Anthony Scinto
MERIDEN -- Mr. Anthony Scinto, 99, of 126 Lewis Ave., died Friday, May 24, 2002 at the Meriden Center. He was the husband of the late Marie A. Scinto.
Mr. Scinto was born in New York state on Dec. 29, 1902, a son of the late Lorenzo and Lorenza (Cornacchia) Scinto.
He is survived by many nieces and nephews, including John Dellicicchi of Duxbury, Mass.
Private services and burial were held in the New St. Francis Cemetery
in Torrington. The Gleeson Mortuary of Torrington was in charge of arrangements.
James L. Thomas
MERIDEN -- James L. Thomas, 89, of Meriden, passed away Tuesday, June 4, 2002. He was the husband of the late Petrina M. Vitale Thomas.
Born in New Haven, Nov. 4, 1912, a son of the late Luca and Madalena Giannotti Tommaso, he was a Meriden resident for the past 12 years. He had been employed by the Avco Lycoming Co., in Stratford until his retirement several years ago. His loving and generous heart will always be a source of strength and comfort to all who knew him.
Mr. Thomas is survived by his three daughters and son-in-law, Priscilla A. Thomas of Meriden, Patricia and Jonathan Carter of Durham and June S. Thomas of Meriden, with whom he resided; a brother, John Tommaso of Iverness, Fla.; seven grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Lena Santore; and two brothers, Louis Tommaso and Joseph Thomas.
His family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wallingford Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in the Wallingford Funeral Home. Interment will be in All Saints Cemetery
in North Haven.
Lorretta R. Vaughn
MERIDEN -- Lorretta R. Vaughn, 89, of 42 Carriage Drive died Tuesday, June 4, 2002 in Yale New Haven Hospital.
Born and educated in Northampton, Mass., she was a graduate of Northampton High School. While in Northampton, she was active in politics as secretary-treasurer for Ward 6 Democratic Committee. Lorretta was a former secretary to the Northampton Democratic City Committee, and a member of Women on Wheel, a Democratic Woman's Committee in Western Mass. She was an employee of Pratt and Whitney Aircraft of North Haven, retiring in 1976.
She is survived by her husband, Bernard Vaughn; a son, John Vaughn of Manassas, Va.; a daughter, Barbara Fontana of Chevy Chase, Md.; Lorretta leaves grandchildren, Lauren Trono, John J. Vaughn, Gregory J. Fontana and Paul T. Fontana.
Funeral will be Friday at 12 p.m. from the O'Connell Funeral Home, 95 King St., Northampton, followed by a Mass at 1 p.m. in Annunciation Church. Burial in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Friday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Contributions to the Alzheimer's Disease Assoc., P.O. 2873, Springfield, Mass 01101.
Frederick A. Verdick
MIDDLETOWN -- Frederick A. Verdick, 85, of 4-1 Canterbury Court, Middletown, husband of Mary (Peyton) Verdick, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002 at Middlesex Hospital after a long illness.
Born in Providence, R.I., on Aug. 8, 1916, he was the son of the late Frederick and Christina (Nielsen) Verdick. Mr. Verdick attended Cranston, R.I., schools and was a graduate of Bryant College. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a first lieutenant in the European Theater, 45th Division, for two and a half years, and was among the first Americans to liberate Dachau concentration camp. He was a registered jeweler, owning and operating Elliott's Jewelers in Meriden for over 40 years, retiring in 1994. He was a director of the Chamber of Commerce; past president of the Retail Trade Board; and a member of the Home Club, all of Meriden.
Besides his wife of 59 years, he is survived by one son, Frederick P. Verdick of Meriden; two grandchildren, Christian and Jennifer; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at the Church of The Holy Trinity, 381 Main St., Middletown, Saturday, June 8, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Margaret H. Minnick, rector will officiate. There are no calling hours. Doolittle Funeral Service, 14 Old Church St., Middletown, is in charge of arrangements.
Elizabeth A. Becroft
MADISON -- Elizabeth Ann (Alix) Becroft, 69, of Madison, wife of devoted husband, Donald Becroft, died on Thursday, June 6, 2002 after a lengthy illness.
Born in Meriden, she was employed for the Urology Assoc., of Meriden and retired from the Fosdick Corp. Betty has touched many lives with her wit and candor. She was greatly loved and will be truly missed.
