Deacon Robert Lee Payne (Bob)
1934 - 2011
Deacon Robert Lee Payne (Bob), 77, died peacefully at home on June 25th, 2011, surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was born in Valdosta, Georgia to the late Alzo Payne Sr. and Annie Mae Payne on June 17, 1934.
Robert leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Quemillar Payne, his daughter Marie Payne of Tacoma, Washington, son Dudley Flake, daughter-in-law Marcella Flake, daughter Brigitte Payne Cogswell, son-in-law Richard Cogswell, Jr., and God-daughter Brenda Cook Haynes, as well as 13 adoring grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Alzo Payne Jr. (Betty) of Melbourne, Florida and a sister, Marie Smith (Joe) of Palm Bay, Florida.
He was predeceased by his sister, Louise Bell (Alvin) of Melbourne, Florida.
Robert graduated from the Connecticut School of Electronics and was employed by Yale-New Haven Hospital as a Bio-Medical Engineering Technician. He retired from Yale New Haven Hospital in June 2006 after 38 years of service.
A celebration of Mr. Payne’s life and legacy will be held Thursday, June 30, 2011, at 10:00 A.M. at Kingdom Life Christian Church, 597 Naugatuck Ave, Milford, CT. Viewing will be held at the church from 9:00-10:00 A.M. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
Minnie Carr
1939 - 2011
Minnie Carr, 71, of New Haven, wife of the late Edward Carr, passed away November 3, 2011 at home.
Born in Georgetown, SC, December 9, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Mariah Elder.
She was a licensed Beautician and was employed at US Repeating Arms and Pratt & Whitney. Mrs. Carr was also a foster parent at Boys and Girls Village, CRI of Southington and was employed as a CNA at VNS at the time of her death.
She was a faithful member of Union Temple FWB Church for more than fifty years under the leadership of Rev. Herman Epps, where she served on the Usher Board, Missionary Board and the Epps Chorus.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory two sons, Ernest Carr (Carol) and Chris Carr; a daughter, Vanessa Carr; a brother, James Elder (Aurelia); sisters, Lillie Mae Pyatt and Diana Walker; eleven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two adopted children, Lamont Ward and Michele Green-Barham; a special niece, Maudest Walker Davis; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by sons, Kurt and Phillip Carr; brothers, William, Zack, Andrew and Joseph Elder; and sisters, Jannie Swinton and Margie Elder.
A celebration of Mrs. Carr’s life will be held Thursday, November 10, 2011, at 11:00 A.M. at Union Temple Church, 54 Platt St. (corner of Elm St.), New Haven. Friends may call at the church from 9:00-11:00 A.M. Burial will be Saturday in Georgetown, SC.
Ann Smith Sanderson
1924 - 2011
Ann Smith Sanderson, 87, of New Haven, entered into rest on November 27, 2011. Born in Ansonia, CT, July 23, 1924, she was the beloved daughter of the late Edward T. Smith, Sr. and Ruth Jones Smith.
Ann retired from the City of New Haven Board of Education where she was employed as a Paraprofessional for over 15 years. She also worked part-time at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
She is survived by her children, Barbara Godfrey and Bruce Sanderson; a sister, Eleanor Gomez; eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Ann was predeceased by brothers Edward T. Smith Jr. and Russell H. Smith.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at 12pm at Community Baptist Church, 143 Shelton Ave, New Haven.
Vivian V. Leslie
1934 - 2012
Vivian V. Leslie, 77, of Hamden, departed this life April 10, 2012. She was the widow of Willie Leslie, Sr.
Born in Atlanta, GA, April 21, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Willie Stokes and Bertha Smith Johnson.
Prior to retiring, she was employed at the Regional Visiting Nurses Association of North Haven as a Home Health Aide. Prior to the VNA, she was employed by the Burndy Corporation. Mrs. Leslie was a member of Bible Gospel Center where she served faithfully as Mother of the church.
She is survived by a daughter, Joan Leslie; sons, Willie, Jr. and Andrew Leslie; special daughters, Barbara T. Leslie, Virginia Strong, and Devra Doolin; brothers, Henry Jefferson, Darnell and Paul Johnson; sisters, Willie Mae Stokes and Barbara Brackens; granddaughters, Anitra R. Thames Knox and Tameka Jeter; four great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by brothers, Lee Rogers Smith, Edward Johnson and Herbie Stokes; and sisters, Rosalee and Debra Johnson.
A celebration of Mrs. Leslie's life and legacy will be held Thursday, April 19, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. at Bible Gospel Center, 143 Leeder Hill Dr., Hamden. Viewing and visitation will be held at the church from 9:00-10:00 A.M. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
Walter R. Hoff
1930 - 2012
Walter R. Hoff, 81, of Hamden, departed this life October 9, 2012. He was the widower of Marlene Hoff.
Born in Ansonia, CT, November 2, 1930, he was the son of the late William and Rebbie Hoff.
Prior to retiring, Mr. Hoff was employed at the former Echlin Corp. as a Machine Operator.
He is survived by sons, Walter (Jeanette), Kevin, Keith and Kenny Hoff; daughters, Patricia Hoff, Kim Chapman and Toni Foreman; a brother, John Hoff; a sister, Viola Henderson; several grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by brothers, Sylvester, Albert and James Hoff.

