Betty J. Fisher, 96, had operated dress business
Betty J. Fisher, 96, formerly of New York City, died Sept. 20, 2000 at New Milford Nursing Home. She was the widow of Rudolph Fisher.
Mrs. Fisher was born in Rorschach, Switzerland, May 4, 1904, a daughter of Edmund and Johanna Weber.
She moved to New York City in 1924 and owned and operated her own dress manufacturing and design business. She worked with fashion magazines and fashion houses in the United States and in Paris.
Mrs. Fisher retired to Connecticut in 1989.
She is survived by two daughters, Suzanne Scott of Brookfield and Rosemarie Burkhardt of Gaylordsville; four grandchildren, Suzette Berger of Gaylordsville, Michelle Murphy of Avon, John Burkhardt of North Brookfield, Mass., Kristen
Krate of Danbury; seven great-grandchildren; and a niece in Munich, Germany. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Deborah Ann Burkhardt of Gaylordsville.
A memorial service will take place tomorrow (Saturday) at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Route 341, Kent.
Alvah Mulherin, 81, was active in Washington
Alvah Edward Mulherin, 81, of 39 River Road, Washington , died Sept. 14, 2000 at his home after a long illness. He was the husband of Marguerite (Cavanaugh) Mulherin.
Mr. Mulherin was born March 10, 1919, in Grand Falls, New Brunswick, son of the late Patrick and Emma (Albert) Mulherin.
He was an Army veteran of World War II and a longtime resident of Washington , where he worked as a bartender at the former Shepaug Club.
He later worked as a carpenter for Sherwood Johnson. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Washington .
Mr. Mulherin was a member of Housatonic Council No. 40 of the Knights of Columbus of New Milford, a life member of the Washington Volunteer Fire Department and a charter member of Gage-Zumpf Post No. 87 American Legion of Washington .
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Arthur of Washington ; a brother, Thomas of New Hampshire; three sisters, Lucy Krul of Maine and Brenda Mulherin and Patricia Seidler of New Hampshire; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Sorak.

Eleanor Vallombroso, 81, mother of local teacher
Eleanor Vallombroso, 81, of 265 St. John St., New Haven, died Sept. 14, 2000 at her home after a long illness. She was the wife of Anthony Vallombroso.
Mrs. Vallombroso was born in New Haven Feb. 21, 1919, a daughter of the late Antonio and Raffaela (Vissicchio) Polio.
She had worked as a seamstress with the former Mode Dress Co. in New Haven and as a drapery maker with Bullard’s of New Haven.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Vallombroso is survived by a daughter, New Milford schoolteacher Ann Marie of New Milford; a son, Anthony M. of Old Lyme; a sister, Mary J. Leone of California; two brothers, James V. Polio of New Haven and Salvatore C. Polio of Hamden; and a granddaughter, Stephanie Vallombroso. She was predeceased by two sisters, Anna J. Polio and Rose Anastasio; and five brothers, Marshall, Alphonse, John, Frank and Anthony Polio.

Ida Carlson, 95, had worked at training school
Ida (Stuart) Carlson, 95, formerly of Stuart Road East, Bridgewater, died Sept. 17, 2000 at the New Milford Nursing Home after a long illness. She was the wife of the late Charles E. Carlson.
Mrs. Carlson was born Dec. 16, 1904, in Little Neck, Long Island, N.Y., a daughter of the late John and Grace (Royce) Stuart.
She had been employed for 23 years as an attendant at Southbury Training School before her retirement.
She was a parishioner of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Bridgewater and was also a member of the AARP.
Mrs. Carlson is survived by a son, Stuart E. Welwood of Brooks, Maine; a daughter, Cynthia A. Burden of Bridgewater; a sister, Florence L. Guertler of Jupiter, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Sylvia E. Devine.

