Irene M. Van Deun

HAMDEN -- Irene M. Van Deun, 75, of Putnam Avenue, Hamden, died Thursday, April 4, 2002 in her home. She was predeceased by her first husband John J. Van Deun and her second husband Gero Alberino.

Born in Atlanta, GA, April 14, 1926, a daughter of the late Frank and Mary Hemma McGee, she was a Wallingford resident for many years before moving to Hamden 10 years ago. She had been employed by the Stonegate School in Durham until her retirement, and was a parishioner of the Church of the Resurrection.

Mrs. Van Deun is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Bryan J. and Karin Van Deun of Waukesha, WI., and John R. and Mary Van Deun of Wallingford; her three daughters and two sons-in-law, Jeanne M. Thibodeau and Vincent Thibodeau of Northford, Elisa E. Canterella and Louis F. Canterella of Norwalk, and Mary I. Van Deun of Oakdale, CT.; her step-son and step-daughter-in-law Robert and Liz Alberino of Cheshire; and her cherished grandchildren Bryan, Andrew, Kristin, Johanna, Emma, Jayson, and John. Besides her two late husbands, John J. Van Deun and Gero Alberino, Mrs. Van Deun was predeceased by her son Scott A. Van Deun, her brother John R. Eccleston, her step-father Raymond Eccleston, and her granddog Scarlett.

Her family will receive relatives and friends in The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wallingford, Sunday from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. from The Wallingford Funeral Home when the funeral cortege will proceed to the Church of the Resurrection where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:45 a.m. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Irene Van Deun's memory may be sent to Bethphage, 606 Congdon Street West, Middletown, CT, 06457. (For the benefit of Mary Van Deun at Turner Group Home)

Roy Otto Winkel

MERIDEN -- Roy Otto Winkel, 86, died Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at Meiden Nursing and Rehab Center.

Born in Meriden on May 4, 1915, he was the son of the late Ernest and Clara MacCracken Winkel. He was employed in the office of the International Silver Company until his retirement and served with the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church.

He is survived by a brother, Robert Winkel, of Storrs, CT and four nephews, John Rule of Middletown, James Rule of Parkland, FL, Gary Winkel of Stratford and Rev. Randy Winkel of Venice, FL. He was predeceased by two sisters, Ruth Winkel and Dorothy Rule.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, April 9, at 10 a.m. in Miner Cemetery in Middletown. The Rev. Wallace Merdinyan will officiate. If desired, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 538 Preston Ave., P.O. Box 1004, Meriden, CT 06450. Arrangements are under the direction of the Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden.

Margaret K. Hamerski

NORTHFORD -- Margaret Kovacs Hamerski, 58, of 16 Lakeview Drive, died Friday, April 5, 2002, at the MidState Medical Center, Meriden,

Born in Bridgeport on Sept. 1, 1943, daughter of Ruth M. Keenan Kovacs of Milford and the late John W. Kovacs, she was a graduate of Milford High School and had worked as a switchboard operator for St. Raphael's Hospital and later for Blue Cross & Blue Shield until her retirement. Her interests were nature and gardening.

She was the mother of Theresa A. and Jennifer L. Hamerski of Meriden; sister of Maria Kovacs Converse of Milford and Diane Kovacs of Sorrento, Maine; aunt of Jonathan, Amy, Reid, Brook and the late Austin and Jordan.

Relatives and friends may call at the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Ave., North Haven, Monday, from 4 to 8 p.m. and attend a memorial gathering on Tuesday, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Monticello's Restaurant, 577 South Broad St. (Rt. 5), Meriden, celebrating the life of Margaret K. Hamerski. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Assoc., 300 Research Pkwy, Meriden, CT 06450.

Louis J. Sakelarakis

MERIDEN -- Louis J. Sakelarakis, 86, formerly of 65 Holly Lane, husband of Kalli Mentavlos Sakelarakis, died on Friday, April 5, 2002, at the Meriden Center after a lengthy illness.

Born in Greece, June 19, 1915, he was the son of the late James and Helen Kokotas Sakelarakis, and he had resided in Meriden for over 60 years. He owned and operated the Main St. Diner in Plainville until his retirement. Mr. Sakelarakis at one time operated the former 1711 Inn and was employed at the former Johnny's Grill. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army. He was a member of AHEPA and the Meriden Elks Lodge. He was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in New Britain.

