John E. Gallagher

John E. Gallagher, age 74, of Brewster, N.Y., died Sunday, June 1, 2003, in Danbury.
John was born February 12, 1929, in New York, N.Y., to John E. and Anna C. (Healy) Gallagher. His step-father was Peter Gallagher. He attended schools in New York City and while in the Navy, he served on the U.S.S. Saipan.
John married Joan McDermott on November 10, 1951, in the Bronx. John was a 40 year resident of Brewster, having worked as a butcher for Kobackers Supermarket for many years, as well as a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Lawrence Council no. 1495.
He had lived in the Bronx prior.
John was an avid fisherman, very proud of his years in the Navy and the Knights of Columbus, and most importantly, he adored his grandchildren.
John is survived by a son, Jack Gallagher, of North Salem, N.Y.; five daughters, Ellen Gallagher, of Manhattan; Peggy Gavin and her husband Shay Gavin, of Bethel; Ginger Corrao and her husband David Corrao, of New Fairfield; Teresa Gallagher Lewis and her husband Nelson, of New Fairfield; and .Joan Goold and her husband Walter, of North Chatham, N.Y.; also ten grandchildren, Bob and Katie Gallagher, Matthew, Meghan, and Theresa Corrao, Sean, Aislinn and Kara Gavin, and Hayley and Jack Goold.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, 11 a.m., at St. Lawrence O’Toole Church, Brewster. Interment following at St. Lawrence O’Toole Cemetery, Brewster.
Friends may call at the Beecher Funeral Home, 1 Putnam Avenue, Brewster, on Tuesday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Blanch F. Perry

Blanche F. Perry, age 87, of Danbury, died on Sunday at New Milford Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Frank O. Perry, Jr.
Mrs. Perry was born in Danbury on July 27, 1915, a daughter of the late Clifford A. and Helen L. (Blanchard) Fowler. A lifelong Danbury resident, she was a 1934 graduate of Danbury High School. She worked for over 20 years as a secretary at Sears, Roebuck & Co., retiring in 1975. Always active in the community, Mrs. Perry was a 63 year member of the National and State Grange, the Redding Grange, and the Danbury Grange, where over the years she held several offices.. During WW II she was an Air Raid Warden. She was a member of AARP Chapter 1067, the VFW Auxiliary, Girl Scouts, and the Danbury Tower Senior Citizen Activity Group. She also participated in the yearly Red Cross Drive. Mrs. Perry was an active member of St. James Episcopal Church, where she served on the Altar Guild, was the assistant choir master, and a Sunday School teacher.
Mrs. Perry is survived by a son, Malcolm C. “Bud” Perry and his wife Krista, of Danbury; two grandsons, Mark C. Perry, of Mich.; and Michael C. Perry, of N.Y.; and two great granddaughters, Megan and Molly.

The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, at 11 a.m., at the Hull Funeral Home, 60 Division St., Danbury. Interment will follow at Kenosia Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, from 10 a.m., until the time of the service at 11 a.m.
Maria de Jesus Costa

Maria de Jesus Costa, age 68, of Danbury, died Saturday May 31, 2003, at Danbury Hospital. She was the wife of the late Anibal Bernardo.
She was born in Portugal, July 12, 1934, daughter of the late Jose Augusto and Virginia (de Jesus) Costa. She was employed by Danbury Hospital in their housekeeping Department. Prior to Danbury Hospital, she was employed by American Radionics.
She is survived by a son, Jose Bernardo, of New Milford; two daughters, Maria Rosa Luis and Maria Elizabete LLiguicota, both of Danbury; a brother, Jose Augusto Costa, of Portugal; her grandchildren, Leena Bernardo, Stephanie Bernardo, Eric LLiguicota and Sandra Luis.
Funeral Services and Burial will be held in Lousa, Portugal, at the direction of the family.
Friends will be received at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, on Wednesday, from 5 to 8 p.m.
Frank J. Frederick

