Anna M. Orso
MERIDEN -- Anna (Nettie) M. Orso, 94, of 360 Broad St., formerly of 9 Kingsland Avenue, Wallingford, wife of the late Ralph Orso, died peacefully Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Miller Memorial Community.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews. She was pre-deceased by a brother, Ernest (Fred) Meda; and two sisters, Secundina Gattilia, and Orsolina Kilcoyne.
The funeral will leave the B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm St., Wallingford, Wednesday, April 4, at 10:15 a.m. to the Church of the Resurrection, 115 Pond Hill Road, Wallingford for a Mass of Christian burial at 11a.m. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home prior to the funeral from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Burial will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery
in West Haven.
Pasquale M. DeFrancesco
WALLINGFORD -- Pasquale M. DeFrancesco, formerly of Branford, died April 1, 2001, in New Haven.
He was born Jan. 23, 1916, in New Haven, son of the late Anthony and Philomena Vuolo DeFrancesco. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the South Pacific. He retired from the International Silver Co. where he worked for 37 years. He was a former member of the Italian-American Club of Branford and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 10186, in Branford, and the Wallingford Senior Citizens Club.
He was the loving husband of Nellie Tomko DeFrancesco; father and father-in-law of Anthony and Linda DeFrancesco of Wethersfield; grandfather of Cara Michele of Norwalk, and Cristin Lynn of Wethersfield. He is also survived by a stepson and his wife, Joseph and Jessie Tomko of Wallingford; a stepdaughter and her husband, Mary and Michael Kurylo of Montgomery Village, Md.; brother of Anthony, Andrew, Alice DellaCamera, Mary DellaCamera, and Rose Del Monaco. He was predeceased by his wife, Fannie Marinelli DeFrancesco; brothers, Ralph, Lawrence and Joseph; and sister, Pasqualina Saturno.
Funeral services will be held in W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 504 Main St., Branford, Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. with a Mass of Christian burial in St. Mary Church at 9 a.m. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m.
Helen Madigan
WALLINGFORD -- Helen Birracree (McGuire) Madigan, 86, a 20-year resident of Wallingford, died at her home on Saturday, March 31, 2001, surrounded by her children, after a valiant battle to overcome complications following a stroke.
Helen Madigan devoted her life to her family. She was born on Sept. 3, 1914, in Baltic, the second of five children of Helen Birracree McGuire and James McGuire. The economic turmoil of the depression era resulted in frequent moves for the McGuire family throughout New England and the mid-Atlantic region. Helen began school in Connecticut at age four, and in 1931 she graduated with top honors from high school in New Jersey. The family then returned to East Hampton, living beside St. Patrick's Catholic Church, and Helen went to work for a bank and then a law firm in Hartford. In East Hampton, she met Thomas Richard Madigan, who became a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. They were married at St. Patrick's in 1941 and when Mrs. Madigan became pregnant with her first child two years later, she retired from the workforce. After being assigned to FBI offices in Washington , D.C., Philadelphia, Detroit, and Buffalo, N.Y., the family returned to New Haven where Mr. Madigan, as a senior agent, handled a variety of federal cases ranging from drug smuggling to bank fraud. Along the way, the Madigan family had increased to six children. Two more sons were added to the family in New Haven. In the blizzard of January 1964, Mr. Madigan suffered a fatal heart attack, leaving Helen Madigan a widow at age 49. She single-handedly raised and educated eight children, then ages five through nineteen, returning to the workforce full-time to support her young family. She was employed for 14 years as an executive secretary at Sigma XI, a scientific honor society affiliated with Yale University from 1964 until her retirement in 1978. In addition to her full-time job outside of the home, she attended innumerable school conferences, baseball and basketball practices, ballet lessons and recitals. She also was an expert seamstress and co-led a 4-H cooking and sewing club. Mrs. Madigan was a devout member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in West Haven, and later Most Holy Trinity Church in Wallingford. After her retirement from Sigma XI, Mrs. Madigan moved to Wallingford where she was an active participant in a seniors "dance team" and other activities at the Senior Center. She also played the piano and violin, taking up music lessons at age 75. She also traveled extensively with her sisters and family, including a trip to Ireland five years ago. For the last few years, Mrs. Madigan spent the winters in Naples, Fla., where she enjoyed walks and card games with friends and visits from her children and grandchildren. Mrs. Madigan remained completely self-sufficient and active until the day she suffered a stroke, Dec. 22, 2000. In May 2000, she was selected as the Hartford Courant regional "Mother of the Year."
