Irene (nee Podbilski) Lomitz, age 81, of East Rutherford, N.J., formerly of Bridgeport, died on Sunday, November 17, 2002. She was the beloved wife of the late William Lomitz; loving mother of the late John Felisko; and dear sister-in-law of Ann Lumas of Bridgeport. Private cremation. PECK
Donald J. Peck, age 79, of Cos Cob, died on Thursday, November 28, 2002, at St. Vincent`s Medical Center, Bridgeport. Born on October 9, 1923, in Greenwich, he was the son of Frank and Mae Peck. He graduated from Greenwich High School in 1941, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was also a volunteer fireman at the Cos Cob Firehouse for 35 years. Mr. Peck was the owner of Peel`s Hardware Store from 1951 until he retired in 1985. The store and gas station was located at 220 Post Road in Cos Cob. He was predeceased by his wife, Virginia (Peel) Peck; and his brother, Marvin Peck. He is survived by his sons, Thomas Peck and his wife, Rebecca, of Rochester, N.Y., and Christopher Peck and his wife, Davie, of Monroe; and three grandchildren, Julia, Sara and Daniel. Calling hours will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, December 2, 2002, at Fred D. Knapp & Son, 267 Greenwich Avenue, Greenwich. Burial services at Putnam Cemetery

SMITKOWSKI
Ruth F. Rose Smitkowski, RN, age 90, of Trumbull, died on Saturday, November 30, 2002, at St. Joseph`s Manor, Trumbull. She was the beloved wife of the late Paul Smitkowski. Born on January 6, 1912, in Norwalk, she was the daughter of the late George and Mary Burns Rose. She resided most of her life in Bridgeport, before moving in 1977 to Zellwood, Fla. For many years, Mrs. Smitkowski worked as a nurse at St. Vincent`s Medical Center. Survivors include several cousins, nieces, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Olive Rose Blaner; and brothers, Ward and Irving Rose. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St. Theresa Church with a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be private at the convenience of her family in St. Mary`s Cemetery, Norwalk. Friends may call on Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the Redgate-Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street, and Gorham Place, Trumbull.
NELSON
Mary Beth Nelson, a longtime resident of Fairfield, devoted soccer Mom of Michael Ashley, Nicholas and Amy Nelson, died on Friday, November 29, 2002, at Connecticut Hospice, Branford. Mary Beth was born in Greenville, S.C. She was a health food counselor for Food For Thought Norwalk. She was a generous and gentle friend of all. Survivors, in addition to her children, include one brother, James Sutherland Jr. of Texas ; one sister, Anne Nelson and her husband, Dwayne, of Fort Pierce, Fla.; two nephews, Dwayne Bradley Nelson and James Kevin Nelson; two nieces Whitney Marie Sutherland and Taylor Ann Sutherland. Friends are invited to attend her funeral service on Monday at 3 p.m. in the Larson Funeral Home, 2496 North Avenue, Bridgeport. Burial will be private. REGA
Stephen P. Rega, age 80, of Milford, husband of the late Rose Agria Rega, died on Friday, November 29, 2002, at his home. Mr. Rega was born in Bridgeport, on October 19, 1922, a son of the late Ralph and Mary Norko Rega. He was a resident of Monroe for most of his life before moving to Milford three years ago. He was a machinist at Sikorsky Aircraft in Stratford for more than 20 years before his retirement in 1984. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater. He was a member of the Stepney Baptist Church in Monroe. He is survived by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister Dolly Prusaczyk. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 3, 2002, at 10 a.m. in the Stepney Baptist Church, 423 Main Street, Monroe. Interment in Maple Grove Cemetery, Easton. WILLIAMS
Ellsworth "Ellie" J. Williams, age 87, of Milford, beloved husband of Doris Walsh Williams, died on Thursday, November 28, 2002, at Connecticut Hospice, Branford. Son of the late Harold and Ada Hotchkiss Williams, he was born on April 14, 1915, in Wallingford, and was a lifelong resident of Milford. Mr. Williams was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Along with his brother-in-law, Henry "Buster" Walsh, he was the co-owner of the former Walsh`s Book Store for 20 years until retiring in 1987. Previously, he worked for the Simon & Schuster Publishing Co., New York City, for 17 years and the Milford Transit Authority for 15 years. In addition to his wife, Mr. Williams is survived by his brother-in-law, Henry "Buster" Walsh of Milford; a sister, Betty Caneshe of Milford; a sister-in-law, Arline Freeman of Nevato, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews, including Richard Kokel of Pittsburgh, Pa. He was predeceased by a brother, Charles Williams. A service will take place on Monday, December 2, 2002, at 7:30 p.m. in the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad Street on the Green, Milford. WELCH
