Mary Ann Bancroft
Funeral services for Mary Ann Bancroft, a lifelong resident of Towaoc, were held Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel at 2 p.m. Sister Lois Wooten of The Chapel officiated. Interment was at the Towaoc Cemetery.
Mary Ann was born in Cortez on Nov. 11, 1953, to Juan Bancroft and Corrine Cuthair Bancroft. She passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital on Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at the age of 45.
She is survived by her husband, Juan Peabody Sr., of Towaoc; daughters, Titania Dooley, of Towaoc, Stephanie Bagnato, of Weaverville, Calif., and Melinda Walton, of Bloomfield, N.M.; six grandchildren; two sisters, Pearl Root Laner, Florence Cuthair Bancroft Silas; and her brother, Freddie Bancroft.
Services were conducted by the Ertel Funeral Home.
Patsy Nadine Ihnen
Funeral services for Patsy Nadine Ihnen were held Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 10 a.m. Elder Harry Burdick officiated. Interment will be held in Massena, Iowa beginning with funeral services at the Massena Baptist Church on Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999 at 1 p.m. Burial will follow at the Massena Center Cemetery.
Patsy was born in Anita, Iowa on Jan. 20, 1939, to Elwood Jensen and Marie (Odem) Jensen. She died at Southwest Memorial Hospital on Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999. She was 60 years old. Patsy and John Herman Ihnen were married Apr. 6, 1958, in Massena, Iowa. This past year they had celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. Patsy and John moved to Cortez in 1980. She was a member of the Humane Society.
She leaves behind her loving family which consists of her husband, John, of Cortez; two daughters, Sue Ihnen and Donna Ihnen, both of Laughlin, Nev.; two sons and their wives, Tim and Dody Ihnen, and Terry and Trish Ihnen, all of Cortez; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and two sisters and their husbands, Kay and Jim Olson, and Peggy and Jerry Carr, all of Corning, Iowa. Her son, Mark Ihnen, preceded her in death in December of 1979.
Services were conducted by the Ertel Funeral Home.
Ruth Irene Kibel
Funeral services for Ruth Irene Kibel, a longtime resident of Dove Creek, were held Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at the Dove Creek First Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Burial took place at the Dove Creek Cemetery.
Ruth, the eldest of nine children, was born March 6, 1929, in Kingstown, Kans., to David A. and Ruby Irene (Stice) Smith. She passed away at her home in Dove Creek on Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at the age of 70.
On May 15, 1944, Ruth married Ross C. Kibel in Sharon Springs, Kans. They moved to the Slickrock / Dove Creek area in the early 1950s. There she raised her 14 children. She was a loving wife and mother.
Ruth's other interests included crocheting and sewing and was involved with the Cahone Recreation Center.
Ruth leaves behind eight sons, Gerald Kibel, and his wife, Leatha Kaie, of Lakewood, Colo., Wayne Kibel, and his wife, Dorothy, of Grand Junction, Colo., Dale Kibel, of Elko, Nev., David Kibel, of Grand Junction, Colo., Ross Kibel, of Cortez, Gary Kibel and Larry Kibel, both of Dove Creek, and Tony Kibel, of Grand Junction, Colo.; six daughters, Ruby Shore, and her husband, Alvin, of Bosque Farms, N.M., Phyllis Mulvey, of Sacramento, Calif., Darlene Perkins, of Cañon City, Colo., Hazel Pursse, of Denver, Colo., Ruth Wassemiller, and her husband, Jerry, of Oakley, Kans., and Verna Meyers, of Canton, Kansas. She has 29 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Ruth is also survived by five brothers, Dan Smith, of Alliance, Neb., Paul Smith, of Pine Bluffs, Wyo., Raymond Smith, of Abilene, Kans., Gene Smith, of Yuma, Colo., and Dean Smith, of Goodland, Kans.; and two sisters, Helen Paramore, of Little Rock, Kans., and Florence Beal, of Brigsdale, Colo.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ross Kibel, in November of 1982, and by a brother, Arthur Smith.
Services were under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.