Frank J. Frederick Jr., of New Fairfield, formerly of St. James, N.Y., died June 2, 2003, at Danbury Hospital.
He was born to Anna and Frank Frederick in Queens, N.Y., on Oct. 24, 1919.
He was a professional engineer and graduate of Pratt Institute, Class of 1941. He retired from the Long Island Lighting Company in 1980, after 32 years of service.
He was a life member of the St. James Fire Department and one of the original founding members of it’s ambulance squad. He was a past Master of the Masons and an active member of Suffolk Lodge No. 60.
He was predeceased by his wife, Frances (Tushenske) Frederick, of 34 years and by his second wife, Alice (Howell) Frederick, of 14 years.
Mr. Frederick is survived by his three children: Patricia Martinsen and her husband Ralph of St. James, Richard Frederick and his wife Donna, of Albany; and William Frederick and his wife Florence, of New Fairfield. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Brook Moos and her husband Joe, of Mt. Sinai, N.Y., Jessica McKay and her husband Joe, of Nashville, Tenn., Karen Martinsen, of Alexandria, Va.; Stephen Martinsen, of Palm Beach, Fla.; Chad Frederick, of Douglasville, Ga.; Kelli Frederick, of New York City; and Bryan Frederick, of New Fairfield.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, June 6, at 11 a.m., at St. James Episcopal Church, 25 West St., Danbury.

Joan L. (Bachman) Tice

Joan L. (Bachman) Tice, 80, of Valerie Lane Danbury, was carried into the arms of God at Danbury Hospital on Sunday, June 1, 2003, after a full life.
She was born on May 31, 1923, in Bronxville, N.Y., daughter of the late Joseph L. and Hermine (Kasper) Bachman. Joan lived her early years in Scarsdale, N.Y. She graduated in 1941 from Rosemont College in Pennsylvania , with a B.A. degree in biology. After graduation she began a career in biology as a laboratory researcher for Flieshmanns, Inc. and New York Hospital. Later in life she worked and retired from Northeast Utilities in 1986, as an administrative assistant. Upon retiring, she became an avid traveler, exploring many parts of the world, including Europe, the Caribbean, Alaska and Hawaii. Her favorite was the ocean and loved to walk the beaches.
Joan was a parishioner of St. Gregory the Great Church and served as a eucharistic minister for the church, and volunteered in many ways, including attending the church garden and caring for the alter guildes. She enjoyed gardening, walking and sewing.
She will be missed by her loving husband, Kenneth R. Tice, and two daughters, Linda Carroll of Danbury; and Debra Taylor of Shorewood, Wisc. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Kristin, Ashley and Jonathan Carroll, and Jason, Emily and Rebecca Taylor.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Gregory the Great Church, on Tuesday at 11:15 a.m., with burial to follow, at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne N.Y.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White St., Danbury, between 10 and 11 a.m.

Thomas A. McGovern

Thomas A. McGovern of Danbury, formerly of Briarcliff Manor, died on May 30, 2003.
He was born to Frances and Thomas McGovern on March 2, 1933. He was a 1954 graduate of the College of Holy Cross. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. On July 16, 1955, he married Miriam Howley. He retired as vice president of services at Consolidated Edison in 1994, after 37 years of service.
Besides his wife, Mimi, he is survived by his three daughters, Cecilia, Louise and Pam; his son-in-law, Mike Amodio and his beloved granddaughter, Claire Amodio.
Viewing will take place at the Waterbury and Kelly Funeral Home, 1300 Pleasantville Road, Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., on Monday and Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Theresa’s Church, Briarcliff Manor, on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Interment will be at St. Lawrence O’Toole Cemetery, Brewster.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Diabetes Association, would be appreciated.
Helen Greenbaum

