Irving W. Willey

BELFAST, Maine -- Belfast- Irving William Willey, 94, went to be with our Lord on Wednesday, June 19,2002.

Irving was residing at Harbor Hill Health Care Community, Belfast for the past three years after moving from Union, Maine. Irving was born in Beddington, Maine on Feb. 9, 1908, the son of Alice Gaynall Small Willey and William R. Willey. Irving was a direct descendant of lchabod B. Willey, the founder of Cherryfield, Maine. Irving was married to Ethelyn Lousie Ginn on Dec. 7, 1929 in Southwest Harbor, Maine where they resided for many years. Irving worked on the wharf in Manset and for a grocery store before starting a business traveling from Southwest Harbor to the Bucksport area selling fish during the depression. At the beginning of World War II, they moved to South Portland where Irving worked for the shipyard during the war years. Irving then opened his own Mobil gasoline station in Cape Elizabeth. Irving won many awards during his 15 years with Mobil for the excellent service and volume. Irving always went above and beyond the call of duty for his customers including driving a doctor into a Portland hospital to deliver a baby during a very bad blizzard. Irving became a second "father" to several young men that he employed and guided during their youth. He continued to hear from them all during his life. Irving's greatest pleasures in life were his wife, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was always involved in all their endeavors and he supported all that they did. He was a totally devoted family man. In 1964, Irving and Ethelyn moved to Meriden, to work for Carabetta Bros., Inc. Irving was superintendent for an eighty apartment complex and soon rose to be the supervisor of operations of all Carabetta's apartment complexes which totaled over 5000. To the end of his life, Irving would hear from the Carabetta brothers with numerous personal visits that Irving treasured. Joe Carabetta called Irving, "Pop". In 1975, Irving retired and moved to Union, Maine where he was called upon to work for B. M. Clark Co., Inc. Union, Maine, on three separate occasions. Each time he retired, he was called back to work - finally retiring at the age of 78 years old. During his early retirement, Irving enjoyed his vegetable garden and grew the best potatoes around. With the excess vegetables, Irving displayed them on a table in front of his house with a sign saying "Free". When his wife, Ethelyn, became ill, Irving devoted himself to her care. He personally cared for her in their home for 2 1/2 years until her death Aug. 17, 1993. Irving was a member of the Peoples Methodist Church of Union, the Senior Citizens Club and the Methodist Men's Club. He held many offices for each and was very involved. He could be depended upon to carry out any task the clubs needed. Even after he was unable to drive, he would make the many telephone calls needed for the clubs and the prayer chain. Irving was a true Christian and tried daily to live his Methodist faith. Irving and Ethelyn lived in the senior citizens apartments in Union for over 10 years where Irving became the "ambassador" of the apartment complex and fixed small things for each tenant. He would make sure that sick friends were safely tucked into bed at night. On the Senior Citizens Club bus trips, Irving could always be counted on to entertain all with his stories and jokes. He had a very large book filled with all kinds of stories and jokes to suit all occasions. Irving's entire family and friends have many wonderful memories of all that Irving has done: such as playing "horseshoes, being the neighborhood champion on the pogo stick, lobster feeds, grandchildren eating over, helping to perform a grandson's wedding, and participating in several funerals of family members. These are just a few of the terrific memories all have of Irving. Irving and Ethelyn were able to travel wherever family members were: California, Texas , Missouri, Illinois, Penn., New York and Florida. They also traveled with the Carabetta brothers to Puerto Rico and Jamaica. In September 1999, Irving moved to Harbor Hill Health Care Community in Belfast and quickly became the welcoming committee for new residents and gave spiritual guidance to all. Irving was the unofficial "minister" giving grace at each meal. Many friends visited him during his stay at Harbor Hill. Irving had a very special roommate at Harbor Hill, Wallace Hutchins who passed away in April. They took care of each other with respect and love.

Irving has gone to join his wife of 63 years, Ethelyn; his two brothers, Guilford Willey (1980) of Southwest Harbor, Maine, Lewis Willey (1978) of Vernon; one sister, Hazel Willey (1918) of Cherryfield, Maine; and a granddaughter, Kristen Rebstock Caponigro (2000) of Meriden; Irving is survived by two sons, Everett I. Willey and his friend, Marie Elder, of Windham, Maine and Wendall A. Willey of Long Beach, Calif.; three daughters, Eleanor A. Buxton and her husband, Raymond of St. George, Maine, Marcia E. Soule and her companion, Bliss Fuller of Union, Maine and Suzanne D. Clark and her husband, Randall, of Union, Maine; also surviving are seven grandchildren, Wayne Willey of Lubbock, Texas , Gregory Willey of Windham, Maine, Cynthia Maiden and David Willey of Long Beach, Calif., Katherine Ames of Warren, Maine, Kevin Soule of Union, Maine and Robert Rebstock Jr. of Meriden; Irving had 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter as well as numerous "adopted" great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews. Many loving friends and the supportive caregivers at Harbor Hill Health Care Community also survive Irving.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, June 24, at the Peoples Methodist Church, Union, Maine with burial immediately after at Lakeview Cemetery. There will be a gathering to honor Irving's life at the Masonic Hall, Sennebec Rd., Union following burial.