John Leonard Pinder
Funeral services for John Leonard Pinder, 65, of Lewis, were held Wednesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church beginning at 10 a.m. Burial followed at the Summit Ridge Cemetery. Father Kevin Novack officiated.
John was born in Leon, Iowa, to Estella Laura Shields Pinder and John E. Pinder on Sept. 26, 1933. He passed away at his home in Lewis on Friday, Sept. 24, 1999.
John married Josephine Mary Arriola in Raton, N.M., on Aug. 22, 1952.
The 28 years that he served with the Denver Police Department are marked with many notable achievements. He was the first officer in his department to be a K-9 handler and he reached the Master Rank as a police combat shooter.
John worked as a detective for five years and in March of 1970, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant, which he held until his retirement in 1985. John was also a Navy veteran.
His memberships included the National Rifle Association and the Police Protective Association. He acted as a shooting instructor and assisted the Montezuma County Sheriff's Department. He was an avid sportsman, enjoyed scuba diving, and in his retirement, building log houses.
John leaves behind his wife, Josephine M. Pinder, of Lewis; a daughter, Connie F. Pinder, of Denver; two sons, John E. Pinder, and his wife, Karen, of Denver, and Donald J. Pinder, of Lewis; and his three grandchildren, Kisha Ann Pinder, Christopher John Pinder, and Elizabeth Colleen Pinder.
Memorial contributions can be made to St. Jude's Catholic Church, Dove Creek, Colo. 81324. Services were under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.
Robert Lee Loos
A memorial service for Robert Lee Loos, long-time Durango resident, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at Hood Mortuary Chapel. Mr. Loos passed away Sept. 28. He was 54.
Mr. Loos was born Sept. 8, 1945, to DeLasso and Billie Nell Loos in Duncan, Okla.
He lived in the Durango area for most of his life, and is a 1963 graduate of Durango High School. He graduated from Fort Lewis College in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Robert married Deborah Sittner on April 30, 1967, and taught school from 1970-73 in Zuni, N.M., and in Ignacio from 1973-86. He also coached track and football at those schools.
Robert started his own business, L & R Trading Company, which dealt in Indian jewelry from 1971-1973. He was also a real estate salesman with Campbell Realty in 1978.
Robert Loos served as a county delegate to the State Political Assembly in 1978.
Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1972, he became president of the Central Colorado Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in 1983, and was chosen by members as the Multiple Sclerosis Father of the Year that same year.
In 1984, he was chosen by Fort Lewis College Alumni to serve on the Alumni Board of Directors. He was also chosen as teacher of the year in Ignacio in 1987.
He enjoyed hunting, camping, outdoor activities and music, serving as DJ at many high school dances in Ignacio during his teaching years.
Robert Loos is survived by his parents, DeLasso and Billie Nell Loos of Durango; daughter, Sonya Meador of Hesperus; son, Justin Loos of Durango; brothers Phillip Loos of Colorado Springs and Richard Loos of San Antonio, Texas; sisters, Anita Zellitti of Durango and Kim Rayburn of Odem, Texas; his former wife, Deborah Rowe of Durango; and granddaughters Kaylynne Loos of Durango and Lacey Jo Meador of Hesperus.
Memorial contributions may be made to the National MS Society, Colorado Chapter, 1777 S. Harrison, Suite 200, Denver, Colo. 80210; or to the Robert Lee Loos Memorial Fund, c/o First National Bank, Durango, Colo. 81301. The latter fund has been set up for the college tuition of Robert’s grandchildren.
Services are under the direction of Hood Mortuary, Durango.
Ellen L. Britton
Funeral services for Ellen L. Britton, 87, of Larchwood Inns in Grand Junction, Colo., and former Cortez resident, will be held Friday, Oct. 1, 1999 at the Bethel Baptist Church beginning at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at the Summit Ridge Cemetery. Pastor Brad Ramsey will officiate. Visitation is scheduled for Friday morning from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the Ertel Memorial Chapel.
Mrs. Britton was born to Harry Lee and Fannie (Reno) Waters on July 19, 1912, in Pattonsburg, Mo. She passed away at Community Hospital in Grand Junction on Monday, Sept. 27, 1999.
