Vernice L. Moser

NESCOPECK, Pa. -- Vernice L. Moser, 72, of Ridge Road, Nescopeck, Pa., died Thursday, April 18, 2002, at the home of her daughter, Sherry.

Born in Meriden, Oct. 21, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Louise Nagel Rushworth. In 1947, she graduated with distinguished honors from Meriden High School. For 17 years, she had been a day care teacher at Columbia-Montour Day Care Center, Bloomsburg. She enjoyed sewing, craft making and being with her family.

She is survived by five children, Daniel Moser of Nescopeck, Pa., Bruce Moser of Berwick, Pa., Mrs. Don (Susan) Ruhmel R.D. of Berwick, Mrs. Doyle (Sherry) Henrie R.D., Nescopeck, Pa., and Nancy Travelpiece of Beach Haven, Pa.;10 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald Moser, on Oct. 31, 1985.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the Heller Funeral Home, Nescopeck with the Rev. Gerald L. Wiggen, pastor of Faith Bible Church, R.R. No. 2, Berwick, Pa., officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Berwick, Pa. Calling hours 12 to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Stephen C. Weitzel

MERIDEN -- Stephen C. Weitzel, 94, of 94 Forest Ave., Meriden died Thursday, April 18, 2002, at the Meriden Nursing Home. He was the husband of Olive Swatkins Weitzel.

He was born in Meriden, June 22, 1908, son of the late William Beatrice Sheldon Weitzel. Mr. Weitzel was the manager of the Home Club of Meriden, prior to his retirement in 1973 after 42 years of service. He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, Meriden and the Masonic Lodge No. 77, AF & AM and the U.S. Power Squadron as a Instructor.

He is survived by a daughter, Charlotte Stabach and her husband, Stephen Stabach Jr. of Wallingford; an "Adopted" daughter, June Kupfer of Meriden; three grandchildren, Stephen Stabach of Wallingford, Susan Vilardo and her husband, Gregory of East Hampton and Gregory Stabach of Medford, Ore.; and one great-grandson, Gregory Vilardo; also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Walter Weitzel and Frederick Weitzel.

Funeral service will be held Monday, April 22, at 11 a.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church. Interment will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Friends may call Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Beecher & Bennett-Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. In lieu of flowers, contributions made be made to the charity of one's choice.

Basil A. Farmer

LUBEC, Maine -- Basil (Base) A. Farmer, 64, formerly of Meriden, died April 18, 2002, at a Bangor Hospital.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Sunday at the Christian Temple Church, Lubec. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday from the church, with Pastor Gary Look, officiating. Arrangements are by the Scott-Wilson Funeral Home, Calais, Maine.

Alida Garoppolo

MERIDEN -- Alida Garoppolo, 92, peacefully left this world to join her beloved daughter, Dorothy (Garoppolo) Ogle, her beloved son-in-law, Joseph W. Ogle and her grandson, Theodore T. Ogle in eternal rest on Friday, April 19, 2002.

Alida was born in Ommen, Holland, on Aug. 4, 1909. She was raised by grandparents until she emigrated to New York to live with her parents in 1921. Soon after, she married Teddy Garoppola on May 26, 1926, and they have been happily married for 76 years. Her only daughter, Dorothy, predeceased Alida in 1969, and her son-in-law, Joe, quickly followed in 1970. Alida and Teddy raised their four grandchildren as their own. They will always remember their Grandmother with love and appreciation.

Alida is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 76 years, Theodore T. Garoppolo; her loving son, John Garoppolo of Manchester; and her sister, Delphina Herzog of Florida. She also left six grandchildren, Donna Laich, Joseph Ogle Jr., Cheryl Morgan, Mark and David Garoppolo and Ruth Spellman. In addition to, ten great-grandchildren, Melanie, Bryan, Stephen, Jacqueline, Valerie, Amy Jeffrey, Gregory, Jason, and Celen; and one great-great-grandchild, survive her.

Friends may call at Beecher & Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden, Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral will leave Tuesday, April 23rd at 9:30 a.m. Service will be at St. John Lutheran Church at 10 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1004, Meriden, CT 06450.

Elizabeth A. Talmadge

NEW HAVEN -- Elizabeth A. Talmadge, formerly of Meriden and Branford, died April 19, 2002.

Mrs. Talmadge was born in Stony Creek on Feb. 1, 1943, a daughter of the late George and Helen Fisher Thomas. She was a waitress at the 76 Truck Stop in Branford.

