Ida V. Brunell
MERIDEN -- Ida V. Brunell, 82, formerly of 60 Hanover St., wife of the late Frederick J. Brunell, died on Friday, Aug. 16, 2002 at Southington Care Center.
Born in Meriden on Jan. 21, 1920, the daughter of the late Ottavio and Frances Lullien Valenti, she had resided in Meriden all her life and attended Meriden schools. Mrs. Brunell was employed by New Departure for many years and was a parishioner of St. Laurent Church.
She is survived by two sisters and one brother-in-law, Sylvia V. and DeForest Cooper of Wallingford and Semone V. Curry Of Meriden; two nieces and four nephews, Joanne Curry, MaryBeth Valenti, John J. Curry III, Kevin M. Curry and Robert Valenti; and a special nephew, David J. Cooper. She was predeceased by a brother, Otto Valenti; a niece, Kathleen Cooper Savage; and a brother-in-law, John J. Curry Jr.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend a funeral service to be held on Monday, Aug. 19, at 11 a.m. in the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden. Friends may call prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. Laurent Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 300 Research Pkwy., Meriden, CT 06450. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and other caregivers at Southington Care Center.
Emma Mercuri
MERIDEN -- Emma (Immacalata) Tavernese Mercuri, 101, passed away into eternal glory on Friday, Aug. 16, 2002. She was the wife of the late Pasquale Mercuri.
Born in Grotteria, Italy, April 16, 1901, she was the daughter of the late Domenic and Maria Teresa Arcuri Tavernese. She immigrated to Meriden with her husband in 1922. A devoted, original member of the Italian Baptist Church (later named Grace Baptist Church) her life verse was John 3:16. She later joined the First Church of Christ in Old Wethersfield. During the 30's and 40's Emma operated a grocery store on Springdale Ave. and was famous for her lemon ice. Her greatest loves were her family, cooking, gardening, reading her bible, and crocheting. Emma will be fondly remembered for her kind and loving ways and generosity to family, friends, and neighbors. She will be greatly missed by all her family members.
She is survived by her daughters, Gloria Mercuri and Helen D'Angelo; her sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Alice Mercuri and Robert and Jean Mercuri. Her blessings also include 10 grandchildren, Sandra and Chris Ulbrich, Dr. Diana and Breck Jeffery, Dale and Lucy D'Angelo, James and Linda Mercuri, Patricia and Ronald Koniuta, Linda and Ronald Biedrycki, Joan and Al Cizek, Carol and Dennis Hannon, Janice and Steven Grossman, Gary and Trisha Tomassetti; 18 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and many devoted nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and special friends. She was predeceased by two daughters, an infant, Rose Marie and Rose Tomassetti; a sister, Francesca Mercuri; and two brothers, Domenic and Bruno Tavernese.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday at a time and place to be announced in Monday's paper with Dr. Jey Defell officiating. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. George E. Sands
MERIDEN -- George E. "Mike" Sands, 50, of 275 Hanover St., beloved husband of Arline F. (Grant) Sands, died Aug. 16, 2002, at MidState Medical Center in Meriden after a two-year battle with melanoma.
He was born on Oct. 24, 1951, in Dexter, Maine, a son to the late Robert and Elizabeth (Cunningham) Sands. He was employed by Ideal Forge of Southington. He was a member of the Melanoma Research Foundation and a parishioner of St. Joseph Church in Meriden.
In addition to his wife of 30 years, he is survived by a son Tommy True Sands of Meriden; a daughter, Christen and (Thomas) Powell Sr. of Middletown; one brother, Bill sands and his fiancee, Patricia Myher of Wallingford; one grandchildren, Tommy Powell Jr.
A funeral service will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 20, at 11 a.m. Calling hours will be from 10 to 11 a.m. followed by burial at Sacred Heart Cemetery
in Meriden. A celebration of Mike's life and adventures will take place at his home following the burial. The Szymaszek-Taylor Funeral Home, 189 East Main St., Meriden has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Albert T. Ghezzi
MERIDEN -- Albert T. Ghezzi, 94, 80 Hanover St., died on Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at home after a brief illness.
