Hartford. Mr. Segal was a distinguished trial attorney in Hartford for many years, a legal lecturer, and, in his quest to advance the science of jurisprudence, he authored many articles. During his formative years, he attended school in the Hartford area and attended Boston University, where he received his academic and law degrees, and was awarded the Juris Doctor Degree from Boston University. Mr. Segal was admitted as an attorney to the Bars of the states of Connecticut and Virginia, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, where he practiced criminal law. He was also admitted to the United States Second Circuit Court of Appeals. He was past president of the Hartford County Bar Association, the Connecticut and American Bar Associations, the American Judicature Society, and was on the Board of Governors of the American Trial Lawyers Association. He also served as past president of the Connecticut chapter of ATLA and was its national executive editor of Amicus Curiae. Mr. Segal was also a Fellow in the International Academy of Trial Lawyers. He was a member of Scribes, the American Society of Writers on legal subjects and received recognition for his meritorious writing. His authorship had also been acknowledged by a Joint Committee on the Continuing Education of the American Law institute and several articles had been published in The Practical Lawyer. Mr. Segal served his country with pride and distinction during World War II and was a captain in the U. S. Air Force where he served in the North African Theatre of Operations. He is survived by his loving wife, Lilian Kelly Segal of West Hartford. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 7, 10:30 a.m. at the Chapel of Emanuel Lutheran Church, 311 Capitol Avenue, Hartford, and will be officiated by The Rev. Dr. John H. Stadtlander, Pastor Emeritus of the Emanuel Lutheran Church. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at St. Francis Hospital. McMULLEN, Leopold W. "Pete"
Leopold W. "Pete" McMullen of Saco, ME, died on Tuesday, (April 11, 2000) at Southern Maine Medical Center after a brief illness. Mr. McMullen was a proud submariner in World War II, serving on the USS Sawfish in the Pacific theatre. He was an electrical contractor in New Britain, for 25 years before joining local 50, IBEW. He is survived by his wife, Noella of New Britain; two sons, Tom of Brookfield, MA, Dennis of Middletown; a daughter, Debbie of Plantation, FL; six grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. He is survived locally by a sister, Pauline Burnham; and two brothers, Richard of Saco, ME, and Patrick of Bowdoinham, ME. Funeral services to be held by Cote's Funeral Home, Saco, ME, on April 14. Visiting hours 11-12 Noon for family, 12 Noon to 1 p.m. all others.
FOX, Esmie
Esmie Fox, 60, of Riverside Ave., Torrington died Tuesday (May 23, 2000) at Adam's House Healthcare Center. Born in St. Kitts, British West Indies, she was a Torrington resident for the last 12 years. She was a former employee of The FM Precision Golf Co. in Torrington and was a member of The Torrington Foursquare Church. She is survived by seven children, Melwyn Fox of Hartford, David Fox of St. Kitts, Glenston Fox and Reuben Garnett and Jasmine Fox of Torrington, Cassandra Fox of New York and Valerie Fox of Hartford. She also leaves 16 grandchildren; and three brothers, Melwyn Fox and Samuel Fox of England and Charles Smith of St. Kitts; and a sister, Daphne Stephens of England. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, May 27, at 9 a.m. at The Advent Christian Church, 217 New Harwinton Rd. (Rt. 4), Torrington with Rev. Ron Boratko officiating. SAMOLYK, Walter H., Jr.
