Arthur Nappi
SOUTHINGTON -- Mr. Arthur Nappi, 89, of 386 Hart St., died Wednesday, April 10, 2002 at the Bradley Memorial Hospital in Southington. He was the husband of Catherine (Bartoletti) Nappi.
Mr. Nappi was born in Waterbury on Jan. 12, 1913, son of the late Angelo Charles and Carmela (Nervo) Nappi. He moved to Southington in 1988. He was the warehouse manager of Plainville Wayside Furniture for 40 years, until retiring in 1978. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II. He was a communicant of St. Aloysius Church.
Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Charles A. Nappi, Arthur J. Nappi and Mark A. Nappi, all of Southington; and a daughter, Doreen Moffo of Southington; three sisters, Josephine DeNuncio, Clara Daddona and Melvina Scannapieco, all of Waterbury; and nine grandchildren.
A funeral will be held Friday at 9 a.m. from the Chase Parkway Memorial/The Albini Family Funeral Home, 430 Chase Parkway, Waterbury to St. Aloysius Church in Plantsville for a Mass at 10 a.m. Entombment will be in Calvary Garden Mausoleum with full military honors.
COL (Ret) Theodore A. Wojtasik
WALLINGFORD -- COL (Ret) Theodore A. Wojtasik, 87, of East Main St., Wallingford, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002 in the Masonic Geriatric Healthcare Center in Wallingford. He was the husband of over 60 years of Mary J. Baroni Wojtasik.
Born in Wallingford, Oct. 6, 1914, a son of the late Anthony and Frances Fabish Wojtasik, he had attended local schools and was a graduate of Lyman Hall High School. He had played semi-pro basketball and football for many area teams. Mr. Wojtasik was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, serving as an officer in the U.S. Army. He had participated in the Normandy Invasion of France, D-Day, with the assault forces at Omaha Beach with Co E. 116th Inf, 29th Infantry Division. He fought in the European Theater, through the hedgerows, the breakthrough at St. Lo, Northern France Rhineland, Central Europe, the Battle of the Bulge, and numerous other actions. He was the recipient of numerous commendations, citations and awards to include the Combat Infantryman's Badge, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star for valor and three Purple Hearts. In 1950, as Company Commander of the local National Guard unit, Co K, 1st Bn 102nd Infantry, he was activated with them for duty in the Korean War. Wojtasik held many command and staff positions throughout his military career. He retired from the Connecticut Army National Guard after 28 years of service with the rank of Colonel.
He had been employed by the International Silver Co., for many years until his retirement and had served on the Board of Tax Review, the Memorial Day Parade Committee, and had been a member of the Wallingford Charter Revision Commission. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Knights of Columbus, the 102nd Infantry Association, and a life member of the National Guard Association of Connecticut. He was a parishioner of SS. Peter and Paul Church.
Mr. Wojtasik enjoyed working in his yard, mowing lawns with his grandchildren and tinkering in his downstairs workshop making various items out of wood. He always looked forward to his trips to Boothbay Harbor, Maine. Mr. Wojtasik was available to share a friendly cup of coffee at anytime, and was an avid sports fan and had especially enjoyed NFL football and UConn basketball. One of his greatest joys was being with his family and interacting with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. By some, he was affectionately known as "Chief."
Besides his wife, Mary, he is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Nancy M. and Murray C. Bennett of Wallingford; his sons and daughter-in-law, Colonel Joseph T. and Ruth A. Wojtasik of Wallingford and Theodorae A. Wojtasik Jr., Ph.D., of Lauringburg, N.C.; his sister, Mae (Mrs. Stanley) Woronick of Wallingford; grandchildren, David Bennett, Christy Mitchell and her husband, Brian, Julie Wollen and her husband, Mark, Derek Bennett and his wife, Laurie, Joseph Wojtasik Jr. and his wife, Lisa and Lance Wojtasik; great-grandchildren, Joey Wojtasik III and Mikayla Wollen; he is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Nellie Chic; and his brother, Joseph Wojtasik.
A special thanks is extended to the outstanding staff of the Masonic Geriatric Healthcare Center for their caring efforts during his short stay.
His family will receive relatives and friends in the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wallingford, Saturday from 8:30 to 10 a.m., when the funeral cortege will proceed to SS. Peter and Paul Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment, with military honors will be in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be sent to the charity of one's choice.
Munson Barnes
MERIDEN -- Munson Barnes, 82, husband of Eleanore Carofino Barnes, died on Friday, April 12, 2002 at Meriden Center.
Born in Meriden on Aug. 18, 1919, son of the late Walter and Mabel Doolittle Barnes, he had resided in the Wallingford-Meriden area all his life. He had graduated from Dean Academy in Franklin, Mass., in 1939 and was employed by New Departure Hyatt Bearing Division of General Motors in Bristol, retiring in 1980. Mr. Barnes was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Navy. He was a lifetime member of the Meriden Grange, the Meriden Senior Center, and Castle Craig A.A.R.P., in addition to being an avid bowler and golfer.
Besides his wife, Eleanore, he is survived by two daughters, Sandra Perkins and Phyllis Rigoulot, both of Wallingford; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Robert and Marianne Barnes of Berlin and William Barnes of Wallingford; three step-children, Jacqueline Zdeb of Meriden, Denise and Ronald Russ of Watertown and Anthony and Marilyn Tamburri of Farmington; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his late wife, Dorothy Andrews Barnes.
The funeral will be held on Monday, April 15, at 10 a.m. at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden with Rev. Eric Henderson of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m.