Born in Meriden, Dec. 7, 1907, he was the son of the late Santi and Rosa Polvani Ghezzi and he had resided in Meriden most of his life. He had attended local schools, the Pequot Business School and the Fort Trumble Officers Candidate School in 1943. Mr. Ghezzi was employed by International Silver Co. of Meriden, retiring 30 years ago. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Navy and the Merchant Marines, was aboard the U.S.S. Pueblo during the Boxer Rebellion and also spent time on the submarine U.S.S. Pargo. Mr. Ghezzi was a past president of the North Italian Home Club, belonged to the Eagles and the Bocci clubs, and was involved locally with the PBA.
He is survived by his sister and her husband, Lena Kuzmak and John of Haines City, Fla.; three nieces, Gloria Ghezzi of Meriden, Marybeth Wishart and her husband, Craig of Middletown, Dolores Lucas and her husband, George of Bedford, N.H.; two nephews, Att. Thomas Sartini and his wife, Marlene of Ashtabula, Ohio and Dr. Richard Sartini of Palm Springs, Calif. He was predeceased by four brothers, Angelo Ghezzi, Richard Cacioli, Alfredo Cacioli, and Tullio Passeri.
The funeral will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 21, at 10 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., Meriden, and at 10:30 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday prior to the Mass from 8 to 10 a.m.

Rev. Dawson D. Trenchard
WALLINGFORD -- Reverend Dawson David Trenchard, 69, retired Pastor of The Church of the Resurrection in Wallingford, and of Harwich, Mass., died suddenly on Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, Mass.
Born in Wethersfield, Jan. 22, 1933, he was a son of the late Ira W. and Irma A. Kendall Trenchard. Father Trenchard attended St. Peter School in Hartford, and was a graduate of St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield as President of his class in 1952, and St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, Md. He was Ordained a Priest, May 15, 1958, in St. Lawrence O'Toole Church in Hartford by The Most Reverend Henry J. O'Brien. He was assigned as an assistant to St. Mary's Church in Branford, in May, 1958, then as assistant to St. Thomas in Southington in September 1958, St. Peter Church in Hartford, in 1965, the Church of the Resurrection in Wallingford, in 1966, St. Patrick in Farmington in 1969, as Assistant Pastor at St. George in Guilford in 1976. He had served as Pastor of St. Patrick-St. Anthony in Hartford from 1981 until 1990. He was then appointed as Pastor of the Church of the Resurrection in 1990 served as Pastor until June of 2000, and held the position as Administrator of the Church until his retirement in July of 2000. Father Trenchard had resided at Our Lady of Fatima Church in the Yalesville section of Wallingford since his retirement. He has had a residence in Harwich for many years. Father had been the Chaplain of the East Wallingford Volunteer Fire Department.
He was predeceased by his only brother and sister-in-law, Kendall I. Trenchard, and Elizabeth Campion Trenchard of Guilford. He is survived by his eight beloved nieces and nephews, Mary Elizabeth Trenchard of Southington, Kendall B. Trenchard of Hebron, Thomas A. Trenchard of Avon, Mark C. Trenchard of Franklin, Mass., Neil R. Trenchard of Morganville, N.J., Kathleen T. Quinlan of Alpharetta, Ga., Major Terrance D. Trenchard (USMC) of Newport, R.I., and Patricia E. Trenchard of Dallas, Texas ; numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. He was more than an uncle to his nieces and nephews. He was an important part of the family, and he will be sorely missed. He also leaves his faithful dog, Gretel, and many dear parishioners, and friends from Coast to Coast, who will remember him for his acts of generosity, kindness, and love.
Father Trenchard's family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street Extension, Wallingford, Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002, from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. He will be received at The Church of The Resurrection, Wallingford, Wednesday at 4 p.m., and will lie in state until 7:30 p.m., when a parish Mass will be celebrated at the Church.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002, at 11 a.m. at The Church of The Resurrection. The Most Reverend Daniel A. Cronin, Archbishop of Hartford, will be Principal Celebrant. Interment will be in Village Cemetery, Wethersfield. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be sent to The Church of The Resurrection, 115 Pond Hill Road, Wallingford, CT 06492, or Gaylord Hospital, Gaylord Farm Rd., Wallingford, CT 06492.
Joseph A. Winoski
MERIDEN -- Joseph A. Winoski, 86, of 72 Steuben St., husband of the late Laura (Figarola) Winoski, died Saturday, evening at Conn. Hospice in Branford.
