Charles R. Walonoski
MERIDEN -- Charles Robert Walonoski, 81, husband of Marion (Gromala) Walonoski died Friday, June 21, 2002 at the MidState Medical Center in Meriden.
He was born in Plantsville, April 15, 1921, a son of the late Joseph and Louise (Butchowski) Walonoski. Mr. Walonoski attended Holcomb School and Lewis High School in Southington. Charles joined the National Guard in 1939 and became a member of the U.S. Army in 1941. He then saw active duty until July 1945 throughout the South Pacific including the battle for Guadalcanal, New Caledonia and the Philippines. Mr. Walonoski was employed by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in North Haven for over 12 years retiring in 1989. He also worked at Wallingford Steel and as an auto mechanic for several local auto dealerships. Mr. Walonoski was a longtime parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church. During his lifetime he enjoyed many hobbies including gardening, woodworking and oil painting.
Besides his beloved wife, Marion, he is survived by a son, Joseph J. Walonoski of New Fairfield; and four daughters, Ann Marie Zaborowski of Meriden, Marguerite Maurais of Middletown, Therese Ann Gillis of Plantsville and Rita Findley of Old Saybrook; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by five sisters; and a brother.
His funeral will be held Monday, June 24, at 9:15 a.m. from the Stempien Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Church. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, June 23, from 4 to 8 p.m.
John B. Backes
WALLINGFORD -- John B. (Jack) Backes, 72, of 188 Long Hill Road, and Key Colony Beach, Fla., died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at his home. He was the husband of Bette Ward Backes.
He was born in New Haven, Aug. 10, 1929, a son of the late Edward Bennett and Lois Merriman Backes. He attended Choate School in Wallingford and John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. Upon graduation he entered officer candidate school for the Navy, and then served aboard the U.S.S. Fitch as First Officer at the time of the Korean War. Upon his completion of military duties he returned to Wallingford to become President of Wallingford Auto Company where he worked his entire life. He was past president of the Wallingford Rotary Club and served on the boards of many community organizations.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, J. Christopher Backes and his wife, Robin Backes of East Haddam and Edward B. Backes and his wife, Caryl Frankenberger of Newport, R.I.; a sister, Barbara Bennett of Wallingford; a granddaughter, Corey E. Backes E. Backes; and two grandsons, Benjamin and Cameron Backes; two cousins, Joanne Backes and Sally Leighton; a niece, Susan Phipps; and a nephew, David North. He was predeceased by a first cousin, James B. Backes.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 27, at 10 a.m. at the First Congregational Church of Wallingford, 23 South Main St. Burial will be at In Memoriam Cemetery, Wallingford. Friends may call at the B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm Street on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. It is suggested that gifts in his memory be made to the Wallingford Rotary Foundation, P.O. Walter E. Beyer
MERIDEN -- Walter E. Beyer, 85, husband of Vilma Homich Beyer, died Saturday morning, June 22, 2002, at the Meriden Center after a lengthy illness.
Born in New Britain on Aug. 22, 1916, the son of the late Karl and Augusta Frank Beyer, he had lived in Meriden since 1938. Mr. Beyer attended New Britain schools and was a 1935 graduate of New Britain High School, and attended classes at Yale University and the University of Hartford in Industrial Engineering. He was employed by the Charles Parker Co. for 46 years as a superintendent in the Cabinet Division, retiring in 1978. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific for over 30 months. Before World War II, he served in Co. I, 169th Inf. CT National Guard-New Britain and attended officer school in Ft. Devens, Mass. Mr. Beyer was a member of the First Baptist Church, Meriden, served on many committees of the church, and was superintendent of Sunday School classes at the Church. He was a member of VFW Post #2097 and of the AARP.
Besides his wife, Vilma, of 32 years, he is survived a sister, Ida Lehmann of Vernon; a sister-in-law, Mary Homich of Meriden; also several nieces, nephews and grandnephews. He was predeceased by four sisters; and a brother.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday, June 25, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden with Rev. Robert Prescott-Ezickson of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial with military honors will be in St. Boniface Cemetery, Meriden. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 4 until 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the First Baptist Church, 460 Broad St., Meriden, CT 06450, or to the American Heart Assoc., 5 Brookside Drive, Wallingford, CT 06492.
Fiori Bianchi
WALLINGFORD -- Fiori Bianchi, 92, of 64 Southwind Apts., Wallingford, formerly of Northland, died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at the Skyview Health Care Ctr., Wallingford. He was the husband of the late Rita Marion Bianchi.
He was the owner of the former Bianchi's Hardware Store. He had served in the U.S. Army Air Corp as a chief line inspector for Airplane Repair in Fort Myers Airport, Avon bombing range and Tampa Bay Airport.
