John Lee Hopkins, 70, of New Haven, departed this life January 15, 2011. He was the widower of Mae West Hopkins.
Born in Bethel, NC, January 26, 1940, he was the son of the late Henry and Millie Hopkins.
Prior to retiring, Mr. Hopkins was employed at Yale University as a General Services Attendant.
He is survived by a daughter, Lisa Hopkins; a son, Darrell Hopkins; a brother, Henry Hopkins, Jr.; a sister, Margaret Hopkins; grandchildren, Bryon A. and Shamon Welch and Larry Wiggins; a great grandchild; an aunt, Bertha Lee Staton; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by a son, Anthony Hopkins; brothers, John T. Bullock and Isaac, David and Willie Mack Hopkins; and a sister, Helen Hopkins Brown.
A celebration of Mr. Hopkins' life and legacy will be held Saturday, January 22, 2011, at 9:00 AM at Mt. Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 100 Webster St., New Haven. Viewing and visitation will be held at the church from 8:00-9:00 AM. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Mavis E. Ward
1932 - 2010
Mavis E. Ward, 78, of Hamden, departed this life November 26, 2010.
Born in Nevis, West Indies, May 27, 1932, she was a daughter of the late George and Fredrica Ward.
Prior to retiring, she was employed at the Knights of Columbus as a Secretary. She was a member of Bethel AME Church.
Ms. Ward is survived by brothers, Rondad, Calvin, Wendell, Limington and Edmaston Ward; sisters, Francil Hull, Sylvia Claxton, Estelle Martin, Mildred Stanley and Bernice Liburd.
She was predeceased by a brother, Charles Ward.
A celebration of Ms. Ward's life will be held Saturday, December 4, 2010, at 9:00 AM at Bethel AME Church, 255 Goffe St., New Haven. Burial will be in Hamden Plains Cemetery. Viewing and visitation will be held Friday, December 3, 2010 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven.
Lillian P. Watson
1945 - 2011
Lillian P. Watson, 65, of New Haven, departed this life February 10, 2011.
Born in Newport News, VA, April 20, 1945, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Lillie Watson.
Prior to retiring, she was employed at Bank of America as a Proof Department Manager for over 30 years.
Upon retiring her favorite pass time, that brought her great joy was cashiering at Target part time.
Ms. Watson was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church where she served as Church Clerk for many years.
She is survived by daughters, Antoinette Jones Perry (Brett) and Michelle Jones; sisters, Ella Deloise Jones and Nancy Elizabeth Alberez; grandchildren; Rashard A. Jones and Hugh M. Edwards III; a great granddaughter (The Joy of her Life), Beyonce M. Jones; and a host nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A celebration of Ms. Watson's life and legacy will be held Tuesday, February 15, 2011, at 11:00 AM at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 100 Lawrence St., New Haven. Viewing and visitation will be held at the church from 9:00-11:00 AM. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
Allen H. Hudson
1924 - 2011
Allen H. Hudson, 86, of New Haven, passed on March 14, 2011.
Born in Franklin, NC, March 29, 1924, he was the son of the late Arthur and Blanche Hudson.
Mr. Hudson retired from Volvo City West as an Automobile Detailer in 1991. He was a WWII Army veteran.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his children, Brenda Hudson, Allen Hudson, Jr., Vivian Crawley (Bobby), Jeffrey Smith, Allen W. Hudson (Lisa), Vallerie Hudson-Brown (Ronnie), Vincent Hudson, Frederick Adams, Steven Adams, and Alisa Adams; fourteen grandchildren; five great grandchildren; his eldest sister, Mary Wiley; as well as a number of loving family members and friends.
Funeral service will be held Friday, March 18, 2011, at 11:30AM at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven. Viewing and visitation will be held from 10:30-11:30 AM. Burial will be in Hamden Plains Cemetery.
Giovana MaDonna Green
1955 - 2011
Giovana MaDonna Green, 56, of New Haven, went on to celebrate her birthday with the Lord on Monday, February 28, 2011.
She was a hard-working, spiritual, strong-willed and determined woman, who always did more for others than she did for herself. She was very free-spirited and open-minded.
