Paul Levine
MERIDEN -- Paul Levine, 81, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at MidState Medical Center, surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband of Dorothy (DeSarno) Levine.
Born in Meriden on July 11, 1919, he was the son of the late Anna and Nathan Levine. Mr. Levine was the proprietor of Colony Hardware for 45 years and the proprietor of Curtis Corp. He was an active member of Temple B'nai Abraham. He was also an active member of the Probus Club and a master mason. Mr. Levine was a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps and served in World War II, receiving the Distinguished Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal and several honorary ribbons.
Besides his wife, Dorothy, he is survived by his daughter, Naomi Marinaro of Watertown; his granddaughter, Rebecca Shaw of Providence, R.I.; and his son-in-law and dear friend, John M. Marinaro of Watertown.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday (TODAY) at 1 p.m. in Temple B'nai Abraham, with Rabbi Gloria Rubin officiating. Burial will be in B'nai Abraham Cemetery. Should friends desire, contributions in his memory may be made to the Paul Levine Memorial Fund, c/o Temple B'nai Abraham, 127 E. Main St., Meriden, CT 06450. John F. Schmitt Jr.
HATFIELD, Mass. -- John F. Schmitt Jr., 44, of 7 Straights Road, died suddenly at his home Jan. 14, 2001.
Born Dec. 12, 1956, in New Haven, the son of Carol (Griesing) Kromer and late John F. Sr. He graduated from Sheehan High School in Wallingford and attended the University of Connecticut. He worked as a sales manager for Temp Pro in North Hampton for the last six years.
He leaves Brenda Brida, with whom he lived; two sons, Paul of East Hampton, Mass., and Michael of Granby, Mass.; a daughter, Jamie Schmitt of Granby, Mass.; a brother, Richard of New Haven; a sister, Debbie Papale of Wallingford; several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles; and a grandmother, Lillian Schmitt of West Haven.
There will be an In-house service at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Czelusniak Funeral Home, North Hampton, Mass. Burial will follow at the Spring Grove Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday (TODAY) from 4 to 7 p.m. Memorials can be made to the American Heart Association, 1111 Elm St., Suite 9a, West Springfield, MA 01089-1540.
Margaret Acabchuk
MERIDEN -- Margaret "Peggy" (McCann) Acabchuk, 85, of Cricket Drive, wife of the late John F. Acabchuk Sr., died on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Westfield Care and Rehabilitation Center in Meriden after a brief illness.
Born in Middletown on Aug. 6, 1915, a daughter of the late Francis and Anna (Hawkins) McCann, Acabchuk graduated from Middletown schools and had lived in Meriden for the past 65 years. Mrs. Acabchuk was employed by New Departure, the Hyatt-Bearing Division of General Motors, for more than 40 years, retiring 19 years ago. She was a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Church.
Mrs. Acabchuk is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Carl Statchen Sr. of Meriden; a son and daughter-in-law, John and Audrey Acabchuk of Meriden; seven grandchildren, Carl Statchen Jr., Catherine Statchen, Jonathan Scott Statchen, Keith Acabchuk, Dean Acabchuk, William and Francine Siegel; five great-grandchildren, Sierra Irwin, Carly Statchen, Ashleigh and Dennis Goyette; and Leigh Acabchuk; a sister, Anna McCann of Middletown; a brother and sister-in-law, James and Lorraine McCann of West Hartford; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, John McCann of Berlin and Francis McCann of Middletown; and by a nephew, David McCann of Middletown.
The funeral will be held on Wednesday at 10:45 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, and at 11:30 a.m. in St. Rose of Lima Church. Burial will be in SS. Peter and Paul Orthodox Cemetery, Meriden. John J. Filippone
MERIDEN -- John J. Filippone, 73, husband of Lucille Neves Filippone, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, in the MidState Medical Center.
Born in Meriden, June 14, 1927, a son of the late Leonardo and Maria Fuca Filippone, he was a lifelong resident. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Filippone operated his own gas and auto service station on Springdale Avenue for many years. He had been a real estate broker, and for several years drove a Meriden Yellow Cab. He had been a member of the Sons of Italy Club. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
Besides his wife, is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Karen Borgnine of Wallingford and Lynne and Skip LaPorte of Higganum; four grandchildren, Robert Borgnine, Thomas Borgnine, Ria Borgnine and Shannon Fahey; a sister and a brother-in-law, Joan and Henry Papale of Meriden; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Fordiani.
All are invited to attend his funeral service Thursday, Jan. 18, at 11 a.m. in the Smith-Ruzzo Funeral Home, 226 W. Main St., Meriden. He will be interred in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home, Wednesday, Jan. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Louis P. Florentino
NEW HAVEN -- Louis P. Florentino, 86, of 24 Gerard Ave., New Haven, died at the Connecticut Hospice, on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001. He was the husband of the late Rose M. Gogliettino Florentino. He was the son of the late Joseph and Marcello Florentino.
