Frank F. Riccio Jr.
MERIDEN -- Frank F. Riccio Jr., 88, of 845 Paddock Ave., died Friday, May 31, 2002 in the Meriden Care Center. She was the husband of the late Elizabeth DiGuilio Riccio.
He was born in New Haven, Dec. 26, 1913, a son of the late Frank F. and Susan Simeone Riccio Sr. He was raised and educated in New Haven. He was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He had owned and operated the Texaco Gas Station in Tracy until his retirement in 1965. While in Tracy he was the Chief of the Tracy Volunteer Fire Department, also he and his wife were active with the Silver Squares, Square Dance Club of Meriden. Afterwards they moved to Bantam Lake, where he was active in the Litchfield Senior Citizens. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating. In 1995 they returned to the area moving into the Hanover Towers, Meriden.
He is survived by his devoted brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Catherine Riccio of Wallingford; also a sister-in-law, Mrs. Louis "Dorothy" Riccio of Wallingford; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four brothers, John, George, Louis and Edward Riccio; and two sisters, Florence Ingraham and Lillian Trzciensky.
His funeral will be held Wednesday, June 5, with visitation at 8:45 a.m. in the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Meriden with his Mass of Christian burial in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 9:45 a.m. He will be interred with military honors in Walnut Grove Cemetery.
Joanne R. Zabel
MERIDEN -- Joanne Ruth (Buttner) Zabel, a beloved mother, sister and daughter left us Monday, June 3, 2002 for her final resting place.
Mrs. Zabel was a lifelong Meriden native who worked for the City of Meriden and later Aetna, where she retired in 1995. She was a deeply spiritual person and a member of the Baha' i Faith. She passed away from a brief illness at Meriden Nursing Home. The family is very appreciative of the care and compassion she received from the dedicated staff of this facility.
She is survived by her mother, Ruth Buttner Sharar of Washington State; six children, Patty Zabel of Meriden, Herbert Zabel of South Meriden, Cindy McFadzen of Florida, Matthew Zabel of South Meriden, William Zabel of Southington and Joanne Edwards of Meriden; a sister, Marybeth Hall of East Hartford; four grandchildren, Christina McFadzen, Alisha Jones, Katie Zabel and Jay Zabel; and a great-grandchild, Nicholas Jones.
Funeral services will be held at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5. There will be a Baha' i, graveside service immediately following in Walnut Grove Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
Marian Brown
SOUTHINGTON -- Marian (Wickel) Brown, 87, of 27 Oakland Road died Sunday, June 2, 2002 at Southington Care Center after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Shorey Brown.
Marian was born on Feb. 19, 1915 in Reading, Pa., daughter of the late Harry and Bessie (Schoener). She was a member of the First Congregational Church and was active with the "Morning" Group.
She is survived by her daughter, Meredith B. and her husband, Alan P. Dubin, along with granddaughter, Elizabeth Dubin Hug and her husband, Shihab Hug, all of California; a sister. Barbara "Sis" Braun and her husband. James R. Braun and niece, Elizabeth Braun Brouillard, all of Southington; she also leaves several sister-in-laws, brother -in-laws, nieces, nephews and close friends.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 7, at the First Congregational Church, 37 Main St. Burial will be at the convenience of the family and there are no calling hours. Donations may be made in her memory to the First Congregational Church.
Ronald A. Gagnon
WALLINGFORD -- Ronald A. Gagnon, 69, beloved husband of Mary A. Morganti Gagnon, of North Elm St., Wallingford, passed away, Tuesday, June 4, 2002.
Born in Manchester, N.H., Dec. 5, 1932, he was a son of the late Lionel and Rose Courchesne Gagnon, and had been a Wallingford resident for many years. He was employed by the C. N. Flagg, Company of Meriden for over 30 years until his retirement in 1986, and a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Gagnon was a member of the Plumbers Pipefitters Retirees Local 777, the American Legion Shaw Sinon Post No. 73 of Wallingford, and a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church in Wallingford.
Besides his beloved wife, Mary, he is survived by his daughter, Michelle B. Gagnon, of South Windsor; his two sons and daughters-in-law, Stuart R. Gagnon and Karen E. Lange, of Takoma Park, Md., and Tech SGT Brian L. Gagnon, USAF and June Gagnon, of Abilene, Texas ; his seven grandchildren, Brittany, Heather, Cori, Daniel, Benjamin, Jeremy and Luke; two great-grandchildren; his brother and sister-in-law, Roger E. and Claire Gagnon, of Manchester, N.H.; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jennie Horkavy, Sam and Fran Morganti, and Lois Morganti, all of Wallingford, John and Mary Morganti, of Metairie, La., Rose Blakeslee, of North Haven and Angelo and Christiane Morganti of Yalesville; and many nieces and nephews.
His family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St., Ext., Wallingford, Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. from the Wallingford Funeral Home, when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery

Jonathan Mangsen Sr.