Born in New Haven, CT, February 28, 1955, Giovana was the daughter of Rosa Lee Glenn and the late Laurencet Glenn.
In addition to her mother she leaves daughters, Tatashima McMillan, Unique Green and Bianca Campbell; sons, Jamaine and Harold Glenn; sisters, Teishea Daniels, Tamboura, Tahnee and Audrey Glenn; brothers, James and Henry Beasley and Frank Daughty; four grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by a brother, Richard Beasley; and sisters, Nancy Brown and Semyrao (Sam) Glenn-Cates.
A celebration of Ms. Green's life and legacy will be held Monday, March 7, 2011, at 10:00 AM at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven. Viewing and visitation will be held from 9:30-10:00 AM. Burial will be private.
Audrey E. Dotts Corbett
1934 - 2011
Audrey E. Dotts Corbett, 76, of Branford, departed this life January 22, 2011.
Born in Branford, CT, July 3, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Harvey and Edna Arrington.
Mrs. Corbett was employed as a Health Educator for numerous years.
She is survived by daughters, Lorraine E. Dotts and Costina E. Abdelalim; sons, George E. and Howard E. Dotts; a brother, Jackie Arrington; sisters, Bertha Lucas, Joan Barbosa and Patricia Arrington; five grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by a son, James E. Dotts, Jr.; and brothers, Kenneth, Herbert and Arthur Arrington. A memorial service to celebrate Mrs. Corbett's life and legacy will be held Saturday, January 29, 2011, at 11:00 AM at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St. New Haven.
Thomas M. Fleming, Jr.
1950 - 2011
Thomas M. Fleming, Jr., 61, of East Haven, departed this life February 13, 2011. He was the husband of Alba Fleming.
Born in Harlem, NY, February 12, 1950, he was the son of Catherine Fleming and the late Thomas M. Fleming, Sr.
Mr. Fleming attended Mercersberg Academy in PA, Syracuse University, NY and Mr. Fleming was employed at James Hillhouse High School in New Haven as Dean of Students. He was the founder of New Haven Academic Athletics Foundation (N.H.A.Peak) ; a Commissioner of Five Star Basketball Camp; a member of the Hall of Fame Committee for James Hillhouse High School, and retired head basketball coach for Hillhouse High School.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by a son, Aaron Fleming; daughters, Santasha and Valerie Fleming; brothers, James Fleming and Thomas and Wayne Brown; a sister, Audrey Blue (Dannie); grandchildren, Tiffany Wilkes-Fleming, Kyree Reaves, Daevona Allick, Jakhi Fleming, Saniya Jackson and Jaida Armstrong; a great granddaughter, Moniya Beard; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by a brother, Michael Fleming.
A celebration of Mr. Fleming's life and legacy will be held Saturday, February 19, 2011, at 10:00 AM at Bible Gospel Center, 143 Leeder Hill Dr., Hamden. Viewing and visitation will be held at the church from 8:00-10:00 AM. Burial will be private.
Johnie B. Guy Erwin

Johnie B. Guy Erwin, 81, of Hamden, departed this life January 5, 2011.
Born in York, SC, September 8, 1929, he was the son of the late Hazel Erwin and Christine Guy Martin.
Prior to retiring, he was employed at Sikorsky Aircraft as a Machine Repairman.
Mr. Guy Erwin was a US Army veteran.
He is survived by daughters, Lydia G. Anderson, Helena Cooley (Earl Jr.) and Michelle A. Erwin; sons, Johnie Brice Guy, Jr. and Johnie Brice Erwin, Jr.; ten grandchildren; four great grandchildren; his companion, Janet McCutchen; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by a son, Brian Hooker.

Ivery Griffith
1915 - 2011
Ivery Griffith, 95, departed this life peacefully at the Jewish Home for the Aged on February 16, 2011.
Mr. Griffith was born May 13, 1915, in Lake City, FL, son of the late Eugene and Liza Griffith.
He was the husband of Henrietta Griffith for over 60 years.
Ivery was predeceased by his wife; a sister, Annie G. Nalley; nephew, Marcus Nalley; great niece, June Sanders; and great nephew, Hannibal Tanner.
He leaves to cherish his memory a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A private service will be held at a later date.