Ellen married Clarence C. Britton in Kim, Colo., on April 16, 1930. He passed away in Dec., 1987.
During her lifetime, it was Ellen's custom to make quilts for all of her children and grandchildren. It was especially hard on Ellen when several years ago she had a stroke and was unable to resume her quilting for her beloved family.
Prior to her move to Grand Junction, Ellen was very involved with the Cortez Senior Center. She found that commitment to be very important to her.
Those left behind are her children and their spouses, Clifford and Kay Britton, of Grand Junction, Colo., Philip Britton, of Raymond, Alberta, Canada, Hazel and Brown Stratton, of Grand Junction, Nora and Fred Like, of Folsom, N.M., Larry and Ardie Britton, of Cortez, and Lois and Charles Rogers, of Osborn, Mo.; 21 grandchildren, 23 great- grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; a brother Lyman Waters, of Dolores; and a sister, Emma Kinkade, also of Dolores.

Ernest Edward 'Ed' Higman
Memorial services for Ernest Edward (Ed) Higman, a lifelong resident of Cortez, will be held at the Ertel Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, beginning at 2 p.m. Ed passed away at his home on Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999. He was 85 years old.
Edward was born the fourth child of Mary Ann (Wellington) and Ernest Higman on Jan. 5, 1914, in Beulah, Colo. Ed resided in the Beulah community for the first 23 years of his life. He attended Beulah Grade School and Cortez High School.
On January 2, 1938, Ed married Leona Ruth Smith in Cortez. Ed was hired as an apprentice baker at the Kermod's Cortez Bakery. After Ed was injured at the bakery, he and his lifelong friend, Charles Hampton, became loggers near Mancos.
Ed and Ruth moved to Denver in the early 1940's where Ed worked once again as a baker. He answered draft calls during World War II but did not serve in the military.
Ed began his highway maintenance career in Montezuma County and in 1949 a promotion took the couple to the San Luis Valley. Ed worked out of Alamosa and Del Norte.
After 30 years of plowing snow, much of which was on Wolf Creek Pass, Ed retired in 1976. Ed and Ruth returned to Cortez where they lived an active retirement. Ruth died August 26, 1996.
Preceding him in death were his parents, an infant brother, Leslie Hart, his sister, Marjorie (Herman) Hampton, three brothers, Ralph, Ronald, and Cecil Higman. A sister, Kate (Ace) Asa survives him as do his family of nieces and nephews.
Ed was past president of the San Luis Valley Firemen's Association, and Past Grand Chancellor of the Coronado Lodge 25 of the Knights of Pythias in Del Norte. He was also a member of the Cortez Fire and Rescue team. He was a skilled fisherman, golfer, bowler and hunter.
Ed was a devoted father and mentor to his many nieces and nephews and will always be remembered for the lessons he taught them.
Memorial contributions can be made in Ed Higman's name with the Cortez Volunteer Fire Department. Ertel Funeral Home will be directing the services.
Marjorie Fern Abeln Garza
Funeral services for Marjorie Fern Abeln Garza, 77, of Cortez, will be held Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 2 p.m. Mr. Hunt Zumwalt of the Cortez Church of Christ will officiate. Cremation will follow the services.
Mrs. Garza passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital on Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999. She was born in Garden City, Kansas, to Ray and Margaret McDermott Likes on Nov. 13, 1921. Marjorie worked as a nurse at Southwest Memorial Hospital for more than 20 years.
Her children, Harold Abeln, and his wife, Susan, of San Clemente, Calif., Bill Abeln, of Farmington, N.M., and Marsha Jones, and her husband, Charles, of Pasadena, Texas, survive her. She also leaves behind nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and her sister, Velma Tate, of Farmington, N.M. Her son, Louis "Darrell" Abeln preceded her in death as did her two husbands, Louis J. Abeln, in 1964, and Al Garza in 1983.
Marjorie's five brothers, Dale, Wayne, Raymond, Clarence, and Kenneth, also preceded her in death.