Laurence Welch, Ph.D., radar analyst, designer and teacher, passed on Wednesday, November 27, 2002, in Cherry Hill, N.J. Since 1978, Dr. Welch was involved in the conceptualization, design, development and field testing of sophisticated military radar systems. During his Ph.D. work (thesis), he developed a novel method for improving signal clarity whose invention was left to the open market, denying patents for corporate giants who later adopted the technique. Dr. Welch received the BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Bridgeport and Yale University, respectively. He received the Ph.D. in biomedical electronics from the University of Connecticut. During his career, he worked for United Technologies Norden Systems for 11 years. He then taught various senior EE course both as assistant and adjunct professor at the Universities of Maryland, Connecticut and Bridgeport. He is the author of several journal and conference papers for the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, where he was an active senior member. He then worked for five years at a prestigious radar consulting firm based in Washington , D.C., named Technology Service Corporation, where he advised manufacturers of major radar systems. From January 2002 until his death, he was employed as a principal member of the Radar Engineering Design team for Lockheed-Martin, Naval Electronics and Surface Surveillance, Moorestown, N.J. Dr. Welch is survived by his most beloved daughter, Kimberly Marie Welch; two brothers, Mark and Dwight Welch; his mother, Marie Welch Ericson; a niece, Kelsey Welch; and a handful of true and loving friends. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 2, 2002, at 7:30 p.m. in the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad Street, on the Green, Milford. Committal will be private. LOCKWOOD
R. Paul Lockwood, age 60, of Bethlehem, died on Friday, November 29, 2002, at his home. He was the husband of Victoria (Hutchinson) Lockwood. Paul was born on February 1, 1942, in Bridgeport, a son of the late Kenneth and Mary (Toth) Lockwood, and had lived in Bethlehem for the past 22 years. He had received his BA degree in music from Ithaca College in New York and earned his master`s degree in business from the University of Bridgeport. He was a self-employed certified public accountant, having worked in Waterbury for the past 16 years. Paul was a member of the Connecticut Society of CPA`s, the American Institute of CPA`s and a member of the Watertown Golf Course. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as a 1st lieutenant during the Vietnam War. Besides his wife of Bethlehem, he leaves a son, Mark Willett of Atlanta; three sisters, Laura Lockwood of Fairfield, Gloria Evans of Fairfield, and Alice Krenke of Stratford; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral on Monday at 7 p.m. at the O`Neill Funeral Home, 742 Main Street, Oakville. Burial will be at the convenience of his family. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 5 p.m. until the service at 7 p.m.
CAREY
Paul T. Carey, age 77, beloved husband of Margaret McDonnell Carey of Stratford, died on Friday, November 29, 2002, at his home. Born in Quincy, Mass., on April 20, 1925, son of the late Thomas and Mary McDonald Carey, Paul resided in Stratford since 1954. He was a retired engineer for General Dynamics, and retired from the U.S. Navy in 1954, having served in World War II and Korea. Paul was a member and past president of the Holy Family Retreat League, a Eucharistic minister at St. James and St. Mark Church, a member of the St. James Council Knights of Columbus, Fleet Reserve Association and DAV Chapter 1. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children and their spouses: Paul Michael and Karen Carey of Oxford, Timothy and Ida Carey of Stratford, Kathleen and Tony Malavenda of Bristol, Louise and Greg Borchardt of Sun Prairie, Wis., and MaryLee and Tom Breault of Charlton, Mass.; 10 grandchildren: Shane Malavenda, Bret and Kate Malavenda, Gretta Borchardt and her fianc, Justin Wilson, Megan Borchardt, Christopher and Tracey Breault, Jessica, Deanna Mackenzie and Kaitlyn Carey. He was predeceased by a son, Thomas Carey. Friends are invited to attend his funeral on Tuesday, December 3, 2002, at 9 a.m. from the William R. McDonald Funeral Home, 2591 Main Street, Stratford, and at 10 a.m. in St. Mark Church, for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment in Mountain Grove Cemetery, Easton.