Helen (Weinberg) Greenbaum, 79, of New York City, NY and Delray Beach, FL, formerly of Kent, CT, born December 7, 1923, died suddenly on April 19, 2003. She was the daughter of Morris and Pauline Weinberg and is survived by her husband of 61 years, Milton; son, Stan and wife, Paula Cassidy, of New Milford and Kent, CT; daughters, Gail Greenbaum, of New York City, NY and Eileen Greenbaum and husband Larry Mintz of Chevy Chase, MD, and East Hampton, NY; grandson, Dan and wife, Jill, great-grandson, River, of Kent; grandsons, Jonathan Greenbaum and Larry Cassidy of Kent; grandson, Mark of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, U.K.; granddaughter, Alyssa Cassidy of New Milford, CT; grandson, David and granddaughter, Robin of New York City; granddaughter, Melissa Landfield of Chevy Chase, MD; sister, Irma Hoffman of Hollywood, FL; and brother, Seymour Weinberg of Delray Beach, FL.
Helen graduated from Grover Cleveland High School in New York City in 1940. In the 1980s she took courses at Hunter College and at Fordham University College past 60. In the early 1960s she was an executive secretary at Adelphi University in Garden City, NY and from 1962 to 1976 owned and operated Camp Kenico in Kent, CT with husband, Milt. They developed the camp into Smiling Forest Campground in 1972. In the late 1970s they moved to New York City where she was an executive secretary, most recently with Takeda Pharmaceuticals, retiring in 1987.
Helen loved the outdoors and travel. She enjoyed photography and in the 1990s became an accomplished watercolor painter with many landscapes of Central Park in New York City and other places she loved to visit. From 1986 to 1997, Helen and Milt were world travelers, taking month-long trips to Asia, Europe, Mexico, Alaska and throughout the United States and Canada.
Helen was closely connected to her immediate family by phone and frequent visits. She lived life well and her legacy is in the lives of the family and people she touched and counted as friends.
A memorial service was held at Riverside Memorial Chapel on April 21, 2003 followed by a memorial luncheon at a favorite restaurant, Café D’Artistes. Jane L. McCarthy

Jane L. McCarthy, 84, of Ridgefield Crossings, Ridgefield, CT, wife of the late John J. McCarthy, died at the Danbury Hospital on Thursday, May 29, 2003.
She was born in Cohoes, NY, February 10, 1919, daughter of the late Clarence T. and Leona (Baker) Wright. She grew up in Cohoes and was a graduate of the College of St. Rose in Albany, where she was a member and award winner on the equestrian team. Mrs. McCarthy moved to Weston, CT in 1955 and resided there until she moved to Ridgefield in 1998. She had been a member of St. Francis Church in Weston, Our Lady of Grace Church in Bantam and St. Mary Church in Ridgefield. She had been an active volunteer for many organizations including American Red Cross Blood Drives; F.I.S.H. of Westport and had been active with local Bible Study groups for more than 40 years.
Jane is survived by a son: Robert J. McCarthy and his wife, Carol, of New Milford; a daughter: Barbara O’Connor and her husband Tim of Newtown; her sister-in-law, Ruth L. McCarthy of Ridgefield, with whom she resided; grandchildren: Bronwyn McCarthy and Meghan McCarthy, Kathy Elliott and her husband Don, Timothy O’Connor and his wife, Kimberly, Karen O’Connor and her fiancé, Steven Kravec; great-grandchildren, John Elliott, Brendan Elliott and Grace O’Connor; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and her parents, Jane was predeceased by four brothers, Harry Wright, Richard Wright, Joseph Wright and Robert Wright.

