Joseph F. Smith, age 76, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died on Monday, July 16, 2001, at his residence. Born on March 11, 1925, in Lebanon, N.H., he lived in Haverhill, Mass., until the 1950s. He moved to Port Charlotte 15 years ago from Milford. He was a truck driver with United Parcel Service for many years before retiring. He was a member of American Cribbage Congress, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8203 of North Port, Deep Creek Elks Lodge 2763 of Port Charlotte, and American Legion Post 110 of Port Charlotte. Mr. Smith was a veteran of World War II, U.S. Army. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Eleanore L. Smith of Port Charlotte; two daughters, Sharon Plante of the Huntington section of Shelton, and Debbie Wells of West Haven; a son, David K. Hartford of Milford; a brother, Harold Smith of Brattleboro, Vt.; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Julia Colon, age 68, entered into eternal peace on Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at Bridgeport Hospital. Julia was born in Utuado, Puerto Rico, before becoming a Bridgeport resident more than 30 years ago. She was the mother of four sons, Angel Heredia of Utuado, Wilfredo Heredia of Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, Edwin Heredia and Reinaldo Heredia, both of Bridgeport; nine daughters, Nancy Cortes, Jeanette Heredia, Evelyn Heredia, Nilsa Heredia, Mildred Heredia, Lourdes Heredia, all of Bridgeport, Samia Ayala and Nydia Heredia of Providence, R.I. and Rosalina Heredia of North Carolina. She has more than 70 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends who will cherish her memory always. Funeral services will take place on Monday, July 30, 2001, beginning at 8 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Marys Church at 9 a.m. Interment will take place in St. Michaels Cemetery. Friends may attend calling hours on Sunday, July 29, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. The Funeraria Luz de Paz, 426 East Washington Avenue, Bridgeport, is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Constance M. Jaeger, age 52, died peacefully last night, Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at the Hospice Residence in Stamford of complications resulting from a brain tumor. Dr. Jaeger was in the residency program at UMass Memorial Hospital in Worcester, Mass., when she was taken ill last August. A native of Westport, she graduated from Central Catholic High School in Norwalk in 1966, and briefly attended the University of Dayton. For many years thereafter, she devoted herself to raising her son, Aaron, and to a number of local charity programs. She resumed her education in 1993, and graduated from Wichita State University in 1995. She then attended the University of Kansas Medical School, graduating with honors in May of 2000. She is survived by her son, Aaron Brenner of Middletown; her parents, Andre and Constance Jaeger of Westport; her sisters, Mary Ann Batsell of Westport, Sara Jaeger of Fairfield, and Jaina Jaeger of Norwalk; her brothers, Charles Rene Jaeger of Nevada City, Calif., Andre Jaeger Jr. of Ridgefield, Jonathan Jaeger of Westport, Kevin Jaeger of Niantic, and Bruce Jaeger of Newtown; and a number of nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions can be made to the outstanding facility in which she died, the Richard Rosenthal Hospice Residence, 1029 East Main Street, Stamford, CT 06902. A memorial service followed by a reception will be held at the Greens Farms Congregational Church, 71 Hillandale Road, Westport, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 5, 2001.

Irene (Gosnell) Lindsay, age 91, of 10 Grace Court, Bethel, wife of the late Alfred T. Lindsay, died peacefully at her home on Wednesday, July 25, 2001. She was born in Sparta, Ill., on August 26, 1909, daughter of the late Lemuel and Myrtle (Sullivan) Gosnell. She attended schools in Sparta, and was a longtime resident of Fairfield, where she was a member of St. Paul`s Episcopal Church, the Eastern Star and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carole and John Clement of Bethel, with whom she made her home; and her sister, Evelyn Kimble of Wilmington, Del.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Lindsay was also predeceased by her son, Bobby Lindsay. Cremation will take place at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Bonita Lorraine Frazier Tompkins, was called home to rest by our merciful Lord Christ on Wednesday, July 18, 2001, in Albion, Mich. Born on January 10, 1924, to Mary Pauline and Kenneth Wendell Frazier in Bridgeport, Bonita was educated in the Bridgeport school system. She married Daniel Tompkins in 1949, and from that marriage she had five children. She was a faithful member of St. Mark`s Episcopal Church, where she served as a lay reader and as a member of the church choir. Bonita resided in Bridgeport until 1990 when, for health reasons, she moved to Albion and lived with her sister, Selma. She remained there until her passing. Bonita was predeceased by her husband, Daniel Tompkins; her mother, Mary Pauline Frazier; her father, Kenneth Wendell Frazier; and two sisters, Telka Travers and Natiele Morton. She is survived by her sister, Selma Melvin of Albion; her five children, Kengerte Thornton of Sherman Oakes, Calif.; twin sons, Kempton Tompkins of Peekskill, N.Y., and Craig Tompkins of Bridgeport, Torrie Rhodes of Bridgeport, and Dayton Tompkins of Orlando, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. Services will be held on Friday (TODAY), at 7 p.m. at the George J. Peterson Funeral Home, 1041 Noble Avenue, Bridgeport. Friends may greet the family from 6 p.m. until the time of service. Interment at the convenience of the family.