He was the brother of Josephine Schultz and Elvira Bethke, both of Wallingford; and the late Adele Venard, Emil and Fred Bianchi. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted in the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Ave., Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in Northford Cemetery. Ruth M. Grace
WALLINGFORD -- Ruth M. Grace, 87, wife of James A. Grace, of 2 Overlook Drive, died Saturday, June 22, 2002, at Yale-New Haven Hospital. She was born on Sept. 5, 1914, in Griswold, Conn., a daughter of the late Edward and Rose Deganduske Hanlon.
Mrs. Grace was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. She was a member of Meridian Chapter No. 8 O.E.S. in Meriden and had been a past matron and secretary for 28 years with the former Mizpah Chapter No. 37, O.E.S. She was also a member of the Mystic Chapter No. 20, O.E.S. in North Haven. She was a member of the Daughters of the Nile and was a 60-year member of the Wallingford Grange.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Dorette Daniels and her husband, Robert of Milford; two sons, Thomas Grace of Stratford, Vt. and Ronald Grace of Putnam, Conn.; two sisters, Barbara Lowe of Durham and Lois Barillaro of Trumbull; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Edna Gardner.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 25, at 11 a.m. at the B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 So. Elm St., Wallingford. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. An eastern Star service will be held on Monday at 7 p.m. Burial will be at In Memoriam Cemetery. Roland L. Holmes Sr.
WALLINGFORD -- Roland Lewis Holmes Sr., 95, of 528 North Main Street, died Saturday afternoon, June 22, 2002, at the MidState Medical Center in Meriden after a long illness. He was the husband of Genevieve Pilecki Holmes.
He was born in Bristol, Dec. 28, 1906, a son of the late Louis and Grace Sherman Holmes. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Navy Seebees. Until his retirement, he was executive director of the Wallingford Housing Authority. Under his direction the first elderly housing complex was constructed. Mr. Holmes was a communicant of Sts. Peter & Paul Church, Shaw-Sinon American Legion Post No. 73, and was a charter member of the Charter Oak Social Club, all of Wallingford.
In addition to his beloved wife, he leaves his loving family and beloved dog, Edy.
The funeral will leave the B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm Street, on Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. for a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at Saints Peter & Paul Church, 127 North Orchard Street, Wallingford. Burial will be at St. Stanislaus Cemetery

Esther D. Dighello
WALLINGFORD -- Esther DeMarco Dighello, 105, of Durham Road, Wallingford, died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at the MidState Medical Center in Meriden. She was the wife of the late Pasquale Dighello.
Born in New York City, March 2, 1897, she was a daughter of the late Victor and Theresa Valentinuzzi DeMarco, and was a lifelong Wallingford resident. She had been employed by the Wallace Silversmiths in Wallingford for 37 years until her retirement and was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church in Wallingford and a member of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Society of the parish.
She is survived by her daughter, Velma D. (Mrs. Vincent R.) Zolkiewicz, with whom she resided, of Wallingford; her granddaughter, Lisa Zolkiewicz-Ives, of Wallingford, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by four brothers, Frank, Henry, John and Louis DeMarco.
Her family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street, Ext., Wallingford, Wednesday, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday, at 9:30 a.m. from the Wallingford Funeral Home, when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery

Joseph J. Hoag
WALLINGFORD -- Joseph J. Hoag, 81, of 11 Woodland Drive, died Sunday, June 23, 2002 at the MidState Medical Center in Meriden. He was the beloved husband of Bertha Bever Hoag. Born on July 22, 1920 in Pittston, PA, son of the late John and Nora Belle Hoag.
A veteran of World War ll, he served in the 101st Airborne and the Army Corps of Engineers in the European theatre from 1940 - 1945. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion in Wallingford. Mr. Hoag was employed by Cytec Industries in Wallingford for 35 years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, Thomas and Stephen, daughter-in-law, Ann all of Wallingford, brothers, John Francis Hoag and James Hoag both of Pittston, PA and Harry Hoag of Pensacola, FL, and granddaughters, Kathleen and Maureen Hoag.
A private graveside service will be held on Wednesday, June 26, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. at the In Memoriam Cemetery, Wallingford. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in the name of Joseph Hoag to the Wallingford Senior Citizens Center, 238 Washington Street, Wallingford, CT 06492. The B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm St., Wallingford is in charge of arrangements.
Paulette I. Landry
WALLINGFORD -- Paulette I. Caubriere Landry, 76, of Elmwood Road, Wallingford, died Saturday, June 22, 2002, at the MidState Medical Center in Meriden. She was the beloved wife of 57 years, of Benoit "Ben" Landry.
Born in Tourlaville, Normandie, France, September 7, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Gustave and Isabelle Roupsard Caubriere, she had been a Wallingford resident for 50 years. She was a member of the Good News Christian Center in Wallingford.
Besides her beloved husband Ben, she is survived by three daughters, Linda Verbickas of Thomaston, Christine Brunette of North Port, FL, and Jeanne Gianotti of Wallingford, her three sons, Michael Landry, of Wallingford, Paul Landry, of SW Lakewood, Washington , and James Landry, of Wallingford, 8 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers.
