Lois L. McLaughlin
WALLINGFORD -- Lois L. McLaughlin, 83, of 47 Heritage Woods, died and is now with her heavenly father. She was the wife of the late Clifford McLaughlin Sr.
She was born in Springfield, Maine, March 4, 1919, a daughter of the late Torry and Ada Boyington Merrill. She belonged to the Center Congregational Church in Meriden.
She was devoted to her family and is survived by two daughters, Jacklyn Krampitz of Wallingford and Caroline Anderson of Waymart, Pa.; a daughter-in-law, Judyann Wilkerson of Lake City, Fla.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Becky McLaughlyn of Virginia Beach, Va., Ronald and Josie McLaughlin of Kensington; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth and Jean Merrill of Danielson, Roderick Merrill of Roy, Utah, Russell and Char Merrill of Fort Meyers Beach, Fla., Clifford and Jan Merrill of Fort Collins, Colo.; two sisters, Noreen and her husband, Larry Elliot of Sun City Center, Fla., Gladys Leighton of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Juanita Dill of Lincoln, Maine; 21 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three step grandchildren; two great-step-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many loving friends. She was predeceased by two sons, Clifford McLaughlin Jr. and John McLaughlin; a brother, Harry Merrill; and four sisters, Dorothy Abt, Louise Pregue, Norma Greiner and Evelyn Locastro.
A private burial will take place in Carroll, Maine at the convenience of the family. May she rest in peace. Contributions may be made to the VNA at MidState VNA and Hospice, 658 Broad St., Meriden, CT 06450. The Beecher & Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden is in charge of arrangements.
William C. Simmons
WALLINGFORD -- William C. Simmons, 77, of Wharton Brook Drive, Wallingford, died Monday, July 8, 2002, at the MidState Medical Center in Meriden. He was the beloved husband of the late Olga "Dolly" Trofimchik Simmons.
Born in Wallingford, Sept. 1, 1924, he was a son of the late Clarence "Mike" and Elsie Wustrack Simmons and was a lifelong resident. Mr. Simmons was employed by the former Wallace Silversmiths, and former Yalesville Silver Company, both of Wallingford for many years until his retirement. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy on the destroyer USS Hilary P. Jones.
He is survived by his three sons and daughter-in-law, John Simmons and Thomas and Dorothy Simmons, all of Wallingford and Peter Simmons, of Hinesville, Ga.; his grandson, Thomas Simmons Jr.; his two sisters, Elsie Swantek of Cheshire and Mary Fornal of Meriden; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his three brothers, Henry, George and Clarence Simmons.
His family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street, Ext., Wallingford, Friday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday in the Wallingford Funeral Home at 7:15 p.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 538 Preston Ave., Meriden, CT 06450.
Stanley V. Stasilowicz
SOUTHINGTON -- Stanley V. Stasilowicz, 81, of Southington, died Monday, July 8, 2002 at Bradley Memorial Hospital following a long illness. He was the loving husband of 48 years of Elizabeth "Betty" Parylak Stasilowicz.
Born in Southington, Nov. 18, 1920, he was the son of the late Vincent and Pauline Recko Stasilowicz. He was a lifelong Southington resident, a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army and retired in 1980 from the Southington Board of Education, where he had been employed for many years. Stanley was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church and also enjoyed many years of gardening and growing orchids.
In addition to his wife, Betty, Stanley is survived by his two sisters, Mary Gladchuck and Jean Mihalko, both of Southington; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his three brothers, Walter, Vincent and Edward; and two sisters, Helen Gwiadowski and Lynore Stasilowicz.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, July 11, at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church. Burial will follow in Immaculate Conception Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. before Mass at the Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home, 975 South Main St., Plantsville.
William A. Warner
BRIDGEPORT -- William A. Warner, 75, of Bridgeport, beloved husband of Jean Donnelly Warner, died on Monday, July 8, 2002 in Bridgeport Hospital.
Born in Bridgeport, Mr. Warner was a lifelong area resident. He was a press operator for the Bridgeport Herald newspaper for 30 years before retiring, and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors beside his wife, include one son, James Wigglesworth of Bridgeport; two daughters, Lori Wigglesworth Stocking of Meriden and Kathleen Wigglesworth Stasiak of Maryland; and five grandchildren. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Kelly Zemper.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Thursday at 11 a.m. in The Larson Funeral Home, 2496 North Ave., Bridgeport. Interment will be private. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday. Knowlton H. White
HIGGANUM -- Knowlton H. White, 84, formerly of Meriden, died at his home on the Connecticut River in Higganum on Friday, June 28, 2002. Knowlton, generally called "Bob" by his friends and family, was married in 1939 to Dorothy (Peterson) White. She died in 1961.
He was the former owner and chief executive officer of Thompson Candy Company. A graduate of Tabor Academy, he received his undergraduate degree in engineering from Yale University cum laude, class of 1939. Knowlton served as a lieutenant commander in the Navy during World War II and later in life earned his masters degree in business administration from the University of Chicago.
Born in Meriden, Nov. 13, 1917, he was the son of Blanche (Hixson) Smith. She was the board chairman and editorial chairman of the Meriden Record Co., at the time of her death in 1974. Knowlton's father, Allan H. White, was associated with the family-owned Wilcox & White Company until he died in the 1919 flu epidemic at age 32. Prior to its dissolution in the 1920s, Wilcox & White, manufacturers of the Angelus player piano, was one of the largest employers in Meriden. Knowlton's older brother, Carter H. White, the former publisher of the Record-Journal died in 2000 and his half-brother, Wayne Carrington Smith Jr. died in 1948. He was also predeceased by his step-father, Wayne C. Smith.
