John S. Minicucci
SOUTHINGTON -- John S. Minicucci, 86, of Meadow Road, Southington, died Friday, April 12, 2002 in New Britain. He was the widower of Dorothy (Lindelof) Minicucci, who died in 1986.
A New Britain native, he was a former Plainville resident for 20 years, before moving to Southington in 1978. A graduate of New Britain High School, he served with the 351st Infantry with the U.S. Army in World War II and was a purple hear recipient. John worked at Merrow Machine Co. in Hartford for over 15 years, retiring in 1981. He was a life member of the VFW Post in Waterbury and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Surviving is a daughter, Bonnie Theriault and her husband, Ray of Southington; two step-sons, John Mangan and his wife, Leslie of Plainville and Charles Mangan and his wife, Jean of Newington; a step-daughter, Carol Swetz and her husband, Thomas of Yonkers, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Bethany, Ryan and Randy Theriault; four step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Jennie Valluzzi.
Funeral services are Monday at 10 a.m. in Carlson Funeral Home, 45 Franklin Square, New Britain. Burial with military honors will be in Fairview Cemetery. Estelle Ohmes
NORTH HAVEN -- Estelle Selbrowich Danick Ohmes, 92, formerly of Temple St., North Haven, died Thursday, April 11, 2002 at the Masonic Home in Wallingford. She was the wife of the late Alfred F. Ohmes Sr.
Born in Bridgeport on March 26, 1910, daughter of the late John and Rosie Radredick Selbrowich. She was a parishioner of St. Francis Cabrini Church.
Mother of Alfred F. Ohmes Jr. of Taylors, S.C.; grandmother of Troy Ohmes of Greensboro, N.C., and Todd Ohmes of Baton Rouge, La. She was predeceased by three sisters; and two brothers.
Her funeral procession will leave the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Ave., North Haven, Saturday at 12:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. Francis Cabrini Church at 1 p.m. Interment will follow in North Haven Center Cemetery. Friends and relatives may call Saturday from 12 to 12:30 p.m. Should friends desire memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis Cabrini Church Building Fund, Pond Hill Road, North Haven 06473.
Harold H. Orzech
MONETA, Va. -- Harold H. Orzech, 74, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002 at his home in Moneta, Va., after a brief illness.
A resident of Meriden of 70 years, Harold was born in Meriden on Feb. 13, 1928, a son of the late Harold Orzech and Mary Borwiak Orzech. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his three sisters, Kay Kusza, Helen Haberli and Nellie Vumback; and a brother, George Orzech. Harold was the owner and operator of Middlesex Marine, Portland before he retired and made his residence in Virginia.
He is survived by a former spouse, Jean Orzech; two daughters, Linda Hocott of Southington and Joan Orzech of Meriden; two sons, Harold Orzech Jr. and Stephen Orzech of Meriden; two grandchildren, Julius Hocott of Orlando, Fla., and Shauna Foote; two great-grandchildren, Ashley Foote and Leiana Vasquez, all of Lakeland, Fla.; a sister, Margaret Wotton; and two brothers, Henry Orzech and Stanley Orzech, all of Meriden.
A memorial service will be held at the Walnut Grove Chapel, Meriden at 10 a.m. Monday, April 15. There will be no calling hours.
Stanley W. Stegos
WALLINGFORD -- Stanley W. Stegos, 77, of North Farms Road, Wallingford died Friday, April 12, 2002 in the MidState Medical Center in Meriden after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of the late Marie Simeone Stegos.
Born in Guilford, Feb. 14, 1925, a son of the late Charles and Beatrice Gregor Stegos, he was a lifelong Wallingford resident. He had served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and had returned home to own and operate his farm until he retired several years ago. He was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church, and was a lifetime member of the Silver Squares.
Mr. Stegos is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Bruce Binnix of Wallingford; his son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Gail Stegos of Wallingford; his grandchildren, David Stegos, Christopher Stegos and his wife, Kelly, Daniel Stegos, Marcella Binnix, Kristen Binnix and Craig Stegos; his sister, Helen Paluconis of Wallingford; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Marunda.
