Sheila Burke
MERIDEN -- Sheila O'Neill Burke, 70, of Overlook Drive, died Friday, July 12, 2002, in Hartford Hospital. She was the beloved wife of Lawrence Burke.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, March 17, 1932, a daughter of the late Hugh and Agnes Lappin O'Neill, she was a Meriden resident for the past 12 years. She had been employed by SNET for over 20 years until her retirement in 1989.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Burke is survived by her daughter, Pauline M. (Mrs. Daniel P.) Wallace of Meriden; her son and daughter-in-law, Martin L. and Lisa A. Burke of Meriden; her grandchildren; Jared Wallace, Devin Wallace, Brigid Burke, and Catherine Burke, and Catherine Burke; a sister, Catherine Hannak of Scotland; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son-in-law, Daniel P. Wallace and her five sisters; and two brothers.
Her family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wallingford, Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday at 9 a.m. from the Wallingford Funeral Home, when the funeral cortege will proceed to the Church of the Resurrection, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association, 2911 Dixwell Ave., Hamden, CT 06418.
Mary T. Gordon
MERIDEN -- Mary T. Gordon, 94, of 435 Blackstone Village, wife of the late Abraham I. Gordon, died on Friday, July 12, 2002, at MidState Medical Center in Meriden after a brief illness.
Born in New York City on June 2, 1908, the daughter of the late Joseph and Rebecca Tucker, she had been a resident of Meriden for the past 73 years. Mrs. Gordon had been an employee and volunteer at the former World War II Veterans Memorial Hospital in Meriden since 1971, and was involved with the Red Cross Telephone Bloodmobile for some 25 years. She was a member of Congregation B'Nai Abraham and a former Hadassah Chairwoman.
She is survived by a daughter, Roberta G. Beck of Bloomfield; two grandchildren and their wives, H. Jeffrey Beck and Lauren Winer-Beck of Milford, and Brian P. Beck and Pamela Orczyk-Beck of Huntington, L.I., N.Y.; also three nieces; and a nephew. She was predeceased by her son, Marvin T. Gordon.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend graveside services to be held on Sunday , July 14, 2002, at 3 p.m. at B'Nai Abraham Cemetery, Corrigan Ave., Meriden, with Rabbi Edward Friedman officiating. A period of mourning will be held at her late residence, 435 Blackstone Village, Meriden, from Sunday through Wednesday, July 17th. Should friends desire, contributions in her memory may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are under the direction of the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden.
Walter T. Dexter Jr.
SOUTHINGTON -- Walter T. Dexter Jr., 84, of West Street, died Saturday, July 13, 2002, at Tandem Health Care. He was the loving husband for 44 years of Dorothea McKay Dexter.
He was born in New Britain, Nov. 10, 1917, the son of the late Walter Sr. and Anna Dudsick Dexter. Walter had been a Southington resident for more than 75 years where he resided at the family owned Pine Grove Farm. He had also operated W.T. Dexter Industrial Catering from 1948-1990.
In addition to his wife, Dorothea, Walter is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Marcia and Keith Gardiner of Southington; his brother, Richard Dexter of Florida; and his sister, Marion Colson of Willington, Vt.; also two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 17, at 10 a.m. at the Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home, 975 S. Main St., Plantsville. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m., and Wednesday from 9 to 10 a.m., prior to the service.
Rachel D. Fernandes
WALLINGFORD -- Rachel DiChello Fernandes, 94, of Colony Street, died Sunday, July 14, 2002, at the Bradley Hospital in Southington. She was the wife of the late Emanuel Fernandes.
Born in Wallingford, April 5, 1907, she was a daughter of the late Felix and Lucrezia Simone DiChello, she had been a lifelong resident. She was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church in Wallingford.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Edward Converse of Meriden; her two grandchildren, John Converse and his wife, Doreen, and Lisa Monty and her husband, Robert; her two great-grandchildren, Amber Converse and Kyle Monty; her two brothers, Louis DiGhello and Frank DiGhello, both of Wallingford; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Jennie DeBaise; and four brothers, Pasquale DiGhello, Alexander DiGhello, Fred DiGhello, and Anthony DiChello.
Her family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street Ext., Wallingford, Tuesday, from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. from the Wallingford Funeral Home, when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery
in Wallingford.
Napoleon Martineau
CLINTON -- Napoleon "Nap" Martineau, 95, died on July 13, in Old Saybrook. He was predeceased by his wife, Louise Norkus.
Mr. Martineau was born in Sherbrooke, Canada on April 24, 1907, son of Rosalie Vincent and Arthur Martineau. He was the last of their nine children.
Mr. Martineau was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was a 4th Degree Knight. He served in the National Guard, Company B and was active in the Clinton Rotary Club. He was a co-founder of the Yankee Clipper Club. An accomplished writer, he was Sports Editor of the San Salvador News and Editor of the Mite Messenger. He was involved in sports all his life and was a devoted fan of the UConn Women's Basketball team. He was also a well-known toastmaster.