Angela Cassar Agius, age 84, of Plains Road, Milford, formerly of Abram Street, Stratford, died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at Milford Hospital. She was the wife of the late Joseph Agius. Daughter of the late John and Sarah Vasselo Cassar, she was born on July 28, 1916, in Valetta, Malta, and was a resident of Stratford for more than 45 years before moving to Milford. Mrs. Agius was a former parishioner of Our Lady of Grace Church, Stratford, where she belonged to the Ladies Rosary Group. She is survived by three daughters, Mary Stephens and her husband, William, of Orange, Vivian DeRosa of Milford, and Lori Haslob of Wallingford; seven grandchildren, James, Gary and Michelle Dalby, Lisa and Sandra DeRosa, Lauren Smith, and Jason Haslob; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral from the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad Street on the Green, Milford, on Saturday, July 28, 2001, at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Grace Church, 497 Second Hill Lane, Stratford. Sally Jean Ashley, age 74, of Bridgeport, died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at Bridgeport Hospital. Born in Aspen, Va., Mrs. Ashley had been a resident of this city for more than 30 years, and was a retired home health aide. She belonged to Russell Temple CME Church, where she had been a member of the Senior Choir for many years. Survivors include one son, Joshua Jerome Ashley of San Diego, Calif.; one daughter, Jean Verna Smith of Bridgeport; two granddaughters, Kelly Lenae Smith and Robin Nicole Smith of Bridgeport; one nephew, Kenneth Dennis of Bridgeport; one niece, Lynda Bembury of Hamden; great-nephews and great-nieces; and other relatives and friends. Services will be held on Saturday, July 28, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Russell Temple CME Church, 555 Connecticut Avenue, Bridgeport, with the Rev. John A. Dillard officiating. Interment in Park Cemetery. Mary (Turczi) Turcy, age 84, of 12903 Beechwood Drive, Sun City West, Ariz., formerly of Princeton Street, Bridgport, died Monday, July 23, 2001, in Arizona. Mrs. Turcy worked for Pepperidge Farm. She is survived by her daughter, Carole Harayda; two grandsons, John and Bruce Harayda; and five great-grandsons.

Leo I. Wisbisky, age 90, died Tuesday, July 25, 2001, in Southport Manor. He was a lifelong resident of Fairfield. Mr. Wisbisky was retired from Associated Transport. He was a member of the South Norwalk Boat Club and V.F.W. Post 9427. He was predeceased by his wife, Theresa. Surviving him are his daughters, Evelyn and Mary; a sister, Sophie, and several nieces and nephews. Private funeral services were held under the direction of the Fairfield Funeral Home of Edmund W. Margaret Sutcliffe Herstein, age 84, of Bridgeport, wife of the late Saunders Herstein, died on Sunday, July 22, 2001, at St. Vincent`s Medical Center, Bridgeport. Born in England, Margaret was raised in Bridgeport and later lived in California for many years until returning to Bridgeport three years ago. She is survived by her three nieces, Kathleen Barrett of Bridgeport, Beverly McGrath Mathison and her husband, George, of Southbury, and Kathleen Crabtree of England; four nephews, Walter D. Sutcliffe of Bridgeport, William Thomas and his wife, June, of Canada, Peter Thomas and his wife, Louise, of England, and Leonard Thomas and his wife, Aida, of Spain; 13 great-nieces and great-nephews; 17 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; a very special friend, Marilyn Goldstone; and the many friends whose lives were touched by Margaret. Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. in the Frank Polke & Son Funeral Home, 1546 Fairfield Avenue, Bridgeport, with the Rev. Natalie Shiras officiating. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.