His family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wallingford Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m. from the Wallingford Funeral Home, when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery. Col. (Ret.) Theodore A. Wojtasik
WALLINGFORD -- Funeral services for Col. (Ret.) Theodore A. Wojtasik, were held Saturday at 10 a.m. from the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St., Ext., Wallingford and at 10:30 a.m. at SS. Peter and Paul Church in Wallingford. Rev. Daniel J. Karpiey, celebrated the Mass of Christian burial. Interment with military honors, accorded by the Antique Veterans, World Post No. 1, of Meriden, was in SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery
in Wallingford.
The pallbearers were his grandsons, Derek Bennett, David Bennett, Brian Mitchell, Mark Wollen, Joseph Wojtasik Jr., and Lance Wojtasik.
Mr. Wojtasik, beloved husband of Mary J. Baroni Wojtasik, of East Main St., Wallingford, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002.
Hope-jane Meyer
WALLINGFORD - Hope-jane (Gillingham) Meyer, 80, died Saturday, April 13, 2002, at the Middlesex Memorial Hospital in Middletown after a lengthy illness. She was the widow of the late John H. Meyer and had formerly lived at 19 Norman Ave., Wallingford for nearly 50 years.
She was born in Portland, Maine, July 6, 1921, the eldest of the late Arthur and Janie (Smith) Gillingham. She married John H. Meyer in Portland, Maine, on Sept 13, 1943, and they subsequently moved to Wallingford in 1946. Hope-jane graduated from Portland, Maine High School, class of 1939 and Colby College, class of 1943. She later earned a Mastery in Library Science from Southern Connecticut State University. She worked at the Wallingford Public Library and as a substitute teacher for several years. She was passionately committed to promotion of literature and reading, especially with children. In conjunction with her friend and colleague, Alicia Morse, they established library media centers in all Wallingford elementary schools. She was a school librarian media specialist for 30 years in Wallingford.
She is survived by a son, Douglas William Meyer; a granddaughter, Jessica Bucklin Gillingham Meyer, both of Guilford; a brother, Chester (Chet) A. Gillingham and his wife, Marilyn of West Newfield, Maine; and four nephews and their spouses, Steven and Pam Gillingham, John and Holly Gillingham and Peter G. Gillingham, all of Maine, and David and Wendi Gillingham of Vermont. She was predeceased by a sister, Louise Gillingham Bennett.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 18, at 2 p.m., at the In Memoriam Cemetery, Wallingford. Friends may call at the B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm St., Wallingford on Wednesday, April 17, from 4 to 7 p.m. A major portion of Hope-jane's extensive personal library was donated to the Children's Room at the Brainerd Memorial Library in Haddam, CT. Geraldine B. Shaw
WALLINGFORD - Geraldine Johnson Baylow Shaw, 85, of Masonic Avenue, Wallingford, formerly of Linden Ave., Westbrook, died Saturday, April 13, 2002, surrounded by her loving family, at the Masonic Geriatric and Healthcare Center in Wallingford. She was the wife of the late Robert E. Shaw.
Born in Lincoln, Neb., June 14, 1916, she was a daughter of the late Bertram and Lydia Johnson, and had been a resident of Westbrook for 25 years until moving to Wallingford two years ago. She had been employed as a sales representative at the Young Folks Shop in Madison for over 20 years until her retirement, and was a member of the Westbrook Congregational Church.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Anthony H. and Sandra B. Baylow of Wallingford; her six grandchildren, Kimberly A. Kremzar and her husband, Carl, Scott E. Baylow and Troy A. Baylow, all of Wallingford, Christopher Baylow and his wife, Susan, of Marble Head, Mass., Hope E. Baylow of Long Beach, N.Y., and Jill Baylow of Los Angeles, Calif.; and her five great-grandchildren, Carl M. Kremzar, Kara E. Kremzar and Danielle M. Kremzar, all of Wallingford, and Samual A. Baylow and Augustus E. Baylow, both of Marble Head, Mass. She was predeceased by her son, Edward D. Baylow; and her first husband, Albert K. Baylow. Her family would like to extend their thanks to the staff of Masonic Geriatric Healthcare Center for the support and excellent care given during this most difficult time.

John W. Arther
MERIDEN -- John W. Arther, 62, fiancee of Dayna Warner, died Sunday, April 14, 2002 at home after a lengthy illness.
Born in Meriden on May 21, 1939, the son of Iris Tomms Kiss of Wallingford and the late John W. Arther Sr., he resided in Meriden most of his life and had graduated from Meriden schools. Mr. Arthur was retired from Circuit-Wise in North Haven and was once self-employed as the owner of Toys Boats, Baron Enterprises, and MidState cold Castings. He was an avid model railroader and a member of the Central CT Model Railroad Association, NMRA, the Philadelphia Chapter of PRRT and HS and Silver City Quarter Midgets.
