Carol Moore
November 17, 2005
Carol Moore, 88, was born Oct. 14, 1917, in Minden, Neb.; she died Nov. 9, 2005, at her home in Basalt.
Carol was the daughter of Calvin S. and Winfred Pearl (Mooney) Rogers.
She married Harley Moore on March 31, 1950, in Minden.
Carol was dedicated to her family and friends.
She loved to read, knit and cook, and she loved bird-watching.
She was best-known for her french fries at the Charcoal Burger in Basalt from 1976-90.
She was a member of P.E.O. Chapter AR.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Gwen Moore.
She is survived by her husband, Harley Moore; son John (Butch) Moore; daughter Jean Moore; brother John Rogers; and Jo Applegate and Joclyn Loyd.
The family suggests memorials can be made to Roaring Fork Hospice, P.O. Box 1970, Glenwood Springs, CO 81601.
A memorial service will take place at the Farnum-Holt Funeral Home Chapel, 405 W. Seventh St., Glenwood Springs, at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19.
Bob Larson will officiate.
Farnum-Holt has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Muriel Cook Delaplane

Muriel Cook Delaplane, known as "Cookie, " died on Nov. 14 in a hospital in China. She was 83 years old.
Cookie was born in Atlanta on Nov. 7, 1922. She graduated from Wheaton College in Illinois, Columbia Bible College in South Carolina and Atlanta Law School in Georgia. She also studied art in Paris.
Cookie lived in Fort Pierce, Fla., and Stuart, Fla., for approximately 50 years.
She recently sold a 16 1/2-acre plot on the St. Lucie River in Stuart to Martin County, which made it into a game preserve.
Cookie was an avid skier and spent winters in her home in Aspen.
She became an internationally known portrait artist; her work hangs in many collections, including those of Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford and John Wayne.
Her portrait of Alabama Gov. Fob James hangs in the rotunda of the state Capitol.
She is survived by a sister, Beverly Ensign of Forsyth, Ga., and a brother, Dr. H. Robert Cook Jr. of San Diego.
Memorial services will take place in Stuart, Fla., and Aspen at a future date.
Fay Albert Detweiler

Fay Albert Detweiler, 82, died Nov. 4, 2005, at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs. He was 81.
Fay was born Nov. 5, 1923, in Elko, Nev. Fay was an avid outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman.
He was a ski instructor at Snowmass and a fly-fishing instructor and guide on the Fryingpan River and the Roaring Fork River.
He had lived in the area for more than 40 years.
During his childhood and adolescent years, before his joining the Marine Corps, he spent much of his free time hunting and fishing with his parents and sister. He was the son of Fay Everett and Emma Myrtle (Wiggins) Detweiler.
He married Patricia Porreca on Jan. 12, 1972, in Aspen.
She preceded him in death.
He is survived by his sister, Betty Detweiler Marksheffel of Clarksburg, Wash., a nephew, Edward E. Marksheffel, and a niece, Fredericka A. Markscheffel, both of Ketchikan, Alaska.
The family suggests that contributions to the Arthritis Foundation or the charity of your choice.
Funeral arrangements are being made with Farnum-Holt Funeral Home in Glenwood Springs.
Laura O. Cruz

Laura O. Cruz, beloved mother of Catalina Cruz, passed away on Dec. 2, 2005, after a five-month battle with cancer.
Laura was born in Santiago, Chile, and married Hernan Cruz Vial, an attorney-at-law, in 1955. He preceded her in death in 1973.
The couple emigrated to New York City in 1960 where Laura worked for the Chilean consulate and later for Venezuelan airlines.
She traveled the world with her daughter, Catalina, and adored history, art and culture.
She loved the sunshine and warm weather of Miami where she lived for 25 years after leaving New York.
She moved to Aspen to live with her daughter in 1995.
Laura will be most remembered for her contagious laugh, wonderful sense of humor, great stories, incredible memory and ability to give boundless love.
She was a most loving and caring mother, and a true friend.
She will be missed by many, but her spirit continues to live in all those who knew her and loved her.
There will be a memorial Mass at St. Mary's Church in Aspen at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17.