Besides her husband, she is survived by one son, Dale Becroft and his wife, Robin of Wallingford; three daughters, Kathleen Pajor and her husband, Frank of Lazume, Pa., Kim Wagner and her husband, William of Bristol and Arleen Hettrick and her husband, Fred of Madison; seven grandchildren, Kevin, Holly, Joshua, Alix, Emma, Gillian and Daniel; two brothers, Raymond and Robert Alix, both of Meriden; and two sisters, Frances Conroy and Mary Nugent, both of Meriden; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter, Deborah Becroft; a brother, Leo Alix; and two sisters, Yvonne Cassidy and Nellie Evarts.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 8, at 10 a.m. at the Swan Funeral Home, 825 Boston Post Road, Madison. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Betty's memory to the CT Hospice, 100 double Beach Road, Branford, CT 06405.
Adolph J. Billings Sr.
MERIDEN -- Adolph J. Billings Sr., 82, husband of Ellen J. Dehnel Billings of 1112 Old Colony Road, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002 at the Tandem Health Care of Southington.
He was born in Meriden, Dec. 13, 1919, a son of the late John and Anna Topar Billings. Mr. Billings was a lifelong resident of Meriden and was educated in local schools. He retired from Cuno after 43 years of service. Mr. Billings was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Coast Guard. He was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church, a member of the American Legion Post 45, and the Meriden Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jane and Joseph Petro of the Plantsville section of Southington; three sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Carol Billings of Wallingford, Adolph (Al) and Janet Billings Jr. of Highland Park, Ill and Timothy and Nancy Billings of Meriden; two brothers, Robert Billings of Meriden and John Billings of Prospect; two aunts, Helen Custy and Lola Topar, both of Meriden; 10 grandchildren; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two daughters, Ann Marie and Diane Marie Billings; two brothers, Daniel and Alfred Billings.
His funeral will be held Saturday, June 8, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Church. Burial with military honors will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. His family will receive relatives and friends in the Stempien Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden, Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Mr. Billings family respectfully requests donations be made in the form of contributions to the St. Stanislaus School Endowment Fund, 81 Akron St., Meriden, CT 06450.
Tommaso Pandolfo
MERIDEN -- Tommaso Pandolfo, 74, of 20 Wood St., died Thursday, June 6, 2002 at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband for 50 years of Vincenza (Vecchio) Pandolfo.
Born in Italy on Oct. 13, 1927, the son of the late Constantino and Michelina (DeMarco) Pandolfo. Mr. Pandolfo was a self-employed Mason retiring 15 years ago.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his loving children, Michelina and her husband, Anthony DiStasio, Carmela and her husband, Amato Salzillo, all of Southington; Constantino Pandolfo of Meriden and Joanne Pandolfo of Southington; his very special grandchildren, Pasquale and Maria DiStasio and Giovianna Salzillo; two brothers, Franceso and Carlo Pandolfo, both of Italy; several nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law.
The funeral will be held on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington to St. Aloysius Church, 254 Burritt St., Plantsville at 10 a.m. for a Mass. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. The family would like to thank the staff of Hospice of Central CT, CT Hospice and MidState Hospital for their all caring help.
Alberta Saindon
MERIDEN -- Alberta Saindon, 84, of 176 Pratt St., wife of the late George Saindon, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002 at MidState Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born in New Brunswick, Canada on March 10, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Ragina (D'Amour) Oakes. She had resided in New Brunswick, moving to Meriden in 1965, and had attended schools in New Brunswick. She was a parishioner of St. Laurent Church.
She is survived by five daughters, Lucille Veilleux and Gisele Galloza, both of Meriden, Nicole Fernandez of Spain, Lisa Lacroix of Quebec and Susan Saindon of Meriden; two sons, Gerard J. Saindon and Peter Saindon, both of Southington; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alice and Jeannette; two brothers, Rene' and Andre'; also several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held on Monday, June 10, at 9:15 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden and at 10 a.m. in St. Laurent Church. Burial will be in St. Laurent Cemetery. Elizabeth E. Slie
WALLINGFORD -- Elizabeth Emma Slie, 79, of 104 1/2 Cheshire Road, died Thursday, June 6, 2002 at her home. She was the wife of the late Raymond T. Slie Sr.
She was born in Wallingford, Jan. 12, 1923, a daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Szekunda. Until her retirement, she was payroll clerk at H.L. Judd Company. Mrs. Slie was a life long resident of Wallingford and a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church. She was a member of A.A.R.P.
She is survived by a niece, Elinor Szekunda and a nephew, Raymond Szekunda both of Long Beach, Calif.; a step-son and daughter-in-law, James R and Donna S. Slie Sr. of Wallingford. She was predeceased by a step-son, Raymond T. Slie Jr.; and a step-daughter, Patricia Ann Richard.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of the B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm St. Burial will be at St. John's Cemetery, Wallingford.