FITCHBURG, Mass. -- Jonathan J. Mangsen Sr., 47, of 169 Pratt Road, an electronic technician, died Friday, May 24, 2002 in UMass Memorial Center -- University Campus, Worcester.
He leaves a son, Jonathan J. Mangsen Jr. of Fitchburg, Mass.; a daughter, Erin M. Mangsen of Wallingford; his parents, David E. and Evelyn T. (Perry) Mangsen of Orlando, Fla.; two brothers, Christopher D. and Michael A. Mangsen, both of Florida; four sisters, Kate Huard, Sheila R. Gauvin and Diana L. Mangsen, all of Massachusetts, and Stephanie L. Forbiss of North Carolina; his former wife, Catherine M. (Phelan) Mangsen of Wallingford; a brother, Scott Mangsen died in 1965.
He was born in Shirley, Mass., and graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1972. He served with the Army in Korea during peacetime. Mr. Mangsen was an electronic technician for Qualex Photo Finishing Co., Marlboro. He enjoying cars, music and playing guitar.
The funeral was held May 31, from Nordgren Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln St., Worcester with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Joan of Arc Church, 570 Lincoln St., Worcester, Mass. Burial was in St. John's Cemetery, Worcester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, Massachusetts Chapter, Chatham Center, Suite 450, 29 Crafts St., Newton, Mass 02160.
Bertha Dashukewich
SOUTHINGTON -- Bertha Bitel Dashukewich, 98, formerly of Vermont Court in Southington, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002 at Westfield Care and Rehab Center in Meriden. She was the widow of Vincent Dashukewich.
Born Feb. 14, 1904 in Brooklyn, N.Y., Bertha had been a Southington resident for the past 80 years. She was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church, where she was also a member of the Rosary Society.
She is survived by her son, Matthew Dashukewich of Cheshire; her three daughters, Marion Cotrone of Meriden, Helen Mandzik of Alaska and Margaret Grant of East Haddam; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son, Frank; and her daughter, Dorothy.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday, June 8, at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church. Burial will follow in Immaculate Conception Cemetery. Calling hours are Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home, 975 South Main St., Plantsville.
Leonard Gerardi
MERIDEN -- Leonard Gerardi, 75, of Meriden, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002 at MidState Medical Center following a long illness.
He was born Nov. 11, 1926 in Stamford, a son of the late William and Mary (Pace) Gerardi. His father was President and CEO of the Bank of America in New York. He was a resident of the Greenwich area for many years, and his family was very proud of their Italian heritage.
He is survived by his only living family member, Gerard Gerardi of Greenwich. He was predeceased by his twin brother; and two sisters.
A private graveside service took place in Meriden with Fr. Salvatore Cerasale of Greenwich. The Szymaszek-Taylor Funeral Home, 189 E. Main St., Meriden has charge of arrangements.
John J. Huska
TORRINGTON -- John J. Huska, 89 of 24 Willow Gardens died Tuesday, June 4, 2002 at the Haven Health Center of Torrington. He was the husband of the late Anna Symonaitis Huska.
Mr. Huska was born in Strba, Czechoslovakia, March 20, 1913, son of the late John and Mary Kazar Huska. He and his wife immigrated to the United States and to Torrington in 1916. Through the years he had worked for General Time, The Hayden Manufacturing Co., The Torrington Manufacturing Co., The Union Hardware, Co., and New Departure. In his retirement, he was a crossing guard. He was an avid bowler and was a member of several senior bowling leagues. He was a member of The Connecticut State Guard from 1940 to 1945.
He is survived by one son, Richard Huska of Escondito, Calif.; two daughters, Shirley Mahffy of Southington and Mary Ann Huska of Winsted; one sister, Wilma Huska of San Diego, Calif.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Friday at 9:45 a.m. from the Driscoll Mortuary, 138 Migeon Ave., to St. Francis Church for a Mass of Christian burial at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. Francis New Cemetery
with military honors.
Dorothy R. Murphy
MERIDEN -- Dorothy R. Murphy, 87, formerly of 80 Hanover St., died Tuesday, June 4, 2002 at Maple View Manor in Rocky Hill. She was the wife of the late Joseph E. Murphy.
Born in Meriden on April 23, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Vera Coats Reynolds. She was a graduate of St. Francis School of Nursing in Hartford and was employed as a nurse at Meriden Nursing Home. She was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church and was a frequent traveler and a Vista volunteer.
She is survived by two daughters, Donna M. Iwanski of Durham and Rosemary Glorioso of South Meriden; two sons, Terence J. Murphy of South Meriden and Alan B. Murphy of Middletown; two brothers, Lawrence Reynolds and Charles Reynolds, both of Spring Hill, Fla.; a sister, Sheila Smith of Kentucky; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in the Mausoleum in Sacred Heart Cemetery. The Rev. Robert Roy will officiate. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call Friday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Beecher & Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden.