Walter H. Samolyk, Jr., 60, of Denison Rd., Middletown, husband of Jean (Shearer) Samolyk, died Sunday, (May 21, 2000) at Middlesex Hospital. Born in Hartford, he was the son of the late Walter H. and Valerie (Pamula) Samolyk and had lived in Middletown for the past 38 years. Mr. Samolyk was a graduate of Hartford State Technical College, Central Connecticut State University, earning a BS degree in Engineering and did graduate studies at Hartford College. Presently a technical engineering supervisor, he was employed by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft for 40 years working both in Middletown and East Hartford. He was past master and present secretary of St. Johns' Lodge #2 AF&AM, former member of the vestry of the Church of Holy Trinity, chairman of the Charlie Whitehouse Golf Tournament in Hyannis, MA, for many years and was a member of the Army National Guard, Middletown. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, John Kenneth Samolyk and his wife, Ilise of Franklin, MA; two brothers, Edward Samolyk of Windsor and Peter Samolyk of Cromwell; four sisters, Celine Kubaczewski of Chicago, IL, Joni Holligan of Colorado Springs, CO, Lucy Falk of Manchester, and Mary Ann Samolyk of Sarasota, FL; three grandchildren, Elisa Anne, Paul Kenneth and Bryanna Lynn Samolyk. He was predeceased by a daughter, Valerie Anne Samolyk; and a brother, Casimir Samolyk. Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 24 Old Church St., Middletown, on Thursday May 25, at 1 p.m. and interment will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Park, Rocky Hill. REDDEN, Dwynne Ann Lee
Dwynne Ann Lee Redden, 68, of Windsor, died Monday, (October 2, 2000) in Kissimmee, FL. She was born on June 4, 1932, in Hartford, to the late Harry L. Lee and Cicero B. Tilley. She was a certified surgical technician at Hartford Hospital for 40 years. Dwynne was a member of St. Monica's Episcopal Church in Hartford. As a youth, she participated in the Young People's Fellowship. She was a member of the Tigerettes Softball and Basketball team. She played the positions of catcher and forward, respectively. She is survived by her sisters, Gilda Shepherd of Bloomfield, and Beverlye Watkins of Marlborough; niece, Cisalee Harrell of Bloomfield; nephew, Troy Watkins of Newark, DE; great niece, Leslee Harrell of Bloomfield. Dwynne leaves devoted friends, Kenneth McDermott, Keith Price I, and Claudette Davis; two goddaughters, Gabrielle Collins and LaQuaisha Case; a godson, Keith Price, II; and many cousins and friends. Her dearest friends were Irene Perry, Joyce Small, Florence "Tootsie" Wollaston, and the late Helen Wright, also known as "The Birthday Club". Her fishing pals were Lynn Matthews and Daniel Jarrett. KENNEDY, Msgr. John S.
Monsignor John S. Kennedy, 91, of West Hartford, died Tuesday (October 3, 2000). Born in Hartford, he is the son of the late John and Mary (Sexton) Kennedy. He was a graduate of Hartford High School. Msgr. Kennedy was a graduate of St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield. He later graduated from and earned his degrees in Philosophy and Theology from Basselin College, Catholic University, in Washington D.C. He was ordained at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford May 30, 1935, by the Most Rev. Maurice F. McAuliffe, D.D. In June of 1935 he was assigned as an assistant at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in West Hartford and was appointed Associate Editor of the Catholic Transcript. He served as Chaplain at the former Mt. St. Joseph Academy from 1937 to 1946. On May 12, 1954 he began his service as editor of the Catholic Transcript. Msgr. Kennedy was appointed Domestic Prelate in March of 1955 and served as Rector of the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford from 1959 to 1971. He was later named Protonotory Apostolic. On September 7, 1981 he retired as Editor of the Transcript. After leaving the Cathedral he served as pastor emeritus at St. Peter Claver Church in West Hartford. In 1962 Msgr. Kennedy received an honorary degree, Doctor of Literature, from Providence College. He had written three books, was the author of a weekly syndicated column "Balancing the Books" and had written for several national Catholic publications. He also had served as a commentator for several weekly Catholic radio programs. He is survived by his niece, two nephews and their spouses, Nicholas S. and Susan Walsh of West Hartford, Cecily W. and Dr. Michael P. Connair, M.D. of Hamden, Gregory C. and Marsha Walsh, M.D. of West Hartford; 13 grandnieces and grandnephews; and his cousins, Kathleen Boyle and Joseph L. Kennedy. The funeral will be Friday, Oct. 6 with the celebration of his funeral mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Peter Claver Church, 47 Pleasant St., West Hartford. The Most Reverend Daniel A. Cronin, Archbishop of Hartford will be the Principal Celebrant. Burial will be private. Calling hours are TODAY from 5-8 p.m. at the parish center of St. Peter Claver Church. KRUEGER, Beatrice "Bea" A.