Edward Nichols

Edward A. Nichols Sr. died peacefully in his sleep on Dec. 6, 2005. He was 76 years old.
Ed was born in St. Paul, Minn., on Oct. 2, 1929.
He was proud to serve in the Navy during World War II.
He rejoined with the Marines during the Korean War.
In 1953, he married the love of his life, Marion Engquist.
Ed moved his family to Aspen in 1962, where he started Ed Nichols Construction.
For the next 30 years, Ed ran what was known as the best masonry company in western Colorado.
Many prominent locals got their start in the valley by working for Ed.
Among the many projects Nichols Construction completed were the Prince of Peace Church, the Stonebridge, Wildwood, Aspen Club, North of Nell, Ajax Mountain Building, Concept 600, the Wexner residence and every bank building in Aspen but one.
Ed was an excellent golfer and avid hunter who was a member of the Elks and Eagles clubs.
He often donated construction work to various local churches and charities.
If you needed help and Ed could help, he would, no questions asked. Retiring in 1992, Ed and Marion moved to Arizona, where they have many treasured friends.
He was the kindest and most loving of men, and will be missed by all.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 52 years; children Sandra Nichols of Parker, Edward A. (Debbie) Nichols Jr. of Littleton, Timothy J. (Deb) Nichols of Basalt; grandchildren Ean, Jessie and Shelby; and sister Bernie Michaletz of Shore View, Minn.
Ed was preceded in death by sisters Kathy and Mary, and brother Bill.
Ed will be cremated and returned to Aspen in the spring, where he will be buried in Red Butte Cemetery with a memorial service at the Elks Club, to be announced. Services were held at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Mesa, Ariz., on Dec. 12.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association or Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Mesa, Ariz.
Agnes Marie Chase

Agnes Marie Chase died Dec. 4, 2005, at Heritage Park Care Center.
She was 92 years old.
Agnes was born Feb. 13, 1913, to Anton and Josephine (Fabian) Snyder in Aspen. She was a lifetime resident of this area. She was married for 51 years to S. Burton Chase, whom she married in Glenwood Springs.
Agnes had several beauty salons and worked at others during her lifetime.
She was always helping others in their times of need.
She befriended many young valley residents she met while commuting to work on the RFTA ride.
She was a member of Eastern Star and the Rebekah Lodge at Carbondale.
Her family wishes to thank all who have expressed their wonderful wishes and memories regarding Agnes and Burton.
Agnes was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
She is survived by her sons, David Chase of Golden and Robert Chase of Elizabeth, two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She will be buried in Rosebud Cemetery. Farnum-Holt Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Michael J. Sekaros

Michael J. Sekaros, of Boulder, died of complications from multiple sclerosis on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2005. He was 55 years old.
The son of Sam G. Sekaros and Ingeborg B. Sekaros, he was born in Ann Arbor, Mich.
He lived in Aspen for 16 years and moved to Boulder in 1988.
A graduate of the University of Michigan with a degree in political science, Michael worked as chief broilerman at the Chart House in Aspen, and was a manager at the Smuggler Mobile Home Park.
He was also a member and served on the board of directors of the Aspen Chapel and taught Sunday school.
After moving to Boulder, he was an adviser to Thistle Community Housing and participated in various peaceful actions for people with disabilities.
Michael's vibrant spirit and ability to find peace and joy in things overlooked by most, was inspirational to all who knew him.
Michael embraced life to its fullest.
He was an adventurer: skiing Colorado's highest peaks, biking through Europe, advocating for people with disabilities, and for world peace and justice.
He enjoyed the outdoors, was an avid sports fan, appreciated many types of music and deeply valued visiting with family and friends.
Survivors include his sister, Pamela A. Sekaros of Boulder; his brother-in-law, William I. Hoxsie of Boulder; an aunt, Elisabeth J. Rees, of Ann Arbor; an aunt, Faye Sekaros of Ann Arbor; an uncle, Gairt H. Mauerhoff of Aspen; and many cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, mother and grandparents.
A memorial service will take place at noon Monday, Dec. 19, at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church, 3300 Table Mesa Drive in Boulder.
The Rev. Dr. Gregg R. Anderson of Aspen and the Rev. Thomas Holahan of Boulder will officiate.
A reception will follow in the church hall.
