Harold Russell

March 5, 2002

Harold G. Russell, 83, a 40-year Old Greenwich resident who was a retired chemical engineer and an active sailor, died Sunday, March 3, at Greenwich Hospital.

He died from complications of a stroke, according to William L. Russell of Norwalk, his son.

Born May 7, 1918, in Montreal, he was the son of the late George S. and Annie Hornsby Russell.

Mr. Russell graduated from McGill University in 1940 with a degree in chemical engineering. He was a process engineer with Bahrain Petroleum Co. until 1953, and then joined Caltex Petroleum Co. in New York City, retiring as director in 1982.

He loved ocean sailing, and traveled worldwide from the Persian Gulf to Antarctica. He was a member of the Captain Harbor Power Squadron and the Old Greenwich Yacht Club, and he was awarded the Commander's Achievement Award while in the U.S. Power Squadron. Mr. Russell was an award-winning watercolor artist and a member of the Art Society of Old Greenwich, the Greenwich Art Society and the Rowayton Art Society.

In addition to his son in Norwalk, he is survived by his wife, Anne Woodman Russell; another son, Robert W. Russell of Newport, R.I.; three daughters, Kathleen S. Mould of Danbury, Elizabeth R. Gunderson of Piedmont, S.D., and Carol McCann of Waterbury; a stepson, Kenneth McGrath of Ramona, Calif.; a sister, Dorothy Catterson of Toronto; six grandchildren and a step-granddaughter.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Scott Russell, and a brother, Gordon Russell.

A memorial service will be held at St. Savior's Episcopal Church in Old Greenwich at 11 a.m. Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Heart Association.

Arrangements are by Knapp Funeral Home.

William D. Schupp,

March 4, 2002

54, Greenwich native

William D. Schupp, 54, of Carmel, N.Y., died Friday, March 1, at the Ruth Taylor Institute in Hawthorne, N.Y.

He died of cancer, according to his family.

Mr. Schupp was a construction engineer for the city of White Plains, N.Y.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was stationed in Germany.

He was a hunter and fisher and belonged to the Putnam Fish and Game Club and the Oasis Sportsman Club.

Born Sept. 9, 1947, in Greenwich, he was a son of the late Walter and Hilda Bridge Schupp.

He is survived by his wife, Lynn Schupp of Carmel; two stepsons, James Eichenbaum of Costa Mesa, Calif., and Mark Eichenbaum of Augusta, Maine; and two brothers, Carl Schupp of Greenwich and Warren Schupp of Banksville, N.Y.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Stanwich Congregational Church, 237 Taconic Road, Greenwich. Burial will follow in Middle Patent Rural Cemetery, Banksville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Jimmy Fund, 10 Brookline Place West, 6th floor, Brookline, MA 02445-7226; or St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Doris Wright

March 5, 2002

Doris "Brooke" Wright, 53, a Stamford resident, died Feb. 10 at Stamford Hospital.

She died of lung cancer, according to her family.

Born Sept. 20, 1948, in Chicago, she was the daughter of the late John and Helen Garland Bell.

She is survived by a son, Lance Wright of Stamford; a brother, Tom Bell of Columbus, Ind., and Detroit; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

There are no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St., Stamford.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Adopt-a-Dog, 849 Lake Ave., Greenwich, CT 06831-3019.

James "Pierre" Preterotti Sr.

March 11, 2002

James "Pierre" Preterotti Sr., 79, of Cos Cob, died Saturday, March 9, at Greenwich Hospital.

He died of lung cancer, according to his family.

Mr. Preterotti owned J. Pierre Hair Designers in Riverside for 30 years. Working under the name Pierre, he spent more than 50 years in the hair design business.

He was an usher at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Riverside and an avid golfer and beach-goer.

Born Aug. 13, 1922, in Reggio-Calabria, Italy, he was the son of the late Joseph and Maria Romeo Preterotti.

Mr. Preterotti served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 10112 in Cos Cob.

He is survived by three sons, Joseph Preterotti of Cos Cob, James Preterotti Jr. of Stamford and Richard Preterotti of Stamford; a sister, Eva Masi of Cos Cob; two brothers, Joseph Preterotti of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Sam Preterotti of Stamford; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Bessie Volpe Preterotti, in 1996; and a sister, Josephine Zolluccio.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the Castiglione Funeral Home, 134 Hamilton Ave., Greenwich.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Riverside. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Greenwich.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Catherine of Siena Church, 4 Riverside Ave., Riverside, CT 06878; or the American Cancer Society, 372 Danbury Road, Wilton, CT 06897.

Harlow W. Gage, 91,

March 16, 2002

retired GM executive

Harlow W. Gage, 91, a 40-year town resident and a retired General Motors executive, died Thursday, March 14, at his home in Greenwich.

He died of natural causes, his family said.

Born Feb. 6, 1911, in Springfield, Mass., he was the son of the late Charles H. Gage and Helen Waite Gage.

Mr. Gage graduated in 1933 from Norwich University in Vermont, where he was president of his class and awarded the top rank of Cadet Major.

In 1934, he began his 42-year career with General Motors as a messenger in the New York Office.

His first overseas assignment was to Alexandria, Egypt, where he was named assistant managing director of GM in the Near East.

During World War II, Mr. Gage served in Washington , D.C., as an executive consultant with the motor transport section of the U.S. Army.

After the war, until 1962, he held positions of assistant managing director and managing director for GM in New Zealand from 1945 until 1956 and in Australia from 1956 until 1962. In 1962, he was assigned to the General Motors Overseas Main Office in New York until becoming vice president and general manager of General Motors Overseas in 1968. From 1968 until his retirement in 1976, while vice president, Mr. Gage directed General Motors Overseas Operations.

Mr. Gage is survived by his wife of 62 years, Toni Gage of Greenwich; four daughters, Patricia Nelson of Burlington, N.H., Beverly Farmelo of Fairfax Station, Va., Sally Edwards and Terry Boyd, both of Greenwich; 13 grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

A private family memorial service is planned.
