George Heider Jr.

November 14, 2001

George V. Heider, Jr., 63, a lifelong Greenwich resident, died Monday, Nov. 12, at home.

He died of natural causes, according to his wife, Janet Heider.

Mr. Heider was an appliance technician who worked for Partridge & Rockwell and General Electric during his career. He was a member of the Byram Veterans Association and the 9th District Veterans of Glenville.

Born March 1, 1938, in Greenwich, Mr. Heider was the son of the late George V. Heider Sr. and Eva LeBlanc Heider.

A Greenwich High School graduate, he was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Heider is survived by a sister, Doris Worden, of Bolton; and two nieces, Barbara Conroy of Bolton and Christine Allard, of Mansfield Center. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. tomorrow at the Leo P. Gallagher and Son Funeral Home, 31 Arch St., Greenwich. A service will follow at 4 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be private.Memorial contributions may be made to the Greenwich Boys and Girls Club, Horseneck Lane, Greenwich, CT 06830.

Rudolph Belmont

November 24, 2001

Rudolph Ernest Belmont, 75, of Cos Cob, a lifelong town resident and a retired town employee, died Friday, Nov. 23, at Greenwich Hospital.

He died of natural causes, according to his brother, James Belmont of Greenwich.

Born Aug. 9, 1926, in Greenwich, he was the son of the late Ernest and Anna Volpe Belmont.

Mr. Belmont was a retired park gardener for the town. He was an avid gardener and a devoted fan of the New York Yankees.

In addition to his brother James, Mr. Belmont is survived by four other brothers, Orlando Belmont, Sabatino Belmont, Richard Belmont and Anthony Belmont, all of Greenwich; two sisters, Lena Obuchowski of Stamford and Carmela Misuriello of Riverside; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Renaldo Belmont and Albert Belmont, and three sisters, Josephine Carbino, Mary Capalbo and Jennie Casuto.

Friends may call at the Castiglione Funeral Home, 134 Hamilton Ave., from 4 to 8 p.m. tomorrow.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Catherine of Siena Church.

Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery in Greenwich.

Barbara Johnson

Barbara Lee Johnson, 73, a resident of Ridgefield for 45 years, died Thursday, Nov. 22, at her home.

She died of cancer, her family said.

Mrs. Johnson was born April 19, 1928, in Greenwich, daughter of the late Robert A. and Mary Maher Lee. She was the wife of the late Joseph W. Johnson.

Mrs. Johnson helped establish the Ridgefield Family Y, volunteered at Norwalk Hospital for 15 years and was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Ridgefield and Sacred Heart Church in Georgetown for many years.

She is survived by her son, Lee Johnson of Danbury; two daughters, Wendy Johnson Perry of Lowell, Mass., and Lynne Johnson Briody of Ridgefield; a sister, Dorothy Pitt of Florida; a brother, Robert Lee of Florida; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Jane Murphy and Elizabeth Lee, and a brother, Frederick Lee.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Georgetown. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Ridgefield.

Friends may call at the Bouton Funeral Home, 31 West Church St., Georgetown, tomorrow from 4 to 8 p.m.

Contributions in memory of Mrs. Johnson may be made to the Whittingham Cancer Center, c/o Norwalk Hospital, 30 Stevens St., Norwalk, CT 06850 or to the Visiting Nurse Association of Ridgefield, 90 East Ridge Ave., Ridgefield, CT 06877.

Lisa Marie Banks

Lisa Marie Banks, 40, a Greenwich native who lived in Bowie, Md., died Nov. 22, at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.

She died two days after suffering a stroke, her family said.

She was born Sept. 8, 1961, in Greenwich, daughter of Florence Edith Banks and the late Philip John Banks. She attended Greenwich Catholic School, Eastern Junior High School and graduated from Greenwich High School in 1979.

Ms. Banks graduated from the University of Connecticut in Storrs in 1983 and worked with the U.S. Department of Energy upon graduation. She later worked for NASA and most recently was a systems analyst for the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington , D.C.