She is survived by her eight devoted and loving children, Michael James Madigan of Washington , D.C., Ann Madigan Sandagata of Wallingford, Thomas Richard Madigan Jr. of Brookline, Mass., Mary Madigan-Cassidy of Oakton, Va., Barbara Madigan O'Leary of Deep River, Maureen Madigan Anderson of Wallingford, James Patrick Madigan of Somerville, Mass., Timothy Joseph Madigan of Falls Church, Va.; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Mrs. Madigan is predeceased by her parents, Helen Birracree McGuire and James McGuire; three sisters, Agnes McGuire Rogers, Roberta McGuire Christiansen, and Ann McGuire Blake; one brother, James McGuire; and her husband, Thomas Richard Madigan.
Her family will receive relatives and friends at the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wallingford, Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 9 a.m. when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church, Wallingford, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery, West Haven. Alma T. Davis
MERIDEN -- Alma T. Davis, 95, of 360 Broad St., wife of the late Harold B. Davis for 64 years, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at the Miller Memorial Community.
Born in Meriden, March 30, 1906, she was the daughter of the late William and Virginia Conreaux Treiber. Mrs. Davis was a lifelong Meriden resident and was a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Church. She was a member of the Meriden Women's Club and was past president of the Spanish American War Veterans Auxiliary.
Mrs. Davis is survived by five nieces and one nephew.
The funeral will be held on Monday at 10:30 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St. and at 11 a.m. in St. Rose of Lima Church. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., prior to Mass. Eliza C. M. Dickson
WALLINGFORD -- Eliza C.M. Dickson, formerly of Hartford, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at the Masonic Geriatric Healthcare Center. She was the wife of the late Richard J. Dickson.
She was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, a daughter of the late Robert and Annie Forsythe McCafferty. Until her retirement, she was employed as a secretary with the State of Connecticut, Department of Motor Vehicles. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Hartford, Newington Lodge No. 115, Order of Eastern Star and was past chief of Ellen Douglas Lodge No. 8, Daughters of Scotia.
She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. R. W. (Eleanor Dickson) Nelson of Las Vegas, N.M.; three granddaughters, Susan, Sally and Elizabeth; and three great-grandchildren, Laura, Eric and Aaron. She was predeceased by three brothers, Peter McCafferty, James McCafferty and R. Neil McCafferty; and a sister, Annie McCafferty.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the Masonic Home Chapel, Masonic Ave., Wallingford. There are no calling hours. Burial will be at Rose Hill Memorial Park in Rocky Hill. Philip Shapiro
MERIDEN -- Philip Shapiro, 86, of 42 Trumbull St., husband of Evelyn Goldstein Shapiro, died on Friday afternoon, March 23, 2001, at MidState Medical Center.
Born in Bridgeport on Oct. 27, 1914, the son of the late Samuel and Pauline Katz Shapiro. He had been a resident of Meriden for most of his life. Mr. Shapiro was a graduate of the University of Connecticut College of Pharmacy. He was proprietor and head pharmacist of Philip's Pharmacy for some 35 years. He was a former president of the Meriden-Wallingford Pharmaceutical Association and an officer in the Connecticut Pharmacy Association. Mr. Shapiro participated in professional continuing educational classes well into his retirement.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a brother, Bernard Shapiro of Woodbridge; a sister, Rose Levy of Fairfield; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Roger and Jordan and Alison Shapiro, all of New Haven; two grandsons, Zachary and Joshua; also several nieces and nephews.
The funeral and burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Please omit flowers. Arrangements are under the direction of the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden.
Lois C. Tessman
SOUTHINGTON -- Lois Curtis Tessman, 70, formerly of Southington, died Feb. 17, 2001, at the MidState Medical Center in Meriden. She was a resident of Silver Manor Rest Home in Meriden. She was the widow of Edwin Tessman.
Born Jan 25, 1931, in New Britain, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Elizabeth Gramitt Curtis.
Lois is survived by her son, Michael Tessman of North Hampton, Mass.; her brother and sister-in-law, James and Dorothy Curtis of Southington; a special cousin, Theresa Staubley of Meriden; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 31, at 11 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 121 Pleasant St., Southington. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Fairview Cemetery

Kathryn Wiedenmann
WALLINGFORD -- Kathryn Wiedenmann, 89, of 4312 Ashlar Village, formerly of Hamden, died March 24, 2001. She was the wife of the late Hans George Wiedenmann.
She was born in New Haven daughter of the late Anthony and Rose Porto Delgrego. Mrs. Wiedenmann was a member of Mt. Carmel Congregational Church, Hamden and prior to moving to Ashlar Village was a lifelong resident of Hamden. She was a resident of Pond Ridge at Ashlar Village for the past two years.