Survivors include his daughters, Joan Abt and her husband, Stephen of Wallingford, Barbara Harrington and her husband, William of Englewood, Fla., Stephanie LeMay of Clinton, and Cynthia Martineau of Longboat Key, Fla. He also leaves 11 beloved grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and his dear friend, Elizabeth Marino.
Calling hours will be held at the Swan Funeral Home, 80 E. Main St., Clinton, Monday, July 15, 2002, from 5 to 8 p.m. The funeral procession will be leaving the funeral home Tuesday at 9:45 a.m. followed by a funeral liturgy at St. Mary's Church of the Visitation in Clinton at 10 a.m. The burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Joseph J. Wanat
WALLINGFORD -- Joseph J. Wanat, 90, of Parker Farms Road, died Saturday, July 13, 2002, at the Masonic Health Care Center in Wallingford. He was the husband of the late Dorothy T. Schultz Wanat.
Born in Wallingford, July 14, 1911, he was a son of the late Michael and Katherine Kramer Wanat and had been a lifelong resident. He was employed by the New Departure division of General Motors, in Meriden and Bristol, as an Experimental Engineer for many years until his retirement, and was a parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Yalesville.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four sisters, Sophie Tomko, Mary Tencza, Helen Lisee, and Victoria Williams; and a brother, Walter Wanat.
His family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street Ext., Wallingford, Tuesday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., when the funeral cortege will proceed to Our Lady of Fatima Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery

Marion Comstock
MERIDEN -- Marion Belle Comstock, 81, formerly of 163 Evansville Ave., South Meriden, died Saturday, July 13, 2002 at the Connecticut Baptist Home in Meriden. She was the wife of Raymond Edward Comstock.
Born in Esmond, Rhode Island, on Dec. 4, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Elton L. and Susie Longfellow Mathewson. She had been employed as a secretary at the former Jefferson Savings Bank. She was a Grange member for 64 years, the last membership with Cheshire Grange No. 63.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Judith Orlando of Southington; two sons, Donald E. Comstock of Wallingford and Richard E. Comstock of Lisbon, N.H.; a sister, Mildred Lewis of North Providence, R.I.; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Susan DuBois; a brother, Edmund C. DeLaCour; a sister, Lillis Packman; and two grandchildren, Dean Lattman and Kim Lattman.
A private service and burial will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of the Beecher & Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. Leonard R. Hendricks
MERIDEN -- Leonard Rolls Hendricks, 43, of Willow St., Meriden passed away on Thursday, July 11, 2002 at home. He was the son of Marion Jean (Hope) Rolls and the late John Hendricks.
In addition to his mother, he also leaves a daughter, Destiny Rolls of Pennsylvania ; a brother, Kenny Rolls of Ohio; two sisters, Peggy Karbonic of Newington and Debra Mitchell of Bristol; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Thomas H. Kavanaugh
WALLINGFORD -- Thomas H. Kavanaugh, 84, of Cottage St., Yalesville, died Monday, July 15, 2002 at his home. He was the beloved husband of the late Yvonne L'Ecuyer Kavanaugh.
Born in Wallingford, Jan. 8, 1918, a son of the late William and Catherine Murphy Kavanaugh, he was longtime Yalesville resident. He had been employed at Allegheny-Ludlum Steel Corp., for many years until his retirement. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Church, and a member of the Men's Club of the parish. Long active in Wallingford Democratic Party activities, he had been an Assistant Registrar of Voters for 20 years, a member of the Wallingford Board of Education for five years, and the Wallingford Recreation Board. He had served of the Planning and Zoning Commission, and had been a member of the Democratic Town Committee. A Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus, he was a member of Pinta Council in Wallingford. He was also a member of the Connecticut Striper's Club, Wallingford Rod and Gun Club, the Yalesville Volunteer Fire Department, and had been vice-president of SOAR (Society of Allegheny Retirees.) He had been a founder of the Yalesville Little League, and had been a coach for the Wallingford Junior Twilight League.
He is survived by his two daughters, Kathleen Kavanaugh Allard and her husband, Robert and Jacqueline Ann Kavanaugh, all of Wallingford; his two sons, Gerald T. Kavanaugh and his wife, Charlotte and Timothy Kavanaugh and his wife, Mary Alice, all of Yalesville; his nine grandchildren, Sean Kavanaugh, Colin Kavanaugh, Carinne Davis, Robert Allard Jr., Tracy Allard, Scott Allard, Megan Kavanaugh, Daniel Kavanaugh and Patrick Kavanaugh; his three great-grandchildren, Peter Allard, Joseph Allard and Griffin Kavanaugh; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Dianne Kavanaugh Davis; his sister and brother-in-law, Mary and James Hunter; and his brother and sister-in-law, William and Clara Kavanaugh.