Beatrice "Bea" A. (Mashino) Krueger, 85, of Newington, widow of Lewis Krueger, died Wednesday, (October 4, 2000) at a local convalescent home. She was born in Black Duck, MN, daughter of the late Frank and Zella (Tapsley) Mashino and had lived in Illinois for a number of years before coming to Newington in 1985. She is survived by four sons, Kenneth R. Krueger of East Hampton, Richard L. Krueger and his wife, Barbara of Newington, Bruce C. Krueger and his wife, Kathleen and David N. Krueger and his wife, Jan, all of Illinois; six grandchildren, Jeffrey, Thomas, Brian, Steven, Michael and Erika; and a special friend, Susan Johnson of Newington. JOHNSON, Debra L. (Olesen)
Debra L. (Olesen) Johnson, 27, of County Road, Killingworth, loving wife of Christopher E. Johnson, died suddenly Friday, (March 24, 2000) at home. Born in Middletown, she was the beloved daughter of William G. and Bonnie (Lubanda) Olesen of Durham. Debi lived most of her life in Durham, moving to Killingworth in 1993. Besides her husband and her parents, she is survived by two sons, Brandon C. and Corey M. Johnson, both at home; twin daughters, Jessica H. and Samantha L. Johnson, both at home; a brother and his wife, William G. Olesen, II and Alison of Durham; a sister, Nancy Resino of Salisbury, NC; mother-in-law, Margaret Johnson of Killingworth; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Debi's love and devotion to her children went beyond words. Her children were the light of her life and with her husband, their family was everything. Even though she is not here to physically embrace them each and everyday, her love will radiate forever around them as their beloved angel. WALKER, William Collins
William Collins Walker, born April 21, 1940, died Tuesday (April 18, 2000). He was a long time resident of Collinsville. William was a Vietnam Veteran who was a member of the U.S. Army Special forces and was honorably discharged, November 18, 1966. William Walker worked for Ames Department Store for 18 years and was vice president of Basic Replenishment. He also was owner of Canton Package Store from 1983 to 1993. He was a gourmet cook and a lover of fine wine. He collected music from Blues to Beethoven and became an avid fisherman. He was a member of Albert Johnson, Post 90 of the American Legion in Collinsville. Bill was predeceased by his father, William Gaines Walker and his mother, Helena Collins Walker of Newark, NJ and brother, Ollie Perry Walker of Plainfield, NJ. Left to mourn his passing, is his wife of 35 years, Yang-Suk; his sisters, Morgan Fleming of Canton, Helena Hicks of Piscataway, NJ, and Beth McCabe of Canton; and his brothers, Seth Hicks of Piscataway, NJ, and Albert Fleming of St. Louis, MO; also his brothers and sister-in-law, Sin Sok Vi, Yon Chi Yi, Yang Sim Yi, Yang Un Yi and Ok Ja Yi. William had no children but he leaves many nieces and nephews, including Valerie Akauola, David Fleming, William P. Walker, Todd Hicks, Seth Hicks Jr., Constance Bridges, Denea Walker, Kimberly Hicks, Lelisa Mason, Kwan Yi, Ji Sook Yi, Sione Akauola, Na'ati Akauola, Billy Morgan Akauolo, Hyun Sik Chong, Yu Chong Yi, Yun Chong Yi, Ji Sook Yi, Sang Kil Yi, Sue Yi Chong, Chai Chung Yi and Chae Uk Yi. William was also grand uncle to Desmund and Damon Fleming, Young Jae Yi and Alexandra Chong, Constance Delmau and Joyce Rankins. MERCIER, David W.
David W. Mercier, 51, of East Hartford died suddenly of a heart attack on Monday (October 2, 2000) while visiting friends in Plattsburgh, NY. Dave was known for his generosity and concern toward family, friends and acquaintances alike. He leaves kind, wonderful memories in each of their hearts. He was an avid golfer and hunter as well as an enthusiastic fan of UConn basketball. Born in Barre, VT to Carl and Nellie Mercier, he moved to East Hartford in 1959. After attending Penny High School he proudly served three years in the United States Marine Corps and was a veteran of Vietnam. He worked for over 25 years at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft and was actively involved in the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. Dave was proud of his role as an instructor for Health and Safety in the Workplace, as well as his role as a sponsor in Alcoholics Anonymous. Dave leaves behind his brother and sister-in-law, Carl J. and Mary C. Mercier; his beloved niece and nephew, Carlene and Tim Mercier; a great aunt, Elizabeth Hafey; an uncle, Stanley Paige; several cousins; and many special friends. Those left behind will miss his warmth, sense of humor and joy for life. The burial will be in Barre, VT on Saturday, October 7. GUILMETTE, Anastasia
Anastasia Guilmette, 87, formerly of Farmington, widow of Albert Guilmette, died Friday, (September 29, 2000) at Brasswell's Colonial Care in Redlands, CA. Anastasia was a native of Orange, MA and lived at the Rose Garden Residential Care for the Elderly in Mentone, CA for the last four years. Anastasia was a Methodist by faith. She is survived by her nephew, John F. Iram of Rialto, CA. She was also predeceased by her beloved son, Paul Guilmette. Graveside funeral services will be Saturday, 10:30 a.m., in Riverside Cemetery, Farmington, with the Rev. James Hoffman officiating. Arrangements are being handled by The Ahern Funeral Home, Inc.
SUPPLE, Robert E., Jr.