Besides his wife, Kalli, he is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and Richard Thibodeau of Southington and Penny and Joseph Aileo of Waterbury; three grandchildren, Christopher Gianacopolos, Janet Rogers and Louis James Gianacopolos, all of Southington; four great-grandchildren, Samantha Rogers, Gary Rogers, Louis James Gianacopolos Jr. and Kalli Alexandra Gianacopolos, all of Southington; and a sister, Georgia Procopiou of Meriden. Mr. Salelarakis is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at 9 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, and at 10 a.m. in St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 301 W. Main St., New Britain. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, April 8, 2002, from 5 to 8 p.m. A Tisagion service will be held at 6:30 p.m.

Helen B. Godson

MERIDEN -- Helen B. Godson, 89, wife of the late R. Howard Godson, died on Saturday, April 6, 2002, at MidState Medical Center.

Born in Nurnberg, Germany on Oct. 28, 1912, the daughter of the late Lampert and Katherine (Amling) Binder. She had resided in the Meriden-Wallingford area for the last 50 years. Mrs. Godson retired from Fay & Lunt Attorneys of Wallingford. She was a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Church. She was a member of the Friends of the Library, loved gardening and birds. She also was an avid reader and enjoyed travel.

She is survived by a niece, Maureen Binder of Meriden; a nephew, Frank Binder of Shrewsbury, Mass.,; and a sister-in-law, Bert Binder of Wallingford. She is also survived by cousins, Helen Rosenbeck of Middlebury, Franz and Joseph Amling and Rudy Liebergeld of Germany; along with additional family in Connecticut and Germany. She was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph J. and Frank J. Binder.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday, April 10, at 10:30 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St. and at 11 a.m. in St. Rose of Lima Church. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to St. Rose of Lima Church, 35 Center St., Meriden, CT 06450, or the Meriden Public Library, 105 Miller St., Meriden, CT 06450.

Rena A. Siligato

HAMDEN -- Rena Santina Angelotti Siligato, 89, of 2199 State Street, Hamden, died April 7, 2002. She was the wife of the late Charles Siligato.

She was born in New Haven, Dec. 11, 1912, the daughter of the late Ezio and Ida Tiezzi Angelotti.

She is survived by a daughter Mrs. Tom (Barbara) Knight of Wallingford, sons David Siligato of Hamden; and James Siligato of Narragansett, R.I.; sisters, Beatrice LaPaglia of Hamden and Josephine Smith of Wallingford; a brother, Philip Angelotti of Hamden; and eight grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, John A. Silagato; and brothers, Albert Aldo and Armand Angelotti.

The funeral will be held Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. from the Peter H. Torello & Son Funeral Home, 1022 Dixwell Ave., Hamden and at St. Stephan Church at 10 a.m. Burial will be in State St. Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Partnership for Adult Day Care, 30 Gilles Road, Hamden, CT 06517.

Diane Carey

WATRBURY -- Diane (Millette) Carey, 80, of Midfield Drive, died Monday, April 8, 2002 at St. Mary's Hospital. She was the widow of William H. Carey Jr.

Mrs. Carey was born July 31, 1921 in Waterbury, a daughter of the late Moses and Regina (Vadnas) Millette. She retired from Devon Precision Industries and attended St. Leo the Great Church.

She is survived by a son, William H. Carey III of Waterbury; two daughters, Jeanne Carey of Southington and Diane Sullivan of North Scituate, R.I.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Florence Walls.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 8 a.m. from the Woodtick Memorial, 420 Woodtick Road, Wolcott to St. Leo the Great Church for a funeral Mass at 9 a.m. Burial to follow in All Saints Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home, Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorial gifts may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Meriden Road, Waterbury, CT 06705.

Teddie S. Gawlak

MERIDEN -- Teddie Soltis Gawlak, 49, of Meriden, passed away into the arms of the Lord Sunday, April 7, 2002 after suffering a heart attack.

Born in Meriden on Jan. 10, 1953 to Marion Pontolillo Gawlak and the late Teddie C. Gawlak, she attended Maloney High School and worked at Walgreens Pharmacy until her marriage to John Soltis II.

She had three children, Fawn Soltis, Nicole Soltis and John Soltis III of Meriden; and three grandchildren, Zachary LaRiviere, Cheyanne LaRiviere and Haley Tarnawa; besides her mother, she leaves her sisters, Sandra Zadrick of Meriden, JoAnn Meyer; and brother-in-law, Tom Meyer of Durham; and her brother, James J. Gawlak of Seattle, Wash.; also many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Debbie Joy Gawlak; and brother-in-law, Alan Zadrick, both of Meriden. She will be greatly missed by all.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 11, at 11 a.m. at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please send gifts to the American Heart Association, 5 Brookside Drive, Wallingford, CT 06492.