She is survived by a daughter, Beverly Colrus and husband, William Colrus of Hamden; a son, Robert Wiedenmann and wife, Patricia Wiedenmann of Northford; a sister, Mae Pacelle of Lighthouse Point, Fla.; four grandchildren, Robert Wiedenmann Jr. of Wallingford, Donna Cann of Northford, Mark Podgwaite Sr. of Northfield,Vt. and Joanne Corvino of Milford; and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Durso; and two brothers, Thomas Delgrego and Arthur Delgrego MD.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 27th at 1 p.m. at Beecher & Bennett Funeral Home, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden. Interment will be in Centerville Cemetery, Hamden. Edward A. Biafore
MERIDEN -- Edward A. Biafore, 73, husband of Elaine Doyle Biafore of 17 Preston Drive, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, in the Masonic Geriatric Healthcare Center, Wallingford, after a brief illness.
He was born in Meriden, Dec. 1, 1927, a son of the late Antonio and Josefina Peri Biafore, he was a resident of Meriden all his life. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He enjoyed being in business and was active in various types of businesses during his long career. He was a skilled builder having built homes in Meriden, Cheshire, Prospect and Columbia for many years. He was also a real estate agent having worked for most of the Meriden agencies. He was a member of the Yalesville United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Yalesville VFW and he was a life member and past president of the Meriden Unison Club. He also participated in several other service clubs in the Meriden area over the years. Most recently he who devoted to attendance in the Aquatic Club of Healthworks where he enjoyed time with many friends.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Michelle J. and Jonathan Sumner and Cynthia S. Rapp-Blaney and her husband, Raymond Blaney, all of Middletown; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Edward D. and Gina Biafore of Glendale, Ariz., David A. Biafore of Newington and Richard W. and Laurie Rapp of Middletown; five grandchildren, Sara and Mark Sumner, Edward J. Biafore and Alexander and Adam Rapp, all of Middletown; his sister, Rose Gallucci of Meriden; and two brothers and a sister-in-law, John and Helen Biafore of Meriden and Anthony Biafore Jr., also of Meriden; several nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by two brothers, Peter Biafore and Patrick Biafore Sr.
All are invited to attend his funeral service Friday, March 23, at 10 a.m. in the Yalesville Methodist Church. He will be interred with military honors in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Meriden. Relatives and friends may visit with his family Thursday in the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 226 W. Bessie H. Ellis
SOUTHINGTON -- Bessie Haines Ellis, 98, formerly of Marcy Drive, Southington, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at Coccomo Health Care in Meriden. She was the wife of the late Russell F. Ellis.
Born in Sept. 22, 1902, the daughter of the late Walter and Amelia (Cox) Haines. Bessie was a lifelong resident of Southington. She was a lifetime member of the Plantsville Congregational Church and was also a member of the Fredericka Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star for more than 75 years.
Bessie is survived by a daughter, Nancy Barrett of Rangeley, Maine; her niece, Jean Brooks of Meriden; a grandson, George R. Barrett; three grandchildren, Natasha Clark, Benjamin R. and Katie R. Barrett; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 23, at 1 p.m. at the Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home, 975 S. Main St., Plantsville. Burial will be private in South End Cemetery. Friends and family may call on Friday, March 23, from noon to 1 p.m. prior to the service. Michael W. Gdovin Sr.
POWNAL, Vt. -- Mr. Michael W. Gdovin, Sr., 59, a resident of Jackson Cross Road, Pownal, Vt., since 1993 and a former resident of Meriden, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at his residence following a long illness.
Born in New Haven, Nov. 12, 1941, he was the son of the late Michael and Helen (Sobolowski) Gdovin. He received his education in Meriden. Mr. Gdovin married the former Gertrude "Trudy" Doyle Dec. 2, 1961, in Holy Angels Catholic Church in South Meriden. In earlier years Mr. Gdovin was employed as a hollowware buffer at International Silver Co. in Meriden until the time of their closing. He was then employed as a class III operator at the Wastewater Treatment Plant in Meriden and Cheshire. His hobbies and interests included fishing, woodworking, music and playing his guitar.
Survivors include his wife, Gertrude "Trudy" Gdovin of Pownal, Vt.; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael W. "Mickey" and Candy Gdovin of Pownal, Vt.; four daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Michael Church, Wendy and Nelson Pomeroy and Tami and Joseph Privizzino, all of Meriden, and Brenda and Rick Martin of Westerly, R.I.; five grandsons; six granddaughters; three brothers, Edward Gdovin, Wayne Gdovin and Gary Gdovin, all of Meriden; a sister, Pat Tricarico of Hillsborough, Ore.; nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Gdovin was predeceased by a grandson, Michael Church, Jr.
Memorial services to celebrate the life of Mr. Gdovin will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Saturday, March 24, at 1 p.m. At the request of Mr. Gdovin there will be no calling hours held.