He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, John W. III and Wendy Arther of Meriden, William and Donna Arther of East Haven, Fred and Mary Arther of Milford; 10 grandchildren; a sister, Iris Maturo of Virginia; a brother, Robert Arther of Meriden; also one niece. Dayna's children and grandchildren loved him and welcomed him into their lives. He was predeceased by his step-father, Aaron Kiss.
The funeral will be held on Wednesday, April 17, at 11 a.m. in the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. Milton "Red" Badgley
SOUTHINGTON -- Milton "Red" Badgley, 90, formerly of Meriden Ave., in Southington died Monday, April 15, 2002 at Tandem Health Care Center. He was the husband of the late Louise Ripple Badgley, his first wife and the mother of his children and his second wife the late Esther Carle Badgley.
Born in Southington, June 18, 1911, son of the late Rufus and Lilla Gillim Badgley he was a lifelong resident of Southington. Milton was an active and faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Southington. He was a wonderful father and grandfather, a friend to many and loved by all. His faith and character were an example of the way life should be lived. Milton was well known in the community, as he was Captain of the Volunteer Fire Department Company No. 1 and the first of three generations of firefighters that continues today. He was President of the Exchange Club and a long time member of the Redman. He played semi-pro baseball and was one of the first inductees into the Southington High School Hall of Fame. He was employed by Boyd J. Height Chevrolet and Morton Chevrolet for 45 years and recognized as an outstanding Service Manager. He will be missed by all and remembered in our hearts.
Milton is survived by two sons and three daughters-in-law, Robert and Roberta Badgley, Roger and Terry Badgley, both of Southington and Shirley Badgley of Vermont; seven grandchildren, Keith Badgley of New Hampshire, Darren Badgley, Rebecca Sartor, all of Vermont, Roxanne Steele, Jon Badgley, Sandra Butch of Southington and Pamela Badgley of Meriden; and nine great-grandchildren, Sarah, Vanessa, Jessica, Caitlin, Kody, MacKenzie, Alexandra, Tessa and Joshua; in addition to his immediate family, he is survived by his step-daughter and sons, Deborah and Scott Lansberry of Hamden, Richard and Anita Carle of Maine and David and Karen Carle of New Hampshire and their families. He was predeceased by his oldest son, Bruce N. Badgley; and his great-granddaughter, Danielle Steele.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. from the Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home, 975 South Main St., Plantsville with an 11 a.m. church service at the First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday, April 17, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Edward S. Gwara
MIDDLETOWN -- Edward S. "Whitey" Gwara, 76, of rose Circle, Middletown, husband of 56 years of Stasia Lewandowski Gwara, died Sunday evening, April 14, 2002, at Middlesex Memorial Hospital in Middletown after a brief illness.
Born in Meriden on Nov. 29, 1925, he had resided in Meriden most of his life prior to moving to Middletown some 17 years ago. He attended local schools and was employed by Ted's Restaurant on Broad Street for 41 years, retiring in 2001. He was a parishioner of First United Methodist Church of Wallingford, an avid duckpin bowler and a member of both the Polish Knights Club of Meriden and the Polish Falcons of Middletown.
Besides his wife, Stasia, he is survived by one daughter, Kathleen Gwara of Middletown; two sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and Valerie Gwara of Meriden and Joseph and Angelina Gwara of Kensington; six grandchildren, Jennifer and her husband, Marco DiMauro, Sean and Jeffrey Gwara of Meriden, Tina and her husband, Wayne Spakowski of Deep River, Tammy Savage of Waterford and Edward Savage of Middletown; two great-grandchildren, Stirling Spakowski and Amber Rigdon; three sisters, Mrs. John (Helen) Ticino of Meriden, Mrs. Angela Zawisza of Southington, Mrs. Victoria Slowkawski of Meriden; two brothers, John and his wife, Flavia Gwara of Meriden and Stanley Gwara of Meriden; also several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Benjamin Gwara of Meriden and Anthony Gwara of Florida and a sister, Alice Victor of Southington.
The funeral will be held on Wednesday, April 17, at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Wallingford, 941 Old Rock Hill Road, with Rev. Karen Cook officiating.