Yongzhi Zhu
1955 - 2012
Yongzhi Zhu, 56, of Bethany, departed this life January 20, 2012. He was the husband of Xianfen Hua.
Born in China, November 1, 1955, he was the son of Shipei and Taoshi Zhu.
Mr. Zhu was employed at Unimacts Industrial Manufacturing as a Mechanical Engineer.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters, Weifang Zhu and Jennifer Zhu.

Antoinette Rachel Green Wright
1951 - 2011
Antoinette Rachel Green Wright, affectionately known as Toni, departed this life on Wednesday, August 17th, 2011 at the age of 60, after a long and courageous battle against a rare form of cancer.
Antoinette Rachel Green was born on May 7, 1951 in New Haven, CT to David Alexander Green, Sr. and Marion Baker Green. Toni graduated from Brandeis University in Boston, Massachusetts in 1973 with a Bachelor’s Degree in African American Studies and from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT in 1980 with a Master’s Degree in Psychology. Toni was employed at St. Thomas’s Day School, initially as an assistant teacher and later became the school’s library teacher. Toni was a lifelong member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in New Haven, CT. She was also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Jack and Jill of America, Inc.
Toni leaves to cherish her memory, her beloved children Nia Wright West-Bey and her husband Jon, of Washington, DC, Challa Wright Flemming and her husband Stephen of Bridgeport, CT and Calvin Wright of Brooklyn, NY, her grandchildren whom she adored, Thurman Antwion Anderson, Ahmad Jamal West-Bey, Zuri Atiya Flemming and Naima Imani West-Bey, her mother, Marion Baker Green, her sister Victoria Woods Boyd, her brother and sister-in-law, David Alexander Green Jr. and Maria Green, and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, church family and friends.
She was predeceased by her husband, Clinton Leroy Antonio Wright and her father, David Alexander Green, Sr.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fihankra Akoma Ntoaso (FAN), the American Poetry Museum, St. Thomas’s Day School and the Edna Baker Carnegie Scholarship Fund.

Emma Louise Hill, 87, of West Haven, went home to be with the Lord, July 16, 2011. She was the widow of Albert Hill.
Emma was born on January 31, 1924, in Winston-Salem, NC, daughter of the late Charles and Bertha Anderson.
She leaves to cherish her memories, a son, William "Bill" Anderson and his wife Robbin; 8 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Emma was predeceased by brothers, Charles, Jr., Tony and Lucky Anderson; and sisters, Ethel Anderson and Byrd Phillips.

Laura J. Moye, 58, of Hamden, departed this life July 16, 2011. She was the wife of Melvin Moye.
Born in Palmico County, NC, March 2, 1953, she was the daughter of James O. Collins, Sr. and the late Sarah E. Collins.
Mrs. Moye was employed by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft as an Inspector and was a member of Living Word Ministries.
In addition to her husband and father she is survived by sons, Jason Collins (April) and Christopher Collins; brothers, Dallas Collins, James O. Collins, Jr. (Donarine), Herman J. Collins (Lorna) and Kenneth L. Collins (Tammi); a sister, Barbi Collins; grandchildren, Hailey, Sebastian and Jason Collins.

Madeline Hundley Harris
1947 - 2011
Madeline Hundley Harris affectionately known as “Midget” was born on July 9, 1947 in New Haven, Connecticut to the late Arthur T. Hundley and Madeline Barnes Hundley.
Madeline was employed at St Raphael Hospital for many years until the time of her illness.
Madeline leaves to cherish her memory, a daughter Lynn Harris of New Haven, one sister Edith Hundley Rawls of New Haven, brother Clarence “Joe” Hundley of Hamden, a special cousin Paulette Hundley of Virginia, and aunts Ethel Tolson and Edith Gore both of New Haven. Madeline was predeceased by her son Rodney A. Hundley. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Mrs. Harris' life and legacy will be held Saturday, September 24, 2011 at 9:00 A.M. at St. Martin DePorres Church, 136 Dixwell Ave.(corner of Dixwell and Webster St.), New Haven. Viewing will be held at the church from 8:00-9:00 A.M. Burial will be in Hamden Plains Cemetery.