She was the wife of Arthur Talmadge Sr. of New Haven mother of Arthur Talmadge Jr. of Branford, Ilene Cormier of Massachusetts and Troy Talmadge of Meriden; sister of Mary Groncheski of Clinton; grandmother of Heather Ann Nazzaro and Veronica L. Nazzaro; great-grandmother of Michael Burns.

A memorial Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church in Branford. The W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 504 Main St., Branford, is in care of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The American Lung Association, 45 Ash St., East Hartford, CT 06108-3272.

Eric J. Zimmer

SOUTHINGTON -- Eric J. Zimmer, 29, of 455 Meriden Ave., died Friday, April 19, 2002, at Bradley Memorial Hospital.

He was born May 15, 1972, in Bristol, son of Rodney "Skip" and Carol (Markie) Zimmer. He was employed by Landry Communication in Windsor Locks. Mr. Zimmer was a member of the First Congregational Church and enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Besides his parents, he is survived by a sister and her husband, Karen and Edward Apicella of Southington; his maternal grandmother, Mabel Markie of Farmington; his paternal grandparents, Rodney and Ethel Zimmer of Meriden; a nephew, Brandon Apicella; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Alcid Markie.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, at 10 a.m. at the First Congregational Church. Burial will be at South End Cemetery. Calling hours will be Monday, 5 to 8 p.m. at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 North Main St.

Marion H. Ciervo

SOUTHINGTON -- Marion H. (Oppelt) Ciervo, 72, of 90 Walkley Drive, died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at Bristol Hospital. She was the wife of Michael A. Ciervo.

Born on July 19, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Minnie (Beradino) Oppelt. Marion was a parishioner of St. Thomas Church.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, Michael R. Ciervo and his fiancee, Linda Mariano of Southington and Mark and his wife, Gail of Bristol; a daughter, Diane Hubeny of Southington; and a sister, MaryAnn Cirullo of Farmington; five grandchildren, Michael J. Ciervo, Nathan Saucier, Nicholas Hubeny, Rachel Ciervo and Morgan Senger. Marion is also survived by a sister-in-law, Phyllis Oppelt of Newington; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Charles; and a sister, Angela Wozniak.

The funeral will be Thursday, April 25, 2002, at 9:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St. to St. Thomas Church at 10 a.m. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Donations may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Greater CT Chapter, 1155 Silas Dean Hwy., Wethersfield, CT 06109-4301.

Louis DeSarno

LAKE WORTH, Fla. -- Louis DeSarno of Lake Worth, Florida, formerly of Meriden, passed away April 21, 2002. He is the beloved husband of Evelyn (Hozer).

He was born Oct. 13, 1911 to Cavino and Rose (Finaldi) DeSarno. Mr. DeSarno was a life member of Disabled American Veterans, member of Jewish War Veterans, life member of American Federation of Musicians and a member of Temple B'Nai Abraham in Meriden. He was retired from International Silver Co. and enjoyed playing in dance bands. Mr. DeSarno was awarded a Purple Heart while serving with the Ozark Division in Germany during World War II.

He was the father of Jayne (Robert) Papoosha; grandfather of Ellen Borek and Peter (Patricia) Papoosha; great-grandfather of Michael and Alexis Borek; brother of Antionette Soroka, Celia Liporati, Minnie Barbagli, Lucy Popalardo, Dorothy Levine, Aniello (Marilyn) DeSarno and Stephen DeSarno and the late Mary Guerrera; also many nieces and nephews.

Burial services were held in Florida.

Alba Draghi

WALLINGFORD -- Alba Cassano Draghi, 83, of Marc Drive, entered into rest Sunday, April 21, 2002, in the Regency House of Wallingford. She was the beloved wife for 61 years of Rolland L. Draghi.

Born in Wallingford, July 3, 1918, a daughter of the late Peter and Angelina Vessavoe Cassano, she was a lifelong Wallingford resident. Mrs. Draghi had been employed by the International Silver Co. for 35 years until her retirement. She was a member of the Libro Pensiero Ladies Auxiliary and had been a member of the Ladies Guild of Our Lady of Fatima Church. She was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church and had been a member of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Society.

Besides her beloved husband, Rolland, Mrs. Draghi is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Anthony Baylow of Wallingford; her grandchildren, Kimberly Kremzar and her husband, Carl M. Kremzar, and Troy Baylow; her great-grandchildren, Carl M. Kremzar Jr., Danielle Kremzar, and Kara Kremzar; her sister, Rose Mellilo of Wallingford; and several nieces and nephews.

Her family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St., Ext., Wallingford, Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 8 a.m. from the Wallingford Funeral Home, when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory may be sent to the Regency House Van Fund, 181 East Main St., Wallingford, CT 06492.