Robert E. Supple, Jr., 61, beloved husband of Terry (Dube) Supple, whom she dearly loved and cherished, died Wednesday, (May 24, 2000) at Middlesex Memorial Hospital. He was born in Hartford, son of the late Robert E. and Irene (Ursin) Supple, and was a life long resident of this area. He was a graduate of Middletown High School, attended Fairfield University and Hillyer College (now University of Hartford). He was employed by the Department of Transportation, State of Connecticut, for 32 years, retiring in 1994. He then became Deputy Sheriff, Middlesex County, until the present time. Bob loved his career as Deputy Sheriff because he was able to be a help to others. He was a breeder of Doberman Pincers and loved his two dogs, Fritzie and Katie. He was a member of the A.O.H. Portland Middletown Division, National Rifle Association, Middletown County Sheriffs Association, a member of the 4th degree Knights of Columbus, Middletown Council, and served in the Connecticut National Guard. He was an avid golfer, loved hunting and fishing, and the great outdoors. Also, Bob was a Decoy Duck Carver. Besides his wife, he leaves his sister and brother-in-law, Jacqueline and Walter Shea of St. Helena Island, SC and Hyannis, Cape Cod, MA; his mother and father-in-law, Mary and Lionel Dube of Hartford; two sisters-in-law, Caroline Balch and her companion, Frank Freeman, of East Hartford, and Jolene Mastrio and her husband, John, of Hartford; a brother-in-law, "Buzz" Dube of West Hartford; his aunt, Sarah Supple, of West Hartford; two uncles, Vincent Supple of Sarasota, FL, and Raymond Ursin of South Windsor; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held Saturday, May 27 at 8:45 a.m. from the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Road, Wethersfield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Corpus Christi Church, 601 Silas Deane Highway, Wethersfield. CHAPIN, Pauline (Spear)
Pauline (Spear) Chapin, 82, widow of Walter S. Chapin, Sr., of Suffield, died Tuesday, (October 3, 2000) at home. Born in Brookline, MA on May 19, 1918, daughter of the late, Arthur and Grace (Chapman) Spear, and had lived in Suffield for the last 34 years. Before retiring, she was a math teacher for the Suffield High School for 15 years. Mrs. Chapin was a member of the Second Baptist Church, the Suffield Garden Club and the Suffield Women's Club. She was a member and past president of Suffield Visiting Nurse Association. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Walter S. Chapin, Jr., and Eleanor Chapin of Indianapolis IN; a daughter and son-in-law, Virginia Gordon-Root and Bennett Root of Huntington Beach, CA; six grandchildren, Kimberly and her husband, Dennis Butler of Midland, MI, Laura Paige Collins of Noblesville, IN, Sasha Ransom of Huntington Beach, CA, Rebecca Gordon of Los Gatos, CA, Sarah Gordon and Joshua Gordon, both of Huntington, CA; and three great grandchildren, Danielle and Kyle Collins and Taryn Pauline Butler. A memorial service will be Monday, 11 a.m., in the First Baptist Church, Hill St., Suffield, with the Rev. Paul Hayes, officiating. HARPER, Roscoe, Jr.
Roscoe Harper, Jr., 61, of Hartford died Saturday (April 1, 2000) at Hartford Hospital. Visitation hours are Friday, 3-6 p.m. with funeral service commencing at 6 p.m at Clark, Bell & Bell Funeral Home, 319 Barbour St., Hartford. Burial Saturday, 9 a.m. in Spring Grove Cemetery, Hartford.
SCHUR, David
David Schur, 87, died Tuesday, (September 26, 2000) at Seabury Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. A resident of Bloomfield for the past 25 years, he was born in New York City, August 23, 1913. He graduated from City College, then served in the Army, hitting the Normandy Beach on D-Day-Plus-Four. He was mustered out as a first lieutenant, having earned the Bronze Service Arrowhead, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, American Theater Service Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. He lectured at City College, NY, received a Master in Social Work from Adelphi University, then was a social worker at the Northport, NY, VA Hospital. Later, he was a clinical psychiatric social worker at the Brentwood Psychiatric Center. Following their retirements in 1975, he and his second wife, the late Renate Armstrong, moved to Bloomfield and went into private practice as family counselors. In his retirement, he volunteered extensively for the American Red Cross, counseling veterans and families in bereavment, coordinating transportation services for the homeless and chairing the Emergency Services Committee. He also was an active member of the Unitarian Society of Hartford, traveled around the globe and summered at the Chatauqua Institution in New York. He is survived by two daughters, Ellen of Israel and Anne of Richland, WA; their mother, Jeanette Cohen Sutton; and two sisters, Natalie Varonok and Gertrude Charnas. A memorial service will be held Friday, October 27, 2 p.m. at the Unitarian Meeting House, 50 Bloomfield Avenue, Hartford. For those wishing to honor his memory, donations may be made to American Red Cross or Unitarian Church.
