Robert J. Morrissey Jr.
MERIDEN -- Robert J. Morrissey Jr., 77, of 401 Parker Ave., South, beloved husband of Gerda (Bremer) Morrissey, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002 under the loving care of the doctors and nurses at MidState Medical Center.
A lifelong resident of Meriden, born on Oct. 15, 1924, he was the son of the late Robert J. and Lydia (Oefinger) Morrissey. He graduated from Meriden High School, class of '42. He was a 1944 graduate of the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y., and served on several vessels during World War II, carrying supplies and troops to all parts of the world. After the war he joined the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier. He was a familiar sight in the downtown area because he was the only mail carrier to use a mail cart. He retired from the Postal Service after 35 years of service. After his retirement, he enjoyed work as a part-time travel agent at Meriden Travel Bureau. He was a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Church. He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, at one time serving as President. He was also a member of AARP Chapter 2954.
Besides his wife of 55 years, he is survived by a daughter, Linda Buganski and Thomas Furgalack; a granddaughter, Sara Buganski and her fiance', Spencer DeSilva of Mansfield, Mass.; and grandson, Christopher Buganski and his fiance', Rebbecca LeVangie of Omaha, Neb.; also survived by his sister, Carol (Morrissey) Greiner of Amherst, N.Y., and her husband, Dr. William Greiner; nephews, Kevin, Terrence and Daniel Greiner, niece, Susan (Greiner) Keenan and their spouses. He was predeceased by a daughter, Kathleen (Morrissey) Carabetta; and two grandsons, Ryan and Sean Carabetta.
The funeral will be held on Friday, April 19, at 9:45 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden and at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Church. Burial with military honors will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 538 Preston Ave., Meriden, CT 06450-1004.
John M. Howe
MANHATTAN, N.Y. -- John M. Howe, 60, of 137 West 12th St., died suddenly Monday, April 15, 2002 at his home.
He was born in New Haven, March 25, 1942, a son of John C. and Inez Isaza Howe of Wallingford. Mr. Howe was a graduate of St. Michael's College in Winooski, Vt., and received his Master's degree from Boston College. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Hamden. Until his retirement, he was managing editor of Chemical Engineering Progress Magazine.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Marie Laffin of Wallingford and Marilyn Walker of Playa del Rey, Calif.; and two nephews, Thomas and Nicholas Laffin of Wallingford.
The funeral will leave the B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm St., Wallingford on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. for a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Resurrection, 115 Pond Hill Road, Wallingford. Burial will be at St. John's Cemetery, Wallingford. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. If friends so desire, gifts in his memory may be made to Our Lady of the Angel's Association, Marian House, Niagara University, N.Y., 14109-1916.
Garth Minegar
MERIDEN -- Garth Minegar, 68, a former Valley and assistant county editor at Connecticut Post for five years, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002.
Minegar attributed death to the ravages of polio and post-polio syndrome. He incurred polio in 1940 and post polio in 1985. "Polio destroyed my life," he said. He was born in Elkhart, Ind., in 1933, the son of Marion and Susan Hartman Minegar.
His survivors are a son, Nathanael Bayard Minegar; and a daughter, Hadley Baldwin Sporbert, both of Meriden; two grandsons and a granddaughter; as well as three sisters, Patricia Blenner and Jean Thursby of Elkhart and Cara Carman of Burlington, Mich.; and a brother, Gerald Minegar of Punta Gorda, Fla.
Garth Minegar was a graduate of Elkhart High School and Indiana University. He began his newspaper career at the Elkhart Truth in the late 1950s. He was a reporter for two years before moving to the Erie (Pa.) Times-News, where he was the county government and circuit court reporter for five years. At Erie, he and a fellow reporter, Robert Protzman, won the 1965 Emery. A Brownell award from the National Legal Aid and Defender Association, Chicago, for articles and editorials that led to the establishment of the Erie County, Pa., Legal Defenders Office. Minegar became a copy editor briefly, then became city editor for more than 25 years and managing editor at The Evening Sentinel, Ansonia, before its doors were closed by its owners, Thomson Newspapers on Dec. 24, 1991. He retired on doctors' orders in 1996 after five years at the Post and nearly 40 as a journalist. Before moving to Meriden, he had lived 25 years in Seymour.

Jay N. Underwood
MERIDEN -- Jay N. Underwood, 68, of Meriden, died at St. Joseph's Hospital in Orange, Calif. He was the son of the late Marjorie and Edward Rybak.
Born Feb. 22, 1934, in Meriden, Jay lived his life doing what he loved most; machining and playing music. He was a machinist nearly 50 years.
He is survived by his soulmate, Lucille (Passanisi) Underwood; a son, Layne Underwood; and daughter, Karen Underwood, all residing in California; also, a daughter, Adrian and her husband, John Indorf of Wallingford; Jay also leaves behind a sister, Nancy Semrau of Wallingford; and four grandchildren, Kristin, Karla, and Kevin(K.C.) Conklin of California and Nicholas Indorf of Wallingford; he is also survived by many beloved cousins in Maine.
Memorial services will be held 1p.m. Monday, April 22, at Waverly Church, 1700 E. Fairhaven Ave. Santa Ana, Calif. 92701. Donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.
William J. Connelly
CHESHIRE -- William J. (Bill) Connelly of Quarry Village Drive, Cheshire, and Pt. Charlotte, Fla., husband of Mary Morris Connelly passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2002, in Florida.
Jean Berry Connelly, his first wife, predeceased him; and their five surviving children are Patricia Connelly Bowley of West Haven, Jo-Anne Connelly Frenkel of Shelton, Robert W. of Arizona, William J. Jr. of Bethel and James P. Connelly of Calif.; also survived by nine grandchildren.
Mr. Connelly, 84, died suddenly in Pt. Charlotte, where he resided in the winter. He was born in New Rochelle, N.Y., son of the late Patricia J. and Blanche W. Connelly. He resided in Fairfield for 28 years and worked for the Arnold Bakers Inc. He later resided in Cheshire for 24 years and operated his own food distributing business before his retirement. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a member of the American Legion RH Storrs Post 92, the VFW Rochford Post 10052, the DAV Chapter 6, the Knights of St. Patrick, the Hamden Lodge of Elks 2224 and the Sleeping Giant Golf Club.