Boyd Hanauer

Boyd Hanauer, 82, of Newtown, beloved husband of Barbara Dailey Hanauer, died Tuesday, April 8, after a long illness.
Mr. Hanauer was born in Hartford in 1920, the only child of Emma Manning and Ignatz Hanauer. He is survived by two grand-nephews, Daniel Alshular of Puerto Rico; and Daniel’s brother in Germany; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gilbert and Betty Dailey of Brooklyn, Conn.; and nieces and nephews by marriage: Aileen and John Saari of Stonington, Bonnie and Mike Mooney, of Brooklyn, Brian Dailey of Moosup, and Richard and Shirley Davis of Danielson. Boyd is also survived by devoted “surrogate” nieces and nephews, Susan and Ron Berube of Brookfield and Gary and Linda Frenette of Woodbury. All who called him “Uncle Boyd,” including his many grandnieces and nephews and his godchildren, will miss him terribly.
Boyd was raised in Weston and lived in Savannah, Ga., before settling in Newtown after his marriage to Barbara in 1955. He worked as a project manager for the Connecticut State Public Works Department until his retirement. Among his many job sites was Newtown’s Fairfield Hills Hospital. He was a veteran on World War II, serving in the Army Air Corps as both a navigator and bombardier assigned to squadrons in the South Pacific. Flying was an avocation of Boyd’s during his years in the southern states, but he was best known for his love of vintage race cars. During the 1950s and 1960s he was a well-known figure at race tracks and fairgrounds along the east coast driving his pre-war Miller. Later he drove his famous Ford V8/60 Midget, which he had built in 1937. Boyd was instrumental in establishing the Atlantic Coast Old Timers Auto Racing Club, an organization of car owners and drivers dedicated to preserving and exhibiting vintage American race cars throughout the Northeast. Boyd was the club’s Antique Racing Director, a position he capably held for 14 years, until 1997.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated today at the St. Rose of Lima Church, 46 Church Hill Road, Newtown, at 11 a.m. Burial will be at St. Rose Cemetery.

Charles P. Chelso

Charles P. Chelso, 88, of Danbury, husband of the late Anne (Viskup) Chelso, died at the Village at Brookfield Commons on Thursday, April 10, 2003.
Charles was born in Danbury September 2, 1914, son of the late George and Louise Chelso. He attended St. Peter School and Danbury High School.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre, with the 4th Armored Division under General George Patton, and was engaged in the Battle of the Bulge.
Charles entered the Danbury Police Department in 1947 and served as Captain of Detectives when he retired in 1974. He also went on to serve as a Deputy Sheriff at the Superior Court in Danbury for more than twenty years.
He was a member of the Amerigo Vespucci Lodge, St. Peter Church, Police Benevolent Association and the VFW of Danbury, and was a lifetime member of the Association of the 4th Armored Infantry Division.
Charles is survived by his daughters, Carlea A. Moffa, and husband, Chuck, of New Milford, and Marcia J. Chelso, and fiancé, Thomas Welsh, of Putnam Lake, NY; as well as his granddaughters, Brooke Moffa and Blaine Moffa; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also predeceased by his brothers, Joseph, Eugene and Chester Chelso.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter Church on Monday morning at 9:00 a.m.
Burial will be in St. Peter Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, on Sunday afternoon from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m.

Bigelow Paine Cushman

Bigelow Paine Cushman died on April 9, 2003 at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Bronxville, NY on August 14, 1928 and grew up in West Redding, CT. After graduating from the Loomis School in 1946, he won an English Schoolboy Fellowship to attend Haileybury and Imperial Service College in Hertfordshire, England. A 1951 graduate of Cornell University, he received his commission and served as 2nd Lt. in the US Army in Germany during the Korean War.
He holds a Master’s degree from the University of Connecticut and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He taught at the University of Delaware and at Western Connecticut State University, from which he holds the rank of Professor Emeritus.
A summer resident of Deer Isle since 1968, he retired to his home there in 1986. After his retirement, he served with the Literacy Volunteers of America and as a member of the Board of the Island Medical Center. He sang with the choir and was on several committees of the First Congregational Church of Deer Isle. He was a founding member of the Blue Hill Peninsula Parkinson’s Disease Support Group. At the time of his death, he was engaged in writing the life of his grandfather, Albert Bigelow Paine, a prolific author and journalist, who was the official biographer and literary executor of Mark Twain.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Anne Toffey Cushman; his daughter, Charlotte Cushman of St. George, ME; his son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Sandra Cushman, and two grandsons, Samuel and Simon, all of Charlottesville, VA. He is also survived by a sister, Joy Bonner Cushman of Jensen Beach, FL; nieces, Holly Lasagna of Auburn, ME, Joy Oosten of Richland Center, WI, and Robin Hickerson of Woodbridge, CT; and a nephew, Eric Cahow of Providence, RI; as well as six grandnieces and nephews. He was predeceased in 1985 by a daughter, Catherine.
He will be remembered for his love of teaching and of Maine, his sense of humor, and his devotion to his family and to the Boston Red Sox.