A direct descendent of David Banks, one of the town's first settlers, Ms. Banks was an avid traveler and made several trips to Ireland with her mother to research her ancestors there. She was a communicant of St. Hugh's Roman Catholic Church in Greenbelt, Md.

In addition to her mother, of Wilmot, N.H., she is survived by two brothers, Philip Wilbur Banks of San Pablo, Calif., and Danny Banks of Lake Sunapee, N.H.; two sisters, Theresa Francis Banks of Waterbury and Florence Elizabeth Banks of Greenwich; five nieces and four nephews; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

John Coster Steers

December 4, 2001

John "Jack" Coster Steers, 74, a lifelong Greenwich resident, died Sunday, Dec. 2, at Greenwich Hospital.

He died of complications following a heart attack, according to his wife, Claudia Steers of Greenwich.

Mr. Steers worked for more than 30 years at IBM, administering many of the company's affirmative action programs.

In retirement, he was a Eucharistic Minister of the Catholic Church at Sacred Heart in Byram. He also volunteered at The Nathaniel Witherell nursing home and Greenwich Hospital.

Born Aug. 16, 1927, in Port Chester, N.Y., he was a son of the late Charles Robert Coster Steers and Marie Gladys O'Donohue Steers.

He graduated from Iona Prep School and Fordham University.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Steers is survived by two sons, Michael Steers of Trumbull and Jay Steers of Devon, Penn.; a daughter, Claudia Cutter of Stamford; two brothers, Charles Steers of Rye, N.Y., and Henry Steers of Williamsburg, Va.; and six grandchildren.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Leo P. Gallagher and Son Funeral Home, 31 Arch St., Greenwich. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Church, 95 Henry St., Byram.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Nathaniel Witherell, 70 Parsonage Road, Greenwich, CT 06830, or to Greenwich Hospital, 5 Perryridge Road, Greenwich, CT 06830.

Archie Ibin Pharr

December 10, 2001

Archie Ibin Pharr, 28, of Norwalk, died Saturday, Dec. 8. He was killed in a car accident on I-95 in Norwalk, his father, Archie Pharr, said.

Mr. Pharr worked at Griffin Ford dealership in New Canaan. In addition, he was a student at Gibbs College in Norwalk, where he was working toward his bachelor's degree in computer science.

Born Oct. 21, 1973, in Stamford, he was the son of Archie Pharr of Norwalk and Kirby McNeill McRay of Stamford, and the stepson of Robin McRay of Stamford.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Pharr is survived by his fiancee, Kindra Jones of Norwalk; and his maternal grandmother, Lillian Striplin of Greenwich.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Community Tabernacle of Deliverance, 198 Selleck St., Stamford. A funeral service will follow, with Pastor Michael Densmore officiating.

Burial will be private.

Donations in Mr. Pharr's name may be made to the Yerwood Center, 90 Fairfield Ave., Stamford, CT 06902.

Downer Funeral Home, Inc., 31 Stillwater Ave., Stamford, is handling the arrangements.

William S. Donohue,

December 18, 2001

75; was photographer

William Samuel Donohue, 75, of Old Greenwich, died Saturday, Dec. 15, at Greenwich Hospital.

He died of natural causes, his family said.

Born in Rye, N.Y., on Oct. 3, 1926, Mr. Donohue was the son of the late Samuel and Mary Balls Donohue. A veteran of the U.S. Army who served in World War II, Mr. Donohue was a self-employed photographer.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Aquilano Donohue of Old Greenwich; a stepdaughter, Susan Louise Buck of Orlando, Fla.; two stepsons, Louis G. Skorvanek of Greenwich and Mark S. Skorvanek of Palm Bay, Fla.; and four grandchildren and a great-grandson.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Castiglione Funeral Home, 134 Hamilton Ave. Interment will be private. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. tomorrow.