Marguerite C. Cosgrove
MERIDEN -- Marguerite C. Cosgrove, 38, of Meriden, daughter of Marguerite O'Hare Cosgrove of Wallingford and the late Thomas M. Cosgrove Sr., died Sunday, April 7, 2002 after a long illness.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at a date and time to be announced. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wallingford.
Joyce Crawford
SOUTHINGTON -- Joyce Crawford, 58, of 59 Sunnyridge Drive, Plantsville section, died Friday April 12, 2002, after a courageous battle with cancer, at Bradley Memorial Hospital. She was the beloved wife of Bruce L. Crawford.
Born in Biddeford, Maine, the daughter of the late Elwood and Dorothy (Little) Brewer. She had worked at Eastern Plastics in Bristol for 11 years and most recently at the former Principal Financial Group in Wallingford. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
Besides her husband, she is survived by three loving sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Sue Crawford of Southington, Warren and Patty Crawford of Plainville and James and Sally Crawford of Bristol; four brothers, Arthur Brewer of Florida, Kenneth Brewer of Maine and Bernard and Elwood Brewer, both of Bristol; two sisters, Elva Oswald of Southington and Carol Smith of Bristol; six granddaughters and two grandsons, who she cherished dearly; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held on Monday at 9 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 145 Main St., Southington. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Calling Hours will be on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington. Donations may be made in her memory to Hospice of Central CT. P.O. James F. Haney
STUART, Fla. -- James F. Haney, 86, of 1971 S.E. Jackson St., formerly of Wallingford died Thursday, April 11, 2002 at the Martin Memorial Hospital in Stuart, Fla. He was the husband of the late Grace Snedeker Haney.
He was born in Westville, Aug. 24, 1915, a son of the late Frederick L. and Ida Lillian Heath Haney. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War, retiring after 23 years of service as a chief ENC in the submarine service. He was a member of Annawon Lodge No. 115 AF & AM in West Haven and the Scottish Rite in Connecticut. Mr. Haney had worked as a supervisor at the Masonic Home and Hospital until his retirement.
He is survived by a son, Bertil J. Haney of the Merchant Marine Service; a step-son, Edward A. Crocco of Haddam; a step-daughter, Rosemary Brown of Stuart, Fla.; a brother, Frederick I. Haney of Cheshire; and five grandchildren, Bertil Haney, Jr., Aaron Haney, Mallory Haney, Richard E. Brown III and Charles Everett Crocco. He was predeceased by two brothers, Clarence Haney and Harold Haney.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 16, at 1:30 p.m. in the chapel of the Masonic Geriatric Healthcare Center, Masonic Ave., Wallingford. Burial will be private. John M. Heckler
MIDDLEBURG, Va. -- John Maguire Heckler, founder of Boston Institutional Services, died of pneumonia and congestive heart failure recently in his home in Middleburg, Va. He was 74.
Mr. Heckler was the former husband of Margaret Heckler, former Republican congresswoman from Massachusetts, U.S. secretary of health and human services, and ambassador to Ireland. The couple divorced in 1985 after 31 years of marriage.
Born in Meriden, he graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. After his 1992 retirement from Boston Institutional Services, a brokerage firm, he moved to Virginia, where he was an avid fox hunter.
He leaves his wife, Sheryl Bills; two daughters, Belinda Mulliken of Boston and Alison Heckler-Haensler of Salisbury, Md.; a son, John M. Jr. of Arlington, Va.; two brothers, George Jr. and Charles , both of Florida; and three grandchildren.
Mark R. Korin
SOUTHINGTON -- Mark R. Korin, 64, of Southington, died Friday, April 12, 2002 at home after a brief cancer illness. He was the husband of Judy Fish Korin.
Born in Seymour, March 9, 1938, he was the son of the late Peter and Mae Korin. Mark moved to Southington in 1960 after his marriage to Judy. He graduated from Seymour High School in 1956. He spent the next two years in the U.S. Army, followed by two years in the reserves. Mark attended local colleges and got his degree in Industrial Engineering from New Haven University by attending nights. Mark was an avid outdoorsman and gardener. He raised and trained many dogs for field trials, competing throughout the country, having many championships. He retired Pratt and Whitney, Middletown in 2000, after 42 years as an engineer. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Southington.
In addition to his wife of 42 years, Judy Korin, Mark is survived by two daughters, Cris Korin of Wolcott and Jill Korin of San Francisco; a brother and sister-in-law, Basil and Marlyn Korin of New Mexico; a brother-in-law, Ted Fish; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Rowley; and several nieces and nephews and their families.
A funeral service will be held Monday, April 15, at 11 a.m. at the Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home, 975 South Main St., Plantsville. Burial will follow in South End Cemetery. Calling hours are on Monday from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, requests that contributions in memory of Mark be made to the Southington YMCA (Camp Scholarship Fund,) 29 High St., Southington, CT 06489.
John E. Maestrini
MERIDEN -- John E. Maestrini, 76, of 380 Crown St., died Thursday, April 11, 2002 at St. Elizabeth Center, Curtis Home, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Meriden on April 5, 1926, he was the son of the late Enrico and Gina Maestrini. Mr. Maestrini had resided in Meriden all of his life and had graduated from Meriden schools. He was employed locally as a painter and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by one daughter, Gina Maestrini of Pennsylvania ; grandchildren; a niece, Saundra Palumbo; and two nephews, Leonard and David Maestrini. He was predeceased by a brother, Santi Maestrini.
A private graveside service with military honors will be held in the CT State Veteran's Cemetery, Middletown. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Curtis Home Elderly Program, 380 Crown St., Meriden, CT 06450. The John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden is in charge of arrangements.