He is survived by two daughters, Sarah Rogers of Greenwich and Virgilia Van Ness of Durango, Colo.; two sons, Jeffrey White of Sonoma, Calif., and Allan White of Malibu, Calif.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Knowlton was predeceased by a son, Carter, who died in Burbank, Calif., in 1996; and his second wife, Wynne Holden of Higganum, who died in 2000.
Interment at a family Cemetery in Guilford will be private. Arrangements for a gathering of friends and family in his honor will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions made be made in his name to the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association, 5 Brookside Drive, Wallingford, CT 06492.
Philomena Bertomeu
TAMPA, Fla. -- Philomena DeBaise Bertomeu, 94, of Tampa, Fla., formerly of Wallingford, passed away Sunday, July 7, 2002.
She is survived by four children; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; also by four sisters; six brothers; and several loving nieces and nephews.
Mary A. Castro
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Mary A. Castro, affectionately known as "Avozinha" by many of St. Michael's Azores, Portugal, entered into eternal peace on Wednesday, June 26, 2002 at Edward White Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla., at the age of 89. She was the widow of the late Joaquim Castro.
She was a resident of Wallingford for over 30 years, and was an accomplished clothing designer. She owned and operated her own business "Mary's House of Fashions" in Wallingford for 25 years. She was also a member of the Most Holy Trinity Church and the Ladies Guild. However, her greatest accomplishment was the affect that she had on the lives of everyone that she touched. Especially those of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a true mentor and matriarch. In 1980, she moved to St. Augustine, Fla., where she enjoyed her life. She was a member of the Cathedral Basilica and The Ladies Auxiliary. In 1996 she moved back to Bridgeport with her daughter, Eugenia Netto and her husband, Dan Netto. In 2001 they moved to Pinella's Park, Fla., and placed "Avozinha" in Gracewood Nursing Home, where she spent the final sad and lonely year of her life.
She is survived by two daughters, Aldeberta Fernandes of St. Augustine, Fla., Eugenia Netto and her husband, Dan Netto of Pinella's Park, Fla.; three grandchildren, Donna Gianotti and her husband, John, Jeffrey Fernandes and his wife, Donna, all of St. Augustine, Fla., and Daniel A. Netto and his wife, Sandra of Monroe; four great-grandchildren, Melissa Gianotti, Joshua Netto and Justine and Jocelyn Fernandes. Mary was predeceased by a son-in-law, Albert Fernandes; and two great-granddaughters, Ginelle Gianotti and Allessandra Netto.
International Association Mortuary was in charge and a catholic Mass was held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pinella's Park, Fla., on Wednesday, July 3. Arrangements are being made with Wallingford Funeral Home for Mary to join her husband, Joaquim Castro, in eternal rest in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Wallingford. Although Mary passed of natural causes anyone wishing to make a donation in her memory may do so by sending to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida Inc., 1955 US 1, South Suite D-3, St. Augustine, Fla. 32086.
Dorothy M. Chase
MERIDEN -- Dorothy Marie (Sabol Sniffen) Chase, 87, formerly of 22 Marlson Road, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002 at Elim Park in Cheshire following a lengthy illness. She was the wife of F. Luin Chase Sr.
She was born in Hartford, Dec. 11, 1914, daughter of the late Joseph and Bertina Coombs Sabol. The Sniffen family from Bridgeport adopted her. She moved to Meriden in 1932 and worked for the International Silver Company and then at the Meriden-Wallingford Hospital for 40 years as an L.P.N. She joined the Swedish Baptist Church, later the Park Ave. Baptist Church and was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church. She taught Sunday school for 40 years and served as a Deaconess. She was a pianist and an organist, a prolific knitter and she did ceramic work.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Arla and Richard Brandl of Meriden and Dorene Boisonneault of Meriden; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Franklin Luin and Joyce Chase Jr. of Meriden and Robert M. Chase of Meriden; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Helen Borkowski; and a brother, Joseph Sabol.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 13, at 4 p.m. at the Calvary Baptist Church, 262 Bee St., Meriden. The Rev. Joel Rissinger will officiate. Burial at Walnut Grove will be at the convenience of the family. Ezerla M. Collins
PORTLAND, Maine -- Ezerla M. Collins, 91, of Washington Ave., Portland died Tuesday, July 9, 2002 at a local nursing facility.
She was born in Jay, Maine, the daughter of Emmanuel and Alphoncine DuBois Muse. She attended schools in Jay and Livermore Falls graduating from Livermore Falls High School, class of 1928 where she was Captain of the Girls Basketball Team. She also graduated from Gray's Business College. Mrs. Collins was a resided in Athol, Mass., from 1942-1947, and later moved to Meriden, where she lived for 30 years working for Jepson Bookstore for several years. She moved to Portland in 1977 to be near her family. She was a communciant of St. Pius X Catholic Church.
She leaves her son Dennis, and his wife, Claire Collins of Freeport, Maine; four grandchildren, Kristin Wandland of Zebulon, N.C., Lee Deroucher of Lanexa, Va., Jennifer Collins of Portsmouth, N.H., Jonathan Collins of Harpers Ferry, West Va.; three nephews, Arthur Muse Jr. of Rumford, Maine, Robert Valliere of Lewiston, Maine, John Lynch of Meriden; and two nieces, Catherine Ledue of Meriden. She is predeceased by her husband George D. Collins in 1971.

MERIDEN -- Arvida Disereits, 80, of 124 S. Colony St., passed peacefully, Friday, July 5, 2002, at MidState Medical Center.
