Francis R. Carroll

Francis R. "Flip" Carroll, 79, of Santa Cruz, Calif., a Greenwich native and former resident, died Monday, Jan. 6, at Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto, Calif.
He died of complications from pneumonia, according to his nephew, Jon Connolly of Greenwich.
Born in Greenwich Jan. 21, 1923, son of the late William J. and Mary Carroll, Mr. Carroll spent his early years here, then graduated in 1941 from Port Chester High School in Port Chester, N.Y., where he was an all-county football player.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during WWII and graduated from Bucknell University in 1947, where he also played varsity football. He previously lived in Fort Wayne, Ind., and Albuquerque, N.M.
Mr. Carroll founded several businesses in northern Indiana and Albuquerque, N.M. While in Ft. Wayne, Mr. Carroll served as president of the Pine Valley Country Club.
Following his retirement in 1986, Mr. Carroll founded The Great War Society, devoted to the study of WWI and its effect on the 20th century. He became a visiting scholar at the Hoover Institute at Stanford University. Mr. Carroll served as its president for ten years. He also taught for several years at the University of Moscow. He had lived in Santa Cruz for 10 years.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Dolores "Dolly" Carroll of Santa Cruz; three daughters, Claudia Lappin of Bloomington, Ind., and Cynthia Dodzik and Christina Baker, both of Fort Wayne, Ind.; three sons, Bryan Carroll and William Carroll of Marin County, Calif. and Russell Carroll of Huntington Beach, Calif.; a brother, John Carroll of Edison, N.J., and six grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated today at St. Joseph's Shrine in Santa Cruz.

Andrew Fuchella

Andrew Fuchella, 83, a Greenwich resident, died Friday, Jan. 10, at his home.
He died of natural causes, according to his family.
Mr. Fuchella was a retired tool and die maker for AMF.
He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Byram, where he sang in the choir for 65 years. He also was a member of the Byram Rotary Club and Byram Seniors.
Born Oct. 2, 1919, in East Port Chester, N.Y., he was a son of the late Paul and Anna Frano Fuchella.
Mr. Fuchella served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He is survived by a son, Andrew R. Fuchella of Greenwich; a sister, Mary Fuchella of Greenwich; a brother, John Fuchella of Stamford; and two grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Ruth Crabtree Fuchella; and two brothers, Joseph Fuchella and Paul Fuchella.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at the Castiglione Funeral Home, 134 Hamilton Ave.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
Burial will follow in Greenwood Union Cemetery
in Rye, N.Y.

Melita Magness
January 12, 2003
Melita Caldwell Magness, 85, a lifelong Greenwich resident, died Thursday, Jan. 9, at her home.
She died of pancreatic cancer, according to her family.
Mrs. Magness was born Dec. 25, 1917, the only child of Arthur G. Caldwell and Mary Weed Caldwell of Greenwich.
She is survived by two daughters, Diane Andersen of Cos Cob and Donna Gargagliano of Riverside; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren and several cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband, John M. Magness; and a granddaughter, Dana Andersen.
Calling hours are from 3 to 6 p.m. today at Fred D. Knapp & Son funeral home, 267 Greenwich Ave.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at First Congregational Church, 108 Sound Beach Ave., Old Greenwich. Burial will follow in First Congregational Church Cemetery.

Barbara Peard

Barbara R. Peard, 70, of Duxbury, Mass., and Stuart, Fla., a former Riverside resident, died Friday, Dec. 27, at her home in Duxbury.
She died of lung cancer, according to her family.
Mrs. Peard lived in Riverside from 1958 to 1977.
An avid tennis player and former member of the Riverside Yacht Club, she was well-known as the founder of "No Grouch Tennis" and "No Grouch Bridge" and was in the process of opening a chapter of "No Grouch Golf."
She was a member of St. Paul's Church in Riverside.
Mrs. Peard and her husband were volunteer child advocates, or Guardian Ad Litems, for the 19th Circuit Court in Ft. Pierce, Fla.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Frank Peard Jr. of Duxbury and Stuart; a sister, Ann "Reifie" Reifschneider Granados of Baltimore: a son, Frank Peard III of Hinsdale, Ill.; three daughters, Jane Hamilton of New York City, Sidney P. McClure of Duxbury and Ann P. Wyatt of Norwell, Mass.; and 10 grandchildren.
Memorial services were held in Duxbury and Stuart in early January.

Julia J. Penney

Julia J. Penney, a Greenwich resident since 1954, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, at Courtland Gardens Health Care Center in Stamford. She was 91.
She died of natural causes, according to her family.
She was a founding member of the Greenwich Arts Society where she also taught oil painting. Mrs. Penney was an oil painter who sold many of her works and showed her paintings at exhibits throughout the area.
She was a member of Silvermine Guild of Arts Center in New Canaan, the New Haven Paint and Clay Club, the National Association of Women Artists, Artists Equity and others.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greenwich.
Born Aug. 31, 1911, in Chicago, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Louise Joseph.
She attended the University of Chicago where she studied art. She lived in Highland Park, Ill., before moving to Greenwich in 1954.
She is survived by a son, Richard H. Penney of Manhattan, N.Y., and Rupport,Vt.; a daughter, Marcia P. Preston of Greenwich; three grandsons; and three great-granddaughters.
She was predeceased by her husband, Horace F. Penney.
A memorial service will be scheduled for a later date at the First Presbyterian Church in Greenwich.