June E. Bierce, 76, mother of New Milford man
June E. Bierce, 76, of 1847 Norfolk Road, Torrington, died Sept. 15, 2000 at New Milford Hospital. She was the widow of Alexander E. Bierce.
Mrs. Bierce was born June 21, 1924, in Philadelphia, daughter of the late David and Elizabeth (Cummings) Galbraith.
She is survived by a son, Raymond Holm of New Milford; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Alma T. Payne, 83, mother of New Milfordite
Alma T. Payne, 83, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., and formerly of the Bethel and Danbury area, died Sept. 15, 2000 at Westwood Hill Care Center.
She was the widow of O’Dell Wells, whom she married Oct. 30, 1933, and the widow of Foster E. Payne, whom she married Dec. 26, 1939.
Mrs. Payne was born Feb. 28, 1917, in Broseley, Mo., a daughter of the late Thomas M. and Peyton M. (Mariah) Talley.
She retired from the Sample Shoe Store, where she worked from 1951 to 1959. She attended the Midland St. Baptist Church and enjoyed quilting, sewing and traveling.
Mrs. Payne is survived by four sons, Charles Wells of New Milford, Floyd Payne and his wife, Kathy, of Poplar Bluff, Richard Payne and his wife, Pudge, of Mt. Vernon, Mo., and Jimmie Earl Payne and his wife, Rosemary, of Bethel; a daughter, Christine Johnson of Poplar Bluff; a brother, Coy Talley of Peoria, Ill.; a sister, Geneva Francis of Poplar Bluff; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son Thomas Payne.

Carol Weisner, 55, was a New Milford resident
Carol F. Weisner, 55, of Old Orchard Lane, New Milford, formerly of Millerton, N.Y., died Sept. 12, 2000 at New Milford Hospital. She was the wife of William Weisner.
Mrs. Weisner was born June 19, 1945, in White Plains, N.Y., daughter of the late Ralph and Lucy (Longo) Azzrello.
She attended Yorktown Heights High School in New York. After moving to Connecticut, she worked at Grand Union Supermarket.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, William III of Pine Plains, N.Y.; two daughters, Hope Ingham of New Milford and Nancy Weisner; and two grandchildren.

Gerald Dabbs, 83, was father of New Milfordite
Gerald William Dabbs, 83, of Forest View Road, Northford, died Sept. 19, 2000. He was the husband of Goldia Piper Dabbs.
Mr. Dabbs was born in Proctor, Vt., Feb. 16, 1917, the son of the late George M. and Mabel (Morgenson) Dabbs.
He was a graduate of RPI in Troy, N.Y., and served in the United States Naval Seabees as a lieutenant.
He had a diverse career over the years, encompassing that of track supervisor for the Pennsylvania Railroad, civil engineer with the American Cyanamid Co. of Wallingford, and most recently, prior to his retirement in 1980, the Wallingford town engineer.
Mr. Dabbs was an avid model railroader. He was one of the first constables for the town of North Branford before a police department was established. He was also a charter member of the Northford Volunteer Fire Department, Co. No. 2.
Besides his wife of 59 years, he is survived by two daughters, Goldia (Tootsie) Vargas of Guilford and Hansine (Hans) Sauer of New Milford; a son, Peter Dabbs of Guilford; a brother, George M. Dabbs of Trumbull; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Gerald W. Dabbs Jr., and a sister, Margaret P. Dabbs.
Private funeral services will be conducted by the North Haven Funeral Home.

Stephanie Carroccio, 80, leaves family in New Milford
Stephanie M. Carroccio, 80, of West Palm Beach, Fla., died peacefully at her home Sept. 16, 2000. She was the widow of Paul Carroccio Sr.
Mrs. Carroccio was born in New York City Aug. 16, 1920, a daughter of Maria (Clemenza) and Rocco Catania.
After her husband’s death in 1965, she was employed by the Homequity Corp. until she retired to Florida in 1984.
Mrs. Carroccio is survived by a daughter, Josephine of Greenacres, Fla.; two sons, Paul T. and his wife, Carol, and Anthony and his wife, Roberta, of Bondville, Vt.; six grandchildren, Christian of Danbury, Paul S. and Michelle of New Milford, Amy of Nashua, N.H., Paul W. of Lafayette, Ind., and Thomas Gannon of Brooksville, Fla.; a great-granddaughter, Ashley of New Milford; two sisters, Maria Russo Judermanns and Rose Bannon; a niece, Marilyn Bauer; and many other nieces and nephews.