Walter J. Dillon Sr.
SOUTHINGTON -- Walter John Dillon Sr., 89, of 57 Hart Acre Road, died Friday, April 19, 2002, at Bradley Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Margaret (Stewart) Dillon.
Born on Jan. 3, 1913, the son of the late John and Sarah (Carroll) Dillon. He was a 1932 graduate of Crosby High School. Mr. Dillon was a U.S. Army-Air Force veteran of World War II. He had served on the Southington PZC for 23 years, during which he was Chairman for 15 years. He was a former member of the Democratic Town Committee and a former member of the CT Regional Planning Agency. He was a member of the Southington Elks for over 45 years. A past Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Dillon was a member of the Calendar House and was an avid golfer and bowler. Prior to his retirement in 1978, he was employed by First National Stores.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Walter J. and his wife, Maura Dillon Jr. and a daughter, Nancy and her husband, Denis LeBlanc, all of Southington; a sister, Marge McGrath of Waterbury; five grandchildren, Brian and Daniel LeBlanc, Neal, Courtney and Kathleen Dillon; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Carl, Earl and William.
The funeral will be held on Monday at 9:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington to St. Thomas Church at 10 a.m. for a Mass. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery. Ethel Francesconi
WALLINGFORD -- Ethel Bundock Pronovost Francesconi, 88, of Christian St., Wallingford, beloved wife of the late Frank J. Francesconi Sr. died Friday, April 19, 2002 surrounded by her loving family at her residence.
Born in Wallingford, Jan. 20, 1914, daughter of the late Stephen and Helen O'Reilly Bundock and had been a lifelong resident. She had been employed by the Union Trust Company in Wallingford as an Executive Secretary for over 25 years until her retirement. She had also been employed by the Gaylord Hospital in Wallingford as a Switchboard Operator for many years, was the Secretary for the Conservation Commission for the Town of Wallingford and was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church in Wallingford.
She is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Norine M. and Fred L. Roberson of Meriden and Kathleen M. and James X. Logan of Wallingford; her five grandchildren, Thomas Roberson and his wife, Susan, David Roberson, Debra Treiber and her husband, Scott, Amy Logan and Jeffrey Logan; her stepson, Frank J. Francesconi Jr. and his wife, Virginia of Wallingford; her step-grandsons, Thomas Francesconi and Richard Francesconi; her four great-grandchildren, Leanne Treiber, Megan Treiber, Jessica Francesconi and Thomas Francesconi.
Her family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wallingford, Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m. from the Wallingford Funeral Home, when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery

Gertrude A. Klockner
MERIDEN -- Gertrude A. Klockner, 82, of 52 Button St., died Thursday, April 18, 2002, at Westfield Care and Rehab Center. She was the wife of Herbert Klockner.
Born in Meriden on May 3, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Fritz and Arlene Mansolf Carlson and was employed as a secretary at MRM Industries.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter and her husband, Sandra and David Stevens of Meriden; two granddaughters, Kimberly Fazzina and her husband, John Fazzina of Meriden and Debra Troiana and her husband, Jason Troiana of Rocky Hill; and two great-grandchildren, Stephen and Rebecca Fazzina.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. If desired, contributions in Mrs. Klockner's memory may be made to the Franciscan Home and Hospice Care, 267 Finch Ave., Meriden, CT 06451, or to a charity of one's choice. Orie N. LaCroix
WALLINGFORD -- Orie N. LaCroix, 92, formerly of Church Street, Yalesville section of Wallingford, died Thursday, April 18, 2002, at Miller Memorial Community in Meriden. He was the beloved husband of Helen Pankiewicz Fagan LaCroix.
Mr. LaCroix was born in Yalesville, Sept. 16, 1909, son of the late Peter and Nellie LaCroix, and had been a lifelong Yalesville resident. He had been employed at the Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Corporation in North Haven for many years and later as a custodian at the Yalesville Elementary School for several years. He was a founding member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, and a member of the original Building Committee and the Men's Club of the parish.
Besides his wife, Helen, he is survived by his daughter, Lorraine A. (Mrs. Laurence) Malone of Wallingford; four grandsons, Michael J. Malone of Massachusetts, Kevin A. Malone of Brookfield, Peter L. Malone of Wallingford and Steven P. Malone of Nebraska; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Lillian (Mrs. Raymond) Custy of Meriden; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Anne Nemeth LaCroix; a brother, Edward LaCroix; and his son-in-law, Laurence W. Malone III.
His family will receive relatives and friends Tuesday in the Yalesville Funeral Home, 386 Main St., Yalesville section of Wallingford from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., when the funeral cortege will proceed to Our Lady of Fatima Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery
in Wallingford.
