George A. Olson

MERIDEN -- George A. Olson, 68, formerly of 75 Carey Ave., died Friday, March 29, 2002 at Uconn Medical Center in Farmington, following a long illness.

He was born in Meriden, Feb. 18, 1934, a son, of the late Ivar R. and Mildred V. Adam Olson. He was a graduate of Lyman Hall High School, class of 1952. While attending High School, he gained recognition for his artistic abilities primarily in the mediums of charcoal and pen and ink drawings, and was encouraged by his mother, also an artist. Mr. Olson served four years in the Air Force, obtaining the rank of Staff Sergeant during the Korean War. He attended the University of CT, Storrs and the Ward School of Electronics in Hartford. He was employed as an electronics technician at the Meriden-Markham Airport and worked 18 years as a field service technician for Decca Navigation Systems in New York and Maryland. Although Mr. Olson was primarily a self-taught artist, he did study under Carol Williams at Stonehouse in Columbia, Md., from 1978-1981. During this time, his favorite subjects were scenes of fishing boats and small marinas along the Maryland shore. Following the death of his mother in 1982, he sold his home in Maryland and moved to Connecticut to assist his father and to pursue an art career full-time. Over the next 10 years Mr. Olson displayed his artwork in a number of public and private settings including: St. Raphael's Hospital in New Haven, the North Haven Library, the Cheshire Library and the Greene Art Gallery in Guilford. Many of his paintings were selected for juried exhibitions in Kent, Madison, Meriden, Mount Carmel, Branford Guilford, and the John Slade Ely House in New Haven. While he gained recognition as a portrait artist, his favorite subjects were abandoned New England barns and dockside scenes. He once remarked to a reporter, "If you take a barn that's very old which Mother Nature has started to repossess, it's in a state which doesn't belong to mankind any more. It's been given up. I try to capture that transitional state." He was also an avid photographer, creating many of his works from pictures he had taken along the shorelines and throughout New England. He also worked at Art Rich Photography in Southington. George Olson was an associate member of the Kent Art Association, a member of the Arts and Crafts Association of Meriden and the Mount Carmel Art Association. Among the many awards he received for his artwork were: the Union Trust Company Award, Madison Arts Society, 1985 for "Reflections"; Best in Show, Meriden Arts and Crafts Association, 1987 for "Mirror Image" (a self portrait pictured above); and the Grumbacker Silver Award, Meriden Arts and Crafts Association.

He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Dr. Betty Ann Olson of Fairfax, Va.; two nephews, Dylan Olson and wife, Jennifer of Durham, N.C., and Shane Olson of Fairfax, Va.; two grandnieces, Audrey and Victoria Olson; and two very dear friends, Robert and Marion Gionfriddo of Southington.