Born in Meriden, Sept. 30, 1915, he was a son of the late William and Stella (Kuczman) Winoski and had resided in Meriden all his life. Mr. Winoski was educated in the Meriden schools and had been employed by A.M.F. Cuno Manufacturing Co. of Meriden until his retirement. He was a veteran of World War II having served with the U.S. Navy in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Suzanne Winoski of Meriden; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lorelle and Robert Raguckas of Meriden and Judith and Alan Swiech of Michigan; seven grandchildren, Bryan, Laura, and Joseph Winoski, Bobby and Taylor Raguckas, and Eric and Kelly Swiech; one sister, Stella Appelle of Meriden; a special sister-in-law and her husband, Rose and Frank Sargalski; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Adeline Penta and Charlotte Winoski.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, at 9:30 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., and at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Burial with military honors will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. prior to the Mass. Salvatore R. Gello
WALLINGFORD -- Salvatore R. Gello, 71, of Mapleview Road, Wallingford, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, at his home surrounded by his loving family after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of Janeen E. Christoni Gello.
Born in Wallingford, Nov. 26, 1930, he was a son of the late Ralph A. Gello Sr. and the late Eleanor Gerace Gello and had been a lifelong resident. Along with his daughter Janet, he was the proprietor of Gello Brothers Inc., a family owned and operated business, in Wallingford for many years. He devoted his life to his business and his families interest in it. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served during the Korean War and was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church in Wallingford.
Besides his wife, Janeen, he is survived by his three daughters, Sally A. Gello Silvers and her husband, Dennis A. Silvers M.D., of Andover, Mass., Karyn R. Gello-Manghis and her husband, Charles A Manghis of Nantucket, Mass., and Janet M. Gello of Wallingford; his five grandchildren, Anthony G. Baur, Janeen E. Manghis, Kristy R. Baur, Eve M. Manghis, and Alana R. Manghis; his brother, Ralph A. Gello Jr. of Wallingford; his mother-in-law, Mary (Christoni) DeMartino; his stepmother, Irene (Vera) Gello; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Vincent Christoni, and Joseph and Marie Christoni, all of Wallingford, John and Katherine Christoni of Bedford, N.H., and Rosemary Christoni Pachesa of Storrs, several aunts, uncles and many nieces and nephews.
His family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street, Ext., Wallingford, Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 9:30 from the Wallingford Funeral Home, when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery

Leonard E. Krupa
MERIDEN -- Leonard Edward Krupa, 63, died on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002 at MidState Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born in Meriden on March 15, 1939, the son of the late George Krupa Sr. and Mary Nozynski Krupa, he was a lifelong resident of Meriden and graduated from Wilcox Technical School. Mr. Krupa was employed by Westvaco for 25 years and St. Johnsbury Trucking until his retirement. He was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church.
He is survived b his former wife, Laura Krupa; and his daughter, Karin DeSanti, both of Wallingford; his daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Joseph Perry of Burlington; three grandchildren; a sister, Dolores Murdocca of Meriden; two brothers, Richard Krupa and George Krupa Jr., both of Florida; also several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
The funeral will be held on Thursday, Aug. 22, at 11 a.m. in the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden with Rev. Edmund Nadolny officiating. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to a charity of one's choice.
Christopher D. Novicki
SOUTHINGTON -- Christopher D. Novicki, 21, of 115 Partridge Drive, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002.
He was the son of Daniel A. and Bernadette (Staszczyszyn) Novicki and was born in New Britain on Feb. 11, 1981. He was active in sports having played with the North Little League All Stars in baseball along with playing basketball and soccer. Christopher graduated in 1999 from Southington High School.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandparents, Joseph and Maria Staszczyszyn of Hatfield, Mass.; paternal grandmother, Olga and the late Anthony Novicki of Meriden; a sister, Allison and her husband, Nathan Rand of Weymouth, Mass.; aunts and uncles, Andrea and Ernest Adduci of Meriden and Teresa and Dana Weybrew of Hatfield, Mass.; cousins, Jason and Michael Adduci of Meriden and Lauren and Adam Weybrew of Hatfield, Mass.
The funeral will be held Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. from the Della Vecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington to Mary Our Queen Church for a Mass at 10 a.m. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in his memory to St. Dominic School, 1050 Flanders Road, Southington, CT 06489.