Mr. Florentino is survived by a daughter, Rosemarie Thomas of Wallingford; a brother, Dominic Florentino; a sister, Gemma Dowling, both of Hamden; also survived by six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Stephen L. Florentino; a brother, Harry Florentino; and two sisters, Josephine Florentino and Elizabeth Migliaro.
Funeral will leave the East Haven Memorial, 425 Main St., East Haven, Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. for a Mass of Christian burial at 9 a.m. in St. Bernadette Church. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery. Robert A. Gerace Sr.
WALLINGFORD -- Robert A. Gerace Sr., 61, of Forest Road, Wallingford, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, in the Masonic Geriatric Healthcare Center. He was the beloved husband of 35 years of Patricia Ryan Gerace. He was a loving and devoted husband and father.
Born in Wallingford, Sept. 22, 1939, a son of Florence Zyrkowski Gerace of Wallingford and the late Anthony Gerace, he was a lifelong Wallingford resident. He was a graduate of Lyman Hall High School and had been a member of the golf team. He remained an avid golfer and had been a former member of the Wallingford Country Club. He had been active in the Wallingford Youth Soccer League, coaching for several years. He had been employed by the Wallingford Department of Public Works for 22 years, until his retirement in 1995, and also had worked as a self-employed landscaper. He had enlisted and served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Church.
Besides his wife and mother, Mr. Gerace is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Robert A. Gerace Jr. and Melissa Gerace of Manchester; his two sisters and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth and Richard Schultz of Wallingford and Lois and John Garvin of Southington; his two brothers and sisters-in-law, Thomas and Susan Gerace of Meriden and David and Tracey Gerace of Wallingford; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Phillip Gerace.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian burial Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Fatima Church, 382 Hope Hill Road, Yalesville section of Wallingford. Interment will be private in St. Lawrence Cemetery, West Haven. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the Yalesville Funeral Home, 386 Main St., Yalesville. Theresa Michaud
BRISTOL -- Theresa (Plourde) Michaud, 73, of 52 Sheila Court, formerly of Southington, died Saturday Jan. 13, 2001, at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown. She was the wife of the late Louis Michaud.
Born in Ft. Kent, Maine, a daughter of the late Aime and Leontine Plourde. She had been a resident of Bristol for the past 12 years and previously was a Southington resident for 30 years.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Diana and Stanford White of Higganum; a son and daughter-in-law, Clayton and Robye Michaud of Phoenix, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Michelle Michaud of Tempe, Ariz., and Bethany White of Higganum; six brothers, Ernie, Sylvio and Roy Plourde all of Maine, Gilton Plourde of Norwich, Elson Plourde of Bristol and Wallace Plourde of Columbia; six sisters, Phyllis Dominicus of Maine, Bernice Roy of Torrington, Lillian Caron of Bozrah, Carol Pelletier of Bristol, Glenda Plourde of Maine and Lucy Martin of South Windsor; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a grandson, Derek White; and a sister, Sylvia Levesque.
The funeral will be held Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. from Della Vecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St. Southington to St. Thomas Church at 10 a.m., 99 Bristol St., Southington. Burial will be at St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday (TODAY) from 5 to 8 p.m.
Edith H. Moriarty
MERIDEN -- Edith Helen Lofgren Moriarty, 92, formerly of New Hanover Avenue, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Avery Heights Nursing Home in Hartford. She was the wife of the late William G. Moriarty.
Mrs. Moriarty was born in Middletown on Oct. 2, 1908, a daughter of the late Malcolm J. and Josephine B. Nilson Lofgren. She was a graduate of Middletown High School and the Hartford Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1930. She worked as a registered nurse at Hartford Hospital and as a nurse at the former International Silver Company until her retirement in 1974. Mrs. Moriarty was a member of the South Meriden Trinity United Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star, Rachel Rebekah Lodge No. 2, Noble Grands, Westwood Court No. 5 Order of Amaranth, Oddfellows, Hartford Hospital Alumnae Association, AARP National and Castle Craig Chapter of Meriden, Meriden Senior Citizens Center, Meriden Women's Club, Half Century Club, Norden Lodge and VASA of American.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Lizabeth M. and Bertram J. Schmitz Jr. of Clinton; a son and daughter-in-law, William L. and Irene Moriarty of South Meriden. She was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Lofgren Johnson.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Beecher & Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Esther Muravnick
MERIDEN -- Esther Muravnick, 84, of 369 Coe Ave., wife of Max Muravnick, died on Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Coccomo Memorial Heath Care Center.
Born in Manitoba, Canada on Feb. 17, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Rivka and Jacob Slutchuk. She attended schools in Canada and had lived in Meriden for the past 58 years. Mrs. Muravnick was employed by A.G.C. Corp., retiring in 1981. She was a member of Congregation B'nai Abraham and was an active member of Hadassah.
Besides her husband, Max, she is survived by four sisters, Rose Goltzman, Lorraine Bass, Lillian Slutchuk and Marion Solomon all of Canada; a brother, Luis Slutchuk, also of Canada; and several nieces and nephews.
